Album Review: The Pixies "The Night The Zombies Came"

Decades after getting into The Pixies with their album Surfer Rosa and then getting to see them reunited in 2004, I have gotten to cover the group here on this blog a number of times over the years. In addition to reviewing their 2016 album Head Carrier, 2019′s Beneath the Eyrie, 2022's Doggerel and I also got to review their re-issue of 1988′s classic Come On Pilgrim... It'sSurfer Rosa and I got to do a concert review on my birthday in 2017! Earlier this year they parted ways with bassist Paz Lenchantin, their bassist since 2014. New bassist Emma Richardson has been touring with the group since the Spring and is about to make her debut recording with the band's 9th album The Night The Zombies Came, which drops today from BMG.

I suppose we can call this Pixies 3.0 after Pixies 1.0 ended when longtime bassist Kim Deal left in 2013. There there was a brief interlude with Simon Archer and Kim Shattuck before Pixies 2.0 began with Paz Lenchantin joining in 2014. She had big shoes to fill, but she more than held her own and I was bummed to hear she and the band parted ways. Now we're into Pixies 3.0 as Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls, has joined the band this year. Obviously the core of the band is singer/guitarist/songwriter Black Francis, drummer David Lovering and guitarist Joey Santiago and the bass position is one that has interchanged over the years.

I thought the band's last album Doggerel was their best since they reunited in 2004 and therefore I had high hopes the follow up would be even better. This album was by no means bad, but it was quite an act to follow. I have to say there are some rockers here. "You're So Impatient" is quite a face melter and there's more than a few earworms like "Johnny Good Man" and "Oyster Beds". The songwriting is still there and the band is still a tight unit. But this is an album you need to listen to a few times to truly get it and say "I get it now!"...similar to some of those classic albums like Doolittle, where I was like "what the hell is this?" at first, but a few more listens and I was like "now I get it, it's the magic of The Pixies"!
