During the Sunshot Campaign one night Jiang Cheng breaks down in the security of the camps in Qinghe. Not in front of his sister - in front of Nie Huaisang. It was just supposed to be a harmless get-together, just some drinks.
But the last battle didn't go well. Jiang Cheng survived, too many others died. And it's just too much. He cries. He failed them. He failed a lot of people. He doesn't know what he's doing. People die because he couldn't protect them. He wants his mother back. He wants his father back. He wants Wei Wuxian back. He's alone. He can't do this anymore. He's a failure. He cries, ugly cries. A lot. And Nie Huaisang does't really know how to deal with it, so he's just kinda awkwardly there.
They never talk about it, never mention it again. But their relationship slightly changed.

MY MASSIVE SCHOOL ART PROJECT IVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR LIKE SIX WEEKS!!!!!
The brief was a linoprint design with the prompt of "Hometown" :D
Translations under the cut:
HOME TOWN
Drawing of a two-headed dog: I took a lot of inspiration from shows and podcasts like Gravity Falls and Canp Here And There, where surrealism and strange happenings are the norm
Drawing of an Irish Elk: *I scribbled it out bc it contained information about where I live specifically, which I don't want online for obvious reasons*
Acrylic painting of an ice cream cone: I like the warm and cool shadows and how the left side is facing the light while the right is in shadow
PRIMARY SOURCES
*under the left drawing of lichen* Dry
*under the right drawing of lichen* Fresh
RAVENS AND CROWS
*top left* Ravens tend to be bigger than crows, and a lot fluffier. Jackdaws look very similar to crows, but while ravens & crows have dark eyes, jackdaws have very light eyes
*bottom left* crow feather ➡️ seagull feather➡️ swan feather➡️
SCOTT CHRISTIAN SAVA
*top right* Scott Christian Sava is traditional artist from New York who mainly uses gouache and watercolour and has amassed a large following from sharing his process on platforms like Tiktok and YouTube. He has said he was heavily influenced by JC Leyendecker, Marvel comics and the Art Noveau movement.
*above the manatee* One thing I really like about his art is the way he uses blotchy shapes to show light and shadow, and how that makes his paintings feel like something out of a storybook.
*in between the manatee and the unicorn* I also like the use of shapes and patterns in the background of his work to frame the subject, almost like a stained glass window.
*above the unicorn* Samples of paintings from his "National Animals" series, and my attempt at painting the national animal of Ireland in this style

i'm cleaning up my desk and found a note that I wrote god-knows-when with a story idea for the Untamed that, if i can recall the thinking behind the scribbles, goes a little like this:
in a tale as old as time, Jin Zixuan gets his awkward/arrogant teenage ass cursed.
the curse?
he can shapeshift into a dog. not always voluntarily.
his mother is pissed and can't find a way to lift it. she is 100% not going to tell JGS because of his whole deal.
Mianmian knows because at some point on a nighthunt going wrong JZX stress-poofed into a pomeranian in front of her.
no one else knows.
anyway, canon events happen.
JYL finding out that her new husband turns into a canine is certainly a surprise twist she did not see coming, but well she's always liked dogs and was sad when JC's dogs had to leave when WWX came to Lotus Pier.
Anyway, JL is born in the normal way, a huge honker of a baby.
Everyone is thrilled.
Everything is normal.
then
rocks fall
Everyone dies.
JC ends up taking his nephew home to Lotus Pier to take care of him as like there is no one else.
Four months later JC picks JL up from his nap one afternoon and screams as the baby turns into a husky puppy in his arms.
JL doesn't understand what the fuss is about. he's a baby and he's hungry. so what if he howls instead of cries?
JC is not as sanguine. Queue a bottle episode where through flashbacks and exposition, it's worked out that while JZX might have been cursed, JL is just... like that.
Great, so now what?
anyway this is my tl'dr as to why Jin Ling and Fairy are actually the same person and this is why Jin Ling is so annoyed when MX!WWX is terrified of Fairy. like, what, this big bad demonic cultivator can't tell that the 140lb doggo with the Jiang-sect clarity bell is more than just some pooch?
Lame, da-jiu. Lame.

My sangcheng headcanon tells me that it’s ouyang zizhen who cries at the most at sangcheng’s wedding. like, jin ling too has tears in his eyes and is this close to start crying but he looks over and sees ouyang zizhen BAWLING and his tears just kind of evaporate
Tumblr media
but it’s okay because it’s all happy laughs and smiles after that and jin ling feels all mushy about having friends who will cry for his uncle

Life is a joke and I am the punchline.
The brainworms compel me so that I must scribble out, even in the notes app, colouring with my bare fingers on my teeny phone screen. They beat me and beat me until I let them be together as a single heart.

I tried to look through your Tumblr to see if you'd answer this but couldn't find it. I wanted to inquire if BFF WWX & NHS are purely fanon? I know they are friendly during the study arc but was it, 'write to me, we can't lose touch' friendly or 'we see each other every day' classmates friendly.
Either way, I do think they would have been friends if the war didn't happen but I think it would have been secret. Mostly because I think Madam Yu and JC wouldn't like him being chummy with his betters.
Also, did he actually manipulate MXY into sacrificing himself or was MXY just tired and saw it as a way out and a middle finger to his tormenters?
Thanks for your thoughts. I hope you are doing well 😊💞
Hi. Thanks for your patience once again.
Sadly, it was the latter. They were buddies for the extent of the study group and after that in the book, they are never mentioned to communicate again till Wei Wuxian returns from the dead, and even then it's pretty clear that it was a more distant relationship. Wei Wuxian knew him well when they were teenagers, but any actual relationship is all in the past. (Much of this likely comes from CQL where they are actual friends and connect several times in scenes that simply do not exist in the book and people then adding it into their novel based stuff)
It is possible that they could have been friends in a non-war world, depending on how much effort Nie Huaisang was able to put into it. As you say, Madam Yu and Jiang Cheng probably would have not been all that open to the idea, no matter what sort of connection it is, as Jiang Cheng easily gets jealous of anyone who can pull Wei Wuxian's attention from Lotus Pier and Madam Yu is Madam Yu. But Wei Wuxian does require some input from the other side too. As funny as it may be to joke about him doing all the work to make friends, the truth of things is that he needs reciprocation to keep making those overtures. Even he and Lan Wangji struggle till he starts getting something back. If Nie Huaisang isn't putting forth his own effort, it will still fizzle and die.
So I don't really go in for sad boy Mo Xuanyu theory at all, I think that most of Nie Huaisang's influence in this situation would have been when and who. But what we get out of the mess of scribbled notes and the fact that he memorized this ritual back in Jinlintai before he was sent home is that he was a young man who was deeply embittered by the situation he was in and chose to strike back at his abusers even worse. He may have been sweet, but the fact that he memorized a sacrifice and revenge spell points to him having a dark streak even then.
Nie Huaisang's mastery and manipulations are in part finding those who are angry enough or good enough to do the work for him. He takes a very off hand approach to Jin Guangyao's downfall up until the end, letting others who he may not be able to handle or anticipate (Sisi, Bicao, Wei Wuxian himself as well as Lan Wangji taking a much more active approach in the matter) spin his web tighter till Jin Guangyao is already trapped and doomed. While no doubt Mo Xuanyu sacrificing himself to bring Wei Wuxian back into the game is a part of his plan, the amount of personal manipulation needed to bring someone who wouldn't already have had those wishes around to his point of view is a lot more than he's put into anyone else involved. It just doesn't fit with my understanding of the characters and schemes that he would do that. After all, their timing was in sync. That suggests a mutual plan to me.

Hi! I wanted to ask you something that’s been bugging me for a while: I want to know who’s the oldest between wx, and, for a long time, I thought it was WWX, since he says that they met when they were 15 and it was spring (then, LWJ was the youngest because his birthday is on January) but I remembered that MXTX uses the chinese age with Jin Ling (the text says JL is 15, but he should be 13 chronologically) so I don’t know if it was used with wx too. I think the characters for occidental/oriental age are different but I know -10 of chinese🤔who do you think is the oldest? The thought of them actually meeting at 13-14 is funny, though xD
Hi Anon,
Well, I'd have to say LWJ is older than WWX, because WWX has called him 'WangJi-xiong' in the past, as well as 'Lan Er-Ge' and 'Lan Er-Gege' which are all used to address someone older than you. Unfortunately I don't speak or read much Chinese at all. But as far as I'm aware; Both Xiong and Ge/Gege mean 'older brother' - the latter is just less formal, more cute/flirty way of doing so.
I'm not sure if MXTX gave LWJ a birth date - I've only ever seen her attribute one to WWX in an interview 🤔
So I would have to assume LWJ is older, because of the honorifics WWX uses for him ☺️
I think if you do the math (which isn't my strong point mind! 🤣), WX are definitely 15/16 when they meet. WWX had been guarding his first kiss for 20 years, and that was 5 years after they first met. Also, they both have courtesy names. MXTX said she lowered this from the usual age of 20 to 15 to fit in with the story.
.
As for JL... * Scribbles down numbers like a mad scientist - akin to what I imagine WWX was like while inventing things in the Demon-Slaughtering Cave... *
At the start of the novel JC confirms JL is going to turn 15 that year - so he's a little younger. Since he said "15 this year" he might have only just turned 14 as well. So I think this adds up nearly, give or take a few months? The first siege at the Burial Mounds was "nearly three months later" after the Bloodbath of Nightless City. Since JL was just over a month old when JYL died, he'd be around 4 months at the time of WWXs demise. With us not knowing exactly when WWXs was reborn within the thirteenth year since his death - this could add up to the extra months, rounding everything off nicely to coincide with JL being 14 at the start of the novel.
You are right, the traditional Chinese method of counting a person's age is a little different. You're 1 at birth instead of being 0. It gets a little complicated after that, because they then add another year onto that age once the child reaches their first Luna New Year as well. So depending on what month you are born, you could be classed as 2 pretty early on! Even though you would be technically perhaps less than 1 by modern calculations. After your first Luna Year, your age is then calculated by the turn of each new Luna Year. So it will be a year in between thereafter, if that makes sense. But as far as I'm aware, MXTX did not use this method when giving her characters their ages. I think this might stem from people being a bit confused with JLs ages - but hopefully the above helps to clear this up a little.
Just to further support my musings! If MXTX had used the traditional Chinese method for everyone's age, A-Yuan would have been too young to act the way he did when the novel states he was "one or two" years old. Because he was able to walk, talk and play very competently - making me assume he was definitely older than if his age was being calculated the traditional way.
As for WX meeting when they are a little older, I'm rather glad to be honest! Especially considering some of the sexual tension and flirtatious behaviour at times over their youth 😂
Anyway! I hope I managed to answer your question Anon 🤗

JC’s Roommate (Chapter 1/?)
Ava had been hanging out a lot in JC’s dorm room. Because of his roommate. Beatrice.
(Written in Ava's first person POV) ao3 link
Chapter 1: there she goes (there she goes again)
It’s Wednesday. I was in the chemistry lab with JC. We had been working side by side for the past few weeks. That day, we were mixing different solutions and watching what would happen. It’s kind of fun, actually.
I carefully measured out the indicated solution and handed it to JC. “So what do you think will happen if we add this one?”
He took the beaker from me. “Well, according to the instructions, it should turn blue and produce some bubbles,” JC replied. As he spoke, I caught a subtle accent in his pronunciation—was it German? Or perhaps something similar, like Dutch or Swiss?
“Let’s try it then,” I said eagerly. We were really getting into this experiment.
JC poured the solution into our reaction vessel. Just as predicted, the liquid changed color and began fizzing up. “Wow, that’s pretty cool,” he observed.
“Yeah, it is,” I agreed, fascinated by the reaction taking place before our eyes. We scribbled down our observations in our lab books.
After a moment, JC looked up at me with a grin. “You know, you’re really good at this.”
I felt myself flush slightly at the compliment. “Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself.”
“Thanks.” JC’s smile remained warm and friendly. “Hey, Ava. I was thinking, maybe we could continue working on this project in my dorm room this weekend?”
“Your dorm room?” I asked in surprise. We usually did our lab work here in the chemistry lab.
JC nodded. “Yeah, why not? It’s more comfortable than here, and we can eat some pizza or something.”
I hesitated for a second. I mean, I’d never actually been in a guy’s room before. But this was JC we’re talking about. Tall, handsome JC. Always such a gentleman. Plus he’d been nothing but nice since we started lab together.
With that jawline and those broad shoulders, it’s not like I exactly minded hanging out with him more. And hey, who could blame me if I had thought about the possibility of us being more than lab partners? Maybe this was his way of showing me he liked me too. So what the hell, right?
“Sure,” I finally replied, unable to hide the slight smile that tugged at the corners of my lips. “That sounds like a good idea.”
“Cool!” he replied cheerfully. Just then the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Our professor began saying something about packing up our supplies and making sure our lab stations were clean before leaving.
As we began packing up our supplies, JC added, “And oh, I have a roommate. But I’m sure Beatrice won’t mind the company.”
“Beatrice? Your roommate has…a girl’s name?”
I must have looked surprised, because JC laughed. “Yeah, Beatrice is her name.” We’ve been roommates since last year.”
