The International Court of Justice (ICJ) hears arguments from 52 countries and three international organisations this week – the largest number of parties to participate in any single World Court case.
The 15-judge panel is asked to review Israel’s “occupation, settlement and annexation” as well as policies “aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem”.
The six-day hearings are based on a request by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for a nonbinding advisory opinion on the legality of Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Israel is not taking part in this week’s oral arguments and reacted angrily to the 2022 UNGA request of the ICJ with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it “despicable” and “disgraceful”.
Tumblr media
All damage caused to the Palestinian population as a result of policies and practices illegal under international law must be the object of restitution and, failing that, compensation.
Israel must be required to prosecute people responsible for human rights violations.
Other states have an obligation not to recognise any form of illegal annexation of territories. France will never recognise the illegal annexation of territories in the West Bank.
From an economic standpoint, as requested by the UN all states must make a separation between the Israeli territories and the territories occupied since 1967 and distinguish products depending on that origin.

Jay Rayner, in a restaurant review for The Observer (sister site of The Guardian), sampled the salt beef sandwich, matzah ball soup, chopped liver, bagels, and pickles at a new Jewish deli in London called Freddie’s. (Freddie’s, London: “Over salt beef, I brood on the need to review this Jewish deli” — restaurant review, March 31).
The review was mixed. The Jewish journalist loved the salt beef sandwich, but it “pained” him to criticize the chicken soup as “desperately under-seasoned.” Something else that clearly pained him actually isn’t on the menu. Nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with the review. Though, as you’ll see in the paragraphs below, he tries desperately to imagine one:
And now I should warn you that it’s going to take a dark turn. When I first came across Freddie’s I was excited. For all my lack of faith or observance these dishes, kept alive by a vestigial memory of the shtetl, root me. Then I hesitated. Could I really write about a Jewish restaurant given the current political turmoil? Would I get abuse for doing so? Surely better to keep shtum.
At which point I knew I had no choice: I had to write about it. The horrendous campaign of the government and armed forces of Israel in Gaza cannot be allowed to make being Jewish a source of shame.
When Hamas mounted their 7 October attack on Israel, they committed both an atrocity and a provocation. With so many hostages taken, there were no good options for the Israeli government. Nevertheless, they managed to choose the very worst one. They have killed thousands, starved many more, destroyed homes and turned their country into a pariah. As it happens, they have also made life for Jews who live outside Israel and have no responsibility for the decisions its government takes, so very much harder. I deplore what Israel is doing. But that doesn’t mean I can “refute” my Jewishness. That is a surrender to antisemitism. And so I sit here with my terrific salt beef sandwich and my chocolate mousse, indulging that bit of my Jewish identity which makes sense to me. It’s not much, but it’s all I have. [emphasis added]
Life for the British Jewish community has indeed been much, much harder since Oct. 7.
The CST reported 4,103 instances of anti-Jewish hate in 2023, 2,699 (66%) of which occurred on or after October 7. This figure alone, they note, “exceeds any previous annual antisemitic incident total recorded by CST, and marks an increase of 589% from the 392 instances of antisemitism reported to CST over the same time period in 2022″ [emphasis added].
However, Rayner’s suggestion that the decisions of Israel’s government has made life for Jews “so very much harder” is itself a classic (and codified) trope that has been used by antisemites — blaming Jews in Israel for the racist actions of non-Jews in the UK.
It’s amazing that this even needs to be stated, but the only ones responsible for increased antisemitism — in the UK or anywhere else — are those committing antisemitic acts. Even if you buy into the author’s argument that Jerusalem’s military decisions since the barbarism of Oct. 7 have been the “worst” ones possible, or subscribe to the specific lie that Israel has intentionally “starved” Gazans, what people — other than those who are already predisposed to hating Jews — would take their anti-Israel fury out on diaspora Jews?
Only at The Guardian, would a Jewish restaurant critic writing a review about salt beef, bagels, and shmears feel the need to condemn and distance himself from the Jewish State.

Crystal’s 2022 Favorites
This year I had a lot going on in my life and I read fewer books than usual. Fortunately, the quality was fabulous even if the quantity fell short. I don't think this has happened to me in the past, but all of my favorites are from the same imprint.  Feiwel & Friends is doing some great work.
Travelers Along the Way: A Robin Hood Remix [Crystal's review] Feiwel & Friends
Jerusalem, 1192. The Third Crusade rages on. Rahma al-Hud loyally followed her elder sister Zeena into the war over the Holy Land, but now that the Faranji invaders have gotten reinforcements from Richard the Lionheart, all she wants to do is get herself and her sister home alive.
But Zeena, a soldier of honor at heart, refuses to give up the fight while Jerusalem remains in danger of falling back into the hands of the false Queen Isabella. And so, Rahma has no choice but to take on one final mission with her sister.
On their journey to Jerusalem, Rahma and Zeena come across a motley collection of fellow travelers―including a softspoken Mongolian warrior, an eccentric Andalusian scientist, a frustratingly handsome spy with a connection to Rahma’s childhood, and an unfortunate English chaplain abandoned behind enemy lines. The teens all find solace, purpose and camaraderie―as well as a healthy bit of mischief―in each other’s company.
But their travels soon bring them into the orbit of Queen Isabella herself, whose plans to re-seize power in Jerusalem would only guarantee further war and strife in the Holy Land for years to come. And so it falls to the merry band of misfits to use every scrap of cunning and wit (and not a small amount of thievery) to foil the usurper queen and perhaps finally restore peace to the land.
The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh [Crystal's Review] Feiwel & Friends
Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering.
Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village—and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon—may be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead.
Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin—as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits—Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all.
But she doesn’t have much time: A human cannot live long in the land of the spirits. And there are those who would do anything to keep the Sea God from waking…
A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin [Group Discussion] along with the second book A Venom Dark and Sweet Feiwel & Friends
I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, “These are the hands that buried my mother.”
For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it’s her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her—the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.
When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom’s greatest shennong-shi—masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making—she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning’s only chance to save her sister’s life. But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.
A Venom Dark and Sweet (The Book of Tea #2)
A great evil has come to the kingdom of Dàxi. The Banished Prince has returned to seize power, his rise to the dragon throne aided by the mass poisonings that have kept the people bound in fear and distrust.
Ning, a young but powerful shénnóng-shi—a wielder of magic using the ancient and delicate art of tea-making—has escorted Princess Zhen into exile. Joining them is the princess’ loyal bodyguard, Ruyi, and Ning’s newly healed sister, Shu. Together the four young women travel throughout the kingdom in search of allies to help oust the invaders and take back Zhen’s rightful throne.
But the golden serpent still haunts Ning’s nightmares with visions of war and bloodshed. An evil far more ancient than the petty conflicts of men has awoken, and all the magic in the land may not be enough to stop it from consuming the world…
What books pulled you in this year?

x [1 March 2022] Just yesterday, Palestinian civilians in Jerusalem were celebrating Israa and Miraaj when they were attacked by the Israeli forces. 31 Palestinians were injured and 20 were arrested, most of which are under the age of 15. A special-needs 11 years old girl was shot in the face and had her jaw broken, a typical terrorist for the zionist regime.

It is everyone's responsibility in times like this, when international support is given to Ukraine and rightfully so, to remember others who are identically oppressed yet completely cast into a "controversial conflict" light. If a Ukrainian bombs himself to defend his country New York Post calls him a hero, yet if any other person of colour in a third world country does this the international community doesn't even blink, claiming they don't know enough information to support anyone. For god's sake, when footballers raise the Ukranian flag in a match it's a heroic move but when others raise the palestinian flag they are fined for promoting terrorism. This is not a post to undermine the situation in Ukraine or to question the righteousness to resist invaders, on the contrary. It's a call for anyone reading this to be critical of how each injustice is represented and how right and wrong are manipulated by people in charge for their own good.

27 September 2022: King Abdullah II met with European Council President Charles Michel in Tokyo and stressed the need to bolster cooperation and integration between the region and the EU in energy, transport, water, and food security, especially in light of the repercussions of the crisis in Ukraine.
They reviewed opportunities to expand cooperation between Jordan and the EU, with His Majesty voicing appreciation for the continued development support provided by the EU. (Source: Petra)
The meeting, attended by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, covered recent regional and international developments, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause. The King commended the EU’s position in support of peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution. His Majesty emphasised the need to support efforts to reach just and comprehensive peace, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The King stressed that Jordan will continue exerting all efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship. Discussions also covered regional and international efforts to counter terrorism within a holistic approach. For his part, European Council President Michel expressed the EU’s keenness to step up cooperation with Jordan, voicing appreciation for the Kingdom’s role in hosting refugees. Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan and Jordan’s Ambassador to Japan Lina Annab attended the meeting.

Bible Versus from Nona the Ninth (Spoilers?)
John 5:20   (p73)
The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these.
John 5:23   (p98)
so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
John 5:18   (p127)
Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God
John 8:1     (p188)
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
John 19:18 (p219)
There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.
John 5:1     (p270)
Some time later there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
John 3:20   (p279)
Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
John 9:22   (p318)
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
John 1:20   (p395)
He did not refuse to confess, but openly declared, “I am not the Christ.”
John 5:4     (p432)
From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had. (I am no way a practitioner of the Christian/Catholic faith so this list is compiled from Google searches. I used BibleHub and BibleGateway to put this together so if there's errors please DM me and I'll fix it. Just wanted to do something to put them all together in one place for anyone reading.)

Rosh HaShana recipes for September 24, 2022
The Rosh HaShana holiday is coming this week, and here's a few articles for the occasion. For example, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has 7 recipes for the holiday, including carrot soup, and challah with olives.
USA Today/Asbury Park Press lists some fruits often eaten during the holiday, including carambola.
The Orlando Sentinel has an article about kugel (which may require payment to view).
Here's also an extra article from the Jerusalem Post reviewing a kosher Vietnamese restaurant in Netanya.
And with that, let me wish everyone a happy Rosh HaShana, and enjoy some good dining this week.

Olympic Games Legacy: Barcelona 1992
The Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games gradually come to symbolize a pioneer of urban regeneration and sustainable development for the future, still influencing and giving impetus to the city's long-term vision and becoming an example for many other host cities. Academically, the campaign around the Barcelona Olympics was to explore the significant role that the "mega-event" can play as a driver of urban regeneration and a promoter of social – economic development. Preliminary to the Olympics, several great changes have messed up Barcelona's industrial past but now, a new era of modernization dominates in the city (Rosenthal, 1992). Investment in world-class sports infrastructure, for instance, the impressive Olympic Stadium, not only increased the quality of the existing infrastructure system but also helped in economic growth and diversification of tourism (Scheu, Preuß and Könecke, 2019).
In addition, the Barcelona Olympics production team got tremendous publicity for the green initiative which placed the environment higher in people's priorities. Media coverage shone Barcelona's slightly laterally planning strategies that integrated green space and ecological preservation with investments in public transport and doors to nature, fairing a new trend in eco-friendly event hosting (Scheu, Preuß and Könecke, 2019). The memory of the Barcelona Olympics is still celebrated and glorified by the media as a flawless model of how major sports events may be left behind and lead to long-standing and abundant advantages to the host cities, thereby inspiring more urban planners and policymakers in the future.
Tumblr media
In addition, the fact that Jerusalem was shared between the two communities for hundreds of years illustrates the durability of the city (Rosenthal, 1992). A lot of the venues which were related to the Olympics have been renovated for sporting activities, cultural performances and recreational purposes thus increasing the standard of living for the citizens and the visitors passing the mixed city. It disseminates from the Barcelona Olympics a concept of anchoring event hosting in the strategic plans that consider the long-term benefits while leading to the renewal of urban areas and ensuring smooth running (Scheu, Preuß and Könecke, 2019). In short, the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games were an impressive demonstration of leading-edge ideas, sustainable planning, and people's work altogether, and left the city with a unique characteristic and further inspired future generations to push for urban perfection.

"Paisley Prince Songbook" design featured in an exhibition in Jerusalem
The Paisley Prince Songbook design was featured in an exhibition in Jerusalem in 2022 and 2023. The Times of Israel reviewed the exhibition and complimented the Paisley Prince Songbook wallpaper, designed by Patrick Moriarty.
The “Paisley Prince Songbook” design by Patrick Moriarty was displayed on a large exterior wall of the Museum for Islamic Art, in Jerusalem Israel. Patrick created the Prince-themed design in Southend-on-Sea UK in 2018. A curator at the Museum for Islamic Art saw the design online and contacted Patrick to ask his permission to include the design in an exhibition, which was titled “Paisley: A…

TRAVELERS ALONG THE WAY takes place during the Crusades (just as in the original Robin Hood tales), and features characters whose archetypes and circumstances are recognizable, but don’t require that similarity to be enjoyable. I like Rahma, and the generally breezy rapport between the party members. There are moment of tension, especially related to the actual war which is the whole reason Rahma and her sister are here in the first place. My favorite bit is the sequence with the Templars, and I like how the whole thing wraps up.

KNOWING YOUR BIBLE
February 19. 2023: Dear Friends, This blog will be the last blog of the current series on important people and events in the Bible. Focusing on familiar people and events that many have heard, or even read about in the Bible, broadens the understanding of what God is trying to teach to the reader and student of the Bible. Remember the more one reads and studies the Bible, the more one learns about God and his influences on people’s lives. Also keep in mind that the Bible is God’s Holy Word to its readers. In 2nd Timothy, chapter 3, verses 16-18, it is written “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.”
This series began on August 7,2022 and continued through November 13. 2022, after which time, because of the holidays, the series was placed on hold until   January 8, 2023.  At that time the series was restarted and has continued through today. If time allows, return to the beginning of the series on August 7, 2022, by going to keeganbooks.com. and review the series, blog by blog, to refresh and refine the knowledge that has been learned in this series. The series provides a broad base of knowledge that will enhance learning and understanding of the Bible.  And in the future, again review the series when able, just to keep the knowledge learned in the series at the forefront to be used throughout one’s Bible study.
Last week, a partial review of some of the important people written about in the Old Testament was discussed with specific Bible verses listed to help in locating where in the Bible the person or persons were located to be read about. In this week’s blog, verses with some of the rest of the people and events in the Old Testament and the New Testament will be listed. Because of space limitations, the amount of verses may be limited.
MAY GOD BLESS YOUR BIBLE STUDY THIS WEEK !
The rules of Passover: Exodus chapter 11; The Exodus from Egypt: Exodus, chapters 12, 13 and 14; The crossing over into the Promised Land: Joshua, chapters 3 and 4.The fall of Israel 722 BCE: 2nd Kings, chapter 17, verses 3-23. The fall of Judah, 586 BCE: 2nd Kings chapters 24 and 25. The rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem: Ezra, chapters 3-5. Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem: Nehemiah, chapter 3; King David wrote approximately 50% of the Psalm. His son, King Solomon wrote the Wisdom Books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. The Prophet Books extend forward towards the New Testament after the book of Ecclesiastes. The Prophet books are divided by the size of the book with Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel’ being considered the Major Prophets Books due to their larger size. The rest of the Prophet Books after Daniel being considered Minor Prophet Books. Daniel and the Lions Den: Daniel, chapter 6; Jonah and the Whale, Jonah, chapter 1.     THE NEW TESTAMENT: Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the most important person in the Bible and in the world. His birth  life, death, and resurrection, can be found in the first 4 books of the New Testament, the Gospel books, of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. With the coming of the Lent Season, beginning on Ash Wednesday, this week, consider reading 1 or 2 of the gospel books during Lent. Reading 1-2 chapters a day will provide so much information about Jesus. Jesus’ birth is recorded in Matthew, chapter 1, verses 18-25, and Luke chapter 2. Jesus’ life is recorded all through the Gospel books. The recording of Jesus’ death and resurrection can be found in Matthew, chapters 26, 27 and 28; Mark, chapters 14, verses 32 through chapter 16; Luke, chapter 22, verses 47 through chapters 23 and 24, and John, chapters 18 through chapter 21. The names and lives of Jesus’ 12 disciples can be found throughout the Gospel books. Refer to last week’s blog for names of the disciples and other important people written about in the New Testament. Next week, we will begin a series on Lent that will last until Easter. I hope you each have a great week!

The John Verses from Nona the Ninth
Mostly using the New Oxford Study Bible, a Catholic edition, double checked with other editions.
20:8 -- Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed.
5:20 -- The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished.
15:23 -- Who-ever hates me hates my father also.
5:18 -- For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own father, thereby making himself equal to God.
8:1 -- while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Some editions kind of mush this with the end of 7:53 -- And they went back, each to their own home.
5:1 -- After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
19:18 -- There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
3:20 -- For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so their deeds may not be exposed.
9:22 -- His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
1:20 -- He confessed and he did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah."
5:4 -- Is a verse NOT FOUND in some modern Catholic bibles. The Oxford simply ignores its existence. My New American Bible Fireside Study Edition says: "Toward the end of the second century in the West and among the fourth-century Greek Fathers, an additional verse was known:
'For [from time to time] an angel of the Lord used to come down into the pool; and the water was stirred up, so the first one to get in [after the stirring of the water] was healed of whatever disease afflicted him.'
This verse is missing from all early Greek manuscripts and the earliest versions, including the original Vulgate. It's vocabulary is markedly non-Johannine." Ronald Knox retains it with almost that exact wording in his translation, and merely adds in a footnote, "This verse is omitted in some manuscripts."  My King James bible includes it.

Where did they find that child? She is amazing! It took about ten seconds to 100% believe that she was indeed Leia Organa and 30 seconds to 1000% love her.
Yet another fantastic surprise from yet another awesome series.

My #1 post of 2022
So happy about Razer getting...well...not closure per say, but an update on Young Justice.
But seriously, hope fueled by rage? I’m not sure I’ve related to anything more in my entire life.
Hope for the best, destroy everything when it’s worst.
