Dear Tumblr Staff, @staff  @support

With your new update coming December 17th, many of us as consumers have been concerned. Your update is made to eliminate most content that is "NSFW" and you have made a bot to flag posts that may or may not contain such things. Although your reasoning is clear, we do not believe that eliminating all "Not-Safe-For-Work" content is the correct plan of action.

Many of your site's users make their own income from NSFW content, for example sex workers, artists and voice actors who pay their rent using commissions. Tumblr is full of many people who produce and consume such content. The update would be considered discrimination against content creators and sex workers. With this new update, they may not be able to receive enough pay for a living and will eventually have to move on to a different site. Additionally, your new "bot" has been having many issues as it is flagging posts that are not NSFW at all. It's been getting a little out of hand.

We understand your issue with not wanting minors seeing the content. A simple solution is to immediately blacklist any content, tagged to be "NSFW" by the creator, from anyone under 18.

We also understand that you want to make your site a safe space for people to express themselves comfortably. A better way is to make sure that people that are harmful are eliminated from the community. To do so you can blacklist an IP address or email address to make sure that said people don't try to ban evade.

With the new update on Tumblr, we believe that it will do more harm than good to such an amazing site. It'll prevent many of your users from posting content to earn their income, it's discrimination, it prevents creative freedom and expression. Although we understand that you are trying to make the site safe, we do not believe that this is the right way to do so.
