#11: giving an almost imperceptible shake of their head
Pre-show - Sharon's parents sent Sharon and Jack to a secluded lakeside cabin to work out their issues. The decision Sharon makes in the end was probably not what they had in mind.

I'm With Her - Chapter 6
Sometimes, it's Brenda who does the saving. Start from the beginning on AO3
Chapter 6: White
Sharon stopped mid-sentence as something over Brenda’s shoulder caught her attention. Her face went white as a sheet and Brenda worried something might be really wrong… she had never seen Sharon look so unnerved, even a little bit helpless.
“Cap’n? You OK? Sharon?” she quietly asked the woman in front of her. The answer, however, came from behind her.
“Sharon! There you are! You’re a hard woman to track down!” a loud male voice boomed.
Sharon’s voice remained calm and controlled, her bright green eyes turning a steely grey as she replied tersely, “What are you doing here, Jack?” The color had returned to her cheeks, but Brenda could see her knuckles going white from how hard she clenched her fists.
The red-faced man — Jack, apparently — descended on Sharon, ignoring Brenda completely. She could smell the alcohol coming off of him in waves and she had to wonder who this man was that could so easily rattle her heroic Captain.
“I went to the condo, but you changed the locks on me again. Felt like a damned idiot standing in that hallway, banging on the door like that,” he slurred accusingly.
Sharon closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath to gather her strength before she looked him straight in the eye and replying under her breath, “I did not change the locks, Jack. You were probably just too drunk to work the key. Go find somewhere else to sleep it off. I don’t have time for this.”
To the untrained eye, she looked strong and in control, but Brenda had spent enough time studying Sharon’s face to see the flickers of doubt and shame (and could that be fear?) that she pushed down as quickly as they rose.
“Listen, you bitch -” Jack leaned in menacingly and Brenda decided she would not let him finish that sentence.
“‘Scuse me, sir, I don’t believe we’ve met,” she interrupted with her best southern belle routine. “I’m Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson and I do not take kindly to such language in my murder room, especially from those who have not been invited.”
Jack wobbled a little on his feet as he turned to take in the waif of a woman dressed in a floral sundress and slightly askew cardigan. He was a large man and she looked like he could knock her over with one finger, but even as drunk as he was he knew better than to tussle with a police chief.
“Jackson Raydor, Esquire,” he stated with a self-important smirk as he offered a hand to Brenda. From the twinkle in his eye, Brenda thought he could almost be charming if he weren’t so drunk.
“Oh, I see! You must be Captain Raydor’s husband?” Brenda said brightly but did not take his hand “I have heard… well, almost nothin’ about you! But it is just an honor to meet you, yes sir! Now, I am so sorry about this, but I do need just a few more minutes of your wife’s time — you understand, donch’a? So if you’ll just find somewhere else to wait for her, I would be ever so grateful.”
Keep reading on AO3

is it too late for the fic writer ask meme?
16 29 65 76 The Devil's Right There in the Details
❤️
It's never too late!
16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?
I want to say like, so many, but the answer is honestly none. Between my job and my publishing schedule and actually finishing my last fic which was really long and took over two years to write, my brain can be found currently dribbling out of my ears.
Sometimes I think about my favorite characters, think that I’d like to write something for Janeway/Paris, or and old timey Buffy fic, or I wonder what Sam and Jack are doing right now, but I really don’t have anything cookin’ at the moment.
29. What’s your revision or editing process like?
For fanfic, I read it one million times. I feel like when I was younger, I wrote a lot faster but now, I usually have to reread things a lot just to remember where I was, what has already happened, and to get back into the vibe of the story. And then when I think I’m done, sometimes I’ll read it out loud, because you can really catch things that way. I know the correct answer is probably to have it beta’ed but I’m at the point in my fic writing journey where I just don’t care that much and am fairly capable of doing what I want on my own to a level I’m comfortable with.
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
My next book will come out January 17th and I am excited to share more about that soon.
If I get in a fanfic mood again, I’d like to write something short and silly. (famous last words.)
76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of The Devil's Right There in the Details?
Because it followed the episodes so closely, (though it had started to veer off into its own territory quite a bit) I think I could have just kept going into season seven. I’m a little sad I didn’t get to the Christmas episode (“my captain raydor”), but it just didn’t work out that way. It would have been nice to revisit Charlie and Sharon’s kids, maybe Rusty could have shown up eventually but like, I wanted to stop before I was writing it just to write it, you know?

🛒 ✅ 😈 🎶
Thanks for asking! The rest of the emoji asks.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
✅ What’s something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don’t mean to?
I'm neither self-aware, observant, nor intentional enough to answer these particularly well, but in my SVU fic, I've really been harping on the idea of Olivia as Elliot's family. I'm so incredibly unsubtle about it that even I can't miss it.
😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?
Oh, yes! I introduced Jack Raydor into Dying in L.A. just for the sake of being mean -- I want him and Sharon to hook up on the way to Brenda/Sharon.
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
Not generally, no. My writing time is usually the five minutes between getting in bed and getting too tired to hold my phone up.

Rules of engagement the love affairs are over...
Wow nearly all of the season 2 love affairs are over...
Tumblr media
Julio finally loses it on Emma. She automatically thinks the case is about gangs. If that's one person who would know gangs its the guy who grew up in gang shoot outs and solved gang related crimes for 15 years.
Rusty does not want to have dinner with Chris' parents and is trying to feign being sick.
And then they're Sharon and Jack. Sharon makes the mistake of asking Jack for a favor. Which I'm sure for her has literally never worked out.
It's so weird seeing Andy and Jack be so buddy buddy in these episodes.
I love this wordless conversation that Andy and Provenza have at: Provenza to Julio: "And you knock it off you understand? Andy's like what's up with Julio, Provenza is like don't ask. Andy looks at Julio's as he walks it off. Then Andy gives Amy the loudest shrug face. 🤷🏽
The fact Jack is telling Sharon to keep it processional. Him of all people to Sharon Rulebook Raydor. I know this is just him trying to throw her off her game.
The look that Mike gives at that is sending me! 👀
Jack to Sharon: "And I told you when we were finishing breakfast. That I would get the relevant information. It's what I've done." For the record Andy has never used their relationship against her in a case.
That look on Emma's face! She completely believes they are sleeping together which is exactly what Jack wants her to think.
Emma: "Javier's attorney says that he was having breakfast with you this morning and to keep things professional. I hate to ask this but are you sleeping with this man?"
Sharon: "of course not. He's my husband." Has got to be one of the most hilarious conversations on the entirety of the show. Sharon gets so flustered here. It's great!
Also for the record when Deputy Chef Winnie Davis was gunning to get rid of major crimes and was reaming Sharon out about the teams tests. Andy pops into the murder room to tell Sharon that the interview is getting good. He very deliberately calls her Captain instead of Sharon. This is highlighted when Andy tells her Davis wants to speak to her only a few minutes before. He calls her Sharon instead of Captain. Why am I mentioning this? Because my boy Andy respects the fuck out of Sharon and would never use there relationship against her.
Emma: The defendant's lawyer is your husband. The material witness in another murder is your so called soon. Is the judge going be your brother? Look Emma is a bitch about it but Sharon does have a habit of making family members from cases/squad.
Provenza telling Rusty that it's not right to ghost Chris by comparing it to his mom abandoning him is... Not exactly the same thing but it does get him to think. He needs to stop being a wuss and actually tell Chris he doesn't like her like that.
This game of how stupid do you think I am is hilarious.
I love how Amy takes charge of this interrogation and is angry AF at this dude who probably killed his fiance.
Sharon also finally telling Jack off!
Sharon dumps Jack as an attorney the way he dumped all over their relationship by using it against her. She plays him at his own game.
I love Provenza! He's the only squad member that always saw right through Jack. I love how he calls Jack out. That he doesn't really care about his clients rights.
javiar: "I strangled her with the necklace she was wearing." That must have been some strong necklace! 👀
Taylor is such a press whore! That guy is literally on the phone with the press while they are arresting Ron.
Also let's point out that since Rusty gets a giant dose of reality when it comes to ghosting Chris. He is the bigger/better man than Jack. 25 years later and Jack is still ghosting his wife after one little fight.
Jack's words hold some serious weight: funny who we really are always shows up in the end.
Yes Jack that includes you. Your an asshole who never deserved your wife and kids. You just kept leaving them and only came back when you wanted something.
Unfortunately for Rusty he also takes Jack's advice and it fucks things up. If Jack really cared about Rusty he would tell him to just let Chris down gently. But then again this man is still married to a woman he hasn't lived with in 20 years so.
And this brings the Sharon/Jack relationship to a close and opens the door for Sharon/Andy. Jack has once again proven unreliable and leaves in the middle of the night like a ghost in a very similar way to the way he arrived. Completely unannounced.
I love how Sharon just shreds that letter from Jack. He has left her one too many times. This was Jack's last chance. I love that you can see she's clearly upset but doesn't shed any tears. I'm sure she's shed too many of them over the years. She doesn't care what he has to say. She's already heard it... What's the point? He's not going to change as much as she might want him to. She's been spinning her wheels over him for 20 years now. Since her kids were kids and the responsibility of being a parent was too much for Jack.
Anyway I love episodes with Jack. He's chaos in Sharon's worlds of order.

A little Christmas sappiness that hardly even mentions Christmas, but instead focuses on Shandy, and a little moment in time from Sharon’s past.

Major Crimes Review: 2x07 - Rules of Engagement
Tumblr media
What appears to be a gang-related shooting at a gas station brings Jack Raydor into the Murder Room not as a husband with boundary issues but as a court-appointed attorney for a witness with parole violation problems. It starts as a win-win situation for both Captain and Mr. Raydor, but turns into a confrontation soon after. Meanwhile, Rusty is trying to get out of dinner with Kris’ parents.
