70 years ago today on Nov. 2, 1947, Howard Hughes performed his first and only fight of the Spruce Goose (also known as H-4 The Hercules). It was the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built.

From the July 13, 1953 feature: "A New Mayor...A New Councilwoman...And 400 New Angels Every Day." According to LIFE, Los Angeles experienced a huge increase in population during this time. "Since 1946 Los Angeles' increase in population approximates the total population of two Milwaukees." The now iconic photo above represents a single day's move into the Los Angeles suburb of Lakewood.
