For all my fellow name nerds out there, I am very pleased to present the third annual "Gloyd Roberson Memorial List of Actual Human Children Who Wrote Letters to Santa in 1920s/30s Oklahoma".
These names aren’t all necessarily “weirder than Gloyd” but fall into three rough categories which I’ve dubbed: “that’s got a nice ring to it”, “if I used this in a novel it would be considered too unrealistic” and “you’ve got 5 seconds to name a character that lives in 1920s Oklahoma, GO!”:

Chekov: Ahh, summers in the Caucasus or on the Black Sea Cooking decadent western marshmallows… Spock: Marshmallows? I am not familiar with them. Chekov: *explains* Spock: ......... It would seem they serve no useful dietary purpose. Chekov: No, sir. But… I wish we had some now. Then you'd understand. Spock: Perhaps, but I tend to doubt it. The attractive elements of many human preferences are not readily apparent to Vulcans.
(The Deep Domain by Howard Weinstein)
no offence to J. M. Dillard who novelized TFF, but Spock having this talk with Chekov before he died, and then misremembering "marshmallows" as "marshmelons" (which understandable because he lost his memory), but remembering that that was a thing humans seemed to do and like while camping and so acquiring them is chef's kiss.
Totally putting this into my headcanon folder of my brain :D
(this book was written before TVH)

Okay.
First thing first: I'm here because I want to put this tribute video in a full-length. Instagram can't do it. YouTube blocked my tribute video in 16 territories, and it resulted in being hidden (the video does not appear on my homepage).
Second: I'm not so new to Tumblr, I had two accounts long ago, but it wasn't really active. So, I'm willing to start a new here. Bear with me if I rarely post anything here.
Third: I made some tribute videos, and this is one of them. I love the movie, and when I was watching it, it was really emotional, but I couldn't even shed a tear (my heart shattered when I made this, anyway).
So, that's it. I hope you guys enjoy this video as much as I did when I made it.
Movie: Devotion (2022), dir. J. D. Dillard
Song: "Ocean & Engines" by NIKI
I do not make this to earn money, this is purely for entertainment and the way to fill up my time in-between what I do in daily life.
Cheers,
Denver

On mass culture eating itself, the current creative desert, etc. (part 1B)
A: [regarding Gibson] his near-future work is political and not particularly emotionally resonant. Can't really get into it. I also don't like Chloee Moretz - which had a lot to do with my reaction to that show K: Although those were direct remakes. Constellation is basically kind of stealing from a show called Infiniti, which was excellent (but not released in the US.) K: I don't really know who she is outside of that show. I just found the world-building a bit shallow. "Oh no, there's been a pandemic, a nuclear explosion, and kleptocrats run the world." Not very imaginative. A: I got to Ep. 8 of that French show you liked - with the monsters and vaguely Cowboy Bebop vibe K: Lastman? A: there's a surfeit of sci-fi out there. "The Kitchen" is barely worth the term sci-fi, but it's a recent British offering A: [Lastman?…] yeah K: Lastman is great. There is a Season 2 also btw. A: hmm mm I have to get through some other material first A: I'm working through For All Mankind right now so other stuff is in abeyance K: I've seen The Kitchen on I think Netflix or Amazon but haven't watched it yet. A: don't bother, unless you basically want current race politics pasted onto a future reality which is more or less an unimaginative resource crunched dystopia K: I liked For All Mankind A: so far it's been good - I'm waiting for it to spring forward in time to the near-present A: the forced Latina janitor's daughter is a math genius thing seemed a bit off. But that was the only thing. K: Sometimes it do be like that, though K: There's a character in the latest season I find annoying. But it's still good sci fi. K: Although I feel the initial conceit - that the Russians got to the moon first, and how that affected the space program - gets a bit diluted as the show progresses. A: yes I'll stick with it A: well, I like that it's seen as a stimulus and not the carrying theme. After all, that would be the reality too A: in this reality, Robert Kennedy wins the presidency, goes hard for the moonbase. They find water (which we still haven't located 100% in this reality) and go from there A: back to Neuromancer - this guy J D Dillard - his work so far doesn't tell me much and also doesn't inspire confidence he can handle this material K: Yeah I see he did the remake of "Utopia" which doesn't inspire confidence. K: Actually, like Neuromancer, it was extremely untimely. A: [Actually, like Neuromancer, it was extremely untimely. …] spectacularly, given it was in the midst of the pandemic. I did watch that season. Never watched the original British version K: I watched the original, season 1. It was good. I started the second season but didn't finish it. But the second season had a couple of Game of Thrones actors in their pre-Game of Thrones eras. K: Another very hard to find Blu Ray, the second season. Oddly, there is no UK version, despite it being a British show. The only country that produces it is Germany.

Psychology: how to spend your time?
“How we spend our time every day is how we live our life” Annie Dillard.
Time is money ! Everyone knows this sentence and it guides us every day. If we spend our time doing nothing then we get nothing! It's true, when you stay static and don't move (literally! You don't do anything all day) you don't risk moving a few bricks.
But, on the other hand, if you invest your time in a few activities, you end up making things happen. Indeed, if I tell myself that I am going to read a book a week, at the end of the year, I will have acquired a lot of knowledge. Same, if I put one euro aside each week then I end up saving a few thousand euros at the end of the year.
How to spend your time well then?
In my opinion, it is important to spend it productively. That's to say ? In my opinion, you have to learn!
Learn all you can! Read, read and read again!
Elon Musk, the boss of X and Tesla, said that you need everything you can. You need sufficient knowledge of many things. I advise reading what you can find on the brain, psychology, financial heritage but also theater and literature (you have to have culture!) It's obviously not a race. You have to remember what you read and assimilate it well. So, you have to read regularly.
For me, you have to spend your time doing things you love but also developing yourself. For this, it is important to have a diary. You have to fill it out so as not to waste your time here and there. When you fill your diary, you quickly realize that you don't want to waste your time on stupidities and trivialities. So, mark your calendar and don't waste any more time!

Devotion (2022, dir. J. D. Dillard) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Devotion is a war biopic that manages to stay mostly in line with the genre it's participating in, if only slightly elevated by its fantastic cast and their performances. The story of real life Korean War naval aviators Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, the film basically follows their entire relationship, and it is that relationship that carries the film. Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell turn in a couple of amazing performances and, even in moments that feel like they're causing the film to drag, they keep it from being a detriment because you're just enjoying watching two actors who have it on lock. There are a few dogfight scenes in the film, which are great, but they're really not the focus. Top Gun: Maverick already did that about as expertly as any movie could back in May. Devotion knows where its focus should be and sticks to it, which is mostly to its benefit.
Speaking of Top Gun: Maverick, I can't make it all the way through this review without pointing out the elephant in the room: yes, Powell (who plays Hudner in the film) is the same actor that played Hangman in Maverick. Yes, both films are about naval aviators. Yes, there is a scene where a plane goes down in the snow in both films. Yes, I made a ton of jokes about that prior to watching it (and it is pretty funny), but Devotion is not just a Top Gun: Maverick clone, and I genuinely don't think it's trying to capitalize on the similarities. It's a really good film with completely different motivations that really stands on its own two feet. That being said, it does feel very "classic." Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean it's a movie where the story plays out in a very unsurprising, flat way. The emotional scenes hit, the action scenes are entertaining, but the movie never really feels like it's trying to excel in any one particular area. It's an interesting story about a couple of great guys in a war that you don't see portrayed on screen a lot, and that's kind of all it needs to be.
Score: 8/10
Currently at the tail end of its theater run. It is available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K through Paramount Pictures.

Film after film: Sleight (dir. J. D. Dillard, 2016)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This smart, socially conscious, and entertaining merger of a hood movie and an indie sci-fi delivers a potent performance by Latimore, who's the best part of The Chi. He's a hustler, dealing drugs and performing magic tricks, the combination of which eventually, and in a sweeping swooshy way, carries him out of a shitty predicament. The ending, while satisfyingly hopeful, is marred by the last shot, playing a subpar charade with the audience.
