Hustle (2022, dir. Jeremiah Zagar) - review by Rookie-Critic

I was very impressed by Hustle. It's almost unreal that this movie bears the Happy Madison logo at the beginning because it's so unlike most of Sandler's other films. It is, at the very least, one of the best movies of his career. Not just because of Sandler, either. Now, traditionally, I think we can all agree that athletes have not made for very good actors. That being said, I've never seen athlete acting quite as good as what Juancho Hernangómez accomplishes here. He's reserved when he needs to be, he's loud and believably angry when he needs to be. His performance, given the track record of his peers, is quite frankly astonishing. Admittedly, the first third of the film can feel a bit clichéd and "more of the same" with the sports movie tropes, but once Hernangómez's character Bo Cruz arrives in the States and the film becomes more about the relationship between him and Sandler's Stanley Sugarman is when the film truly begins to shine. That's not to say the latter two-thirds of the film aren't tropey, it's just easier to deal with because everything around them is working.

The attention paid to little details throughout the film is also greatly appreciated, setting up Stanley's daughter Alex's fascination with cameras and film and naturally weaving that into the larger story, Stanley's wife Teresa, played greatly by Queen Latifah, gently massaging his hand because of Stanley's accident. It's little flavor things like that that can really add a sense of reality and polish to the world of a movie and give it a leg up against other similar films in the same genre. My biggest, and really one of my only, complaints is that Queen Latifah's character T was so interesting that I wished the filmmakers had given her a little more to do. Whether you're an Adam Sandler fan or not, whether you're a basketball fan or not, take the time to watch this one.

Adam Sandler tem se destacado quando foge dos papéis bobos. Aqui ele une sua paixão pelo basquete num filme que foi bem recebido na época do lançamento. Fiquei curioso pra ver, pois algumas estrelas da NBA fazem pontas.

depois de ver: "filme feito pra TV", ainda existe isso? quase tudo hoje é feito pra TV, pro streaming... enfim, filme quadrado, sem grandes surpresas. diverte e é esquecível.
