Lavoravano insieme da poco meno di due anni – dall’ottobre del 1952 – quando, discutendo nel loro studio presso ilCavendish Laboratory (il dipartimento di fisica di Cambridge), il 28 febbraio 1953 si resero conto di avercela fatta. Di aver svelato un mistero che da 84 anni (il dna era stato scoperto nel 1869) occupava la mente e le notti di decine di scienziati: la struttura dell’acido desossiribonucleico, conosciuto meglio come dna, sede del patrimonio genetico di ogni essere vivente. I due ricercatori erano, si racconta, insolenti, arroganti ed enormemente competitivi. Un indizio del loro carattere effettivamente sta anche nel modo in cui diedero l’annuncio delle loro scoperte la settimana successiva. Entrando all’ Eagle Pub di Cambridge, Crick esordì con la frase: “ Abbiamo scoperto il segreto della vita”. Oliver hadn’t been in the most sociable of moods as of late, admittedly downtrodden with how things had transpired between him and Russ. There was a void there, now, in the space the man had once occupied, and while Oliver knew better than to be surprised by that, it still hurt all the same. He knew Russ was leaving a mark as he’d left it; he just didn’t realize the severity of it until after he’d gone. 

Still, James had clearly needed to get out for a bit, and, as Oliver’s oldest friend, he’d never turn him down. Oliver made his way to the bar with his hands in his pockets, his warm breath hitting the cold air and unfurling in tiny billowing clouds as he dodged and weaved holiday shoppers hitting up the local boutiques. He pushed open the door and spotted James instantaneously, grinning at the sight of him as he ambled his way over to the stool next to him. “Hey, man. Sorry it took me so long--late client.” He slipped his coat off his shoulders and hung it on the back of the stool. “And, like, everyone and their mother is out Christmas shopping, which is a real slap in the face for people like me who wait until the last minute and order everything online.”
