Next on our travel down the Dionysos museum, we have an entire section dedicated to the Bacchanals in painting - with a few analysis here and there.

Titien's The Bacchanal of the Andrians

The Museum's website adds that this depicts the legend of how Dionysos gifted the inhabitants of the island of Andros with a river of wine. It was one of the numerous "miracles" attributed to the god by folk-belief when he became the god of the grapevine. Already in his "Bacchants" Euripides had told how, by touching a stone with his thyrsus he created a stream of fresh water, and where his narthex had touched the ground a stream of wine flowed ; and those that sought milk only had to scratch the ground near the god to see it flow, and from the god's thyrsus honey dropped...

In Ionia, on the island of Teos, a similar legend existed: it was said, by Diodor of Sicily and Pline the Elder, that at a fixed date in a calendar a stream of wine regularly flowed. At Elis, on the eve of the god's feast-day, empty jars and jugs were sealed and left alone in Dionysos' temple: by the morning, when they were opened, they were filled to the brim with wine.

The museum adds this mention: the painting is a depiction of the legend of Lotis collected by Ovid. One night, as the gods had a feast, the nymph Lotis fell asleep. Priapus got close to her, and with his famous ithyphallic nature, he decided to rape her. But as he was about to touch her body, the donkey of Silenus started making loud noises - waking up everybody, including Lotis. Lotis fled from Priapus' embrace, and all the gods laughed and mocked the god.

This painting was most notably the favorite painting of Fernand Botero.

Day 30.

This was my Disaster Girl photo.

Long story short: I heard they were filming there in May and gave them a couple of days to *not* be filming. Drove over on Sunday afternoon thinking they must be done. They weren’t.

Most people didn’t give me a second look. I wasn’t the only looky loo. I met a dude who was getting gas at the BP and freaked out when I told him what this was. I met a woman protesting something or another who was really upset that the trucks were blocking the whole parking lot. I wish I knew what she was there for but she was already so pissed that I figured it was best not to ask. And I met an incredibly nice security guy (off duty cop) who was asked by a couple of people in the crew who really, really, really didn’t want me there to tell me to leave. He declined. Because I wasn’t doing anything wrong, wasn’t interfering and the strip mall was open for business. Given how many others were standing around at various points (I probably hung around for about an hour, mostly trying to wait them out to get good pics of the signage) I’m not sure why they set their sights on me but at one point they all turned their phones toward me like they were filming. I don’t know, y’all. I mean, I guess they don’t realize that I’m stubborn as fuck and definitely wasn’t leaving after that. No one else gave me or anyone else standing around a second look because they were doing their jobs.

The security guy and I had a fun conversation where he told me that someone had posted the location on Facebook and I confirmed that, yes, there’s an Atlanta filming group that people post this shit in. But that that’s not how I knew they were there. I knew because actual crew members had posted pics of base camp on insta and it was super obvious where it was. 🤷‍♀️

No idea for sure what they were filming that day. I saw Billy once, wearing the sweatpants. Didn’t see Ralph. I also heard shouting while they were inside that I’m gonna say, based on the random kids loading in and out of vans, was maybe the final scene there. Saw Tanner, Jacob and Griffin around. Could’ve been literally anything, including scenes that didn’t make the cut.
