Just my almost 2 am ramblings

I am not a writer, a poet, or artistically talented but I still feel the urge to express how profound a love I have for Nicky and Joe, both individually and as a whole. All I've been able to really do is give them tribute on my skin with ink. I don't have the talent many of you have in other forms of artist expression. But I try because well..

It's JoeandNicky

They have their own thoughts, their own opinions, their own flaws, and their own strengths. They were even on two different sides once, yet their souls knew. Two halves of one. Love overcame their differences and persists for over 900 years through all challenges. Beyond measure and reason. Many times they don't need to even speak. Just a look, a touch. And they always check in. Scanning with eyes to make sure the other is whole, foreheads touching to say they are still there, Joe's hand on Nicky's hip as their startled awake. Every time one revives they check their other half does as well. They don't breathe till the other breathes. There's no life if one is gone.

Everyday I think of their story and can't wait for the next part. The next time we see their tenderness for eachother and for their family of immortals. But especially for one another. I'm not sure how exactly to describe how 2 fictional characters became this for me but it's like home. Maybe in loving something so strongly you turn it real. It becomes just as real as any of us.

It was really destiny. Destiny for their love story. Destiny for all of them to find eachother. And really I believe Destiny for Marwan and Luca to be JoeandNicky. Noone else could have done it.

It's been on my mind. In a random moment it seized my heart and it actually hurt how much I loved them thinking of them. It felt like my chest physically tore picturing our next moments seeing them together. Sometimes you can love so much it actually hurts. And yet to see them I would choose it every time.

Extra long I know and maybe incoherent and random but yea just thoughts as I wait another day/night to see them come back..

Happy to share some of my personal favourites among the incredible artwork gracing the TOG fandom. Especially some that maybe haven’t been as widely shared as others:

Monk Nicky by @artgroves — this one has touched me from the moment I saw it and never let me go. The yearning! And there’s a beautiful Yusuf to go with it and one of them both. These pieces are beyond beautiful, and I was so happy to match some words to them.

Nile and Nicky on a mission looking dashing by @beepbeepsan — can’t get over the fabric. It’s insane! Both of them look beautiful. And the colour!?

Joe and Nicky with Tattoos by @begaydocrime-nickyjoe — this one is just so full of warmth and happiness and laughter. I want to live in this art. Joe’s hair is amazing! Please treat yourself!

Drowning by @hachinana87 — screaming, crying, throwing up. This is the one that always gets me.

Cuddles by @hesnotmy — they capture such an intimacy and love and warmth. Beautiful moments of Joe and Nicky being JoeandNicky.

Pray by @hoax1918 — it’s the quiet moments and the forehead touches!

Ghost Joe by @isabellehemlock — this has such a light and mysterious vibe and Nicky clinging to Joe is just heart-wrenching.

Nicky and Joe with flowers by @ournextdoorneighbor — it’s the vulnerability and the dichotomy of these warriors and the delicate flowers, and it just makes me feral.

Mamma Mia by @non-un-topo — this is just so hilarious and I can hear the song looking at the art!

Line cooks Nicky and Nile by @linaxart — It’s exquisite! The beauty of the mundane but also the colours and the lighting!? It looks like a stained glass window. With garbage cans. And that just makes me want to kneel down and worship this art.

Ange de Goussinville by @sassy-wartime-nun — Maybe the best Andy I know. The depth and perspective! *chef’s kiss*

Midnight by @seanchaidh7 — I love this one! The pose and their hands intertwined. It’s like a dream, a little wild, but beautiful.

Joe and Nicky and bathtubs by @shirohasu1 — one of many favourites. But I can’t resist a man in a bathtub. And the style is just so amazing in its simplicity. Love them.

7) When is your preferred time to write?

Usually evenings when I have the most free time. You will never catch me writing in the morning.

8) Where do you take your inspiration from?

A bunch of my fic is based on prompts but I need like 1000 prompts to cherry pick from. And then there are some fic ideas that spring randomly from my mind and I'm like whoa is this how creative people feel all the time?

21) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

So many writers!! I want to like export my entire user subscription list and gush. @outpastthemoat writes really atmospheric Star Wars fic that I'm in awe of. Also, this might be a weird compliment, but the ability to vary sentence structure in interesting ways? Like all my sentences start with a character's name until I force myself to go back and fix some.

In general, I always admire people's ability to somehow make mundane point A to point B stuff interesting and to write long fic.

27) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?

I am an extremely chaotic writer. The only time I ever remember writing anything remotely like an outline was one time I was writing a non-linear fic and I timelined it on the back of an envelope.

1, 14 & 28 for the fic meme!

1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-fic.

It’s an AU, but it’s likely still set with canon elements. It’s a divergence or something related closely to it. It’s got elements of canon reflected in a similar way that’s almost like holding up a funhouse mirror to it (like Band of Brothers, but as a baseball team; H50, but everything in the world is supernatural, King Arthur, but they’re assassins, Old Guard except it’s an Anastasia AU). It’s probably not gen, because as much as I don’t much indulge in romance in my personal life, boy do I love writing it in a fic. 

14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

I hate the whole ‘said is dead’ advice, because it can backfire so quickly. Said is sometimes exactly the right word, and using too many adjectives to shy away from it only ends up making something more disjointed in the end.

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

This one feels unfair because I have a laundry list of fic writers that I admire and aspire to be like, but I will go with the first three that came to mind when I think about fic writers who put together epic plots and making them seem so natural while also having wildly incredible prose and characterization. @werebearbearbar​, @kaydeefalls​, and @myrmidryad​ are literally godly fic writers, imo. Each of them have written something that had me stepping away going ‘god I wish I could be that good’ and in the case of the latter, I legit thought ‘why should I ever bother when something this good already exists’. They take such professional-level care in this hobby and I bow down to their talent.

Andromache the Scythian- Requested by:N/A

Prompt: “Can we make a decision? Please?”

They couldn’t believe what they were hearing. Andy was not one to let her feelings get the best of her. When Nile asked her why she blames herself for Quyhn’s death, she reasoned losing a soldier, nothing more. So, why was she saying all these things now?

“What do you want to do Andromache!? You can’t admit everything and then take it all back!” they say with tears in their eyes. Andy knew she got herself into some deep shit by the use of her full name. Her eyes softened. “I just- I can’t lose you. I don’t want you to get in the way of things, and I definitely don’t want anyone to use you against me” They stepped back, away from Andy. “You think of me as a weakness?” hurt evident in their eyes. Realizing her mistake, Andy looks them straight in their eyes “I don’t want you getting hurt” Their brows furrowed in confusion. they shake their head, tired of the situation they’re in.”You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you. I’ve kept all my feelings to myself for centuries! And when you finally tell me you feel the same way, all of a sudden, you want to stop it?”

This is stupid. They thought. How easy was it for Andy to just let everything go? Was it a perk for living that long. They’ve lived long sure, but not as long as Andy. “I still feel the same about you (nickname).”

This was not getting anywhere. “You say you feel the same and yet, you’re so very willing to give up on us just like that. What about the others Andromache? Don’t you think that I’m strong!? I’m like you too. I can fight. I don’t have to be a weakness, I don’t have to be your weakness. Why can’t I be your strength Andy?” the desperation in their voice becoming clearer as their words fade into the air. Falling back into a chair, they slightly pull their back in hopes of calming themself. “Can we just make a decision? Please?” they say exasperated Guilt bubbles up inside of Andy, sensing her frustration, she takes a deep breath before bending infront of them, so that they’re eye-level.

They were right. Why did she have to push away the good things that come her way? She knew that they were strong, that they could handle themself. So, what was she going on about? Andy realized that they’re indeed the reason why she fights harder every mission they face.

Their eyes meet, and Andy could see how much hurt she caused. They leaned forward, faces closer to each other than before. Their voice soft, “Stop pushing me away Andromache.”

Mutual pining! Truly my favorite trope. Almost all of my fics are tagged with this. Sometimes enemies to friends to lovers have mutual pining (Joe/Nicky!) so I get to have both!

18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?

Not super structured but generally in the evenings from the comfort of my couch.

saturday: what gets you excited whilst writing?

I really love getting out of the exposition and monotony of just blocking a scene. When I feel like I’ve hit a great description, I’m fucking elated. Also, whenever I feel like I can turn a trope on its head or write a brand new idea, I love love love that.

march: do you listen to music whilst writing? 

sadly, my brain won’t let me process lyrics + writing, because I tend to touch-type and sometimes the lyrics will impact what I’m writing. that said, if I’m doing a super angsty piece, I will usually cue up some really bleak music to get myself in the sad mood 

minutes: how long does it normally take you to complete a fic? 

these days? way too long. when I was younger, I could bang out a 50k piece in about 11-12 days, and even now when I’m inspired, I can write 2k in 30 minutes with no problem. Unfortunately, these days, my daily average is about 600 words of updates on something, which means that a 3k piece will take me at least 5 days of work, then all the edits and fixes. I miss when I could just grind out thousands of words a day

forever: do you balance fic writing with original concept stuff?

also lately no :( I have two original ideas that I’d like to work on, but the truth is that because they’re so privately mine and mine alone, the prospect of sharing something sooner tends to win out. I do keep plugging away, but inevitably the fic stuff is just easier, and since it’s all a hobby for me, I don’t feel too bad about it because my original work isn’t intended to make me money

There have been days like this for centuries, thinks Nicky—long, hot days, heavy with humidity, when everything’s still and there isn’t a breeze. He doesn’t like them, no matter how many of them he’s lived through, and he lies sullenly on his belly on the bed, thoroughly naked, face turned toward the open window as he catalogs all the places he’s damp with sweat. The bedcovers are on the floor in a heap, and the sheet on which he’s lying is too warm. He’s hungry, thirsty, and drowsy, and can’t decide which impulse he should satiate if he can summon up the energy to stir.

The front door of the flat opens and closes, and he listens to the thud of Joe’s running shoes hitting the floor. There’s a pause, and then the whisper of soft footfalls as Joe pads down the hall, and then he’s pushing open the bedroom door, water bottles tucked under his arm and a paper bag in his hand. “Lunch,” he says, walking around the bed to set a water bottle on the floor by Nicky.

Nicky makes a soft noise of appreciation – the best he can manage – and shifts enough to pick up the bottle, unscrew the cap, and drink. He glances over at Joe, who’s thrown the paper bag on the bed, tugging off his shorts and t-shirt without once dislodging the leopard-skin baseball cap sitting backwards on his head. Naked, save for the hat, Joe cracks the cap of his own bottled water and drinks thirstily, and Nicky watches, amused and—god help him—charmed.

“What?” Joe asks once he’s drunk half the bottle.

“You look ridiculous,” says Nicky, rolling onto his back and gesturing toward the hat.

“You mean fabulous,” Joe says, grinning cockily and setting his water on the dresser.

“I do not,” Nicky says, laughing as Joe crawls up the bed toward him. “Do not come near me, I can feel your body heat from here, do not . . . Joe,” he manages just before Joe kisses him messily, and Nicky can’t help but kiss him back.

“I’m a menace,” Joe says smugly as he pulls away.

“You are,” Nicky agrees. He reaches up to twist a finger in one of the curls sticking up through Joe’s cap. “It’s a good thing I like you.”

“You love me,” says Joe.

“I do, for my sins,” Nicky says with a grin. “But god, you’re so warm.”

Which is Joe’s cue to pull off his hat and sprawl happily across Nicky like the contrarian he is, head tucked against Nicky’s shoulder. “You mean hot,” he says firmly, and Nicky swats at his ass, but doesn’t push him away, wraps an arm around him and kisses his hair.

Joe sighs contentedly, and seems to grow heavier as he relaxes. “But don’t worry,” he says around a yawn. “You’re hot, too, habibi.”

And Nicky catalogs all the places they’re touching, the awful press of the afternoon sun, and smiles to himself. “Thank you,” he murmurs. “You’re very kind.”
