Parker and Adam dinner at 6 10 – Marian came to me to tell me she had seen Mrs. Holmes this morning who mentioned Godley to her – her husband would not interfere against me – thought I ought to have it – in short behaved very handsomely – said I ought not to give more than £1800 or £2000 for it – Marian staid with me till 8 ¼ - then writing out copies of letters into business letter book till went into the other room at 9 40 and sat talking to my aunt and looked over the courier till came to my room at 10 50 very fine mild day – F51 ½° now at 11 p.m.

Physical Appearance —

Jeremiah tends to be well dressed all the time. When he is working he is always dressed professional and is in a suit, he prepares himself well for his days when he is in the firm and when he is in Court. He takes pride in how he dresses but isn’t really a huge fan of it. Which is why he tends to be himself when he is working the farm in jeans and a simple shirt. His movenments are delivered with full confidence and no second guessing is ever done. He never gives too much of himself to anyone else and just reacts to them. Mostly he does his best just to irk other people, pushing buttons is a hobby of his. He can be diplomatic if he has to be but tends to avoid that most of the time. He says what he means all the time unless there is something else that is more valeuable.

Biography —

Even angels have their demons that had been what Jeremiah’s mother had always told him. It was a justification for their father’s cold nature – something to make Jeremiah not hate him. All the daddy issues managed to fall onto his older brother and younger sister. Jeremiah never really cared for the man. All he knew was that he had a duty to be there for his parents. To provide for them because their father lacked in that department. Jeremiah grew up with the idea that he had a father but never really saw that being played out. His father would come and go on trips that were supposedly important. Their father was obsessed with raising their social standards – to right the wrong that had once occurred to their family decades ago when the ruling family had been the Ainsworth in town till his father’s older brother was murdered by the current family in place. Jeremiah’s siblings always felt like they had been robbed of their lives – Jeremiah didn’t mind being dirt poor. He enjoyed working the land and being able to read instead of attending governmental meetings with idiots that thought they knew what they were doing. His father had always hoped that Jeremiah and his brother would take back the family’s rightful place but realized with time that Jeremiah didn’t care nor have the passion for it.

In the start, Jeremiah and his siblings were close as thieves. They worked the farm together during the day and would go out at night to run the town. Jeremiah looked up to his brother – he wanted to be just like him when he was younger. Those were the simpler times. His sister coming along was the best thing to ever happen to the family. She brought the grace and delicate element that the Ainsworth family lacked. Then things started to change when they entered their teenage years. Where Jeremiah proved that he had no intention of turning the town that he had grown up upside down just to create a power change. His brother, on the other hand, had a different plan. Jeremiah had thought that perhaps with time his brother would see reason and join him with just letting go of this family feud when he went off to law school. His sister was under his wing and he always took care of her. Jeremiah always provided safety for his family in ways that didn’t require another war.

He should’ve known that he was going to fail when he started to fall in love with Isabella, the daughter of his father’s enemy. The two had hated each other – they had been taught to hate each other. Then just like that, they started to both realize neither of them really disliked each other. The two would constantly bicker and neither thought it would become nothing more than a friendship – but the more time they spent the more they realized they bother shared the same dreams. Dreams of getting out of town and traveling the world. Getting the chance to see everything and help those that needed the help. Isabella wanted to be a teacher and Jeremiah had wanted to just farm a land and be able to feel the poor without the skyrocket taxes. Isabella’s father had nothing against Jeremiah, instead saw him as a wild card that he could use against his arch enemy, Jeremiah’s father. Jeremiah wasn’t an idiot he knew the political plays that would come out if he did go public with Isabella, so he denied her this. Instead, he publically broke up with her in front of the entire town. That was the first time that he was able to see a preview of how cruel he could be.

For years both of them kept their friendship hidden from everywhere. The woman told Jeremiah she couldn’t be in a secret relationship. Though both knew they couldn’t be together it didn’t stop the feelings from being there. Jeremiah was devoted to Isabella completely – even when other females tried they never came close to her. Isabella ended up putting her dream of being a teacher on hold and stayed in town for Jeremiah. Jeremiah started to push the political ladder as a local politican – his community started to stand behind him. The Ainsworth farm became successful and his relationship with his parents – including his father – improved. His sister was in love and was going to marry above as well. The Ainsworth family started to have a meaning once again and it was not some pitiful family or a reminder of what they had once been. His older brother ended up coming back in town and enjoyed the changes. He was proud that Jeremiah had seen the light and was devoted to moving up the social ladder. What he didn’t know – what no one knew – was that Jeremiah was doing this with the sole purpose to marry Isabella. The change was slow though – too slow for their older brother and what Jeremiah didn’t know was that his brother had died.

The man that had come back was a vampire. The supernatural was not something that Jeremiah had ever wanted to join. Even when his brother stood in front of him and demonstrated him all his new abilities and the new concept of living forever, didn’t interest him. Jeremiah refused his brother’s offer and told him that he was not his brother anymore. The man took him off his life. Jeremiah then proceeded to propose to Isabella and planning a life away from this entire town and its madness. Oh if only it would’ve ended there because what happened next ended up changing the man that Jeremiah became. His brother took their younger sister and turned her. His older brother could be an amazing manipulative son of a bitch – not to mention that their relationship of siblings had always been twisted. The next memory that Jeremiah had was waking up in a blood pool of his parents. His first visage composed of siblings standing tall in front of him as he pushed himself up the ground holding Isabella. They had managed to find the letters that the two had written to each other.

Jeremiah ended up getting his nightmare served to him – he didn’t end up taking over the town. Nor made any political moves. No – Jeremiah ended up becoming his brother’s slave. He was turned and completely sired to his brother from the start. Isabella was kept as a good faith bargaining chip. The three ended up taking over the town and Jeremiah ended up as the victor with everything being his. His sister was fiercely loyal to their brother, even when their brother was abusive towards her. Jeremiah’s learned to resent his siblings making them completely enemies in his eyes. Once his brother realized that the political power was not enough to satisfy his ego, he moved his agenda to a bigger scale and a plan that involved more blood spillage. Through the years the only thing that kept him anchor with who he used to be was Isabella, and his brother knew that. Which was one day why he turned Isabella into a vampire giving Jeremiah the choice to keep her alive meaning that he was going to be selfish because Isabella had always said she never wanted to be a vampire or give her what she wanted and kill her and lose that part of himself forever – Jeremiah picked the latter. He drove a stake through Isabella’s heart, while at the same time losing his morals completely. He knew that the only way to win against his brother was going to be by playing like him. During this time he found time to attend law school since he needed a job to get by with humans.

The vampire became ruthless and more homicidal than ever. He started to mimic his brother’s tendencies and at times even go further. The trio managed to cause havoc and during that time he managed to get his freedom granted via his brother. Jeremiah ran away from his siblings and never looked back. After the betrayals and the lies he never wanted to go back. However, any time he got word that his siblings were getting themselves into deep shit Jeremiah always ended up showing up and helped to keep them safe. During this time he became close friends with Alina and Callista – the only other two that actually ever got Jeremiah to demonstrate any slight of loyalty. Jeremiah no longer is the man he used to be. He is driven by his most selfish desires and takes great pleasure in taking someone’s life away. Salem has managed to provide him everything he has ever wanted. The freedom to do whatever he wants and no ties to anyone. At least he had thought so till he managed to run into Elena who ended up being somewhat of a person he never saw himself caring but ended up becoming friends with her.

There there was Cait – someone that Jeremiah should’ve just killed or enjoyed toying with. After all, she was another vampire that was just a baby. Not to mention the self-loathing managed to drive him insane and yet she got under his skin. Got him to actually open up and think about a relationship, though he kept his relationship close to his heart. Not letting a word out nor ever telling anyone anything. His sister managed to show up one day out of the blue to have a showdown with him. The two exchanged brutal words about the lack of relationship there was. It was disclosed to Jeremiah for the first time that their older brother had abused her but Jeremiah refused to show any sign of weakness so he told her to go to hell. Jeremiah did everything but hand over the keys for her to get lost. But she promised Jeremiah that he would regret his cold nature towards her and that Cait might end up being the one to pay the price. This ended up causing friction between Cait and Jeremiah as he tried to push her away and get her to see that he could have a better life without him. However, things managed to change and he ended up allowing himself to enjoy the bliss with Cait – but knowing that Emilia, her creator was another obstacle that they would have to face.

The price that his sister had predicted came early. Or perhaps Jeremiah was looking for an excuse. There was word that his sister had managed to fall trap into their brother’s games. The vampire hesitated between actually going and aiding his sister and letting her just die. Jeremiah had a good thing in Salem but the thing was that ever since the showdown and the harsh words of his sister he never was able to be okay with how things were handled. So he got up and left town. Taking care of his sister – only it was not as easy as that. His brother had gone back home and taken full reign. Going back home was like the prodigal son returning home, only Jeremiah didn’t get a party in his honor. Instead, he got himself into a contract with the devil himself. The sight of his sister dagger was enough to get Jeremiah to sign himself over to his brother in exchange of his sister’s freedom. Jeremiah was going to honor his contract till his brother betrayed him and killed Jeremiah’s long time red headed friend, that was when Jeremiah did his scheme and killed ½ of his team and ran back to Salem.

Hey, I'm so glad that I found your tumblr, finally someone to talk about Gentleman Jack. Don't mind if I invite myself to rant here lol

First, I'd like to thank you for the gifs and your analysis on the episodes, I love seeing all the details that I dind't notice in my first watching, and I'm planning on rewatch after my midterms

After seeing all the season 1 gifs you posted, I rewatch it before season 2 and I paid a lot more attention to the details, like I missed out on so many things: AW just just smiling every time AL's name is lightly mentioned, or when the Ann(e)s are reunited for the first time and AL just takes a good look at AW while everyone is paying attention to Marian, or the eyebrow thing AW does. I was remembered my favorite funny moments when Jeremiah Rawson says that AL's preferences are too exotic for Halifax, and she's she's literally trying to marry his cousin, and later he says "Why is anyone letting AL get her hands on AW's pocket or on her?" I just laughed, almost as much as "What are you looking at?" at the Ann(e)s first diner. And I just love how AL is talking to her aunt and remembering of an annoying teenage AW and after seeing AW for the first time in so many years, we can see AL's face experession changing, and at the end of the episode she goes like: guess she will be my wife

I've a lot of favorite things about season 1 of GJ, but by far my favorite is how protective AL becomes towards AW, how she goes from I'll marry Ann for her money to I just want her to be healthy and happy. And I find it so sad how the environment AW was raised in was so bad for her, what breaks my heart the most is how she has an anxiety attack thinking that AL doesn't want anything to do with her anymore just because she refused to be intimate with Anne in their first time or when they have that big argument and after days of not seeing AL, she basically says she's going to marry Anne even though she's not sure about it, just because she's afraid of losing her. And it just goes to show how willing AW is to do anything either to please others or because she's afraid of losing the people around her and how she's already used to thinking that people will hate/abandon her if she doesn't give them what they want and I can identify so much with her in that aspect

And did the Ainsworth's plot really happened in real life (if it was mentioned in Anne's diary)? Because the only thing that I keep thinking is that if weren't for AL's influence, AW would be pressured by her family to marry her abuser and live a really miserable life (I love the AL's energy "I must protect Ann at any cost", and just feeds my Sapphic heart: "What are you going to do with him? I don't know yet.", what I wouldn't give to see Anne kick his ass, but her threatening him was just as good

I just really love GJ and the Ann(e)s relationship and how brave they were. But I mainly love it because I identify so much with Ann's personality, just like her, I'm not good at imposing myself on other people or good in any social situations, or how she had to struggle with anxiet and depression at a time when they didn't even understand this deseases. But what makes GJ more special is that, despite the difficults, the Ann(e)s managed to find happiness

By the way , their final scene on the hill lives rent free in my head

I'm already back, I thought it would be betterto split my questions in two, one about S1 and one about S2. I can't believe there's only four more episodes, I don't even know what I'm going to do with my life when it's over I'm loving this season, although it doesn't feel the same way as the S1, but I suppose it's because the Ann(e)s are at a different moment in their relationship, so we will have a different view of them I loved the first episodes where they were in the honeymoon phase, too bad that now there will only be drama I have a question, why can't the Hardcastle kid keep his mouth shut? Considering they put in that Hardcastle family scene, I don't think it was for nothing and William will end up spreading the Ann(e)s make out session somehow And what's going on in that Sowden family subplot, is Thomas going to end up killing everyone and giving it to the pigs? My theory is that he will end up killing his mother and will have some conflict with Mr. Washington. While in S1 it was nice to watch, I think it's already taking up too much time in S2 - just my opinion It was also so nice to see AW's evolution with her being assertive when Mr Ingham asks her to marry him and she says she's happy where she is. But I've been feeling like she's been a little down in the last few episodes, especially in episode 3 where she becomes so silent. When Anne returns at the end of Episode 4, you can see that AW knows something is wrong But what I look forward to most this season is to see Ann and Marian become best friends and start gossiping over afternoon tea I don't know how to feel about Anne cheating on Ann with MarianaI, I just hated it, but I hope Anne will redeem herself. I loved Lydia Leonard's acting and the faces she made, especially as Anne read her wife's letter lol After that scene, I felt that, from the smug smile on Mariana's face, she felt that she hasn't lost Anne and that she still has control over her, that even though she's married to someone else, they will always belong together, but for Anne , served to finally put an end to their relationship As for the "I love you" that Anne said, I feel it serves more as a way of apologizing and making up for Ann than actually showing affection (not that Anne doesn't love her). The two times she said it was before AL leaves to see Mariana and when she comes back and they have that intimate scene where Anne is feeling extremely guilty I don't know what to expect in the next episode, but I will definitely suffer more and for some reason I love it lol

Fine frosty morning Fahrenheit 48º at 7 a.m. – Settling what remained for me to pay Miss W– [Walker], expenses of our journey to and expenses at York – It seems the balance against me is only 5/8 pounds/shillings – Breakfast at 8 20/60 with my father – Told him a good deal of what had passed with Holt last night – 

Off to Lidgate at 8 55/.. – There in 1/2 hour – Miss W– [Walker] detained by Hinscliffe and 1 thing or other for about 1/2 hour – Then sat talking till Mrs. William Priestley called for 1/4 hour – Then about 1 came my father and Marian and on their saying Wilson and his man were in the library passage. I set off home to see what they were about and got home at 1 1/2 –

Miss W[alker] nervous in tears perpetually. I told her my plan of introducing her in York where she might be very comfortable and mentioned Miss Crompton to whom I would more particularly recommend her. She seemed much affected at this. We then got on the subject of my going abroad and not corresponding. Reasoned her into believing me right. 

Then spoke of Mr. Ainsley. She was very nervo[u]s. At last from little to more it came out that if she married him, it would be from duty. I pressed for explanation, and discovered that she felt bound to him by some indiscretion. He had taught her to kiss, but they had never gone so far as she and I had done. He had express pathetic sorrow, but was annoyed at the business with Mr. Fraser, and she did not know whether she should have been happy with Mr. F[raser]. 

On Mr. A[insworth]’s account, my indignation rose against the parson. I reasoned her out of all feeling of duty or obligation towards a man who had taken such base advantage. She said there was now no other obstacle between us, and she should be happier with me. Cliff hill would now separate us. 

I asked if she was sure of this. Yes quite. Well then. I consider half an hour and decide. In half the time, she asked if I would take her and gave me her word, and yes, and hoped I should find her faithful and constant to me. Thus, in a moment I thought not of was I accepted and the matter settled.

I kissed her, and this had hardly passed before Mrs. P[riestley] came. Miss W[alker] just went upstairs and gave me the purse and yes in it before she went down to my fathe[r] and sister who could little dream what had happened. I promised to breakfast with Miss W– [Walker] tomorrow but on my return home determined to sleep at Lidgate tonight –

Met Mr. Parker in returning going about Hinscliffe’s coal lease – Some time with Wilson in the library passage – In about an hour wrote 3 pp pages and ends to M– [Mariana] (having sent off note to Mr. Jeremiah Rawson by Cordingley) to say I was right as to the prices of the coal leases, 

“but it is not my intention at present to be entirely guided by these. For as I told you on Friday, you will find me rather worse to bargain with than you would have done the 1st time you called here on the subject in question – I am, Sir, etc. etc. A Lister” –

A week today since receiving her letter – Scarce knew why I had let remain by me so long unanswered, certainly not from any want of affectionate remembrance –

“I have thought of you much, and often wished you were at my elbow – Had it been possible for you to spend another day or 2 with me here before my having England, I should have been glad on many accounts –

Maise ala ne se pent pas? – If you are to leave Lawton is not Leamington next best? Thank you, Mary, for this so kind wish to see me there – I shall hope to contrive it, as I see no prospect of being able to get off from here before the middle of January – Even then I must be more or less dependent upon my aunt, and circumstances; Yet I hope and think to be off by that time – I have been here almost long enough” –

Then about Eugenie – My aunts and Marian’s suspicion Mrs. Herbert had not really wrote the letter – But I had got over that and said what I had written in substance – Have given Mrs. N– [Norcliffe] no answer, but fear I shall not have much time to spare for Bath – 

“My friend was much pleased with your brother” hope he will be of service to her – She has plenty of faith in him – Was going on admirably well till the afflicting news of the sudden death of her most particular friend – Hope she is beginning to get over it and will be recovering again under Steph’s care –      

 “You always tell me how much better you think Mr. L– [Lawton]. Really he ought to be congratulated on having taken a new lease of life – I am rejoiced at your having ridden a good deal, and only hope to see you looking and being well enough and keep pace with Mr. L– [Lawton]”

It was thro’ inadvertance did not tell her ‘my friend and I only proposed staying 2 or 3 days in York’ and then returning straight home – Observations on M– [Mariana]’s observation of Burnett not quite to suit me now –  

“Surely she could keep house for me – But Mary, it is not my intention to trust this matter to any servant if I can help it – Surely heaven in its mercy had something in store for me better than this! Do not be long in writing – I would rather hear from you, if but a few lines – 

Tho’ I have felt bound to remember all you said to me at Lawton in May, yet for twenty years your health and happiness have been the dearest objects of my life, and I am always, Mary, very entirely and especially yours AL–”

Had just written so far at 5 20/.. – Sealed and left for John to take to the post tonight my letter to M– [Mariana] (Lawton hall Lawton Cheshire) and dinner at 5 1/2 – Aunt sitting by me –

Off to Lidgate in 25 minutes and there in 25 minutes at 6 20/.. – Miss W– [Walker] surprised but very glad to see me – She was getting low and nervous, and wavering as to whether she had done right, that I was rejoiced to have gone to her. 

She had been near sending off James with packet she had had from Mr. Ainsworth. Half a dozen pages to be returned of canting told detail of particulars of the last day of Mrs. A[insworth]’s life (how she had taken dripping and pills to one poor woman and gone to thank another for cooking them a dinner, ridiculous stuff). 

A proper letter that anyone might see, and one page of half sheet note marked private, reminding her of being his affectionate Annie. I remarked that this last expression was what he could only have used to a woman who had gone all lengths for him. He had said too, that she was the only one he could "rest upon" and that he should send her the “drawing room scrapbook.” 

I commented pretty severely on all this, and she seemed indignant. She had concluded her note written on Monday with my emendation, but dated today "gratefully and very truly yours." I made her write it over again merely to leave out the gratefully, and then dating Wednesday evening.

Say she had just received his packet, had read the detail of the last day of her friends life with deep interest and returned the detail according to his desire. Was much obliged by his offer of the scrapbook, but positively declined accepting it –  She seemed satisfied. 

We talked and got on very well. Had had tea in at eight. Went upstairs at 10 3/4 – Miss W– [Walker] poorly this evening – Complained much of the back of her neck – Had it rubbed with Mr. Day’s ointment. Fir[s]t time when she was to sleep with me. I did not smell the turpentine of it much – Fine day –

  To cut a long story short, we could conclude that clownman grew up in a toxic environment. And as much as I hate to make him sound like a victim, he...was a victim of circumstance. So, today, we delve into Jerome’s feelings in regards to his past.

  Before I begin, I would like to declare that I am very much opposed to any fandom interpretations of his character that present him as a ‘poor wittle baby whose mommy didn’t love him yadayadayada’. This is watering down the character. It’s Bonnie & Clyde syndrome. And my goal in this post is NOT to make you sympathize with him, hence the quote.

  Second, small disclaimer; these are fictional characters in a fictional settings. Though it may bare resemblance to things that happen in real life, I, as the mun, by no means condone any actions described.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: child abuse, corporal punishment, incest, gaslighting, spoilers

  Throughout this post I will be making references to Arthur Phleck, so consider it a spoiler zone for JOKER(2019). These references are mostly used as comparisons in regards to ‘The Joker’s essence and how the victim mentality comes into play in all different iterations of this DC villain, establishing victim-play as a character trait.

PART ONE : ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY

 To begin with, I want to delve into how Jerome himself sees his childhood, how he feels about these past events and how he chooses to present them to others.

  Jerome is someone who hates vulnerability. He is not one to open up or be vulnerable around others where it counts. That is a symptom, or rather, a consequence, of the abuse he has suffered. Child abuse survivors often have severe trust issues, because the people they were supposed to trust (their family) have betrayed them in some shape or form. For example, if a parent baits their child to confess a naughty thing (”If you tell me, I won’t ground you.”) they did and then punishes them after confessing, it is very likely that this child will be more hesitant to confess the next time. After enough repetition, the child may start suspecting other adults of similar behavior. The foundation for a cognitive structure has been laid; “If I trust people with information, they may use it against me.”

  According to Mary Ainsworth, the bond between mother and infant is the most important because the child will then base their future attachments on that prototype. In an oversimplification, parents teach us how to bond with other people, among other things. They are responsible for teaching us how to behave socially and how to interact with others. Furthermore, research has shown that children with depressed mothers are more likely to develop conduct disorders, due to the lack of proper interaction and stimuli at an early age.

 PART TWO: THESE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

   Now, to put all these things into perspective, in my headcanon, Lila Valeska was very much a depressed mother. A depressed alcoholic, to be exact. A broken woman, looking for self esteem in any embrace that would be offered to her. And, because of that,s he was completely incapable to equip Jerome and Jeremiah with the social skills they needed. She never intended to abuse them. And she wasn’t evil. She just wasn’t enough.

   But the problem only begins with Lila. Zachary Trundle very much played the part of her controlling older brother. We can actually see that he was rather controlling in canon, telling her what to do with her kids ( note how Zach told her to throw Jerome in the river but Lila still kept him around ) and being in charge of moving Jeremiah when the time came. We can conclude that Zachary played the part of a father, a brother and potentially a husband substitute as well.

  And it was Zachary who molded Jerome into what he became later on. But... more on their relationship on a later post. ;3c

 Last, but not least, let’s not forget about Paul Cicero, who not only wasn’t there to console Jerome but also gaslighted him. ( “The world doesn’t care about you” ) He tried to instill the core belief in him that he was unworthy and he should just suck it up. And what that does to kids is usually make them think that they deserve the abuse and not try to escape from it. In Jerome’s case, it also resulted in him abusing himself later on. Because when this kind of situation has been NORMALIZED for you, anything other than pain feels abnormal and weird. Jerome would not know how to react to healthy relationships.

PART THREE: ONE IN EVERY DECK

  “Playing the victim role: Manipulator portrays him- or herself as a victim of circumstance or of someone else's behavior in order to gain pity, sympathy or evoke compassion and thereby get something from another. Caring and conscientious people cannot stand to see anyone suffering and the manipulator often finds it easy to play on sympathy to get cooperation.”    ―  George K. Simon Jr.,  In Sheep's Clothing: Understanding and Dealing with Manipulative People    

  All iterations of the Joker have a tragic backstory. Most DC Villains do, as a matter of fact. But how they deal with it differs from one iteration to another. For example, Ledger Joker uses different versions of a tragic backstory to either disturb or gain sympathy from his victims, or to make a point ( ‘you wanna know how I got these scars?’ ). Nicholson Joker uses his tragic backstory as feud fuel and victim cards to pin his misery on Batman. BTAs Joker is shown using some tragic backstory to sway Dr. Quinzel, but later on in the Mad Love episode we see that he’s used the same victim card on Batman too.

  But Phoenix Joker is by far the most compelled to play victim cards. The difference with previous iterations is that Phleck Joker sees himself as the victim too. I’m not saying that the others didn’t, to some extent. But Arthur is immersed in the part. He thinks of himself as a mentally ill loner. He doesn’t just use the victimhood card in a manipulative fashion. He actually experiences emotion over it. That is a much more realistic interpretation of what has come to be known as the serial killer victim complex.

    So how does Jerome view the things that happened in his childhood?

  On the show, Jerome uses victim cards in a similar fashion to previous Joker iterations. “ With Uncle Zach, the beatings never stopped...they went on and on, and yet...nobody ever helped me... ” He tells Bruce. For a moment, we see him performing an emotion. But it is shallow. And that is because, as I mentioned above, Jerome hates vulnerability. So, to me, he is somewhat of a combination between Phleck and the previous Jokers.

  He will use his tragic backstory for pity points when it is convenient. But does he actually see himself as a victim? No. Because that would contradict his prideful nature! A victim is weak, puny, abused and broken. Jerome can’t be those things, because seeing himself as such would be an ego collapse. Jerome sees his life as a movie. Another soap opera. He removes himself from the reality of the situation. There is a ‘that’s life’ mentality in that too. There’s a ‘my life is a comedy’ mentality in that too. But, unlike Phleck, Jerome doesn’t feel bitter about it anymore.

   Even when referencing how he killed Lila to Jim Gordon, or complaining to Jeremiah for abandoning him, the emotional aspect lasts for a minute. Then he starts laughing and making jokes about it. It’s like he wants to distance himself from the reality of the situation. And that’s why he doesn’t use the victim cards in most situations too. Because they would make him look weak and small. And he’s not pathetic like that.

  For example, he wouldn’t start talking about his tragic backstory just to sleep with some cult girl. These tactics are RESERVED for very special individuals, like Bruce Wayne and his brother. He would use this kind of thing against people he knows are emotional or bonded with him to some extend. That’s why he doesn’t do it to Jimbo, for example, because he knows Jimbo isn’t as openly compassionate as Bruce, who would feel sorry for him and want to help him.

incurred a cross last night thinking of Miss W- fine soft morning F50° at 8 ¼ - breakfast at 8 ½ with my father in 50 minutes - out at 9 ½ and at Lidgate at 10 - Mr Parker came in ½ hour and staid 1 ½ hour on the subject of the administration accounts - told me the commoners want to shut up and offer for sale to me the road in front of Shibden as soon as they opened the Lower brea breach road - Miss W- not quite so well today - had been miserable again about Mr Ainsworth  she read me what she had written as a copy of what she meant to write to her sister   asking her opinion and advice on the subject of my proposal to our living together   she seemed wavering and I said the thing seemed now as uncertain between us as ever    I talked a little sentiment and argued against Mr A- and pressed her hard to decide   and one while proposed not seeing her again till Christmas day   when she expected her sister’s answer   then I brought her round to say she should try to cheer up and that I left her now in the same mind as I did the last time   that is that if her sister approved there would no longer be any obstacle between [us] and she would say a positive and decisive yes she had had another letter from her evidently regretting that she had given up the thought of going abroad with me and as far as Mrs Sutherland well could    advising Miss W- to reconsider the thing    letter today again from Mrs Plowes   saying that they were in better spirits and had determined to sell thirty old revisionary shares   (they have as many more new ones) at the market price   the last sold at one hundred and twenty five pounds a share   we talked of Miss W-‘s taking ten shares   which she having now eight hundred in the bank would leave her about seven hundred for the next half year said I had five hundred at Hammersley’s  and that would do   but then ended by advising her to take only five shares   these to be kept with the view of being one day settled on Mrs Plowes and at her death on her two daughters Henrietta Miss W-‘s goddaughter and Ann her favourite home in ½ hour at 6 20 - James walked with me to the bottom of the water gate - brought a lantern but so windy it blew out twice and we groped on without it - could see prettily well when I had got the lamp light out of my eyes and luckily it was fair  - dressed – dinner at 6 ¾ in ¾ hour – then went into the other room till 8 ½ - then wrote the above of today - I seem as if I would have this girl   when perhaps I should be better without her   at all rates I shall be easily reconciled if she says no – left Pickles this morning getting up largeish young sycamore in the hall wood – it turned out so rainy about 11 ½ am that he went home John tells me saying he would return if it was fine, but I suppose he did not as it was a stormy afternoon tho’ with some gleams – fine as I returned this evening - then wrote the following to go tomorrow morning to Mr Jeremiah Rawson -‘Shibden Hall - Tuesday 18 December 1832 - Dear Sir – if I don’t hear from you respecting the coal before the end of this week, I shall feel myself at liberty to dispose of it - the other party have themselves valued at, and offered me for the upper, or hard bed, the same price at which I said you should have it – I am, sir, etc A.
