Who wants a peek at my angsty little star-crossed lovers fic A Million Little Heartaches (non-EP) this weekend?? 💔💫❤️‍🔥
A Million Little Heartaches- Ever-practical Lily is excited to see her old high school friends at their reunion, but she doesn't bargain for the way old wounds are ripped open when she sees Jake, the boy who broke her heart time and again, and Liam, the boy who healed her and who's heart she broke in return. For better or worse, they shaped how she loved and wanted to be loved, setting her life off on a particular path. Things come to light that make her question everything she knows about the past, and plagued by 'what if's', she could throw her carefully cultivated future into chaos if she digs any deeper into the dangerous feelings that arise.

• It was all Boyle's fault. If it wasn't for him, everything would had happen way faster. When you and Peralta meet for the first time, you already working as detective and Jake being a rookie to 99th precint, Boyle shouted something about marriage. It took you years to forget that.
• Jake was a detective with great instincts, it would have been so easy to work with him. Or it would be, if he didn't act like a child. Always bragging, teasing everyone around him, joking about anything that moves. Jake was fun, but was also damn annoying.
• But with time you realized he was more than that. Jake was competent. And never left nobody behind. You could count on him. Not only when you're dealing with dangerous things, but when you need someone to make you laugh on a hard day. Jake will be there, as annoying as he can be, trying his best.
• Falling in love with Jake was unheeded. So slow you didn't even notice. It start with simple things. It started with the way he makes you laugh.
• Jake can make you laugh until you're affraid to piss on your clothes. You being so loud that make other people laugh because of your reaction. But he can also make you chuckle. On these days you're mad at him, or you're in an important meeting, or it is such a bad joke that's embarrasing that you find it funny. And Jake is the best at making you giggle. When you're sad, going through a hard time, and felt like the way of the world is on your shoulders.
• You didn't noticed that you were falling in love, but Jake wasn't so oblivious. He didn't fall in love with you. He walked in love with you. He chose to love you. Jake is immature, and annoying, and childsh and dumb... but he knew what that feeling burning his chest was. Jake just never imagined you could feel the same.
• So time did what it always did: it passes.
• Everything changed when they found out that you were invited to join the Vulture team and didn't know what to do. At first the squad felt betrayed, but then the fear of losing someone important to the team became the most important feeling. Nobody wanted to lose you. Not even Gina.
• For a week, everyone went out of their way to spoil you. You'd fight with them and say it was an important choice and that treats wouldn't help you choose, but that didn't stop them. Boyle cooked your favorite dishes, Terry praised and listened to you, Holt even smiled at you. And Jake, well, Jake became the most competitive person in the world. He was trying to make you realize that no other place would make you as happy as 99th.
• Rosa took you to Shaw's Bar thinking a heart to heart conversation would help, but Jake had other plans. He knew that bar held fond memories, and a little drink would make the nostalgia take root in your heart. He just didn't expect the two of you to end up drunk talking about everything you lived together.
• If without booze you were already competitive, imagine totally drunk. You walked around New York, as loud as possible, betting on everything. About who opened the door first, about what each person on the street would do next, about the result of the football game going on at the time, about which Taylor Swift album would be re-recorded first. And at some point, they decided to see who went the longest without blinking. Jake would blow in your face whenever his eyes stung, but you forced him to keep going until there was a fair winner.
• The drunkness had already destroyed any sense of self-preservation in Jake. All he saw was your constant smile, your cheeks burning, your eyes sparkling. Jake just saw you, without even listening to his conscience. He wasn't afraid, didn't thought he wasn't enough, that you may already had someone else on your heart. Jake didn't think, he just acted. Jake kissed you.
• And you kissed him back.

Sneak peaks!
Lovely readers, supporters, and friends, as you know, summer is fast approaching. And you know what that means?
More time for writing!
So, I wanted you to give you guys some sneak peaks at some projects I have planned for this coming up summer!
1. Sagitta 🏹🪶🌌🌳 (title may change later)
I am so incredibly excited to announce that I have planned a Jake Sully x Reader. Sagitta is going to be a retelling of Avatar, in which a y/n insert takes the place of Neytiri. Written mostly from the perspective of Jake Sully, and getting to see Pandora through his eyes.
I’m very excited for this one because it’s almost impossible to find a Jake sully x reader fic that isn’t smut, much less a story with multiple chapters and an actual plot. So I’ve taken it upon myself to write one.
2. pareidolia 🌄🪸🌺
Lo’ak Sully is an irreligious person. An agnostic when it comes to the worship of the great mother eywa. How can he? What has Eywa ever done for him? Lo’ak was never really one to believe in forces beyond explanation. Omens, angels, powers beyond his reach. And yet, his mind always wondered off the ground.
When Lo’ak and his family are forced away from the only home they’ve ever known, he meets Y/n. A woman whom held the position of right hand to the Tsahik of the Metkayina. A warrior, healer, a prodigy.
How could the stars not align for him when this embodiment of the sun and all its glory stood before him? The sun. The greatest star his universe had ever known.
3. ostranenie🪻🌑💫🌱
Kiri swears your life mission is to do 2 things.
1. Make terrible attempts at flattery.
2. Make her secretly enjoy it.
You’re a scientist and whose parents died fighting with Jake. You went through the transfer of consciousness at 13, a process that nearly killed you, but as persistent as you were, you always found a way back. You’ve grown up with Kiri, and with the both of you now facing the age of 19, unknown feelings find themself embedded within her. You’ve always flirted with her in a playful manner. You and your stupid, stupid smile and beautiful eyes..But what happens when she starts to wish for it to be genuine?
Or is it already real?…
3. Pavonine 🦚🪘🪬
Ao’nung. The prissy, mermaid bitch boy who enjoyed making your life miserable. Born to the Tayrangi clan, your parents died in the first war. Jake and Neytiri have raised you as their own from a young age. But what happens when your home is threatened? The return of Quaritch and his January 6th squad has turned your life inside out, upside down; and fucked it in the ass.
Great. just great.
Arriving at the metkayina islands was a breath of fresh air. You felt at home again. You always felt a bit misplaced in the forest, and you missed your seaside life with the Tayrangi.
What happens when a certain prince of the sea finds himself attracted to the woman who he’s 98% positive would murder him if she had the chance??

💫 Astronomy~ Neteyam Sully x fem!human! reader Chap. 4 💫
Tumblr media
masterlist~
prev. chap.~
warnings~ language, death is mentioned, please lmk if i missed any!
first, this is chapter 4! i accidentally posted the wrong chapter earlier so this is the right one! sorry again, when i write i make a separate google doc for each chapter so i don't get them mixed up when posting them here, but i admit i was very sleep deprived when i posted the last version of this so it got mixed up.
i promise this won't happen again! sorry!
wordcount~ 2.6k+
We've traveled the seas, we've ridden the stars...
Your fingers fidgeted with the small hairclip in your hand, its orange and yellow feathers serving as a temporary distraction to the argument occurring before you.
"She needs to be sent back!" Jake had argued to Norm as Max interjected his arms flailing as he gestured to the three monitors displaying different charts and results.
Norm sighed, "Look, even if I wanted to send her back, we can't! There's no telling what would happen if we do. Most likely she would be subject to cruel and inhumane experiments, and that's if the RDA doesn't get their hands on her first. If they did," he paused glancing over at you warily before continuing, "they could most definitely use her against us," he finished his hands shaking by his side.
Jake was conflicted; on the one hand, you could be innocent, and truly have no idea what was going on or have any attention of harming his family or the Omatikaya Clan, but on the other hand, you could already be a spy, like he had been at one point for the RDA. He groaned in frustration, and then it hit him.
You glanced over at the men when Jake cleared his throat, "She can stay," Norm sighed in relief but it was cut short as Jake continued, "She can stay, and she will learn the way of the Omatikaya Clan. However there are some ground rules," he listed them off but his voice was so faint you could barely hear.
Norm nodded, "Alright, that sounds fair, I'll let her know."
You flinched as Jake walked past you and Norm stopped in front of you, "So, you can stay!" he said his voice full of mock enthusiasm.
"And? What 'rules' do I need to follow?" you asked fixing the clip into your hair a small smile on your lips.
"Well, you won't be able to come back here for a while, of course. And of course, you'll be staying in the mountains with Jake," you barely listened overcome with excitement.
Finally, you'd be able to leave the lab. It had been almost six months since you'd been locked away. Although that hadn't stopped you from sneaking out every now and then to see the others when Norm and Max's noses were buried in research papers and the like. You just hadn't been able to go out during the day.
"Are you even listening?" Norm asks, breaking you out of your thoughts and you frown dramatically, "Of course I am! I heard all about how I'm going to the mountains and I can't come back. I'm just excited I finally get to see everyone again!"
"So you weren't listening, were you?" he asks.
"Um, okay. Maybe I zoned out just a little bit okay! But I heard all the important stuff!" you argued back crossing your arms in annoyance.
He sighs frustrated, "So you heard all about how you won't be staying anywhere near Jake's family right? You're forbidden from interacting with them at all," he said his voice serious as he crosses his arms.
"What? Why?" you ask sullenly your brows twisting in confusion.
"Because Jake doesn't trust you and neither does Neytiri. Think of it this way, you could be a potential threat, not that I'm saying you are one!" he says when feels your glare.
"Just, bear with it for now, okay?"
You murmur out a "Fine," but pause licking your lips, a question about your mother on the tip of your tongue, but you bite it back making your way back to your room as Norm calls out, "And remember, you leave in two weeks!"
You shut the door tightly and pull your communicator out of your pocket, and hear General Ardmore's calm and crisp voice, "Miss Augustine, how've you been? Your last report is overdue by three months, remember your contract?" she says smiling coldly, her voice frigid as she finishes speaking.
You clear your throat when she feigns a gasp, "Miss Augustine, have you noticed your eyes," her eyes scan you up and down, and you can see her hide a smirk.
Your eyebrow twitches, "There have been some, changes, General," you pause as she flips through a stack of papers.
She couldn't... know anything? Could she?
Your thoughts are interrupted as she speaks, " I bet you're wondering why I'm not surprised."
She fixes her hair before continuing, "I can't exactly tell you everything now, but I'll let you know this, the changes were intentional. And I expect your next report to be on time. Any questions?"
Yeah a lot actually, you think as you clear your throat, "Actually, for the next year, I'll be staying in the Halleluiah Mountains, with Jake Sully. So my report won't exactly be timely."
The icy smile returns to her lips, "Is that so? Well, I'll be waiting when you return, and remember," she says in a singsongy voice, "your contract."
And then the screen goes black, ending the call.
You took a deep breath as you peeked around the corner, Norm was busy typing up an email to some colleague back on Earth and Max was drawing a diagram from a chart his hands raking through his hair as he held his chin in thought.
This should be easy, you thought as you slowly crept to the door, your hand slowly opening it and shutting it behind you, the treeline greeting you. You quickly walked into the forest the bioluminescent plants mesmerizing you as you quickly reached your meeting point. You sat down on a log and listened to the noise of the plants and creatures surrounding you.
It had been six months since you first landed on Pandora, and not a moment went by when you didn't think of home, of the tall green trees and warm sun, or at least what was left of them, that greeted you every day and night. But the most recent thing on your mind was snow. Most of your fondest memories involved the snow, the cold flakes sticking in your hair, reaching out to catch one on your tongue, and you realized you would probably never see it again.
A twig snaps and you turn to see Neteyam standing in front of you a smile on his face as he sits down next to you, "What are you thinking about Sky girl?" he says his voice playful as he pulls you up to stand.
His hand lingers on yours before he pulls something out from behind him, another hairpiece. This one however is in the shape of a comb and has clear beads dangling down it, with a single blue feather attached. He gently fixes it in your hair and smiles, his hands lingering on your hair before he takes a step back, "So, I heard you're joining us in the mountains," he says his hand grasping yours.
You nod as he leads you down a path, your grip on his hand tightening as you hear another branch snap.
"I'm leaving in two weeks, I guess," you pause cleaning your throat before you add, "and your father has decided I can't step a foot near you, or Kiri, Tuk, and Lo'ak," you add quickly a blush creeping up your cheeks when you come to a stop nearly running into Neteyam's back.
He opens his mouth to speak, but a familiar cry interrupts him. You look up to see an Ikran standing before you, you stare at its green mottled skin as Neteyam reaches his hand out to you, you grab it and he gently helps you up, sitting behind you he makes Tsaheylu with his Ikran. You gasp as the flapping of wings greets your ears, and his grip on your waist tightens as the Ikran takes off.
You can feel your heart in your throat as you fly around and out of the trees and reach the sky, the stars twinkling down at you, and you feel tears brimming in your eyes.
Neteyam notices the shift in your mood as you attempt to discreetly wipe away the tears falling down your face and points up to the sky, "Are you thinking of home again? Do you think you could point it out from here?"
You frown, "No, I'm just, happy," you reply as you smile, "and besides I'd need a telescope for that, and even then, it'd probably still be too far away," you said as you pushed your hair out of your face.
He smiled down at you and tightened his grip on your waist as his Ikran dove down and then back up again, drawing laughter from you.
He wished the night would never end as he gazed down at you.
You feel dizzy when you land, and after what feels like hours of flying, you nearly fall on your face but Neteyam quickly catches you and helps you regain your balance.
Once you reached the lab you could feel your face warming with blush as Neteyam reluctantly let go of your hand. You froze for a second, debating on whether or not to move forward, but planted your lips on his cheek as he said goodnight, "Goodnight!" you shouted before rushing inside not giving him a chance to respond before you ran back to your room and collapsed against the door. And you could swear your heart was going to explode as you held your face in your hands.
Neteyam stood in front of the lab shocked as his hand touched his face where your lips had once been, a blush heating up his face as he turned and ran back to his Ikran. His heart beating so hard he thought it might beat out of his chest.
He couldn't stop smiling even into the next morning, and as he finished sharpening an arrow Lo'ak couldn't help but ask what had him in such a good mood, "What's got you in such a good mood bro?" he asked as he set down his knife.
Neteyam turned to him his face still red, "I-I umm, nothing," he stuttered out before he caught the look Lo'ak was giving him, he shook his head and went back to sharpening an arrow.
"Hey, you know I'm not that stupid, right? So," Lo'ak's brow furrowed as he asked, "do you like Sky girl?"
Neteyam laughed, "What? No," he said as he shook his head, "I don't like her like that, I can't!" he exclaimed as he threw the arrow across the floor and slumped back down on the log.
Lo'ak moved closer to him, "Why not?" he asked as he turned to him, his eyes looking him over before returning his gaze.
Neteyam stood up and grabbed his arrows, "Because she's from Earth, and she's," he mumbled trailing off.
"So?"
He frowned, "If you like her you should tell her," he paused to pick up his knife looking it over, "and it's pretty obvious, what with you sneaking out after eclipse all the time."
"What? I would never-"
Lo'ak laughed as he sharpened his knife, "I told you, way too obvious."
Neteyam looked up at him "What if she doesn't feel the same?"
Lo'ak opened his mouth to say something, but paused and looked into the trees, "I don't know, that's up to you to find out," he said turning to leave.
Neteyam sighed and shook his head, "I don't need to tell her, I'm pretty sure she already knows how I feel," he mumbled under his breath.
Your head throbbed as your pen tapped the paper, blue ink smudging on the white canvas. You twirled the pen in your hand, wondering how to start, maybe with, "Hey mom, how've things been back home? Is it getting any better?" but quickly scratched that when the images of Earth came flooding back. It was nothing like Pandora, the trees were thinking away, the sky was seemingly always a dull grey no matter where you went, and the sun was always a bleak and cold yellow that almost never made an appearance.
It was strange, when you first came here seven months ago, you were homesick for the dying planet, you even missed the noises of cars in the city at night. But what was killing you to know, was if the treatment had gone according to plan and if it hadn't yet if it ever would. You didn't like to think about it, but your mother had been on death's door when you'd left. The doctors had given her months to live, and yet the General assured you she would be fine, as long as you held up your end of the deal. Your 'contract', which was constantly held over your head, forced you to spy on your newfound friends.
You turned on your side as you glanced out the window, waiting for the sun to set.
You smiled as you entered the forest, you'd written so much you'd gotten sick of it and spent the rest of the day trying to convince Norm to let you go outside, but he wouldn’t relent.
“You leave in two weeks, and then you’ll have plenty of fresh air,” he’d said, staring into a microscope.
Your lips curled into a small smile as you saw Neteyam walking towards you and remembered the kiss, and how you'd left before he could say anything. You were still nervous that it would affect your friendship.
"Hey, is something wrong Sky girl?" he asks as he walks up to you, his eyes scanning your face as his eyebrows furrowed.
You stare up at him, "Uh, nothing," you mutter trying to think of something to say.
"You sure?" he asks as he moves closer, "your eyes are red, were you crying?"
You shake your head, "No, I just had a bad dream this morning, that's all," you say turning away from him.
He looks at you for a moment before he moves closer, "Were you thinking of Earth again?" he asks as he places his hand on your shoulder, his voice soft as you feel tears prick at your eyes.
You clear your throat and look up at him, the General’s words echoing through your ears, “Remember, your contract, collect as much info on Jake Sully and his family before we send in the recombinant soldiers, or the deal’s off.”
You choke back a sob and Neteyam pulls you into his chest. You wished you could tell him. How you were so desperate that you turned to the RDA, even though you knew how awful you were. But what choice did you have? Grace was dead, you didn’t even know your Father’s name, let alone if he was alive or not, and your mother was the only family you had left. And if she was gone, what would become of you?
You sobbed into Neteyam’s chest as he rubbed circles in your back.
“I’m sorry, for crying,” you said through the tears.
"It's okay," he reassured you as he wiped away your tears.
"I-" you paused, the words caught in your throat. You wanted to tell him everything, but when your eyes met you realized you couldn't. At least not yet.
Neteyam licked his lips when he realized how close you were, your noses almost touched, and your lips were a hair's breadth away.
He watched as your eyes fluttered closed, and you leaned in. He closed his eyes and tightened his grip on your waist as your lips met.
You shut your eyes, and wrapped your arms around his neck as you listened to his breaths, his heartbeats. You opened your eyes, and you could see his open too. He leaned in, gently grabbed your face, and pulled you into a deeper kiss.
When you pulled away, you stared into his eyes again. His hand cupped your cheek as he stared at you.
"I like you, Sky girl," he said resting his forehead against yours.
You smiled, "I like you too."
"I know you do," Neteyam said teasing you.
You sighed and playfully hit him on the arm, making him flinch as he leaned in once more.

It wasn’t fair that you were here without her. If you listened close enough, you could still hear her laughter bouncing off the walls. You could smell the snickerdoodle cookies she always baked when you came to visit. You could feel the warmth of her rib crushing hugs wrapped around you. Opening your eyes, you are met with a dark and empty house. You have spent more time here than in your own home, but now it was unrecognizable. This house and the box that sat in the attic was the only tangible thing you had left of her. Your chest aches as you’re pierced through the heart at the realization that you were never going to see her again.
You were here and she was not. There was nothing you could say or do that will change that.
_____________________________________
“So. You think you’re ready to man this side of the bar on your own?” Penny Benjamin stands in front of you with her hands on her hips, dish rag slung over her shoulder.
It has been a week since you moved from Colorado to San Diego, California, and things were surprisingly starting to fall into place. On your first night there, you ran into an old childhood friend of yours, Natasha Trace. Her family owned the beach house a little ways away from your grandmother’s. The two of you met on the beach when you were kids and she became your summer best friend whenever you came to visit. As time came and went, the two of you continued to grow, drifting farther and farther apart. It was a miracle that she was right where you last saw her on that very same beach, taking a late night walk at the same time you were.
The two of you fell into place like pieces of a puzzle, catching up and getting along like no time had passed at all. When she brought up your grandmother, you disregarded her with a shake of your head. You deflected with complaining about your recent unemployment and how desperately you were looking for a job.
Natasha lit up, immediately knowing the perfect place for you to go. You spent one week under Penny Benjamin’s wing, learning how to be the perfect bartender for her establishment.
With a sigh, you rest your forearms on the tabletop across from her. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” While most nights, you sat back and watched as she manned the bar alone, this would be your first time helping her out with the rush. Your palms were starting to sweat, leaving an outline of your hands on the table. The nerves were finally getting to you and it didn’t help that tonight was the night that Natasha’s friends and colleagues were coming back to North Island. The Hard Deck was the best Navy bar in town and Natasha assured you that everyone in a uniform would be flocking there.
Barely your first hour into your shift, you realized that Nat wasn’t over exaggerating at all. The place was filled to the brim with people. A sea of khaki and navy blues were all pressed shoulder to shoulder in that bar. You were surprised that anyone even had room to drink, let alone breathe, with how congested the place was.
The bar was warm and the air was buzzing with excitement from the aviators and other patrons. Being the first new face to grace the bar in a while, you immediately drew attention to yourself. You liked to think you were doing a good job so far, considering no one had complained about their drinks. That or they were too nice to complain. It wasn’t until a mustached aviator approached your side of the bar with a stoic look on his face that you were afraid you messed something up horribly.
You gulp, wiping your palms on the front of your apron, hoping that it wasn’t obvious that you were a nervous wreck. “What can I get for you, sailor?” You disguise your discomfort behind a snarky remark.
He arches a brow, leaning against the bartop with one arm and tilting his sunglasses down the perch of his nose. The man gives you a once over, his eyes darting up and down your figure.
Your cheeks burn at the action.
“Aviator,” he states, matter of factly.
“Excuse me?”
“You called me sailor. I’m an aviator. Naval aviator, to be exact. And you are?” The way he leans in ever so slightly clues you in on what he wants.
With a scoff, you slap your rag onto the table. “Not interested, flyboy.” You roll your eyes and cross your arms over your chest. “Now, did you actually want anything or did you just come here to flirt?” Your eyes flit to the bell above your head, just in case the words that flew from the man’s mouth were unwanted.
He opens his mouth to respond before his head falls slightly forward, his sunglasses toppling onto the counter. An embarrassingly girlish squeak leaves his lips as Natasha steps up beside him.
“Leave my friend alone, Bradshaw.” Nat asks you for a glass of water that you hastily prepare.
With your back turned to the duo, you listen intently to their conversation.
“This is her? Well, shit, Nat if I had known I wouldn’t have been such a–”
“Douche?” She finishes for him with a snort.
You turn with an uneasy smile on your lips, placing the water in front of Natasha.
“Bradley, this is Star,” she gestures to you with a smile.
His mustache twitches as his lips pull up slightly at the corners. “Star, huh?”
You huff, crossing your arms across your chest. “Yeah, it’s just a nickname I’ve had since I was a kid.”
“Well, Star,” he grins. “Welcome to FighterTown, USA. You’re gonna love it here, I’m sure.”
You return his greeting with a small nod before busying yourself with the other patrons.
Nat eyes you warily as you make your way around the bar. It doesn’t go unnoticed by her that you purposely don’t tell Bradley about your complicated history with the small town.
As the night went on, you saw more and more of Natasha’s crew. They were an interesting group, one you wouldn’t think to be compatible with one another had you have met them individually. Seeing them altogether, however, helped you understand why their last mission went so successfully. Despite them being unable to share all the details, they were more than happy to vaguely reenact the events of the mission just enough for you to understand.
The “Daggers,” as they called themselves, were more than welcoming towards you. You knew it was partly because of your association with Natasha, but you appreciate their kindness nevertheless.
Upon getting to know each of them better throughout the night, you decided that you liked Bob the best. He was quiet, shy, and a bit of an introvert. But he was unabashedly sweet.
Fanboy and Payback were a little more rambunctious for your taste, but they were entertaining and a joy to be around nevertheless.
Your impression of Bradley was slightly tainted from your first interaction with the man, but you could tell he was a good guy.
Overall, you could imagine yourself finding a place among Natasha’s posse. However, this thought was almost a little too good to be true. You curse yourself silently for even entertaining this idea in the first place.
You put back up the walls you’ve built around yourself over the years, not wanting to let them in, only to get disappointed once again. People always leave. They wouldn’t be any different, especially with the nature of their job. It was inevitable. You wouldn’t get too attached.
A commotion has begun to stir up around the billiards tables and your attention gets pulled towards the sharp whistle that leaves Payback’s left. “Hangman, Coyote! Get over here!” He gestures towards the two men.
The crowd parts like the Red Sea, making way for Hangman and Coyote who both sport charming smiles that are sure to make the ladies weak in the knees. You pause your bartending duties, curious to meet the two men. Natasha had told you briefly about both and you were interested to see what they were like in person.
Coyote, just as his callsign, gave you a wolfish smile that suited the features of his dark eyes and wide smile.
Your gaze drifted to the man behind him and your heart stuttered in your ribcage. You’ve never met the man in front of you before, yet for some reason there was an air of familiarity around him that had you dying to get closer to him. Your head cocks to the side as you observe him.
Surely you’d remember meeting a man like him before. With a gorgeous Southern California tan and golden hair that complimented the green of his eyes, he was a sight you knew would be hard to forget. Hangman was just as Natasha had described. His posture and arrogant smile screamed cocky and overconfident. He knew the effect he had on people and he wasn’t afraid to use it to his advantage.
The last thing you expect is for him to catch your wandering eyes. The second his gaze lands on yours, that smile of his vanishes in an instant and he pails. Almost as if he was seeing a ghost.
“Stargirl?” He speaks, shock evident in his tone.
Now that sends your heart into a frenzy. You knew Natasha hadn’t told any of her friends your cherished nickname until she properly introduced you to them. The slip of Hangman’s facade as he makes his way to the bar confuses you just as much as the word he uttered.
Before you’re even given the chance to ask the man how on Earth he knew you, you’re whisked away by the patrons on the other side of the bar who are now calling for your attention.
By the time you have them all taken care of, when you turn around to face the Daggers, Hangman is gone.
You try to ignore the lack of his presence for the rest of the night, distracting yourself with the rest of the group once more, but the look on his face and the way that name fell from his lips wouldn’t leave your thoughts.
Stargirl.
_____________________________________
There’s a warmth that hums in your chest every time you step into this house. Staying at your grandmother’s was your favorite part of summer vacation. Here, you felt like you were transferred to a completely new world. Deep down you knew you were really just in Southern California, but your childish wonder liked to pretend you were somewhere far away from the world you knew.
At your grandmother’s, you could be a pirate whose ship was sunk and washed up onto the shore of the beach house. Your grandmother was a tavern maiden who offered you shelter from bandits who were also looking for the buried treasure.
Or you could pretend that you were a princess and this beach house was your castle. The sand and the sea was your kingdom and every day you would journey through the treacherous waters in search of your one true love.
Most nights, however, you pretended that you never had to leave and face the real world. That you could stay in this particular moment in time, forever. Never being forced to grow up or face the reality that was ahead of you.
As you sat on the wooden deck of the house, bundled up under blankets and drinking hot cocoa with your grandmother as you looked out to the sea, she told you the story of how she and your grandfather met. About the magic of the beach house.
“You’ve heard this story a million times already, my Star,” she chuckled under the pale moonlight. Her features shone in the light, giving her a look of youth that she hadn’t inherited in a long time.
“That’s okay, I want to hear it again,” you smile toothily at her.
She wraps you tight in your arms as she stares out at the sea with a dreamy look in her eyes. “Oh, alright. The first time I saw your grandfather was on the shore of this very beach…”
A place that was once so alive has never felt so dark and empty. You couldn’t even bear to unpack any of your boxes, not wanting to taint the impression that your grandmother had left there. Why had she left this place in your name? She knew you never wanted to come back here and even in the afterlife she had managed to get you to step foot into this house again.
Four years. It has been four years since the last time you were here. Nothing had changed and yet everything had changed. When you looked around, everything was just the way it used to be. Your grandmother’s walls were still littered with picture frames filled with the people she cherished most in this world. Her bookshelves displayed knick knacks from her expeditions around the world. The throw blanket the two of you had knitted the summer of your freshman year of high school still sat neatly folded on the arm of her cream suede couch, almost as if your grandmother had just folded it back up after using it on the deck. If you closed your eyes and took a deep breath, there were still hints of sandalwood and perfume that lingered in the air.
One more step into the foyer was enough to shatter the illusion in your head. One more step gave you a better look at the dust that collected on the furniture from being untouched for years. The cobwebs on the ceiling, a clear sign that your grandmother’s weekly cleaning schedule was not being kept up with. The house was quiet. Quieter than it has ever been. It lacked the joyous laughter and melodic singing your grandmother’s voice used to fill the room with.
You were left with nothing but this house and the memory of her. Unpacking your boxes and touching her things solidified the fact that she was really gone. That she was never going to come back. You couldn’t do it. You couldn’t destroy the one thing you had left of her. The one thing that wasn’t tainted by the sickness that took her away from you.
You’ve been in FighterTown for over a month now and your boxes still lay untouched in the center of the living room. Your knees shake as you toe off your shoes and kick them haphazardly next to the shoe rack.
Throwing yourself onto the couch, you wrap yourself in the blanket that still smells like her and you choke back a sob.
“I need you, grandma,” you whimper. “Why did you have to go?”
_____________________________________
Hangman knocks back another shot, hardly feeling the burn in the back of his throat. He had dragged Coyote from the girl he was flirting with at the bar to resume drinking in the comfort of his apartment instead. He knew Javy was probably pissed and slightly confused at his proposition, but he couldn’t stay at The Hard Deck a second longer knowing you were there.
What the hell were you doing back at North Island? It didn’t matter now, especially after seeing the way you looked at him with absolutely no sign of recognition in your eyes. If that’s how you wanted to play this game, then fine.
“That was her, wasn’t it?” Coyote breaks the heavy silence. “Penny’s new bartender?”
Hangman runs a hand through his hair, unsure of how to answer his friend’s question. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He grabs at the bottle of Tito’s sitting on the coffee table and pours himself another shot.
Coyote snatches the bottle and his shot glass away from him. “That may work with everyone else, but not me.” He looks his friend straight in the face as he asks again, “Was that her?”
Hangman’s heart tightens in his chest as he lets out a shaky exhale. “Yes.”
The confirmation makes his stomach churn and seconds later, he runs to his sink, emptying out all of the night’s contents.
_____________________________________
The serene sounds of birds chirping and the waves crashing onto the shore wakes you from your slumber. You push yourself off the couch, bleary eyed, as you search the cushions blindly for your phone. You must have fallen asleep downstairs the night before. With no luck on finding your phone, you plop back down with a heavy sigh, throwing your arm over your eyes.
Glancing out the big bay window, you’re able to see the light pink and blue hues of the early morning sky. You could just barely see the sun peeking out over the horizon signaling that it was still the early hours of the morning.
Forcing yourself off your makeshift bed, you round the coffee table and instinctively dodge the boxes scattered around the room.
Except, there weren’t any.
You’re immediately snapped out of your sleepy trance, frantically looking around the room with wide eyes.
Your mind begins running a mile a minute upon realizing the lack of clutter. You were robbed. You were sleeping right there on the couch and you got robbed.
But who the hell would want boxes of old stuff when you were sure there were more valuable things to be found in the house?
Shuffling from the room over pauses your spiraling. Whoever it was that stole your boxes was still in the house.
You still have no idea where your phone is and you were not going to be a sitting duck in the middle of a crime.
Glancing around the room, you look for anything that you could use as a weapon against the intruder. You silently pray that your grandmother forgives you in the afterlife for using her antique lamp as a form of self defense.
Taking a deep breath, you quietly yank the lamp on the side table out of the outlet and hold it over your shoulder. You creep into the kitchen on shaky limbs, tightening your grasp on the cold metal that had started to slip from your sweaty palms.
Upon entering the room, you’re met with the figure of a man you’ve never seen before.
The man yelps, almost comically, at the sound of your footsteps and he spins around with a hand on his chest. He’s breathing just as heavily as you are. His wide green eyes meet yours and your heart drops to the pit of your stomach.
Those eyes, you swear you’ve seen them once before. You’re just having a hard time pinpointing where.
Swallowing harshly, you muster up enough courage to make your voice sound strong. “Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my house?”
He throws his hands up in surrender as he backs himself up against the counter. “Jake Seresin. Who the hell are you?”

A Million Little Heartaches: Pandora's Box 💔💫❤️‍🔥 SNEEK PEEK:
March 2026
I’ve curled my legs up under me in an oversized armchair, staring aimlessly at the fire. My empty wine glass is precariously balanced in my hand as I am hypnotized by the flames. Liam’s angry outburst shocked everyone, and his words still ring like poison in my ears:
You abandoned me.
I run through all the things I could’ve said in response instead of just standing there speechless as he ripped me into pieces in front of everybody.
Namely, you made your choice, Liam. And it wasn’t me.
It was never me.
Good ole Lily, forever the consolation prize, I muse, shaking my head.
There’s a hollow feeling in my heart that hasn’t been there for a long, long time.
“Mind if I join you?” Jake’s rumbling voice startles me out of my staring contest with the fire.
Oh god, now? Seriously? is what I’m thinking, but I manage a cordial nod instead, setting my empty glass on the side table next to me.
He sits in the chair facing mine. A glance over reminds me he’s a man now, not a boy, the firelight hitting the weathered but not unattractive lines on what used to be a baby face. The peach fuzz which had tickled my cheek so long ago is now a short, dark beard on a sharper, less rounded jaw. His once sandy hair has darkened some and is peppered with grey. He has aged well.
I can’t imagine how he must be looking at me after all these years, at the changes he must see. I know I’m not the girl I was. I look back at the fire.
“Are you okay?” he asks after a moment of silence.
I roll my eyes over to him and huff a bitter laugh. “Does it matter?”
I shouldn’t have said it like that—Liam’s freak out wasn’t Jake’s fault—but everything feels so fucking raw that I don’t have the wherewithal for a filter.
“It always has,” he says quietly.
