By 1965, the PKI had three million party members – adding a million members in the year. It had emerged as a serious political force in Indonesia, despite the anti-communist military’s attempts to squelch its growth. Membership in its mass organizations went up to 18 million. A strange incident – the killing of three generals in Jakarta – set off a massive campaign, helped along by the CIA and Australian intelligence, to excise the communists from Indonesia. Mass murder was the order of the day. The worst killings were in East Java and in Bali. Colonel Sarwo Edhie’s forces, for instance, trained militia squads to kill communists. ‘We gave them two or three days’ training,’ Sarwo Edhie told journalist John Hughes, ‘then sent them out to kill the communists.’ In East Java, one eyewitness recounted, the prisoners were forced to dig a grave, then ‘one by one, they were beaten with bamboo clubs, their throats slit, and they were pushed into the mass grave’. By the end of the massacre, a million Indonesian men and women of the left were sent to these graves. Many millions more were isolated, without work and friends. Aidit was arrested by Colonel Yasir Hadibroto, brought to Boyolali (in Central Java) and executed. He was 42. There was no way for the world communist movement to protect their Indonesian comrades. The USSR’s reaction was tepid. The Chinese called it a ‘heinous and diabolical’ crime. But neither the USSR nor China could do anything. The United Nations stayed silent. The PKI had decided to take a path that was without the guns. Its cadre could not defend themselves. They were not able to fight the military and the anti-communist gangs. It was a bloodbath.
Red Star Over the Third World Vijay Prashad, November 2017
The fourth way that anticommunist extermination programs shaped the world is that they deformed the world socialist movement. Many of the global left-wing groups that did survive the twentieth century decided that they had to employ violence and jealously guard power or face annihilation. When they saw the mass murders taking place in these countries, it changed them. Maybe US citizens weren’t paying close attention to what happened in Guatemala, or Indonesia. But other leftists around the world definitely were watching. When the world’s largest Communist Party without an army or dictatorial control of a country was massacred, one by one, with no consequences for the murderers, many people around the world drew lessons from this, with serious consequences. This was another very difficult question I had to ask my interview subjects, especially the leftists from Southeast Asia and Latin America. When we would get to discussing the old debates between peaceful and armed revolution; between hardline Marxism and democratic socialism, I would ask: “Who was right?” In Guatemala, was it Árbenz or Che who had the right approach? Or in Indonesia, when Mao warned Aidit that the PKI should arm themselves, and they did not? In Chile, was it the young revolutionaries in the MIR who were right in those college debates, or the more disciplined, moderate Chilean Communist Party? Most of the people I spoke with who were politically involved back then believed fervently in a nonviolent approach, in gradual, peaceful, democratic change. They often had no love for the systems set up by people like Mao. But they knew that their side had lost the debate, because so many of their friends were dead. They often admitted, without hesitation or pleasure, that the hardliners had been right. Aidit’s unarmed party didn’t survive. Allende’s democratic socialism was not allowed, regardless of the détente between the Soviets and Washington. Looking at it this way, the major losers of the twentieth century were those who believed too sincerely in the existence a liberal international order, those who trusted too much in democracy, or too much in what the United States said it supported, rather than what it really supported—what the rich countries said, rather than what they did. That group was annihilated.

USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a three-masted wooden-hulled heavy frigate of the United States Navy. She is the world's oldest ship still afloat.[Note 1] She was launched in 1797, one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. The name "Constitution" was among ten names submitted to President George Washington by Secretary of War Timothy Pickering in March of 1795 for the frigates that were to be constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so Constitution and her sister ships were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. She was built at Edmund Hartt's shipyard in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. Her first duties were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France and to defeat the Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War.
Constitution is most noted for her actions during the War of 1812 against the United Kingdom, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five smaller British warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant. The battle with Guerriere earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides" and public adoration that has repeatedly saved her from scrapping. She continued to serve as flagship in the Mediterranean and African squadrons, and she circled the world in the 1840s. During the American Civil War, she served as a training ship for the United States Naval Academy. She carried American artwork and industrial displays to the Paris Exposition of 1878.
Constitution was retired from active service in 1881 and served as a receiving ship until being designated a museum ship in 1907. In 1934, she completed a three-year, 90-port tour of the nation. She sailed under her own power for her 200th birthday in 1997, and again in August 2012 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory over Guerriere.
Constitution's stated mission today is to promote understanding of the Navy's role in war and peace through educational outreach, historical demonstration, and active participation in public events as part of the Naval History & Heritage Command. As she is a fully commissioned Navy ship, her crew of 75 officers and sailors participate in ceremonies, educational programs, and special events while keeping her open to visitors year round and providing free tours. The officers and crew are all active-duty Navy personnel, and the assignment is considered to be special duty. She is usually berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard at one end of Boston's Freedom Trail.

WildEyes ™ AI: Helping to Protect Wild Rhinos from Poachers and Track Species Recovery
On World Rhino Day 2020, RESOLVE and CVEDIA announce a novel solution to protect the world’s endangered rhinoceros species from extinction in the wild and to better monitor their recovery efforts. This new low-cost technology allows real-time detection of rhinos and illegal intruders, and transmits images as alerts to protection forces to prevent the slaughter of defenseless rhinos. Using new advances in artificial intelligence technology, RESOLVE’s tiny camera system, called WildEyes™ AI, works remotely, hidden from the poacher’s gaze. When the camera’s motion sensor is triggered, it uses computer vision to detect rhinos or humans in the frame and transmits those images in near-real time to the smartphones of rangers, park directors at Headquarters, and other designated parties to afford greater transparency in reporting. Placed strategically along suspected poacher trails, the cameras send alerts to command posts, which can trigger a rapid response by park authorities to protect these rare animals and arrest poachers trying to set snares or shoot rhinos. A major challenge to protection efforts is that several of the rhino species are territorial and sparsely distributed over large areas, and thus harder to patrol effectively. Many of these parks are underfunded and struggle to keep ranger staff paid and properly equipped, and the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated these difficulties. What is needed now is new technology to serve as a “force multiplier”, where a staff of 150 rangers can be as effective as 1,500 by responding within minutes to near-real time alerts of entry by poachers and to stop the poachers before they kill.
This new technology cannot come soon enough. Although international rhino horn trade has been banned under CITES since 1977, rhinos in Africa and Asia continue to be persecuted for their horns, which are reported to be valued at $65,000 per kilogram in illicit Asian markets. Many populations of the five species have suffered precipitous declines due to relentless poaching in the past few decades. Combined across all species, perhaps no more than 30,000 wild rhinos are alive today. The last wild northern white rhinos were hunted to extinction in 2018 and the Sumatran rhino has disappeared from the island of Borneo and is now restricted to three small populations in Sumatra. The Javan rhino may be the rarest large mammal on Earth, limited to a single park in western Java and numbering under 75 individuals. Less than 3,700 greater one-horned rhinos and only about 5,000 black rhinoceros remain in the wild. Only the southern white rhino occurs in numbers estimated at 22,000 individuals across about 467 populations.
How it Works: The sophisticated AI algorithm detects both humans and rhinos. The detector is based on synthetic data models created by CVEDIA, running on the Intel Movidius vision processing unit (VPU) embedded in the WildEyes AI camera. The camera remains asleep until the motion sensor is triggered and then, leveraging the AI algorithm, the Intel VPU filters out false triggers. The images can be sent from the camera to either the cell network or via a radio link in areas lacking cell coverage, to the Internet, and back to park HQ in about 2 minutes. By filtering “on the edge” (i.e., only transmitting true positives of rhinos or humans), the camera conserves vital battery life. Due to the VPU’s low power requirements, WildEyes AI can run for more than 1.5 years on a single charge of its small rechargeable Lithium Ion battery—a game changer for a field-based sensor.
“This wildlife camera system can detect rhinos and those who seek to do them harm. With the tremendous partnership and support of Intel and CVEDIA engineers, we can contribute to reducing one of the world’s most pressing wildlife management problems—to stop the poaching of rhinos to extinction,” said Steve Gulick, inventor of TrailGuard AI and its offshoot, WildEyes AI and Chief Technology Officer of WildTech@RESOLVE.
Enhancing Monitoring of Rhinos: WildEyes AI, running the Rhino Detector, has another important application: monitoring rhino recovery. Current monitoring approaches for endangered large mammals rely on radio-telemetry, field observations, and aerial surveys, but are resource intensive; their limitations are much more pronounced in dense forested or grassland environments where the three Asian species reside. Among the five rhino species, only the body shape of the Greater one-horned rhinoceros allows it to be fitted with a traditional radio collar. For the black rhino and white rhino of Africa, transmitters have to be placed in the horn, but these are short-lived. More effective is to place WildEyes AI cameras running the rhino detector at water holes where the African species congregate, or at forest wallows where the Asian species meet and cool off. To retrieve and process data from the field creates a lag time between event and detection, ranging from weeks to months. A network of cameras running the CVEDIA rhino detector strategically positioned within rhino home ranges can autonomously detect rhinos 24/7 with high accuracy and near real-time notification capabilities, an affordable alternative to traditional surveys or to support existing monitoring efforts. For very small populations, such as for the Sumatran and Javan rhinos that live in dense tropical forests, photo-ID would greatly advance protection and population estimation.
“I wish there had been a technology like WildEyes AI when I was conducting a photographic-based census of rhinos in Chitwan National Park in Nepal in the late 1980s. Rhinos are easy to tell apart compared to most large mammals: a combination of horn size and shape, cuts to the ears and other scars, and extra skin folds distinguish rhinos as individuals. Soon, we will also be able to run Re-Identification algorithms to determine if a specific rhino has been previously detected by the camera’s software. This will be a revolution in monitoring these endangered species,” said rhino biologist Dr. Eric Dinerstein, co-inventor of TrailGuard AI and WildEyes AI, Director of the project at RESOLVE, and author of The return of the unicorns: the natural history and conservation of the greater one-horned rhinoceros and the chapter on rhinoceroses in the Lynx Encyclopedia Handbook of the Mammals of the World.
“By combining our advanced human detector with the new rhino detector, we can have a big impact on protecting endangered rhinos. Using our unique approach to creating AI algorithms trained on synthetic data, in under three weeks, we were able to create a detection algorithm with high accuracy that processes using very low power inside the camera itself. Our Rhino Detector is trained on all five species of rhino so it is agnostic to the species. Because range overlap is rare, or non-existent in most parks, classifying rhinos by species is not of concern in this use case. We’re excited about our partnership with RESOLVE and are just getting started: detectors for other high-value wildlife species such as elephants, tigers, snow leopards, wolves, and bears, have already been developed and soon we will create regional detectors and classifiers for multiple species to run on the edge,” Arjan Wijnveen, CEO of CVEDIA.
Release of the WildEyes AI cameras running the CVEDIA rhino+human detector will begin in November 2020. This work was supported by grants from the Shared Earth Foundation, the Stadler Family Foundation, the Weeden Family Foundation, and One Earth Philanthropy.

-1954: nace Denzel Washington, actor estadounidense. Reconocido por su actuación en películas como Training Day, Man on Fire, Inside Man, American Gangster.
-1959: nace Ana Torroja, cantante española del grupo Mecano.
-1978: nace John Legend, músico y productor estadounidense.
-1981: nace Sienna Miller, actriz estadounidense.

Opening a New Café During COVID-19: United States
Three U.S. cafés talk about the risks and rewards of opening during a pandemic.

Now six months into a global health crisis, it’s clear that COVID-19 will be with us for the foreseeable future. Instead of us putting life on pause for a few months, COVID-19 has just become part of our new normal. While it might still seem like a risky time to open a café—especially with so many established ones temporarily or permanently closed, massive unemployment, and of course health and safety concerns—these three U.S. cafés opened in or around March of 2020, when many states were mandating stay-at-home measures. Today we take a look at Drip Coffee Makers in New York, JoJo’s Java in Tigard, Ore., and Union Coffee in Seattle, and learn about the challenges and rewards of opening in a pandemic.
Drip Coffee Makers started as a coffee push cart outside the Brooklyn Museum. Drip’s brick-and-mortar location has been open since early this year. Photo by Nigel Price.
Nigel Price, founder of Drip Coffee Makers, left the financial world around the mortgage crisis of 2008, about the same time he was exposed to specialty coffee. “After more than a decade in finance I realized I needed to focus more on my mental, spiritual, and physical health, not just my savings account,” Nigel says.
He started out with a coffee push cart outside of the Brooklyn Museum and Botanical Garden. The success of the cart led to a brick-and-mortar café in the Bushwick/Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York on January 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. When the COVID-19 pandemic called for stay-at-home measures in New York, Price was admittedly unsure about the café’s future. “I didn’t expect Drip to survive COVID, so my only intention was to be whatever my neighbors needed me to be. And what I received in return was all of the love I put out as they’ve all reciprocated by supporting my business, and we’ve never had to close or even reduce hours,” he says.
Until recently, Drip has been a one-man operation, but Nigel has been able to hire on additional help. He says that “[identifying] what your customers’ needs are and meet[ing] them where they are” has made all the difference. Drip’s retail coffee and brewing equipment have been big sellers, and those who order to-go are “so happy to have a temporary respite from the home/office, even if only for five minutes.”
JoJo’s Java in Tigard, Ore., opened the first week of March. Photo by @portlandcoffeeshops.
In Tigard, Ore., JoJo’s Java opened the first week of March, and manager Hope Hines credits their ability to stay open to their community of customers and supportive neighboring cafés. “The community is what’s going to help us stay alive. That’s always the factor. We can’t do it without our community,” she says.
Being such a new café, closing temporarily wasn’t financially feasible for JoJo’s at the beginning of the pandemic. Hope runs the café with only her partner, Jamie Kay Christianson, and is careful to follow all state guidelines, including meticulous sanitizing, face masks for themselves and customers, and indicating proper social distancing at the café with tape. JoJo’s also has a garage door opening, which encourages customer flow throughout the café.
Hope’s networks with other coffee shops in Oregon and Vancouver, Wash., have been an important part of how she stays informed during COVID-19. Adjusting to a pandemic felt less overwhelming as Hope realized so many others were in the same boat. “It was really hard at first, and then everyone started trying to figure it out, and we’re still trying to. Being able to have that conversation of ‘How are you doing it?’”
Hope’s advice for any fledgling coffee business during COVID-19 is, “Don’t be afraid. There are amazing communities out there that definitely want to support people who are business owners. I’m a woman, I’m Pureto Rican, and I have a lot of people who want to support me just because of that, which is amazing. … Just try … COVID’s probably always going to be here, we just need to find that new normal.”
Geetu Vailoor wasn’t planning on taking ownership of a café during COVID-19, but that’s just what happened. “I’m going to take this opportunity even though it’s super risky,” she says. Photo by Mark Van Streefkerk.
Union Coffee owner Geetu Vailoor certainly wasn’t planning on taking over a café at the beginning of a pandemic, but that’s just what happened. Geetu, formerly the coffee educator and wholesale manager at Boon Boona Coffee, was approached by Union Coffee owner Zack Reinig in February with an offer. “He told me, ‘I wanna step away from my café. Would you wanna do this?’” Geetu explains. At the time, she was in the midst of several personal and professional transitions, and the thought of taking over a café felt like too much. The more Geetu sat with the thought, however, the more it seemed like the right thing to do.
“As time went by, I realized there was not really a workplace environment that would really suit me. It dawned on me: ‘I’m going to take this opportunity even though it’s super risky. I’ve never run a business before … I never expected to be a café owner, but I also realized that there’s not really a lot of spaces for a queer woman of color to really succeed and make more than minimum wage for a lot of labor, or make a space that feels safe.”
In a turnkey operation, Geetu assumed ownership of Union on March 19, right as Washington’s stay-at-home mandate went into effect. Around that time, she “struggled a lot with not wanting to encourage people to leave their homes during COVID, but realize[d] I needed to make income … I just felt like, I’m gonna be sitting at home anyways, I might as well sit at the café and see if people walk in.”
Since those early days, Geetu gradually added a few more baristas, and invited Juice Club, a natural wine bottle shop, to share the space. With the help of Oatly, Geetu was able to host antiracism training for the team. Even if the move was risky, taking over a formerly white-owned café in the middle of COVID-19 was a chance to create more of the inclusive coffee community Geetu wanted to see.
