Zopp - Dominion - epic prog rock, now with (some) vocals
ZOPP RETURNS! British progressive rock act, ZOPP, return with their sophomore album ‘DOMINION’, the follow up to their award-winning* self titled album, released in 2020. ‘Dominion’ showcases a clear progression in the sound of Zopp resulting in an epic 42 minute journey spanning avant-garde, jazz, ambient, folk, psychedelic rock and endless heaps of PROG. Ryan W Stevenson, the man behind Zopp (composer, mixer, producer, performer… heck, basically everything but the drums which have once again been masterfully performed by Leviathan’s Andrea Moneta) recorded the album at his home studio located in the suburbs of Nottingham, UK, over the past 3 years. To those who have been following Zopp from its inception, there’s one major difference you will notice this time round - there are vocals! Moving on from the instrumental Canterbury Scene infused neo-prog of the first album, Zopp now evolves into a form more reminiscent of Marillion or Yes and yet creates a new, unique and instantly identifiable sound that sets them apart from the rest of the progressive music scene. Purists, do not worry! Zopp’s fuzzed organ and technical playing style remains present, yet matured. ‘I think it’s more bombastic than the first album.’ States Ryan, ‘Writing a 14 minute progressive piece like ‘Toxicity’ where the song continuously flows was a challenge, but a successful experiment nevertheless. It’s important for me to throw all sorts of elements into the mix, from varied sources of music that are inspiring to me. I’ve really been into bands like King Gizzard and Tame Impala the last few years; not only their psychedelic sound, but also their DIY, independent approach to making music.’ Ryan W Stevenson: Hammond organ, mellotron, Hohner pianet, piano, electric pianos, acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, vocals, Korg ms20, synthesizers, percussion, flute, field recordings, sound design. Andrea Moneta: Drums and cymbals. Sally Minnear: Voice (1). Caroline Joy Clarke: Voice (1,2,7). Jørgen Munkeby (Shining NO): Tenor sax and flute (7). Mike Benson: Tenor sax (2). Rob Milne: Tenor sax and flute (7). Tomás Figueiredo: French horn (1). Joe Burns: Gong and additional cymbals (7). Cover art direction: Ryan W Stevenson. Cover art originally by Tom Adams

1 for the protagonist of Whiskey and Teeth and 6 for the protag of Studied and Praised.
Thank you for asking!
I love question #1, because I totally do this.
1) If you had to create a soundtrack for your story, what songs would you choose? Why?
For NAJ, I have a couple of songs for them. Mostly I think they are lost in a personal darkness and having a complicit relationship in their own downfall. Two I think work really well are Run with the Devil by Me and That Man (on a lighter note) and Coming Undone by Korn (on a darker note).
6) How do you feel the environment your character(s) grew up in shaped them as a human? How does the environment they’re in now shape them currently?
HRH is absolutely a product of their environment, to the point of complete undoing. They have really limited experience dealing with other people and emotional experiences. I get the sense outside of Renson, who is completely covered in public, they were largely raised by nanny droids and were taught only how to act "properly" and use people to their own ends. Renson and their rotating second guardsman are sort of the personal touch to their world, and why their relationship with them is so important.
By the events of Studied and Praised, we're seeing someone who has already had a plan for using the Grand Inquisitor, and has kind of set up a sort of idealized image of the man in their head to begin with. Then when they can't use him, they start to fall apart. When they have an emotional and physical reaction to meeting him, they really can't handle it. They know they aren't supposed to have these feelings and are scared to admit it, especially after the two most important people to them react so poorly to it. So instead of opening up, they just... allow themselves to become completely undone by it.
They're too proud to admit their faults or ask for help, even by people they trust.
Where I am right now with HRH post-S&P, I'm exploring two separate plot lines with them, and they are... trying to patch things over with Renson and Vanyiel, but the Grand Inquisitor and their personal motives are still a sticking point for them. They just are not emotionally developed enough to deal with having an /improper/ attachment. But they are trying to learn and understand. And they have a lot to learn very quickly.

Witnesses Take on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in Doomy New Single
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
I've long felt that heavy music needs to be treated more seriously than your average three-minute one-hit wonder. More and more I find myself using the term "composition" to describe the kind of music crossing my desk. Witnesses takes the craft of songwriting seriously as a medium of expression, and in so doing creates something of enduring interest.
Greg Schwan is the main driver behind the project, manning guitar, bass, keys, drum programming, hell even mixing and mastering the darn thing. A true auteur! In the song before us, he is joined by collaborating musicians Gabbi Coenen (vox) and Jørgen Munkeby (sax).
The three of them personify different characters in a kind of tone poem revolving around The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a painting by Edward Hull (which is, in turn, inspired by gothic storyteller Washington Irving). Here the fabled Headless Horseman (a Hessian soldier who lost his noggin during the Revolutionary War) terrorizes schoolmaster Ichabod Crane. Greg represents the archivist and historian of TarryTown, with Gabbi giving voice to The Hessian (aka Headless Horseman), while Jørgen takes on the role of a mourner.
"For the sound of 'The Curse of TarryTown, or The Hessian’s Diary'," Witnesses tells Doomed & Stoned, "I knew I wanted to continue stylistically in the vein of 'The Holy Water' EP. Coming off of the previous doom albums, it felt right to deepen the atmosphere, slow down further, and go in a moody direction with the vocals. Beyond that, the imagery and metaphor of Irving’s headless horseman has fascinated me since I was a kid. Mix all this together and you get the song!"
The singing is clean, melodic, and sanguine throughout. Even before downtuned guitars, bass, and drums enter the picture, the ambience of funeral doom is established quite effectively by the piano and acoustic strings. With the addition of the saxophone, we have another rare (but welcome) instance of doom-jazz, joining acts like Messa, Old Blood, and Mope. There's something at once mysterious and warm about the performances overall, and it makes me eager to hear even more.
The single is out Wednesday, December 1st (get it here). This is the Doomed & Stoned world premiere.
Give ear...
LISTEN: Witnesses - The Curse of TarryTown, or The Hessian's Diary
SOME BUZZ
New York City based Witnesses is preparing to unleash the enchanting heavy single "The Curse of Tarry Town or the Hessian's Diary". The new track follows the success of The Holy Water EP released earlier this year.
The cross-genre project of multi instrumentalist Greg Schwan began in 2015 designed to explore a multi-genre approach through a non-traditional band structure. Continuing to develop Witnesses' music, "The Curse of TarryTown" tells the story of Washington Irving’s headless horseman, but from the latter’s perspective.
Opening with entwining serene acoustic guitar and piano melodies, a dark undertone delicately emerges before venturing into heavy realms. Entrancing vocal deliveries from Gabbi Coenen enhance the immersive quality of this release and complement the stylistic transitions.
Tumblr media
The slower pace and elongated chords, inspired from a growing influence of doom metal, combine with the instrumental and vocal textures to produce an atmospheric sound. Playing further with genre expectations and instrumentation, Witnesses incorporate a bright saxophone lead that bridges across the light and heavy music.
Experience the enthralling delights of Witnesses through an unconventional twist on a dark tale. Taking an unusual approach through all aspects from the lyrical narrative through to the music itself, Witnesses opens the door to the obscure.
Greg comments "I wrote this song foremost to have fun with Washington Irving's Headless Horseman. I wanted to give the character a certain perspective on what's happening around him, while the music continues in the vein of The Holy Water EP."

Hailing from London, ON, Solarus, simply put, is a musical vision and ambition to bring musicians together through their shared love for music. They bring forth impressive female-fronted melodic power metal.
Traveling from Edmonton, AB, Tower Hill delivers premium old-school heavy metal inspired by bands like Running Wild, Riot, Judas Priest, early Blind Guardian, and Helloween. Forging the best of the late 80s and early 90s German, British, and US metal scenes into a new blend of shimmering steel, Tower Hill’s riff-driven, hook-laden traditional metal will have you banging your head and singing along.
Luminator is a fantasy power metal band from the Pacific Northwest (Tacoma, WA) and will be supporting their latest EP "On The Clouds".
From Calgary, AB, Heyoka's Mirror is a progressive rock/metal band with international roots that was brought to life in the summer of 2015 by founding members Andrew Balboa and Omar Sultan. Just like secrets, twisted alibis, for empty graves, Unlike manors, cut and burned, a thousand times Not like ours, coiled in coffins, weeping echoes, Weeping echoes Not by statues, golden monuments, war houses of worship Unlike manors, where the great white sails, torn to shreds, No! Not by promises, hungry shadows, in cold dark alleys, These rocky shores, are crafted, by the pulse of the sail, Ahh, by the pulse of the sail! And here I go on...
