We start the first of a two-part series examining the musical Camelot, the Broadway hit based on T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, which I recently re-read in preparation. For part one, we look at both the original cast recording from 1960, as well as two clips from the Ed Sullivan show, featuring Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as Guenevere. Unfortunately, this is all we could find of that particular version of the show. We were, however, able to find a 1981 stage revival starring Richard Harris and Meg Bussart and filmed for HBO.

The 1981 production differs from the original production, streamlining some elements, cutting some characters, but largely is the same show. In both cases, the effort to condense a 700-page novel into a two and a half hour musical greatly simplifies some of the driving philosophy of the book—as much a meditation on politics and the rise of fascism as it is a consciously-anachronistic fantasy and elegy for a dying world (very much reading like Lord of the Rings meets A Connecticut Yankee). However, focusing on the love triangle and Arthur’s conundrum of balancing justice and mercy, might and right, makes for an effective musical, one which even influenced the popular culture conception of the then-current Kennedy administration.

Funny Lady (1975). Story of singer Fanny Brice's stormy relationship with showman Billy Rose.

This movie really gets by on Barbara Streisand’s charisma as a performer, which is sort of disappointing given it’s a sequel to a movie that celebrated her charisma by - - y’know - - also being good. Still, it’s fine, I guess. There are some fun set pieces overall and Streisand really is pretty incredible in the role of Fanny Brice. It’s just a shame she wasn’t given better material this time around. 5/10.

Jose Menendez, was shot to death by his own two sons, Lyle and Erik Menendez, in August of 1989.

Erik and Lyle claimed they acted out of fear, and that their father was a sadistic pedophile and rapist who had abused them their entire lives. 

The media mocked the brothers’ allegations, dubbing it “the abuse excuse”. But Lyle and Erik weren’t the only ones with dirt on their father.

Lyle and Erik’s cousins, Diane Vandermolen, Andy Cano, Kathy Simonton, Alan Anderson and Marianne Cano all testified they had witnessed Jose abusing the boys physically, and had themselves been abused by Jose and his wife while staying with the family.

Cheri Woods, a Hollywood madam told the New York Post that Jose Menendez frequently abused the call girls he ordered, and had a preference for teenagers.

“He insisted that the girls be no more than 13 years old and petite,” Woods remembered. “But I never employed minors, so I sent my youngest looking girls.”

Woods said the girls would come back terrified and covered in bruises and scratches. He wanted to act out violent rape fantasies and inflict pain on them. Woods said she stopped accepting his calls.

This is consistent with Erik and Lyle’s stories. Especially in regard to the violence. I won’t repeat the details of what his younger son Erik alleges he did to him from the ages of 6-18, because it is highly disturbing, but it lines up with the details given by Woods in that article.

Jose worked for RCA records, and was responsible for bringing the boy-band Menudo to America.

Menudo was often described as “creepy”, because the boys were very young (12-14), and would be replaced when they got too old.

Recently, numerous former members have come out and said they had been sexually abused during their time in the group. Jose has not so far been named specifically, but it’s important to keep in mind these were the people he chose to surround himself with.

Actor Roddy McDowall, who worked with Menendez on the film Fright Night 3, described him as “the worst human being he [had] ever met”, “A terrible man” and that he carried “an aura of evil” around him.

Lyle and Erik both testified that their father would often describe graphic ways in which he would kill the two boys if they disobeyed him. He would also strangle them, and once held a knife to Erik’s throat.

The boys’ tennis coach Charles Wadlington described Jose as “the worst parent [he] had ever met”, and cried on the witness stand as he described what he’d seen. He also expressed he wished he could have saved Lyle and Erik.

After Jose’s death, naked photographs of his sons were discovered in the house. 

Lyle Menendez testified that Jose would force him and his brother to watch pornography with him. He described the films as violent, depicting assault and sometimes murder, with both male and female victims. 

Neighbour Alicia Hercz testified she attended a dinner at the Menendez home where Jose screened the film Pixote, in front of her and his sons. It is a violent and graphic movie about a teenage boy and a trans girl who are sex trafficked and abused.

Lyle and Erik Menendez were not believed, and their abuse was mocked in the media. For example, Saturday Night Live made fun of Lyle’s tearful testimony and Jay Leno frequently made fun of the allegations. To this day, people buy into “the abuse excuse” narrative and many TV shows and podcasts that cover the case don’t even mention the abuse.

Today, Lyle and Erik rot away in prison for defending themselves against this sick man and his equally horrific wife.
