Haruomi Hosono reminded me that Japanese music remains one of my favourites. Sure, I have to admit I understand the lyrics through Google translate, though I don't need the latter to appreciate the intricacies of, say, Tatsuro Yamashita. Most of his works became visible on our shores only recently, but I continue to be astounded by his opus a lot. He somehow sounds both Western and Eastern. Mind you, I am aware of the weirdness of the sentence, so allow me to elucidate You see, he somehow brings the forms we are familiar with into the shapes we didn't really think of. Sure, he stays within the roads of pop music, yet what a majestic one he makes! Check the song on the link and marvel at the incredible groove.

Eddie Daniels – Morning Thunder
This is an odd and rather interesting record. Eddie Daniels, who at the time was still largely unknown, plays clarinet and occasional alto in commercial settings while backed by a large rhythm section, reeds, strings and even some voices; typical for an overproduced Columbia album of the period. The material is largely forgettable but Daniels’ clarinet playing is so brilliant that he completely overcomes the surroundings and drastically uplifts the music. Although not on the level of his upcoming GRP projects, this out-of-print LP is surprisingly rewarding – Scott Yanow/AllMusic.
Acoustic Bass – Rufus Reid Bass – Anthony Jackson Drums – Buddy Williams (tracks: A3), Steve Gadd Guitar – Bob Rose Keyboards – Jorge Dalto Percussion – Jimmy Maelen, Nicky Marrero Clarinet, saxophone – Eddie Daniels

We have seen Roxy Music did the majority of their career without Brian Eno's wild participation, this tends to get forgotten quite a lot. Moreover, they remained true to their laissez-faire ethos, though many would claim their swan song, Avalon, abandoned that. However, I have retorted on a multitude of my posts about the record that the disc represents the perfect ending to their opus, i.e. the LP shows a lyrical speaker achieving his happiness, so where could the group go after this? No surprise they didn't augment their reunion with a platter, they knew Avalon's sumptuous soundscapes function as a fine closure to their story. As you can hear on the title track, he's still visiting parties, but this time he locates what he was always looking for in them.

Mr. Michael Kamen had quite a weird career. He veered between the Eurythmics and Bryan Adams, though he also collaborated with David Gilmour. However, I would claim that him working with Tim Curry could be seen as a shock.  Before you dare to ask – yes, we are talking about that Tim Curry who had a bizarre rock career on the side. You see, his music reminds me of someone who looked at the popular rockers at the time and decided to take the formulas to go off course, though he sadly didn't do too much of the latter, he somehow seemed beholden to the contemporary trends. Still, you could trace the hints of an intriguing figure he could've developed into on a couple of his songs. Then again, he did have a main job, but I wish he kept his musical gig going.
