Massive Attack did notice something changed since their massively influential work of the 90's and they persevered thanks to the fact they always did that in their career. However, Heligoland didn't find them reaching for the heights they achieved in the past. Then again, the LP became another one of their approximations, where they tried to do what I mentioned. To be honest, Robert Del Naja and Grantley Marshall did – this should be stated more often – had some great plans, though they probably needed another viewpoint. I mean, the tune in the link does function well, Damon Albarn doesn't disappoint, yet let us play a game – would a collaboration between Massive Attack and him during the 90's sound that nice? Yes, Massive Attack became nice. I agree, they can be anything, but this?!

On this day in 1927, The Fox Film Corporation gave its first demonstration of the process that it would use for a new feature, Movietone News, that would allow filmgoers to see and hear scenes from recent events. Fifty reporters were escorted into Fox-Case's New York studios at 10:00 that morning and filmed. Four hours later, the same group saw and heard themselves when the film of the press conference was screened.

Fox Film Corporation was founded by William Fox. Born Wilheim Fuchs along with the founders of MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros., Universal, and Colombia Picture he was part of a small group of top-level Jewish-born entrepreneurs who fashioned Hollywood. Besides their professions, they practically all fit the same profile: 2nd generation Americans from observant Eastern European Jewish homes all abandoning the traditions of their youth.

It was not a coincidence that the first talking movie out of Hollywood was the Jazz Singer, produced by Warner Bros. The movie is the story of the son of a Jewish cantor, played by Al Jolson, whose father kicks him out of the house because he wants to become a jazz singer. In the process, he falls in love with a non-Jewish woman. The “happy ending” is when he returns home to chant the Kol Nidrei service with his mother and gentile girlfriend watching admirably, and subsequently, his mother comes to watch him perform on Broadway. The movie was quite auto-biographical for Jolson and the group of Jewish filmmakers. The movie was later remade twice. Once starring Jerry Lewis and once Neil Diamond. Again, quite an autobiographical role.

Flora and Sylva

Today we present A Leaf from the 1583 Rembert Dodoens Herbal, printed by Christopher Plantin with a short essay on the history of early herbals along with biographies of Flemish physician and botanist, Rembert Dodoens and notable sixteenth-century Antwerp printer, Christopher Plantin by former Curator of Rare Books at the Huntington Library, Carey S. Bliss. The book was printed in an edition of 385 copies by Grant Dahlstrom at his Castle Press in Pasadena for the members of The Book Club of California, San Francisco in 1977. The text is set in Janson type, with red and black in on the title page. It includes line engravings based on woodcuts. The book begins with an original leaf from Dodoens’s Herbal of 1583.

Carey S. Bliss wrote:

“Rembert Dodoens’s great herbal of 1583, the Stirpium Historiae Pemptrades Sex Sive Libri XXX, was close to the last work to appear during his lifetime. It is without doubt the work that will keep his name forever on the list of great botanists. It brings together all the best parts of his previous botanical works. A rough English translation of the full title would be, “A history of plants in six sections of five parts or thirty books.” The herbal is a folio volume, 13 ½ inches high, 8 inches wide, 860 pages. It is illustrated with 1,305 woodcuts.”

Bliss also provides some history on the illustrations:

“We also know that Plantin spared no expense in providing the best woodcuts to illustrate the herbal. He had Pierre Van der Borcht, the best local woodcut artist, working full time cutting new blocks to illustrate the text. Plantin and Dodeans also selected the best botanical woodblocks formerly used to illustrated earlier works by Dodeans, Fuchs, l’Ecluse, and l‘Obel. Lastly, the text and the proper cuts have been combined in such a way as to provide a very handsome typographic page.”
