Tierlist part 6: Brainfuck

Eso lang time! Brain fuck is one of the more known eso langs but has a weird reputation for being cursed. I find it quite cool as such a simple construction of a language can lead to Turing-completeness. The main problem is that the smaller language nanofuck has been discovered. But it is still a solid A tier until picofuck is discovered.

Thanks to a universal love of coffee, fans of the larger NCIS-verse this Monday night got an update, of sorts, on the teams based out of Los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawai’i and Sydney.

In this week’s episode of CBS‘ NCIS, titled “Bad Blood,” Special Agent Timothy (Farragut) McGee (played by Sean Murray) put on his World’s Best Dad hat to help his and Delilah’s forever-off-screen twins do well with their school’s annual winter fundraiser.

The product he was shilling? Coffee, in three flavors: Fire Brew (with a touch of habanero that Torres liked), Mocha Mania, and Jitter Joe (which is packed with “three times the caffeine”).

McGee wound up not alone in peddling the boxes of brew; Kasie (Diona Reasonover), a huge fan of the Jitter Joe blend, got to helping him work the phones, and at one point she was even heard wrapping a call with the Sydney, Australia office.

But the mentions of other NCIS teams didn’t end there. Far from it.

Later, in Kasie’s lab, one side of her whiteboard detailed the sales she had brokered thus far with the other offices. No reference was made to these names and tick marks, but if you hit pause, you were rewarded with an update on at least a few of the agents still solving naval crimes in the Aloha State, the Big Easy and L.A.

Yes, NCIS: Sydney‘s Mackey (played by Olivia Swann) has loaded up on more than a dozen boxes of the McGee twins’ coffee; maybe it will show up in a Friday night episode of the recently returned international offshoot?

But far more exciting is that fact that Dwayne Pride (played by Scott Bakula back in the day) is still heading up the NOLA outpost; both Kensi Blye and G. Callen (Daniela Ruah and Chris O’Donnell) are still working out of the Office of Special Projects in downtown Los Angeles; and Jane Tennant and Ernie Malik (Vanessa Lachey and Jason Antoon) are keeping the Oahu team properly caffeinated.

How did NCIS settle on this particular sampling of names? That’s a question for the writer of the episode and/or the prop department. But why not throw #Kacy fans a bone? Does the absence of Hetty Lange’s name amongst the team leaders from the other offices mean that she was never found by Sam and Callen? And why does NOLA need so little java?

But honestly java is fun imo. Python is fine too but ive had alot more time with java

you love the rain.

there’s this certain serenity that accompanies those pretty dew drops. maybe it’s in the way they pitter patter upon the asphalt. or perhaps it’s the striking color palette of your umbrella that contrasts the skies’ gloomy visage.

(people always did say that lemons make the best remedy. you just so happen to have more than several duplicates of the citrus fruit printed on your shield.)

of course, there’s some frustration that comes with sudden rainfall. such as wearing white shoes that already get teased by fellow footwear through the method of stepping on them. you also can’t forget calculating how much force you must put into leaping over puddles like you’re competing in the olympics.

(well it’s shoes vs. life. and seeing as how even speed bumps can’t prevent drivers from embracing their inner dominic torreto, you’ll take your chances with the soaked footwear.)

but there is no serenity, white shoes, puddles, or fast and furious au characters.

it’s just you and heeseung. your umbrella and his (one vibrant noon and the other, bland midnight). and heavy rainfall lingering by the corner.

you and him; we and us.

at first, you thought it was merely a dream. maybe you stayed up too late and too often—to the point where even when you’re awake, your restless mind wrapped you up in such vivid scenarios.

(if only it was that active during class discussions. then your grades would be the only thing you would have been worrying over during that week.)

after the words came the gesture. and the thing about it is it doesn’t matter how hard you tried to convince yourself otherwise.

there was no way your mind could suddenly concoct the feeling that came out of his java chip-stained lips against yours. nor could it accurately etch the firm yet careful press of his hands upon your waist—a grip you’d become accustomed to later rather than sooner.

(another thing to acknowledge is that no matter how familiar you become with that little habit of his, it doesn’t stop being a trigger. you know.. for the fireworks that sear across your body because those lithe fingertips love retracing their prints on your bare skin.)

but now he has a hand wrapped around the handle of his umbrella. its partner is tucked safely in his coat pocket; as if the thick material would keep the tremors at bay.

and you? you’re hoping this is merely a dream.

because if there’s any best time for your mind to get imaginative, it’s now.

you were the endgame.

so many things look good on heeseung. in fact, if you wanted to, you could compile a whole book filled with things that complement the raven-haired male. that would have been a unique gift for your dating anniversary..

‘have been’ being the key word.

“alam mo..” your stupid voice is already on the verge of breaking. but your stubbornness does not understand the concept of timing, hence why you’re determined to follow through. “kahit maikli lang ang panahon na binigay sa atin, ang dami kong naranasan at naramdaman. higit sa lahat, naging masaya ako. kaya, salamat.. bambi.”

even though you can’t remember it vividly anymore, you can recall the way his lips waned into a meek smile. and just like how the icing can’t be complete without the cherry (you dislike icing, he constantly picks off cherries—the irony), the crimson hue on the tips of his ears always accompany his replication of the glowing crescent hung above your heads.

fuck it. you no longer care if the downpour drenches you; glues your clothes to your skin.

your umbrella falls limp by your side while you wrap your arms around heeseung. it hurts and soothes your aching soul when you feel him immediately copy your gesture.

“i love you.” you murmur into his shoulder.

“i love you too.”

one of you has to pull away. it’s a known fact; an idea neither of you want to accept.. but that’s just how reality works, doesn’t it?

heeseung decides to sort of take one for the team. it doesn’t fully count when his hands merely travel back to a familiar place: your waist.

after two days—fourty eight (48) hours of not being able to rest his trembling hands upon that space, he’s afraid it’s fading from his mind. one more time, the cold pads of his fingers walk across those invisible lines. he caresses the unfamiliar spanse, commits them to memory again.

then, with plenty of reluctance, he takes his hands off to grasp something important to you. a sheepish laugh echoes from the depths of his cracked heart as he holds your umbrella above your head. “hindi ko alam kung kailangan mo pa ‘to..”

“oo nga, parang walang kwenta na gamitin yan ngayon.” you reply, the shadow of a smile lingering on your countenance.

after sharing some deliberation and more laughter, you keep the shield over your head. heeseung chooses the same approach, despite his raven tresses already clinging to his forehead. it makes sense, seeing as how the conclusion you two fell upon is that getting sick is just like almost every other aspect in life; it isn’t guaranteed.

just as you begin your walk to your house, he calls out your name. you turn on your heel to see him standing there, looking at you with a golden gleam in his doe eyes.

“sana kapag pwede na, pwede pa.”

"파이토치 첫걸음"

먹고 살기 위해 새로운 삽질 시작한 얘기. 십 년 넘도록 나에게 일용할 양식을 줬으나 프로그래밍하는 재미가 없었던 자바(JAVA) 언어 굴레에서 벗어나기 위해 작년부터 고랭(Go Lang)과 파이썬을 각각 익혔���. 결과적으로 고랭은 폭망 (내 주변엔 이걸 찾는 업체가 없다), 파이썬은 나름 대박.

파이썬으로 온갖 것 다 해보다 최근 머신러닝에 손 대기 시작했는데, 내가 수학 못하는 야매 프로그래머라 어렵지 않겠냐는 예상과 달리 무척 재밌다.

사실 인공지능 인기가 어제오늘 얘기도 아니고, 나도 줄곧 관심을 두고 있는 분야라 틈틈이 관련 자료를 찾아보긴 했었으나, 오래전 구글에서 나온 '텐서플로우' 소스를 보고 뭔 내용인지 하나도 이해 못 했던 악몽이…

"십년이면 강산도 변한다"지만 IT 업계는 2~3년 정도라 그 사이 머신러닝도 발전기에서 완숙기로 접어들기 시작한 듯, 이젠 나 정도도 함 비벼볼 수 있을 정도로 정리가 됐구나 느낌.

뭣보다 텐서플로우를 대신할 파이토치(PyTorch)의 성장이 결정적 아닐까 싶다. 내 눈에 텐서플로우는 알지 못할 숫자의 나열이었다면, 파이토치는 파이썬 함수라서 이질감이 없다.

컴퓨터 언어를 밥 짓는 거로 비유하자면 C나 자바 라이브러리는 쌀부터 씻어야 하지만, 파이썬 라이브러리는 이미 만들어 놓은 밥을 전자렌지에 데우기만 하면 완성되는 수준. 다시 말해 머신러닝도 이런 식으로 학습이 가능하게 만들어 놓은 거.

덕분에 텐서, 가중치, 바이어스, 선형회귀, 경사하강법, 시그모이드 함수, 손실 함수 같은 생소한 인공지능 관련 지식도 기본 개념만 알면 되고, 나 같은 복사 & 붙여넣기밖에 할 줄 모르는 개발자라면 굳이 내부 알고리즘까지 알려고 애쓰지 않아도 된다.

구글과 유튜브를 보면서 어느 정도 감을 잡고 나서 정리 좀 하려고 도서관에서 '파이토치 첫걸음'이란 책을 빌렸는데, 와우, 간만에 본 허접쓰레기.

저자는 한국말의 '첫걸음'이 무슨 의미인지를 모르는 것 같다. 처음엔 뱁새 걷기를 알려줘야 하는데, 황새처럼 걷기 내용을 써 놨다. 과연 누가 딱 보고 이해할 수 있을지 의문 가득한 수식의 나열, 그리고 아무 설명도 없이 냅다 써 갈긴 전문 용어.

가령 24쪽 제목이 '확률 모델과 최대 우도 추정'인데 '우도'가 뭔지 내용이 없다. 그나마 나는 사전 학습을 해 놔서 대충 이해하긴 했지만, 책 제목을 '첫걸음'이라 해 놓고 이렇게 써 놓으면 욕먹어도 싸지 않나.

출판연도가 2019년이던데, 파이토치가 서서히 인기를 얻던 초기에 돈벌이 목적으로 최대한 빨리 번역 출판한, 무성의한 종이 쪼가리로밖에 생각할 수가 없는.

Nach der Zigarren Doku "Von der Saat bis zur Zigarre" ist "Wie kreiere ich eine Zigarre?" die zweite Dokumentation aus dieser StarkeZigarren-Serie. Dieses Mal verschlägt es uns nach Indonesien, wo uns ein lokales Kamerateam bei der Kreation einer Zigarre begleitet.

Gedreht wird in der Region Jember im Osten Javas, wo seit etwa 500 Jahren Handel mit Tabak betrieben und seit weit über 100 Jahren Tabak angebaut wird. Indonesien hat eine lange Tabak- und Zigarrentradition, die eng mit Europa, vor allem mit den Niederlanden und Deutschland verbunden ist.

Seit dem Jahr 2020 boomt der heimische Zigarrenmarkt. Dies war ein wichtiger Grund für StarkeZigarren, Jakarta, Bali und Surabaya zu besuchen, um den Heimatmarkt mit seinen Akteuren kennenzulernen. In Jember haben wir schließlich die Besuki Raya Zigarrenmanufaktur besucht, um Mata Hari Zigarren herzustellen. Diese wurden im Mai 2024 erfolgreich in Deutschland eingeführt.

Professor Shay, den diese Sache für seine Arbeit am Historischen Forschungsinstitut interessiert, hatte bislang auch kein Glück. Immer mehr Personen tauchen auf und machen sich verdächtig. Auch Java-Jim, ein undurchsichtiger Seemann, versucht den drei ??? zuvorzukommen. Und welche Rolle spielt Stebins, der wegen Unterschlagung im Gefängnis war und auf Bewährung frei ist? Der Professor vermutet, daß er und Java-Jim zusammenarbeiten. Aber am Ende sind die drei ??? allen eine Nasenlänge voraus: die vielen rätselhaften Hinweise führen sie zum Phantomsee und damit endlich zur Lösung.
