Jewish Festival of Lights

The Jewish Festival of Lights is known as Hanukkah, also spelled Chanukah. It is an eight-day celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after it was reclaimed by the Maccabees from the Greek Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.

The holiday is typically celebrated in December, and it involves lighting a nine-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. One candle is lit on the first night, and an additional candle is added each subsequent night until all nine candles are lit on the eighth night. The ninth branch, known as the shamash, is used to light the other candles.

Other Hanukkah traditions include playing with a spinning top known as a dreidel, which has Hebrew letters on each side, and eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts). The use of oil symbolizes the miracle of the small amount of oil that burned for eight days in the Temple's menorah.

Jewish Festivals

Jewish festivals, also known as Jewish holidays or Jewish holy days, are special occasions that commemorate significant events in Jewish history and religious traditions. Some of the major Jewish festivals include:

Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year, usually celebrated in September or October, marks the beginning of the High Holy Days.

Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, is observed ten days after Rosh Hashanah, and it is a day of fasting, prayer, and repentance.

Sukkot: The Feast of Tabernacles or Booths, a week-long festival in October, commemorates the Israelites' journey through the desert after leaving Egypt and living in temporary shelters.

Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights, an eight-day holiday in December, celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days.

Purim: A festive holiday in February or March, commemorates the salvation of the Jews from a plot to kill them in ancient Persia.

Passover: A spring festival in March or April, commemorates the liberation of the Jews from slavery in Egypt and the Exodus from Egypt.

Shavuot: The Feast of Weeks, which usually falls in May or June, celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the first harvest of the year.

This class is perfect for non-Jews looking to undo their biases, conversion students looking for a more in-depth way to deal with the question of antisemitism, future conversion students looking to undo biases, and Jews and non-Jews alike looking to better understand and combat antisemitism! 

As a note, this class will also be designed to support non-Jews hoping to criticize the State of Israel without being viewed as antisemitic.  This class will be helpful for anyone who seeks to better understand how antisemitism is at the center of white nationalist propaganda, and anyone who wishes to learn not only about various dog whistles, but the history of ancient and medieval antisemitic ideas that *still* permeate our society in every community and every political ideology.

Description:

It did not begin nor end with the Holocaust. In our first class, come unlearn your biases and better understand how many popular antisemitic myths have come about over the past 2000 years. This will be an intersectional conversation that will dive deep into this heartbreaking history.

In our second class we will learn Josh's  three simple steps to help us combat antisemitism.  They also work well in defeating other evils in this world. With this frame of reference, you can help us rid the world of antisemitic bias and other horrific biases that plague humanity.

Both of these classes will be safe and brave spaces. We will always assume goodwill and that we are all on a different life journey.   The first part will be held on Sunday, August 16th at 2:00PM EST, the second part on Sunday, August 23rd at 2:00PM EST.  

The Jewish People need you to be knowledgeable about the history of antisemitism so you can help support us when we need you most!  Come join for a spiritually meaningful, informative, and supportive communal learning experience to undo your biases about Jews, Judaism, and Jewishness!
