”For a moment she contemplated simply reheating the leftovers from the freezer. The sauce’s tart sweetness would only have deteriorated a little, and her guest would probably never know the difference. Bah— She was thinking like one of the stupid assistants, for whom the subtle arts of the kitchen were merely a job, a living, a way to impress their friends. What did her audience matter, dignitary or destitute? She cooked for herself and she had never cooked less than her best... . [She set to work about the kitchen.] . . And while she worked the small nuisances of the day faded and her mind focused wholly on the marvel of creation. There was such balance in food. Sweetness and sharpness, blood and oil, the delicate influence of ingredients and the controlling power of flame... If only men and women could be so simple, so malleable! ’Give me a well-stocked kitchen & i could rule the world,” she whispered to herself, and wished for all her heart that it was true.” - L’Alchimista, pp 60 ✒️: N.K. Both essays and short stories have driven my #TBR. An I've enjoyed them so much more than I imagined. Writing is definitely a skill and shorts is a great way to hone it. I learned so much about writing tucked away in #Essays by #OctaviaButler in Bloodchild and #ToniMorrison in The Source of Self-Regard. I honestly don't have a favorite. I devoured them all with the exception of #jcaliforniacooper’s The Matter Is Life. I just finished reading her epic novel, In Search of Satisfaction. It was masterpiece worthy in my opinion, so I can't wait to delve into her short stories. But this quote... This one I've featured is in #nkjemisin’s How Long Til Black Future Month? Pictured on top of the #bookpile. I love this quote because the woman is so imperfect. Arrogant. Controlling. Passionate. Possessed. She alive. & I love when an author makes their characters LIVE. There are many quotes & notes coming from #edwidgedanticat, Octavia Butler, & J. California Cooper. (at Atlanta, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9mXIqqAE71/?igshid=gm7ht6m8m43r

"a sunrise or sunset was wasted on Mrs. Befoe. There were beautiful mountains, as mountains are always beautiful, off in the distance - purplish gray with the sunlight catching glints of the green trees growing richly on the smooth, graceful shapes." - "In Search of Satisfaction" by J. California Cooper Last week I devoured this rich and hearty southern narrative which comfortably exists in my #library mind alongside classics such as "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and "Sula" but it definitely has its own very unique flavor. This time traveling epic story features a long list of rich and complicated characters all living in a fictional small Southern town called Yoville, Black, white and Indian folks, each one of them connected by blood, marriage and circumstance but mainly through that basic human need and genuine search for love, pleasure, joy, affirmation, and peace.
