Though San Antonio leaders have been dedicated to making sure residents who want to get vaccinated can do so, they have not forgotten those who succumbed to COVID-19 since the disease first emerged.
On Thursday, May 27, City of San Antonio leaders will be joined by community organizations to honor the more than 3,400 lives lost to the virus. Leaders will come together to create a memorial and encourage others to get vaccinated in an effort to care for the community. Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Assistant City Manager Colleen Bridger, District 4 Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia and Head Start’s JoAnne M. Ramirez will be part of the event to take place at 10 a.m.

Titled “Deep in Our Hearts: A Memorial to Lives Lost to COVID,” the display will feature red hearts inside which family members of those who have died from the virus have written their loved one’s name and, if they wish, a prayer. While the memorial is on display, San Antonians are welcome to bring flowers and photos of their friends and family lost.
The memorial will be housed at the corner of Market and South Alamo streets. Each red heart will be attached to a chain link fence that surrounds the future Civic Park.
City leaders hope the memorial will not only serve as a visual representation of the lives lost, but also as a place where locals can come to mourn their loved ones and heal.
More information about the memorial can be found here.
