Program: Techpoint Inspired 2018 Theme: The future is now
So I was invited by a friend to this program some days ago and I must admit I was reluctant at first because, what does a lawyer really know about tech? But I was convinced and I must say, I do not regret attending. The program was held at Pistis Conference Centre, Lekki, Lagos. The turn-out was incredible, well over 1000 people in attendance. Different speakers and topics ranging from Crypto currency, Blockchain, to the Hyperloop project by rLoop. I was amazed at the ideas behind the projects or fields if you will. People are really doing amazing things. Dreams are only limited by your imagination. The day was going well enough until a particular speaker named Richard Ikiebe, PhD came on stage. He said a lot of things that didn’t sit well with me and my friend, ofcourse. He spoke about how our generation doesn’t dream and act on our ideas. I was baffled by this point because our generation is one with the least opportunities in this country. We struggle for everything, from gaining admission into universities, to getting the course you want to study, to being allowed to even study what you want as an individual.  We live in a time where lecturers don’t even read scripts before grading and girls being threatened with bad grades if they don’t give up their bodies. When you eventually survive this huddle, you come out a graduate…Yay!!! But quickly realize that you have just joined the never ending unemployed youth train. You finally get a job anywhere and are underpaid, paid equivalent to your transport fare as your full salary. Just last week, I was told a long time friend was being paid 15000 (fifteen thousand naira) as salary by his firm, a Law Firm. Being a lawyer I was naturally depressed because I know what we went through to get this degree. You’re telling me we went through all that stress, sleepless nights for 15,000 naira, really? This man had the guts to place the blame on us, like the opportunities are endless and we are slacking. News flash old man, your generation is the problem. Your generation is what is wrong with this country. The greed exhibited by your generation is why Nigeria is in this mess right now. Using “football age” at work just so you wont have to retire early, thereby hoarding spaces that young vibrant qualified workers could fill and improve current situations. How about you leave your post so people can move up the ladder, thereby creating vacancies and job opportunities. We live in a time where 1st class graduates are looking for jobs. Mr PhD, don’t tell us we are not working hard enough when 80% of us have to get two or more jobs just to survive. Its obvious he has lost touch with reality and is talking based on assumptions and not facts. Please Grandpa, go and play with your grandkids. On the other hand, a brilliant mind came on stage after our Granddad stepped down. The chairman of GIGM motors, Mr Chidi Ajaere. He was a breath of fresh air and unlike the previous speaker, he was in tune with reality. Said that our generation lacks the basic opportunities to strive these days and this is not due to lack of ideas and trying to chase dreams but the fact that platforms are not in place to take advantage of. A man has an Idea, he wants to bring it to reality, he needs funds, backing, policies in place to take advantage of. There is nothing like this in this country or very little.  Bank policies are not out to help either; They instead, exploit the man and he ends up struggling with the premiums in place and finds himself more in debt than when he started. They then come in ,like vultures and feed on his corpse or worse, take over the business, his idea and make money of it; Leaving him to rot. Corruption, greed have eaten deep into our economy and into the minds and characters of our so called leaders/helpers/Grandpas and they are the ones who should be blamed for our struggles. We are not saints, we have our own shortcomings but they shouldn’t act like things were rosy and we fucked it up. It was fucked up before we came into existence and until this ancestral generation steps down, I fear we will have to keep barely surviving as all efforts to lift ourselves into limelight has been shot down by greed and the unrepentant older generation. All in all, Techpoint Inspired 2018 was a unique platform for business opportunities and relationship building. I learnt a lot and will definitely be there for next years conference; you should too. The future is now, the future is yours.
