Wow I don’t think I’ve ever seen this. #beautiful. #repost @mojoportfolio ・・・ In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. #mlkday2020 “Let a new earth rise. Let another world be born. Let a bloody peace be written in the sky. Let a second generation full of courage issue forth; let a people loving freedom come to growth. Let a beauty full of healing and a strength of final clenching be the pulsing in our spirit and our blood. Let the martial songs be written, let the dirges disappear. Let a race of men now rise and take control.” - Margaret Walker Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) A Second Generation, 1992 color lithograph from the suite of six color lithographs based on the 1937 poem For My People by Margaret Walker (1915-1998). #elizabethcatlett, #socialjustice #africanamericanartist, #blackwomanartist,#africanamericanart, #collectprints, #civilrightsmarch, #margaretwalker, @mojoportfolio https://www.instagram.com/p/B7h9wvABa8T/?igshid=a144pt6tduci

Are we a weaker generation?
Are we a weaker generation?
I was in a very reflective mood recently. Thinking back to former times and remembering just how weighted down I once felt. I often felt like a slave to my emotions, as if I had no say and no authority to govern them. Anxiety was my master, while depression was a cruel and merciless overseer. But some might say being depressed is a luxury that all can’t afford. But is that really true?
It’s also…

the struggle staggers us
Our birth and death are easy hours, like sleep
and food and drink. The struggle staggers us
for bread, for pride, for simple dignity.
And this is more than fighting to exist;
more than revolt and war and human odds.
There is a journey from the me to you.
There is a journey from the you to me.
A union of the two strange worlds must be.
Ours is a struggle from a too-warm bed;
too cluttered with a patience full of sleep.
Out of this blackness we must struggle forth;
from want of bread, of pride, of dignity.
Struggle between the morning and the night.
This marks our years; this settles, too, our plight.

❤✊🏽🎨 #ArtIsAWeapon #Artist #activist #educator #MargaretTaylorBurroughs, founder of Chicago's @dusablemuseum, is featured in @broadly. #Painting by @laurafreemanart. https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/bj5yz4/margaret-taylor-burroughs-chicago-art-1940s From @broadly: "In the 1940s, Margaret Taylor Burroughs bolstered the careers of some of Chicago's most iconic artists by holding culture salons in her barn and later starting an African American museum in her home. The guests sat on the floor, sipping martinis or coffee and pondering society’s great problems until the wee hours of the morning, sometimes the next afternoon. Paint and artist tools lay strewn across the floor. #GwendolynBrooks, a decade before winning a #PulitzerPrize, would hang around, laughing and sharing secrets. At times, soon-to-be civil rights icon #PaulRobeson or celebrated #sculptor #ElizabethCatlett would swing by. The renowned #painter #EldzierCortor could sometimes be found there as well, alongside luminary poets like #MargaretWalker and #LangstonHughes. This was the scene throughout the 1940s at Burroughs’ old home in Bronzeville on the South Side of Chicago, as described in essays by Brooks and documented by various photographers. These cultural salons helped incubate the creative practices of current day artistic icons, and are one of the reasons that Bronzeville is now known as the birthplace of the Chicago Black Renaissance. And if Bronzeville was the birthplace of that cultural reawakening, then Burroughs—an artist, poet, and educator who eventually founded Chicago’s DuSable Museum of African American History—is one of the godmothers."
