09.44 GMT: Eintracht Frankfurt have taken a swipe at Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane by posting a message on their twitter account in Spanish to highlight the talent of Luka Jovic, who scored twice for the German club in a win over Schalke on Sunday.

Jovic, who re-joined Eintracht on loan from the remainder of the season last week after a disappointing 15-month spell at Real Madrid, came off the bench and scored twice in 28 minutes in his team’s 3-1 triumph.

Garcia, 20, is available on a free transfer next summer and won’t sign a new contract at City. The Spain centre-back had reportedly agreed to move for €8m this month, but Barcelona acting president Carles Tusquets has suggested that the deal has to be agreed by all three of the club’s presidential candidates before it can go ahead.

And with the presidential elections due for Jan. 24 now postponed until March, Victor Font, Joan Laporta and Toni Freixa didn’t agree over the signing.

Meyer, once a rising star with the German national team, had his contract at Crystal Palace terminated last week to end a dismal two-and-a-half years at the Premier League club.

08.31 GMT: Melbourne City have bolstered their A-League defence for the long-term, signing Portuguese centre-back Nuno Reis on a three-year deal.

Sources told ESPN on Saturday that Ozil has a verbal agreement with Arsenal to terminate his contract and will join Fenerbahce in the coming days.

Fenerbahce posted images of Ozil late Sunday, stopping short of officially announcing a done deal by stating: “Our club is bringing Mesut Ozil to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes.”

Ozil, 32, has not played for Arsenal since March and was left out of the club’s Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the season. He has long been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Turkey’s second-most decorated club.

Trio of big clubs want Bellerin

Hector Bellerin may be set to leave Arsenal during the summer transfer window, as has been reported by Calciomercato.

Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are all reportedly showing an interest in the right-back.

There has long been talk around the Spaniard’s future at the Emirates and that is refusing to go away as clubs already look to the next transfer window — even with this one not yet being over.

Bellerin has been a key man for Mikel Arteta this term, starting 16 of the Gunners’ 18 Premier League matches so far.

Inter struggling to pay Hakimi instalment

Inter Milan are struggling to pay Real Madrid an instalment they owe them for signing Achraf Hakimi, reports AS.

The expected €40m fee is split up into instalments, with the first €10m of that due. However, the Italian giants are struggling financially due to how heavily Inter owners Suning Group have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

With the two clubs having an amicable relationship, a new deadline has been set for March 30.

BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 29 (PIA) - - The national government  pursues a  united front in ensuring that education will become a strong foundation in bringing socio – economic growth in the country for all Filipinos to achieve “Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay” for all.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles, in his keynote address during the Philippine Normal University Teacher Quality and Quality Assurance Summit at Teachers’ Camp here, affirmed that the government under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has been working hard to ensure access to quality education in the country.

Nograles reported that from July 2016 to December 2018, 63,024 new classrooms and 4,136 Technical – Vocational Laboratory were constructed, while 139,897 new teaching items were created and over 40.85 million textbooks and instructional materials  were printed.

Access to tertiary education also greatly improved with the enactment of the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act wherein for Academic Year 2018 – 2019 alone, about 1.18 million students enjoyed free higher education in 111 state universities and colleges and 78 local state universities. For Technical – Vocational Education and Training,  there were 10.17 million individuals trained  with 7.07M  of graduates certified under the TESDA National Certification program, he added.

Given all the accomplishments in improving access, Nograles   said the challenge now is on shifting the focus to quality, which is why Education Secretary Leonor Briones launched the “Sulong EduKalidad” program last December 2019.  

Sulong EduKalidad focuses on four pillars namely  K to 12 curriculum review and update; improving the learning environment; teachers’ upskilling and reskilling,  and engagement of stakeholders for support and collaboration. 

Nograles also disclosed  that  an inter - agency Technical Working Group for Teacher Quality  which he  chairs  is looking into the pre – service education of teachers.  It is also currently working on proposing a legislation that will strengthen a government body or instrumentality that will become an oversight body dedicated to teacher quality.

Highlighting the importance of teachers’ quality as vital determinant of quality education, Nograles also called  for a continuing partnership for such effort.

“With PNU being a National Center for Teacher Education, it is in the best position to effect quality and lasting changes to teacher education”, he stressed.

“We enjoin PNU to rally behind the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers and other similar standards that the DepEd will soon adopt; lead the way to a revitalize teachers’ education curriculum that responds  to the kinds of citizens that the country need, and continue in assisting the government in ensuring that quality education contributes to the nation’s economic and social development and the eradication of poverty in the country”, he added.

According to the United Nations, across the globe, people older than 65 now outnumber children under five for the first time in history. In 1960, the average woman gave birth to five children in her lifetime; by 2017, that ratio had dropped to 2.4 children per woman. Meanwhile, our life expectancy has increased around the world. In 1960, the average lifespan was just over 52 years of age; in 2017 the life expectancy was 72.1

Today, more than 60 percent of married households with children have two income earners.2 Yet many still struggle to make ends meet. That makes it difficult to save for both the exponentially rising cost of college and retirement. With fewer children in subsequent generations to contribute to the economy and bolster Social Security and Medicare programs, there may be fewer resources available to support the number of older adults in the future.3

It’s worth remembering that 2019 began with the longest U.S. government shutdown in history.4 On top of that challenging start to the year, some economists and media pundits have been suggesting we may be headed for a recession in the future.5 It’s tough enough to plan for retirement during a robust economy, but to forge ahead during uncertain times can be stressful. Do you reduce retirement plan contributions to bolster an emergency savings fund? Do you reposition assets in your investment portfolio? One strategy for retirement planning during uncertain times is to create multiple income streams. For example, you could purchase an annuity contract for an insurer-guaranteed stream of lifetime income. In one recent report, several Brookings Institution fellows noted, “For many people, acquiring an appropriately consumer protective and reasonably priced income annuity with at least a portion of their savings will still be the best choice for retirement income, and for many others it will play a key role in a broader post-retirement financial strategy.”6

One reason an annuity can help address uncertainty is because none of us knows how long we are going to live. Therefore, it’s difficult to know how much money to save or how much you can afford to spend each year in retirement. An annuity can help address these financial uncertainties because it offers an option for income for life — as well as the life of your spouse. It’s important to remember that annuities are insurance contracts designed for retirement or other long-term needs. They provide guarantees of principal and credited interest, subject to surrender charges.

As for how much income you’ll need in retirement, be aware that it will likely change as you get older. According to recent research from the National Bureau of Economic Research, people age 70 to 75 spend 10.17% of their household income on health care; after age 80, that share rises to 15.25%. Money spent on domestic services increases from 1.28% to 5.22% during those same time periods.7

Football's divisional round viewership down 16 percent

NEW YORK/January 17, 2018(AP)(STL.News)— Television viewership for the NFL‘s divisional round playoff games was down 16 percent compared to last year, offering ammunition to critics of the football league, but there are a couple of compelling explanations.

The weekend’s four games averaged 30.43 million viewers, off from 36.22 million the year before, the Nielsen company said. The NFL has received some blowback from President Donald Trump and his supporters for protests involving the National Anthem, with some suggesting that had something to do with the audience being smaller for games this season.

Last year had a blockbuster game between two rivals with national followings, Green Bay and Dallas, which reached more than 48 million viewers. Nothing came close this year, with the most-watched game, involving the furious finish between Minnesota and New Orleans, reaching 35.64 million people.

Two of last year’s games were also in prime-time, which naturally boosts the audience. This year only one of the games — Tennessee at New England — was in prime-time, and that was non-competitive.

CBS easily won the week in prime time, averaging 10.7 million viewers. Fox had 6.7 million, NBC had 4.6 million, ABC had 4.3 million, Univision had 1.5 million, ION Television had 1.2 million, Telemundo had 1.1 million and the CW had 1 million.

ESPN was the week’s most popular cable network, averaging 4.52 million viewers in prime-time. Fox News Channel had 2.15 million, MSNBC had 1.93 million, HGTV had 1.48 million and USA had 1.3 million.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.9 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightly News” had 9.7 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 7.3 million.
