The social media company formerly known as Twitter has been accused in a revised civil US lawsuit of helping Saudi Arabia commit grave human rights abuses against its users, including by disclosing confidential user data at the request of Saudi authorities at a much higher rate than it has for the US, UK or Canada.

The lawsuit was brought last May against X, as Twitter is now known, by Areej al-Sadhan, the sister of a Saudi aid worker who was forcibly disappeared and then later sentenced to 20 years in jail. It centers on the events surrounding the infiltration of the California company by three Saudi agents, two of whom were posing as Twitter employees in 2014 and 2015, which ultimately led to the arrest of al-Sadhan’s brother, Abdulrahman, and the exposure of the identity of thousands of anonymous Twitter users, some of whom were later reportedly detained and tortured as part of the government’s crackdown on dissent.

Lawyers for Al-Sadhan updated their claim last week to include new allegations about how Twitter, under the leadership of then chief executive Jack Dorsey, willfully ignored or had knowledge of the Saudi government’s campaign to ferret out critics but – because of financial considerations and efforts to keep close ties to the Saudi government, a top investor in the company – provided assistance to the kingdom.

Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, has announced a remarkable $66 million in bitcoin gross profit from Bitcoin sales through its Cash App in the last quarter of 2023. This reflects a substantial 90% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The company’s Q4 2023 earnings report, released on Thursday, triggered a surge in the stock price of NASDAQ: SQ, rising 12.35% in after-hours trading from $67.96 to $76.10.

Bitcoin Revenue and Bitcoin Gross Profit Surge

Block’s report detailed a total Bitcoin revenue of $2.52 billion, showing a significant 37% YoY increase. The surge in Bitcoin revenue and Bitcoin gross profit was attributed to the rise in the average market price of Bitcoin and gains from the price appreciation of Block’s Bitcoin inventory during the quarter. Block had previously invested $50 million and $170 million in Bitcoin in late 2020 and early 2021, respectively. By the end of 2023, the company held 8,038 Bitcoins, valued at around $340 million, which has since surpassed $400 million, resulting in a $207 million gain.

Mobile Cash App’s Impact

A considerable portion of Bitcoin sales occurred through smartphones, with the mobile Cash App generating $205 million in Bitcoin gross profit and $9.50 billion in Bitcoin revenue for 2023. This represents a 31% and 34% YoY increase, respectively. Financial Growth and Future Outlook

For the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023, Block’s revenues surged to $9,498,302, showcasing a robust 33.54% growth compared to the previous year’s $7,112,856. While 2022 saw a decline of 28.96% in revenues compared to 2021, the recent financial results indicate a positive trajectory for the company. According to 9TO5 Mac, Jack Dorsey left Twitter in May 2022 and has been working on Bluesky, a new decentralized social network. The app was officially made available in the iOS App Store, but it still requires an invitation (Join Waitlist) to use it.

Bluesky is based on the AT protocol, which is similar to ActivityPub, the decentralized protocol that powers Mastodon. It is unclear when it will be made available to everyone, but the release of its app on the App Store suggests that this may happen very soon.

Elon Musk u četvrtak navečer zaključio je svoju 44 milijarde dolara vrijednu akviziciju Twittera, a prvi potez mu je bio otpuštanje najvišeg vodstva te društvene mreže.     Kako Reuters doznaje od ljudi upoznatih sa situacijom, Musk je otpustio glavnog izvršnog direktora Twittera Paraga Agrawala, glavnog financijskog direktora Neda Segala te šefa za pravna pitanja i politike Vijaya Gaddea. Agrawal i Segal bili su u Twitterovom sjedištu u San Franciscu kada je dogovor sklopljen i ispraćeni su van, dodali su ti izvori. Twitter, Musk i otpušteni direktori nisu trenutno odgovorili na Reutersov upit za komentar. Musk je dosadašnje čelnike optužio da su njega i investitore doveli u zabludu oko broja lažnih računa na platformi, kao i da mu nisu pružili jasne argumente oko toga kako ostvariti visoke ambicije koje ima s tom utjecajnom društvenom platformom.
