History in the Ring 🥊
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, boxing became a mainstream spectacle, with professional fighters touring the country and participating in matches in front of large crowds. Despite its popularity, African American boxers faced particular challenges while trying to earn their place.
Tumblr media
One of the most famous African American boxers of this era was Jack Johnson, the first black fighter to be crowned the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Johnson won the title in 1908 and held it until 1915, during which time he faced widespread racism and discrimination. Despite this, he remained a dominant force in the sport and is remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Tumblr media
In the decades that followed, African American boxers continued to break barriers and make their mark on the sport. In the 1950s and 1960s, fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Louis became household names and helped to popularize boxing around the world.

June 22, 1937: A crowd of 65,000 at Comiskey Park in Chicago watched Joe Louis became the 1st African-American World heavyweight champion since Jack Johnson.
Louis dethroned James Braddock, knocking out "The Cinderella Man" in the 8th round.
Braddock was able to knock Louis down in round 1, after that, he could accomplish little.
The Brown Bomber's victory was a seminal moment in African American history. Thousands of African Americans stayed up all night across the country in celebration.
Noted author and member of the Harlem Renaissance Langston Hughes described Louis's effect in these terms:
"Each time Joe Louis won a fight in those depression years, even before he became champion, thousands of African-Americans on relief or W.P.A., and poor, would throng out into the streets all across the land to march and cheer and yell and cry because of Joe's one-man triumphs. No one else in the United States has ever had such an effect on Negro emotions – or on mine. I marched and cheered and yelled and cried, too."— #joelouis #boxing #history

Art in the Stations: West Riverfront
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once known as Joe Louis Arena Station, West Riverfront is making way for a new neighborhood feel. Whimsical, glittery colors in "Voyage" by Gerome Kamrowski embodies both mythology and astrology. The tiles were made in Spillemberg, Italy by Crovatto Mosaics- the same company that created "Calvacade of Cars" in Huntington Place Station!
Kamrowski has been creating beautiful glass mosaics for many years, as shown below in "2002, Cottage Studio, Ann Arbor."

Hop off the Detroit People Mover and head to the riverwalk to check out the beautiful pedestrian path as well as the new Water Square development.
Although there is a lot of work to be done to make it a walkable neighborhood, the 25-story Residences at Water Square is under construction at the former Joe Louise Arena site. Currently pre-leasing for February 2024, the project is coming together nicely!
