Aspen Jacobsen, the Up and Coming Folk and Country Talent Has Set Performance Dates Throughout Michigan

(Detroit, MI) January 27, 2022 - Ahead of her newest country inspired release, country and folk singer/songwriter Aspen Jacobsen announces her upcoming performances in 2022. “When I write a song, I start with a feeling—my main goal is to have a strong emotional exchange with the audience through my music,” shares Aspen. Not only is she a gifted guitar player, but she’s an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist who also plays bass, mandolin, piano, keyboard, and ukulele. She contributes these skills as an accompanist and arranger for other people’s songs.

Although the year has just begun, Aspen has already been booked for multiple shows for 2022. In February, she will be one of several singer-songwriters featured in the 2nd Annual Interlochen Singers & Songwriters showcase at the Traverse City Opera House, Traverse City Michigan. She is also one of six Interlochen singer-songwriting students that were selected to tour the Midwest together this spring between March 12th and 20th. The details haven't been announced yet but will be posted on Aspen's website before the tour. This summer, she will also be headlining her own show at the Trinity House Theatre on June 4th in Livonia Michigan and will be one of several musicians highlighted in Singers in the Round at The Parliament Room at Otus Supply in Ferndale, Michigan. She will also be playing some of Michigan's most popular music festivals including No-East'r Music and Art Festival (6/10-12), Buttermilk Jamboree (6/17-19), and the Wheatland Music Festival (9/11-13).

Her new single, “Shouldn’t Give A Damn,” out January 28, is her take on toxic relationships in a modern country style, similar to Kacey Musgraves and an early Taylor Swift. The song will also be reimagined as a separate acoustic single later this year, featuring producer Dominic Davis on upright bass. "Shouldn't Give a Damn" is the second release from Aspen's 2022 limited-edition CD that is available for purchase on her website aspenjacobsen.com/music. She is only publishing 500 of these CDs and is personally signing and numbering each of them. For $40 fans will receive a CD while supporting her musical endeavors! These signed, limited edition CDs are planned to ship in August.

Aspen Jacobsen’s Americana, Folk, and Country sounds are not one typically heard with artists as young as Aspen. She hopes to carry the traditions of this genre while also making it more palatable with her generation.

Aspen previously explored musical theater, professional acting and opera, and these formative experiences may account for her polished onstage demeanor. She has played major music festivals in Michigan including Arts Beats and Eats; Wheatland Music Festival; Earthworks Harvest Gathering; Ann Arbor Summer Festival; and the Buttermilk Jamboree. She has also been invited to perform as an opener at premier Michigan listening rooms such as The Ark, 20 Front Street, Trinity House, and the Grand Rapids Listening Room. In 2019, Aspen was the youngest singer-songwriter to ever be featured in the Radio DJ Showcase at the Folk Alliance Region Midwest annual conference.

As she prepares, she’s also writing new music amidst her bustling life as a 17 year old musician, balancing school, recording sessions, rehearsals, and applying to colleges. “Sometimes I wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and see guitar string marks ingrained on my face,” she quips. “But I know who I am, and I know what path I’m on. Every time I perform, I pour out my heart and soul and I feel my purpose.”

More About Aspen Jacobsen

At just 9 years of age, Aspen found her purpose while busking for tips with a little red ukulele. Since then, the prodigiously gifted musician has earned awards and scholarships; has actively released EPs and singles; and she has performed at a variety of well-respected venues and festivals. Today, Aspen furthers a variety of Americana styles through a series of personal and purposeful singles.

Her story exudes classic Americana mysticism. Aspen bought a guitar purchased from busking, and, although she had your typical parents-mandated piano lessons previously, she immediately took to playing roots music on stringed instruments like it was fated. “I have no idea where it came from—something just clicked within me,” she says. She learned the basics by ear—a method that works for her today—and, at the age of 10, began songwriting. Soon after, Aspen was performing at listening rooms and festivals and was awarded multiple scholarships for her astounding musicality.

To date, Aspen has released two critically acclaimed EPs, and her songs have garnered prime recognition and nominations from such prominent songwriting competitions as the Independent Music Awards; Alternative Country Best Song Category; Blues & Roots Radio's Song Contest; and International Songwriting Competition's Teen Category. Aspen was awarded a scholarship to attend the Singer-Songwriter program at the Interlochen Arts Academy, one of the most prestigious boarding fine arts high schools in the United States. Most recently, Aspen has the distinction of being one of six singer-songwriter finalists in the YoungArts 2022 program, a competition which receives more than 7000 applications per year. She also holds sponsorships with Fishman, Reunion Blues gig bags and instrument cases, and Shubb Capos.

As of late, Aspen has been recording in Nashville and consistently releasing new songs which feature personal perspectives on social issues. The first single in this new project of songs is “Damned Dynasty,” a smoldering dose of indie-folk with tasteful melodic blues-guitar licks, an ear-worm vocal motif, and vocals that veer from honeyed low-tones to soaring high-tones. The minimalist production here leaves ample room to soak in Aspen’s insights on faith and religion. Her first verse is viscerally thought-provoking.

Aspen tells stories like a country artist and speaks her mind like a folk musician. Her personal and progressive original songs recall the approach of Joni Mitchell, and Ani DiFranco—two artists steeped in music history but not bound to it.

Won’t you dance with me — Chapter 6

Summary: Asking Maya to the school dance should not be this difficult.

(Set in the same timeline as, and a sequel to, my earlier fic Sanctuary)

Shawn comes home to find — to his utter astonishment — Katy listening at Maya’s door.

“We’re allowed to do that??”

“No!” But Katy doesn’t move from where her ear is pressed against the door panel. “Now shhh! Lucas just arrived at her window a couple of minutes ago, I think he’s going to ask her to the dance.”

Being a parent is so confusing, Shawn thinks as he puts his ear to the door too. But at least his evening with four dumb boys doesn’t seem to be a complete waste. The cowboy actually works fast when prodded.

They both listen; they can hear Maya’s voice....

When Maya finds the sheet of paper — it fell out of one of her several sketchpads, which is why she didn’t see it before; she hasn’t opened this particular sketchpad this week until now — she doesn’t know whether to laugh or to scream in exasperation.

It’s the funniest, most ridiculous thing she’s ever seen. And she’s surprised that after all these years of knowing Lucas, she had no idea that he was this bad at drawing. It looks like something made by a five-year-old.

It’s also downright frustrating. Lucas had asked her to the dance after all, and she had no idea.

Then again, she has no idea what to make of his behaviour this past week either. She’s found him snooping around through her things several times, looking shifty, and disappearing whenever he spotted her. During the evenings, when the group does their homework together at Topanga’s, he’s asked to borrow several of her textbooks, claiming he has forgotten his own at home or in his school locker.

Since all of this is extremely unlike Lucas, it has obviously made her suspicious. But the couple of times she’s tried to confront him about it, he has laughed it off, changed the subject, and actually tried to distract her once with a Danish. And earlier this evening, after her latest attempt, he’d run off home halfway on some flimsy excuse about his mamma needing his help.

Only now that she holds the evidence in her hand does she realise this is what he must have been looking for. Obviously, after asking someone else to go with him, Lucas hadn’t wanted her to see his dance ask and was trying to get it back without letting her know about it.

Maya doesn’t know what to think. Had he become tired of waiting for her to find the paper, and decided to go with someone else instead? Or maybe he’d only asked her as a backup? And when the girl he actually wanted to go with said yes, he’d tried to get the dance ask back before Maya saw it? But then, why would he put in so much effort into this ask? Or maybe this is no effort for him at all, just scribbles that he knows will make a girl laugh?

Or — and Maya can’t believe she’s even considering this, since she doesn’t think Lucas might be that dumb, though recent behaviour certainly indicates otherwise — had he accidentally put the dance ask in the wrong girl’s locker?

All these questions make her want to hunt him down and just shake the answers out of him.

She’s considering doing just that when a sudden noise from her window makes her jump. She looks up just as Lucas, with one leg stuck on the ledge of her window, trips and lands sprawled on her bedroom floor by the bed.

Maya can’t help it. She lets out a loud, explosive snort of laughter. It becomes worse when he scowls at her, and she has to cover her mouth to try and stifle her guffaws.

He frowns as he gets to his feet, but his expression quickly softens, and for a second, he gives her that warm, indulgent look that he seems to reserve exclusively for her. Then he spots the sheet of paper in her hand, and nervousness fills his face.

Maya stops laughing too. “Is this what you were looking for all those times you were snooping around in my locker and my backpack, and even through my art supplies?” She holds up the sheet.

Lucas rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. “I wanted to ask you to the dance, and I wanted it to be funny and special. But I thought you said yes to going with Charlie, so I tried to get it back.”

“What on earth made your cowboy brain think I was going with Charlie?” she demands.

“I overheard him ask you!” he says defensively. “Or, well, that’s what I thought I heard... And then I thought you said yes.”

She hides her face in her hands and lets out a muted scream of pure aggravation. “Why would I want to go with Charlie? Besides, he likes Brenda!”

“I didn’t know that, okay! I thought— you two— you’ve been spending a lot of time with him recently.”

“We spent at best a few hours together last week to work on the English assignment!”

It clicks then, when Lucas grimaces and refuses to meet her eye.

“Don’t tell me you were jealous!”

He scowls. “I’m not.”

“Oh my god, you’re jealous!”

He usually takes her teasing in stride, even teases back, but now he seems to be short on patience as well. “Will you go to the dance with me or not??” he half yells.

“Really Huckleberry? You’re asking me now? After you’ve asked someone else? Do you learn nothing at all?”

“No, that’s okay,” Lucas assures her hastily. “Brenda and I sorted it out, she’s going with Charlie.”

“You asked Brenda?” Maya sputters on a laugh. “No wonder he was so pissed off!”

“I was going to ask you.” He takes a step closer. “Last week. The day I got you the taco. I was going to give it to you instead of flowers. But Charlie was with you, being all Charlie Gardner, and staring into your eyes sappily, and going on about how he cared more about the girl than the ask, blah blah.” He rolls his eyes. “And he never mentioned Brenda, or any other girl. What’s a guy supposed to think? And then, you said yes!”

“I said ‘yes, that works’, not ‘yes, I’ll go with you’!” She gives him a stern look, but she can’t help the way her lips twitch trying not to smile at the look of disgust on Lucas’s face. “It may not have had flowers or balloons or a disco ball or all of the above, but it was still a classic Charlie Gardner dance ask. The kind Riley loves. And Brenda apparently,” she adds.

“Oh no, Brenda’s was worse. He made her a frickin’ craft project, with petals to write out his ask on a banner.”

“Yikes.” Maya winces. “Way to go overboard, Charlie. But you!” She rounds on him. “You actually thought I’d go for that gooey sap-fest?”

“How was I to know?” he mutters darkly.

“Because you know me!” she retorts, irritated. “Just like I know you. I guessed correctly that you might ask me to the dance with a taco instead of flowers, Ranger Rick, because that’s the just the kind of dumb, dorky thing you’d do. Of course, that was before you shot your own dance ask in the foot.”

He ignores the mangled metaphor — one she chose, no doubt, because of its Wild West overtones — and the fact that she called him dumb, and grabs her hand. “I still want you to go with me.”

She gives him a stony glance.

“I don’t have a taco, but you’re holding the rest of my ask.”

Maya looks down at the sketchbook paper again. There’s a stick figure cowboy on a horse, which is supposed to represent Lucas, holding what looks like a giant red inside out, blown away umbrella in the direction of a stick figure girl with big blonde hair, obviously meant to be Maya. There’s a speech bubble at the top of the page, pointing to the cowboy, proclaiming “Wanna giddy-up with me to the jamboree?” in big letters.

She tries not to roll her eyes (poetry is obviously not his strong suit either, considering the lengths he’s gone to make that rhyme), tries to smother the grin that’s threatening to break free. And fails.

Lucas sees her face, and sighs and ducks his head. “Go on, I know you’re dying to tell me what you think.” But he’s trying to hide his own smile.

“Well, stick-figure-Lucas’s horse looks more like a dog, and stick-figure-Maya’s hair is bigger than the rest of her body.”

He grimaces. “Yeah, I can draw still life and stuff, but I’m no good at human or animal figures.”

“Nooo kidding.” But there’s nothing more than teasing laughter in her tone. “It also took me a minute to understand that stick-figure-Maya is holding a paintbrush, not a broom.”

He snorts at that, and sidles closer. “Anything else?”

“Yeah. Why are you giving me an inside out umbrella, Huckleberry?”

“That’s not an umbrella, that’s a flower!”

“It’s bigger than you and me!”

“It does not look like an umbrella,” he insists.

Outside Maya’s room, Katy and Shawn — an ear each still pressed to their daughter’s bedroom door — exchange glances as the teenage couple inside begins to bicker.

Shawn rubs a hand over his face. “He’s supposed to be asking her to the dance.”

“He just did.”

“Isn’t she going to say yes?”

“Probably.”

“I never thought I’d say this, but I actually feel sorry for the cowboy.”

“Shhhh!” Katy flaps her hand at him. “Listen!”

“.... Why is it so quiet?”

Lucas isn’t really sure what happened, but at that moment, he couldn’t care less. One second he and Maya are arguing about his silly drawing, the next second, she’s jerked him down by his shirt collar and pressed her lips to his.

His heart stops beating for a second as his mind scrambles to make sense of what’s happening: Maya is kissing him.

Then he instinctively responds, one hand going around her to pull her close while he buries the other in her hair, and kisses her back. And it’s like— it’s like— it feels as if the billions of stars that were in the sky the night he almost kissed Maya by the campfire in Texas are now exploding under his skin.

Maya seems to melt against him with a sigh, which sends a surge of smug pride shooting through him. But it also makes his knees go wobbly, and he staggers backwards with her until his back hits the wall to better support both of them.

It takes him a full minute to get his bearings when they finally break the kiss, and he blinks to clear his head from the Maya+kiss-induced haze. He’s devoutly thankful he hasn’t pulled a Farkle and simply slid to the floor in a dead faint. Maya would have never let him live that down.

She’s still standing in the circle of his arms, looking as dazed as he feels. Her cheeks are pink.

“Okay.”

“What?” he says, rather stupidly, still reeling.

“I’ll go with you.”

“Where?” he asks, bewildered.

She raps her knuckles on his nose. “To the dance, Hopalong! Keep up!”

He thinks if he grins any wider, it’ll split his face.

“By the way, Huckleberry, you owe me a taco!”

“But— but— but—” Shawn sputters as Katy drags him away from Maya’s door, and into the kitchen. “Shouldn’t we interrupt them and supervise, or something?”

“It’s been a long time coming. Let her kiss the boy in peace.” There’s an all too knowing gleam in Katy’s eye. “You big softie. You think I don’t know where you went earlier tonight? I know what you did!”

“What? What are you talking about?” He tries to look innocent. And fails.

“Nice try, honey. She really, really likes him.” Katy hugs Shawn tight, smiling up at him as his arms go around her. “And Lucas is stupidly in love with her, even if he doesn’t know it yet. Teenage love, but love all the same. He’s good for our Maya. And you know that too, which is why you made that happen!”

“I didn’t mean to do that!” Shawn says, appalled. “He was just supposed to ask her to the dance! There isn’t supposed to be any kissing!”

“The way they’ve been eyeing each other, let’s be thankful it’s just kissing,” Katy says fervently, then sighs. “We’re going to have to have the talk with Maya soon.”

Shawn is so utterly and completely horrified by that thought that the only thing he can manage is a very Cory-like “Aaarrgh!”

VIDEO: Scouts in Langley learn how to communicate during emergency situations

In the al fresco chapel at Camp McLean in Langley, VA7NF was discussing the art of interacting long-distance by ham radio to a small group of scouts.That is the amateur radio callsign for Stan Williams, one of numerous volunteers teaching scouts how to keep communications in case of an emergency.Elsewhere in the youth

camp owned and operated by Scouts Canada in Campbell Valley Park, a wire antenna was strung up from some trees beside the chapel and nearby, a 100-foot-tall boom box tower ignored the tall trees in a clearing.Over at the main lodge, scouts were on the internet, communicating

with their equivalents across the globe in supervised chat rooms.About 100 scouts and 40 volunteers took part in the weekend occasion, part of the around the world Jamboree On The Air and Jamboree On The Internet(JOTA-JOTI ). It is the largest hunting event worldwide with over 1.8 million participating.

"I believe the count of countries (gotten in touch with)is up around 40,"stated organizer Greg Kear.That included interactions with fellow scouts in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Australia, he said.Some scouts were even geting a brief introduction to the"lost art "of Morse code, Kear stated, the dots-and-dash code that is still

used by some ham radio operators.Despite the Web, cellular phone, email and modern communications, every year whole regions discover themselves in the dark. When twisters, fires, storms, landslides, ice and vandalism, sever internet, cell phone and email connections, the one consistent service that has actually never stopped working has been amateur or"ham"radio.They are federally certified radio operators, who can supply backup communications for everything from neighborhood events to regional emergency operations centres.Scouts participated in a variety of occasions consisting of a"Foxhunt"using portable handheld systems to look for concealed transmitters in the woods surrounding the camp interacting using orbiting satellites well as UHF/VHF radio.

"It's very instructional and enjoyable,"Kear said.He stated special thanks were due to the Surrey Amateur Radio Club, Langley Amateur Radio Association, and TELUS for offering time to assist in the event.The very first JOTA/JOTI was held in 1957.

Five things you’ll find my bedroom:

· Books. So many books. So many books that I don’t have space on the shelves for them so they are pilled hereabouts

· Big bundle of clothes in the washing basket which aren’t actually dirty but stuff I’m either going to wear or have tried on

· Usually one of the dogs lol

· A big box of lotions and potions I get from Boots to test and review

· A mountain of sketchbooks and art supplies

Five things I want to do with my life:

· Travel all the over the world. I’ve got huge wanderlust and sadly not the bank balance yet to make that possible tut

· Get my own place because that would just be perfect

· Get healthy enough to be able to learn to drive again and pass my test

· Get married to some cuddly dork and have a couple of children

· Have another solo exhibition

Five Things I’m into right now:

· Outlander oooooomg I’ve been re-bingewatching it of an evening and I’ve just become totally hooked, moreso that I was the first time I watched it. I want my own Jamie! *grabby hands*

· Il Giovane Montalbano (The Young Montalbano). It’s an Italian prequel detective series about the early life of Salvo Montalbano, which I started watching last year, so I’m now on S2. It’s hilarious as much as it is serious with epic bromances that are certainly epic and it’s so quirky with random slapstick humor but also clever and gritty. It’s also really fascinating (to me anyway) to hear the differences in the Sicilian dialect to the generic Italian (because it’s in Italian and mercifully not over-dubbed but subtitled)

· Making my own paints from scratch. I’ve only have limited success with the tempera paint so I’m not sure about upgrading to trying my hand at making oil paint just yet

· Studying old master artists

· Herbology

Five things on my to-do list:

· Pass driving test and get a car

· Get my ears pierced (though I’ve been saying that for the past 10 years lol)

· Go travelling

· Get a place of my own

· Plan where I’m taking the amazing @hacash on her visit oop norf around Liverpool at the end of this month ahhhhh SO EXCITED!

Five things people may not know about me:

· I won a first aid award when I was a teen for ‘saving’ my brother’s life after he began chocking after an epileptic seizure. It was in all the local papers and on the radio and I won a life-saver award and subsequently took part in the ‘Save a Life Campaign’ representing youth, which was to raise awareness of the important of learning basic first aid. I got to go to London and there was a huge ceremony and photoshoot with famous faces at the time. I subsequently became a first aider with St John’s Ambulance, and randomly on the course achieved SFX makeup certificate for all manner of gruesome makeup so if you want gory effects for Halloween, I’m the one to go to teehee I also took part in this massive first aider jamboree in Germany and helped build a refugee shelter there.

· I once for a few years went to a drama workshop and took part in a stage productions of ‘Grease’ and ‘Our Day Out’.I am a soprano/ mezzzo soprano singer but haven’t sung in a choir for so long- I lost my confidence.

· I’ve exhibited art in three local(ish) art galleries and had my own solo exhibition down in Hereford when I was fresh out of Uni

· I wanted to be a ballet dancer when I was younger and went to ballet and tap lessons, but of course my joints scuppered that. And then I wanted to be an army nurse, but again poor health scuppered that, though I still have a interest in nursing and first aid

· I achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award even after tearing my achilles tendon while on my Gold Trial Exhibition in Snowdonia, North Wales- which of course I hid from our leaders because I knew one was paramedic who would have sent me home lol and because I’m stubborn and tough northerner who wasn’t going to let extreme pain or risk of permanent injury stop me from achieving the final DofE award- that’s just not the northern way of doing things dammit. Which I did! And against dr’s advice lol and was made all the more emotional by the fact I had struggled on the last Test Exhibition with my leg doubly strapped up, in chronic pain, but my team mates were just incredible and shared my rucksack load to take the weight off my injury, as well as in the last few kms helping me to walk. I had a MASSIVE bruise and swelling all the way up my leg afterwards and couldn’t weight-bear on it for over a month (which was tricky as I use to walk 1 ½ to sixthform everyday back then) but it was well worth it. I swear doing DofE still remains one of the greatest experiences of my life. In sixthform and went on to become a young leader to train the next lot of DofE hopefuls, teaching them how not to die in the wilds of Wales. So if you need anyone to help you navigate the mountains of Wales or help you survive, I’m your gal lol I’m very outdoorsy (or was/am joints allowing) I love hiking, canoeing, kayaking, gorge walking, abseiling, caving etc you name it

Playing identity politics with our safety

We give some credit to Madison Ald. Michael Tierney. “The number of shots fired incidents we have endured is appalling,” he writes from the SE side of town. “People want to know what the city is going to do prevent more of these type of shootings from happening in the future.”

That, people surely do. So here is what the City of Madison is doing about the upsurge in shootings — an 80% increase April-June from last year.

• Paying for “artwork” portraying police as Nazi Waffen SS pigs.

Overall, the cost of making the fidget spinner was $150, out of pocket. Most of the supplies were bought at Home Depot, but they were able to utilize other supplies and tools at the student-run UTDesign Makerspace facility located at Synergy Park North, where students can use arts, crafts, electronics and 3D printing to build and create.

As far as building the fidget spinner, the composing process involved making a design on a software program, three layers of plywood, a large jigsaw to cut out the shape and then sanding until the bearings fit into the holes.

This new fidget spinner sets three new world records: for the largest forbearing fidget spinner, for the longest spinning and for the heaviest.
