The Bäckahäst [Swedish folklore]
Evil aquatic horse spirits are a common trope in Germanic, Nordic and British folktales. The Scottish Kelpie, the Icelandic Nykur, the Norwegian Nøkk etc are all variations of (and derived from) the same story. In Sweden, this role is given to the Näck: an evil supernatural horse creature that convinces people to mount it and ends up drowning the victim.
In southern Sweden however, the Näck is replaced by the Bäckahäst, a similar monster. Originating in Skåne, this creature appears as a pale white horse (although this isn’t set in stone and some artists portray it as black) but otherwise resembles the Näck in most aspects, sometimes the two terms are even used as synonyms. But there are some regional differences. Interestingly, the Bäckahäst seems less dangerous than the more traditional Kelpie-like creatures. There are stories of these beings being tamed simply by putting a bridle on them, although they could also be forced into submission by using iron and steel. Once tamed, the creature could be used for ploughing or other agricultural activities which it excelled at because it needed neither rest nor food.
The name ‘Bäckahäst’ translate roughly to ‘stream horse’ or ‘brook horse’. The creature is also related to the Sjörå from northern Sweden.
Tumblr media
Egerkrans’ popular modern book ‘Nordiska Väsen’ describes the Bäckahäst as having a mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth and claims that it has a particular fondness for human children, preferring them over other prey.
Interestingly, according to Höök, an old Swedish tradition claims that Bäckahäst is only able to hurt unwashed people. Clean people who have recently bathed cannot be harmed by the monster. Supposedly, this is because supernatural monsters were traditionally associated with filth and a lack of hygiene. Being clean and hygienic would hold evil at bay, and you can’t really blame people for believing in that superstition because many stories of evil spirits at the time were associated with real diseases. If illnesses were the work of evil monsters and personal hygiene was an effective tool against illness, it only makes sense that proper hygiene was thought to also keep evil spirits at bay.

I was surprised that I could barely find any footage from Lisas sagoshow, a Swedish children's show from 2005-2006. It used to be a popular show and kept getting reruns for years on SVT:s channels.
Lisas sagoshow (it's interesting they didn't name her Saga…) was created by Lars In de Betou and Anders Lundin who had made similar children's shows before (and after) for SVT. It was basically a talk show where various fairy tale characters (played by Johan Ulveson, Anneli Martini, Andreas Nilsson, Jan Åström, Lars In de Betou, Jessica Sandén, Anastasios Soulis, Claudia Galli, Ann Petrén and Per Svensson among others) were guests, and talked about how the story really went (the truth in their eyes so to speak) but also discussions with filmed clips and music videos. There were also silly Bellman jokes and competitions were Anders Lundin tried his best at answering questions about fairy tales. A total of 18 episodes were produced.
The music video in this post is from episode 16 which is about German fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin and a Swedish variant called The Girl Who Was Able to Spin Gold from Clay and Long Straw.

LA / Växa
Tumblr media
Växa July 8 - July 30th Opening Reception: Saturday July 8th, 7 -10pm
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles is pleased to present Växa, a group exhibition of work by  artists from Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Iran. Växa is the Swedish word for growth. It can be biological growth, like when plants grow or how an artificial intelligence expands on the internet. It can also be personal growth, or how a person can grow; possibly beyond the limits of this realm.
Each of the artists approaches growth individually as a subject or concept which translates across mediums such as video, performance, sand drawings, painting and sculpture. This creates new exchanges between the works, which with common threads reach out to each other, forming new connections.
The exhibition includes the artists Emm Berring, Arngrimur Borgthorsson, Maja Gade, Johan Lundin, Bahareh Mirhadinezhadfard, Ina Nian, and Maria Norrman. They are members of Galleri CC, a non-commercial, artist-run gallery located in Malmö, Sweden.
The exhibition is part of the ScandiLA exchange program between Swedish run project spaces and Los Angeles run art spaces. Earlier this summer artists from Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles have exhibited in Galleri CC in Sweden. For more information on our exchange, check us out on Instagram @scandila_exchange

In Every Mirror She's Black
In Every Mirror She's Black by Lolá Ákínmádé Åkerström
Tumblr media
Thanks to the publisher for providing me with this eARC on NetGalley.
I went into this book interested in the premise but hesitant, not really knowing what to expect, and I finished this book with mixed feelings and a lot of questions.
Here's the spoiler-free premise: Three Black women find themselves in Sweden for different reasons and experience various struggles adjusting to life there. Kemi is a Nigerian American at the top of her game as a marketing executive but hopeless when it comes to romantic relationships with men. When she's personally recruited to be the head of Diversity & Inclusion for a top marketing company -- in Sweden -- she hesitantly accepts, feeling like she might need a change of pace both professionally and personally. Brittany-Rae is an American of Jamaican descent who, after a short-lived modeling career, is a flight attendant. She finds herself inexplicably drawn to a man from her flight who is obsessed with her -- despite the fact that she's already in a long-term relationship. Muna is a Somalian refugee who has been granted asylum in Sweden. She is considering becoming an accountant and is hopeful that she will be granted citizenship in five years. All three women's journeys are connected to one man: Johan "Jonny" von Lundin. And all three will have to reconcile their expectations versus reality while navigating being Black in Sweden.
I liked that this novel was written from the three women's perspectives, and I thought that was appropriate. Their stories were so different that the main reason I kept reading was to see how they would converge. (Spoiler alert: they didn't, not really. Kemi meets the other two women separately, and there's literally only one point in the book where they're all together. But at no point is their connection to Jonny and each other really explored. And that was disappointing.)
I have to say that I did connect with the women. I was interested in how things would unfold for them, and I was rooting for them. But I didn't feel like I knew them that well. With Kemi, for example, I was really surprised at her judgmental outbursts. With Brittany, though I was initially really into the whirlwind with Jonny, her story seemed kind of empty besides him. Maybe that was the point because I just wanted so much more for her. And poor Muna. It's easy to say she had the saddest story of all, but they're all sad actually. Muna's story is just filled with the most tragedy and trauma.
I read another review asserting that the plot was lacking, and I agree to an extent. It doesn't feel like it while reading because it's easy to get caught up in that particular chapter and because of the continuous shifting to other characters, but looking back now that I've finished, the plot does seem rather bare. I'm okay with it because I think the point was to show how they fared in Sweden and you don't need that may things happening to get that. BUT the ending was so abrupt that I don't feel like I know what's in store for any of these women. Only one woman's story concludes and technically, we're making an assumption with that one too. And even though this book is about the women, Jonny is basically the glue so I need to know more about him, especially after the revelations in the last chapters.
Though the timelines got a bit tricky at points, there were a few surprises which helped me remain engaged, but I have so many questions about the end. I think this book should've either had an epilogue (my favorite) or been maybe one or two chapters longer. In any case, I'm pretty glad I read it and I feel like it's given me a lot to think about, but I don't know that I love it just yet. This is a solid 3.5 stars for me because of the abrupt ending, the Kemi, Brittany, and Muna's stories never really coming together, and a slight lack of character development.

IN EVERY MIRROR SHE'S BLACK
Tumblr media
Neither Muna Saheed, Brittany-Rae Johnson, nor Kemi Adeyemi ever envisioned themselves living in Sweden’s capital—a city, Kemi muses, so magnetic that “if Stockholm was a man and she’d met him in a nightclub, she would have propelled herself right away to ask him to dance.” And though each hails from different backgrounds—Kemi is a young Nigerian American advertising executive quickly rising up the professional ranks; Brittany’s a disillusioned Jamaican American model-turned–flight attendant; and Muna’s a traumatized Somali refugee—they share a vital trait: Each, in Swedish society, is marked as a Black woman and foreign transplant before anything else. Each, too, is linked to Johan “Jonny” von Lundin, the CEO of von Lundin Marketing and seemingly a manifestation of Sweden’s status quo—racially, culturally, and economically. In three interlocking narratives that eventually draw the women into closer orbit, each fights to carve a path within insular Swedish society. Kemi, lured to von Lundin Marketing for a position as a director of global diversity, must continually prove herself to her colleagues amid entrenched stereotypes of Black and American women. As her budding relationship with Jonny grows serious, Brittany grapples with the isolating, classist milieu he lives within. Meanwhile, Muna, who cleans the von Lundin offices, tries to stitch together a makeshift family to replace the one she’s lost. As the women contend with Swedish language, norms, and expectations, it becomes clear that as long as the interests of Black women remain subservient to White feminism, each must construct her own life template and determine whether its personal sacrifices are worthwhile. Åkerström paints an admirably rich portrait of a particular culture—its nuances, norms, and idiosyncrasies—raising important questions of prejudice, racial bias, agency, and belonging. Her characters, however, can feel predictable, and her writing, especially in romance scenes, often resorts to clichés.

Instabox raises $90 million led by EQT Ventures to transform last-mile delivery
Last-mile delivery solutions set to transform e-commerce logistics, as consumers form new habits during the pandemic and online shopping anticipated to reach new heights Consumers and merchants more environmentally conscious, so a consolidation of deliveries is transforming logistics, allowing for a hyperlocal fulfillment network that brings efficiency gains for all stakeholders Instabox will use the funding to optimise frictionless last-mile logistics services across European territories, with a sustainability focus
Instabox, a next-gen technology company transforming last-mile deliveries for e-commerce, today announces a $90 million Series B round led by EQT Ventures. Instabox makes parcel delivery faster, more sustainable, and efficient, looking to revolutionise the industry with solutions such as fossil fuel-free locker deliveries and the newly launched completely emission-free bike delivery service Instabikes. The funding will be used to further invest in technology that will enhance the value-chain for customers and merchants, plus expansion outside of Sweden.
The global parcels market was worth almost $430bn in 2019, a significant increase from $380bn the year previously, showing an already huge market opportunity now with unprecedented acceleration. Instabox offers fast, hassle-free delivery across its locations in Sweden — with a maximum of six hours between the merchant and the consumer — through its smart locker network, striving to revolutionise last-mile delivery.
The technology platform provides the team with real-time, end-to-end tracking of all deliveries, allowing for optimisation at each step of the way. Efficiently consolidating deliveries through a hyper-local fulfillment network brings not only speed, convenience, and cost benefits, but also creates sustainable delivery alternatives for consumers and merchants alike.
Founded in 2015 by Alexis Priftis, Staffan Gabrielsson, and Johan Lundin, the idea was originally to build an API for physical goods. Realising the difficulty of creating a new player in an ecosystem with century-old market leaders, the team started with e-commerce and approached a well-known Swedish pharmacy to deliver its packages with a same-day service to its eight smart lockers in Stockholm. In less than 15 minutes, the team had its first order. Emails from customers amazed by the speed and convenience of delivery followed. The need from consumers was obvious and so Instabox was born.
Today Instabox is the largest and fastest growing last-mile logistics startup in Sweden, growing by over 300% annually and delivering more than one million parcels each month, with over two million users across the country. Norway and Denmark are also seeing rapid growth, and plans for new markets are in development.
Alexis, CEO and co-founder at Instabox says: “The shipping industry consists of ancient postal companies using fossil fuels and fossil tech – which is why we’re super-excited about this new partnership with EQT Ventures. The new funding will allow us to take our super fast, hassle-free and fossil fuel-free shipping to millions more consumers across Europe and spark a renaissance in online shopping, just as we have done in Sweden.”
Ashley Lundström, Partner at EQT Ventures added: “Instabox is bringing tech DNA and customer centricity to one of the largest and oldest industries in the economy, and the market feedback is crystal clear in their fantastic growth. It’s a great partnership whereby we can bring our expertise to match their hunger and passion. We can’t wait to work with Alexis and team on this important mission.”
About InstaboxInstabox is a Swedish logistics startup that provides lightning quick, hassle-free and fossil-free e-commerce deliveries. Launched in 2015 by founders Alexis Priftis, Staffan Gabrielsson and Johan Lundin, the service has been used by millions of Swedes shopping from merchants such as H&M, Ikea, Apotea and Boozt. The company is operating more than 1,000 automated parcel machines in Sweden, Denmark and Norway and has consistently grown by more than 300% per year since its start, making it one of the fastest growing startups in Europe.
