Mary Morstan reading The Sign of the Four and seeing the passages where Watson was professing her love to her despite the fact that her version of it was watching Holmes and Watson gaze into each other’s eyes lovingly and sneak off on their own then living together again afterwards and having very little contact with her again, connecting the dots and realising she was a plot device.

Couple
865 words / Prompt: Imperfect
“We’re not—” John begins, but realises the futility of saying it again.
“You’re a lucky man.” Hopkins winks at him. “I’d make a play for him myself, but he’s obviously taken.”
He watches her walk away while he stands at the bar, waiting for another pint. She’s just the kind of woman he once would have hit on. A fun flirtation.
Now he doesn’t have the energy. And he’s wondering when that happened.
Sherlock is watching him.
He should be used to it by now. People always assume they’re a couple, and really, he doesn’t mind so much. He’s stopped saying he’s not gay because it’s misleading, and he would rather be honest. But it’s nobody’s fucking business who he is.
Sherlock must know. God, they’ve known each other for years, lived together for months now, since he and Rosie moved back. They’re practically co-parenting, and often exchange the same weary look that only the parents of a toddler can wear.
But Sherlock looks sad, he thinks. If John is honest with himself, he’s a bit worried that Sherlock is tired of the John-and-Rosie show, the trail of destruction Rosie leaves everywhere she toddles. The cases always used to bring them together, and now, even if they have a babysitter, John’s often too exhausted to go out with him.
Even this, a night out with the Yarders, Rosie at home with Mrs Hudson, is less fun than John had hoped. Sherlock doesn’t care for pub nights, but he tags along because John presses him to be more social.
He moves towards Sherlock, who’s sitting on the periphery of the noisy group. People don’t socialise with him much. Even the women who look at him with appreciation give up after a brief exchange. Sherlock can manage social occasions when necessary, but he’s clearly wishing he were somewhere else.
He slides into the seat opposite. “I’m glad you came.”
“Why?” Sherlock gives him a sharp look. “So I could watch Lestrade’s team get pissed?”
“No, I’m glad because… I like being with you.”
Sherlock’s eyebrows rise. He gives an amused huff. “You live with me.”
“Yeah, I do. But at home there’s always some mess to clean up or Rosie to deal with. I’m sorry, I know this isn’t your favourite thing.”
“I don’t mind.” His mouth curves into a smile. “I like being with you, too.”
John nods, takes a swallow of beer. “Stella was just making the usual assumption. We look like a couple. And I was wondering, are we?”
“Are we a couple?” Sherlock’s face does something complicated: surprise, discomfort, and then careful indifference. “People are idiots.”
“I don’t care about people. I care about you. Does it bother you?”
“Why would it bother me?”
“Because you don’t… I know you care about me and Rosie, but you don’t do…” The word is on the tip of John’s tongue, but he’s looking into Sherlock’s eyes, feeling completely obvious.
“Romance,” Sherlock says. “It’s a medieval construct, John, an idealisation of a reality that is often messy and contentious. People fall in love and marry; they run headlong into disappointment and divorce. I abhor the idea that we must put on blinders and pretend everything is perfect. It’s not, and never has been.”
John feels his heart sink a bit. “Yeah, you’re right.” He touches the side of his pint glass, watches the condensation run down.
He’s thinking about his own failed marriage. He’d loved the idea of Mary, an escape from the past, the possibility of a future with a person who loved him. He’d built an idealised life in his head, and it hadn’t taken long for him to realise how mistaken he’d been. The night Mary died, he’d planned to talk with her, tell her what he’d realised about himself. He didn’t know where that would take them, but it had to be said. He’d only delayed because of Sherlock’s text.
“Love,” Sherlock continues, “has nothing to do with romance. It’s not perfect. It’s a decision, one we keep making because it’s important.”
Their eyes meet. John is looking up into Sherlock’s face, remembering when he said, we might all just be human. “Important. To you?”
“Yes.”
The group is suddenly louder, laughing and jeering at some remark. No one is looking at him and Sherlock.
Those grey eyes are still gazing at him.
“Love is important, John. I know I don’t often express sentiment, but I do feel it. I do love you.”
At the look on John’s face, Sherlock’s smile turns to something sadder.
“I adore you and Rosie, and I love the messiness of living with you. I don’t want a perfect life. I want you. I want us.”
“So, you’re saying… you want us... to be a couple?”
“We already are, John. What that means is up to us. Do you want more than what we have?”
“God, yes.” The words are out of his mouth before he thinks them. “I do. Want you. If you…?”
“Yes.” Sherlock is smiling now, a full, bright smile that practically lights up the room.
John leans closer. “I love you too, Sherlock.”
The kiss is messy and imperfect. And glorious. Nobody’s watching.

Notes: We’re pretending courthouse weddings were a thing back in this time period
PART ONE LINKED HERE
__________________________________________________________________________
Your marriage to William James Moriarty was a secret well-kept until a snowy winter day in December.
It had been a simple courthouse wedding. His family had been there. Albert and Louis as witnesses. But the rest of his little ‘entourage’ had shown up in celebration as well. James Bonde and Sebastian Moran had shown up with bottles of wine to celebrate what they said was “a day that they thought would never come.”
Fred Porlock had been sweet and gifted you a bouquet of daffodils. He had told you later that they represent new beginnings, and he wanted to welcome you to their little family.
It took all your strength not to burst into tears right at that moment.
You hadn’t even worn a wedding dress, for heaven's sake! Instead, you wore a simple white blouse with beige trousers because you didn’t want to purchase much less tailor white ones. William had worn his regular brown suit and red tie.
Oh, how your mother would’ve had your head had she found out. How improper you were!
You didn’t even take a proper honeymoon persay. William had instead surprised you with a trip back to Egypt to visit the locals of your latest dig. You hadn’t been on an excavation in ages, and they were more than happy to welcome you and your new husband with open arms.
Husband…
You were officially married. No longer a Holmes and no longer tied to your family.
You were free.
Well… as free as a woman could be, that is.
All that was left was to tell your parents and brothers.
The aforementioned secret marriage was kept a secret for approximately thirteen months before it got out. In fact, you managed to keep it a secret up until William asked if he could break the news to your family over Christmas dinner.
He asked you over breakfast around a week before Christmas Day. You had moved into his estate soon after the marriage was finalized.
“Might I ask you a question?” He asked politely, and you looked up from your ham and eggs, raising an eyebrow as you did so.
“Sure.” You said as you swallowed your mouthful and cleared your throat.
“How do you feel about telling your parents about our marriage?” At this, you choke on your inhale and proceed to cough until you almost feel lightheaded.
William—used to your dramatic reactions by now—sits patiently as you try to gain some semblance of control over your body.
“What brought this up?” You demand, and he shrugs, taking a sip of his tea.
“It’s been over a year now. Don’t you think it’s time to tell them?” You look down at your hands, fisted in your shirt, and grit your teeth, mulling it over.
He was right… it had been over a year since you went no contact with your family save for Sherlock. Of course, he relayed messages from them to you. But you never responded besides telling them to sod off.
At least Sherlock understood where you were coming from and didn’t push the issue too much. Perhaps then he would know why you had kept your marriage a secret until now?
So… with that in mind… you agree, and William sends out invites to Sherlock, Mycroft, and your parents that day. You also send out an invitation to John and Mary and their new baby girl as moral support.
Sherlock responds almost immediately by phoning William and enthusiastically saying he’d be delighted to come to the Moriarty estate for dinner. Mycroft responds via phone the next day, confirming his and your parents' attendance at this growing Christmas party.
The day of the surprise comes all too quickly.
You dress that day in a white blouse, a bold, crimson suit coat, and matching trousers. Just as you’re buttoning your blouse, you hear a knock on your bedroom door.
“Come in!” You call as you finish the last button and turn to see William closing the door behind him.
“Are you ready?” He asks, and you shake your head almost immediately.
“I never am when it comes to my parents.” You say honestly, and he offers a smile that you like to think is reserved just for you. It crinkles the corners of his eyes and curls his lips rather attractively. You smile back and then head to the bathroom connected to your bed chambers for your jewelry box.
It was William’s wedding present to you. A beautiful cherry wood box that contained jewelry you had collected over the years. Most of it was gifts from the locals you had gone on expeditions to.
But…
There was one piece of jewelry that was not a gift to them.
And that was your wedding band.
It was a plain gold band, nothing too extravagant. Just the way you wanted it. And while it was simple and nondescript, you only wore it if you were going to events with William as his wife. He wore a matching one for the same reasons. And he slid his onto his ring finger just as you did the same for yours. Then, your husband extends a hand.
“Shall we go downstairs to greet your family? Sherlock is already in the parlor, and we are expecting everyone else soon enough.”
Your parents arrive just as it’s beginning to snow outside.
Mycroft is watching disapprovingly as you coo over baby Clara, John, and Mary’s baby girl. She’s almost a year old and already starting to crawl and toddle about. You could practically smell his disapproval of your outfit, but you paid him no mind. Once this announcement is done with, you never have to speak to him again.
Your parents burst into the parlor, spooking you and Clara. The baby girl starts to whimper, so you hand her back to Mary and go to greet your parents.
“Oh, dearest, couldn’t you wear the Christmas dress we purchased for you this year?” Your mother says immediately as you approach, and your face sours.
“Well, hello to you too, Mother.” You grumble but give her a hug nonetheless. Your father extends his hand, and you shake it. Luckily, it was your right hand, so you simply kept your left with the ring in your trouser pocket.
“If I might interrupt,” Comes William’s smooth voice, and you jump. You hadn't heard him come up behind you. “Dinner is served.” He finishes and ushers everyone to the dining room. He offers a comforting smile, and you reach out boldly to squeeze his hand.
He doesn’t pull away. At least not until you reach the dining room and have to separate to sit with your respective families.
Dinner was brought out, and just before everyone dug in, William stood and tapped his spoon against his wine glass.
“Before everyone tucks in, we have an announcement to make.” He says, making eye contact with you, and you realize very quickly what he is doing.
It’s time.
Your heart starts thundering like horses in your veins, and you hear blood roaring in your ears. But you get up and make your way around the table to his side and take his hand just as he says,
“I suppose I should say my wife and I have an announcement to make.”
It’s silent for a beat. Then two.
Then noise.
Your mother promptly bursts into tears. Whether out of happiness or disappointment, you have no idea. Your father grew red in the face and nearly started shouting before he remembered his manners. Mycroft simply sits back in his seat, stunned into silence. Sherlock’s face broke into a brilliant grin.
“I knew it!” He crowed and slammed his hand down on the table happily.
You stand awkwardly as you wait for the noise to die down. William doesn’t let go of your hand the entire time. But… eventually… your parents get their emotions under control.
“Absolutely not! I will not have you associating with someone as stained a reputation as the Moriartys!” Your father bellows, and you hold back a flinch. It wasn’t often he got this angry.  And, of course, you knew what “stained reputation” your father was talking about. The burning of the Moriarty estate back when they were mere children had been quite the scandal. You remembered hearing about it when you were but a tiny tot.
“You asked that I marry. I did. So now you have no right to judge whom I court, much less marry. I expect my dowry is still in your hands? And that you’ll keep your promise?” You say quickly, curtly, emotionlessly. You didn’t have the patience for his antics right now. He wanted you to marry in order to fund your excavations but didn’t want you to marry certain people? Where was the logic in that? And your family was all about logic.
“Please, dearest, think about what you’ve done! To marry into the Moriarty family is to stain our family name!” Your mother pleads, but you just roll your eyes.
“I don’t see you chastising Sherlock about his choice of friends.” You snap back and very nearly leave right then and there.
William is the only thing keeping you here. You can feel the tears burning as they threaten to fall. You just wanted your family to be happy for you. Was that too much to ask?
“That’s different!” Your father all but shouts, and you watch your husband raise an eyebrow.
“Pray tell me how it is any different?” He says, and you shiver at his frosty tone of voice.
“She’s a woman! That’s reason enough!” Your mother blubbers, dabbing at her falling tears with a handkerchief. Now, it’s William’s turn to roll his eyes. He takes a moment, entwining your fingers together as he looks at the ceiling.
“Your daughter is perfectly capable of marrying whom she wishes. This is precisely why we didn’t say anything when we married nearly thirteen months ago.”
That sentence sends your father into another shouting fit.
“Thirteen months?!” He roars, and William smirks, letting go of your hand in order to lean both palms on the table.
“Yes, quite right. And you will listen closely to my next words.” He said smoothly, and your parents both went silent. Mycroft still has yet to say anything, and Sherlock is simply sitting back in his chair with a shit-eating grin on his face.
William leans back once again to take your hand.
“You will fulfill your promise to your daughter. And hand over her dowry. Though we have little need for the money. But imagine the scandal that would erupt if you didn’t?” Your mother swallows audibly, and your father glares at your husband. He looks back cooly, not backing down.
In the end, William wins the little starring contest, and your father averts his eyes.
“Fine.” He growls, and William smiles,
“I’m glad we could come to an understanding. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I am going to go comfort my wife.” He says and gently turns you around to head for the dining room doors.
“Wait, Liam.” Sherlock’s voice breaks through your raging emotions, and you stop, turning to face the middle child of the Holmes family. Your husband turns and looks at him,
“Yes?” Sherlock stands, that same smile on his face as he studies the two of you. “Was your marriage the only announcement you had to make?” He asks innocently, and you glare at him.
Of course, he knew already.
William hums briefly before his lips curled in a devious grin,
“Oh yes, I almost forgot.” He says and puts a hand on the small of your back.
“We are expecting.” He says and leaves your brothers to deal with your dramatic parents once again.

What the fuck do you MEAN Ron Kamonohashi has the blood of both Sherlock Holmes and William James Moriarty.
HE'S THEIR DESCENDANT?!?
I'm sure they're gonna give us a different explanation but as far as I'm concerned, Ron is their love child and SherLiam is canon now
I need a fic where specifically the Sherlock Holmes and William Moriarty from Moriarty the Patriot are in a modern au and have to deal with raising the little shit that is Ron Kamonohashi. Dare I say detective genius dad and criminal genius dad with their detective/criminal feral child.
Edit:
No but could you IMAGINE the chaos of three eccentric geniuses in one house, we got Ron Kamonohashi in his teenage years probably absolutely hawking down a bag of black sugar syrup at top speed while William is trying to pry it out of his jaw like you do with an unruly cat that's eating something it shouldn't be, Sherlock's in the background watching this unfold like "just be glad he's not doing drugs or something" to which William would probably point out, Sherlock's smoking habit isn't any better
Meanwhile William's side of the family are arguably equally as insane as Sherlock and Liam so they're just a horde of weirdly rich crazy uncles that take Ron out on questionable adventures, Sherlock's side of the family aka John, Mary and Ms. Hudson is relatively normal in comparison but still dote on Ron - Mycroft repeatedly says that he can't believe his little brother is now responsible for taking care of a child, pretends he doesn't give a shit and yet somehow always ends up visiting his nephew.
Sherlock is still a free-lance private detective/consultant for the police force who takes cases whenever they come around, and when Ron asks him why he's usually home he jokes around that he's a kept man/housewife because William was rich when he married him, to which Liam laughs and asks if he even knows how to boil water without burning it -
It can be up to you whether or not William was or is in crime or not, I can imagine in a modern au he could've been the leader of an organized crime group for whatever reason, eventually decided to get out etc. etc.
And then Ron still meets Toto and brings home his cop boyfriend to meet his batshit crazy parents and one of them is a former CRIME LORD LMAO
Toto is able to withstand the sheer level of crazy that is Ron's family, obviously cause it's Toto
John Watson takes a liking to Toto. Gee I wonder why, it couldn't be because he sympathizes with being the detective partner of an eccentric genius could it

Calm
This is a sequel of sorts to a ficlet I wrote last year, to be found here, but this stands well on its own as well.
---------
Sherlock paces. And paces. And paces.
His shoes squeak on the linoleum floor. The lights flicker.
He stops, glares. “How can you be so calm?”
John raises his eyes from his book and looks at Sherlock over the rim of his reading glasses. “I’m not, really.”
“You’re reading a bloody novel!”
John sighs and puts the book down. “Was reading, from the looks of it,” he mutters, then gets up and catches both of Sherlock’s hands in his. “Look. I know you’re nervous, but you have to pace yourself a bit. These things usually take hours, and working yourself into a nervous frenzy ten minutes in won’t help anyone.”
Sherlock snorts. Nervous. He’s not nervous.
He’s bloody terrified out of his wits. And John should be too, damn him.
“John. Our daughter is having a baby. How can you be so nonchalant?”
“Because she’s young and healthy and in the care of people who deliver babies every day,” John says, steering Sherlock towards the snack machine.
“But none of those mothers are Rosie, and none of those babies are ours!”
“I am fully aware of that, love,” John says, calmly and efficiently frisking Sherlock’s various pockets for his chip and pin card. “Here, have some Cadbury’s.” He presses the chocolate bar into Sherlock’s hands, then gets a Mars bar for himself.
“How can you eat at this moment?”
“Because I’m hungry, and like I said, this might take hours yet. I won’t spare Rosie one single contraction if I go hungry until she’s done,” John says mildly and returns to his seat.
Sherlock follows, sitting down heavily next to John. “But what if our little girl takes after her mother? Rosie’s birth was so quick we didn’t even get Mary to the hospital in time.”
John smiles, looking at Sherlock fondly. “I think she did that on purpose. She wanted you to deliver her, not some doctor.”
Sherlock shudders as he remembers that night. How scared he was. How ambivalent he felt helping a person he hated so much through something so intimate. How miraculous it was, to hold his little baby Watson for the first time.
It’s odd, to think back on that moment now. To a time before she was his daughter. That there was a time in her life when she wasn’t his. That there was a time in his life when he wasn’t anyone’s.
John nudges him. “What?”
Sherlock shakes his head. “Nothing.” But he takes John’s hand and laces their fingers together, feeling the reassuring click as their wedding rings bump against each other.
John just gives him a look. After twenty years of marriage, John is very good at telling when Sherlock is bullshitting, and he’s even better at calling him on it.
Sherlock looks in the direction of the delivery room, where his little girl is having a little girl of her very own. Where his daughter is becoming a mother, when she never had one.
“Do you sometimes wonder, what might have been?” he asks quietly, without looking at John. “If our girl had ever had a mother?”
John says nothing for a moment, but he’s rubbing his thumb over Sherlock’s wedding ring, probably an unconscious gesture, but a welcome one. “I… don’t think that was ever an option,” John finally says, obviously picking his words very carefully. “I think Mary gave her all she had to give. She carried her, gave birth to her, loved her for a bit. But Mary wasn’t the type to go the distance. To be there for her, no matter what. To be there for us, no matter what.” John gives Sherlock a significant look. “You don’t become a parent by contributing to the gene pool. You know this. You become a parent by showing up for them and sticking around, even when they barf on your shoes and blame you for every pimple on their face.”
Sherlock swallows, still after so many years unsure how he got so lucky.
“Not lucky,” John says quietly, and Sherlock wonders if he said the thought aloud, but maybe John just knows him really well. “This,” he holds up their joined hands, “has nothing to do with luck. This is commitment, and effort, and force of will, and sometimes, sheer bloody-minded stubbornness.”
“God knows we’ve got that in spades,” Sherlock says, giving John a small smile, squeezing John’s hand in silent gratitude.
“That little girl will be the most thick-headed human being ever to walk the Earth,” John answers, grinning now, a proud grandfather to be. “Imagine, your stubbornness, mine, and Rosie’s combined.”
“No wonder this is taking so long,” Sherlock says.
John laughs, and whatever melancholy came over Sherlock dissolves with the familiar, soothing sound of John’s happiness.
It’s difficult to imagine, now. That it was ever any different. That there was a time when Sherlock was unsure of his place, at John’s side, in Rosie’s life. But John is right. They didn’t get here by luck. They put in the work, all three of them. They’re a family not by blood, but by choice. By vow. By force of will.
John is eating his Mars bar with relish. “Relax,” he says, leaning his head against Sherlock’s shoulder as they settle in to wait. “Everything will be fine. You’ll see.”
Sherlock rests his cheek against John’s hair and inhales the soothing scent of his husband’s shampoo and caramel. “Can I have a bite of your Mars bar?”
John’s laughter is as sweet as the caramel.
Sherlock closes his eyes and smiles as he feels calm finally return. Soon they’ll have another little girl to spoil, to protect, to be there for, to argue with. A new life, a new journey.
And Sherlock can’t wait to begin.

so funny how season 1-3 of bbc sherlock is like: amazing masterpiece flaunting spectacular yes slow burn homoerotic platonic romance comedy drama detective show
and then s4 bbc sherlock is like: sherlock holmes is a drug addict
johns wife sacrifices herself to save sherlock and now his life has incurred a value and he must constantly try to fill that void of her but he’s suicidal because john will never forgive him for “killing her” even though john had considered cheating on her but sherlock’s sister shows up in disguise as a client and shows him that his life does matter and now him and john have a child to raise so they team up for one last time to visit the holmes’ secret sister in the most top secret penitentiary in the world run by moriarty who is alive but not really and then she traps them in a psychological suicide game with mycroft where they are forced to: murder, open up, make mycroft say “i love you” to his brother and make sherlock say “i love you” to john’s reflection in the window, torturing poor molly hooper. and finally, freeing sherlock’s sister from their traumatising childhood home in her mind and uncovering the buried body of his childhood best friend who she murdered by exposing his deep deep desire to love and be loved (platonically) and once all that is over sherlock and john move back in to 221b together and be co-parents. just as mary’s ghost (and ms. hudson) wanted all along!!!

So, I was thinking about different fandoms and the fics that I love. What makes a good, satisfying fan fic? I realize it has 100% to do with the canon.
Take BBC Sherlock. I struggle so much with AUs where their beginnings are different. Sherlock is an astronaut, assigned to work with scientist John. (This is an example, not a dig at any specific fic). I can't. I can't. I realize BBC Sherlock is also an AU from Doyle, but BBC Sherlock and John are so fucking tied to "A Study In Pink" and John handing his phone to Sherlock that everything else seems false. Fun premise, but not the Sherlock and John I know.
A satisfying Johnlock fan fic needs to change the ending of the BBC canon. To think of these two men, who love each other so much, just continuing their parallel existences, never becoming anything more than crime-fighting buds, is just. . . it doesn't fit. It doesn't fit the show. It doesn't fit the characters Moffit and Gatiss created, even if they decided to not make it happen (as a special 'fuck you' to their fans). It's heartbreaking.
My favorite fics are fixits -- many of them deal with the aftermath of Euros and Mary, or some do "canon intercepts" and deal with Seasons 3 and 4 differently. Still, anything but John and Sherlock raising Rosie together as partners/lovers/husbands in 221B with Mrs. Hudson downstairs feels like a lie. (Some canon intercepts write out Rosie completely.)
If I had to write sequels to BBC canon, I'd pick "Drawn to Stars" by @totallysilvergirl or "Never Turn Your Back on the Sea” by @discordantwords . There's a thousand other ones, but those ring the most true to me.
"Heartstopper" fics don't have a lot of room to mess with the ending. Anything other than Charlie and Nick happily growing old together is so far out of canon and out of character that it doesn't even seem like it's worth exploring. There are a handful of ones that have one character or the other dying, but mostly, we understand right away that Charlie and Nick are endgame. We are 100% aligned with canon and creator on this.
Anything that isn't true to this ending rings as false as anything that isn't true to Sherlock's beginning. Fun to read, but not our characters.
With Nick and Charlie being so young in canon, their beginnings are so much malleable. Sherlock and John are tied to that lab. Nick and Charlie? not so much. They meet in grammar school. They meet in University. They meet after a hot hookup at a club in their 20s. They meet after broken marriages to Imogen and Ben. They meet during Nick's rugby career or as fellow teachers. They meet at gyms, at animal rescues, at psychiatric hospitals. They are single parents, University professors, rock star drummers, hot shot authors and academics. Their beginning isn't fixed. But the end always is.
I have so many favorites but I just re-read "Lavender Fields" and I think it's a perfect Nick and Charlie meeting up in their 30s fics. There's a ton of University fics too.
I haven't read nearly as many fics from other fandoms, so I don't know their quirks. I'm finding that fandoms that don't have a m/m pairing are hard to find a lot of fics for. (That's a whole 'nother post). But other m/m fandoms seem to have canon-compliant extra scenes. (Wanna see Achilles and Patroclus get freaky in a tent somewhere? Here ya go. That being said, there's one about Achilles waiting for Patroclus in the Underworld that breaks. my. damn. heart.)
Anyways, I need to do a serious look-through of other fandoms to see how this plays out.
I should add the links here to the fics I mention, just because.

May Prompts (25) Intuition
Tumblr media
The Luckiest Girl in the World (chapter 25)
Summary: Rosie's protective foursome are visiting her in Paris, Mycroft shows off his poshness, and they all meet Timothy and his parents at a well-chosen location.
Twenty-Five Years Old
The years in Paris went by too fast, and suddenly I had turned twenty-five and was graduating from uni. Sadly, both mine and Timothy’s graduation ceremonies were on the same evening, but we all had plans to meet the next day. I’ll admit that I had mixed emotions about that. My parents and uncles were to meet Timothy and his parents, and I couldn’t help thinking of all the different directions that meeting could go.
“It’ll be fine, love,” Timothy assured me. “Mum and Dad are over the moon to meet your celeb family, and I’m sure The Fab Four will behave for a few hours.”
“Ha! My intuition tells me otherwise. I wouldn’t put it past Papa to give some snarky remarks if he’s annoyed with your mother’s lipstick or your dad’s shoelaces,” I sighed.
“You know John won’t allow that, Ro,” Timothy laughed. “And your uncles are less inclined to cause any damage, I think. Relax.”
***
I had only met the Browns once before. Marie was a secondary school teacher, loved the royal family passionately, royals in general actually, and she was also a decent tennis player. Daniel was a business solicitor, loved his singing, and was quite a wine connoisseur.
“They’re both perfect conversation partners for Mycroft,” Papa informed me after I’d met them. He can share gossip from the palace with her and show off his wine cellar to Brown senior.”
Dad tried to shush him, but his efforts were nonsensical, and I was inclined to agree.
***
Whenever uncle Myc visited Paris, he stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, and for my graduation dinner, we ate at one of the hotel’s restaurants, Le Cinq. His Poshness, as Papa called him, moved through the restaurant after the maître d’ like he owned the place. Uncle’s three-piece suit had never been more appropriate. The rest of us were dressed up as well. Papa even wore a tie, which I hadn’t seen on him since my uncles’ wedding.
The food was arranged like tiny artworks, and I felt like a vandal ruining them with the cutlery. Once the first bite reached my taste buds however, all regrets were forgotten. Each dish surpassed the other visually, and with different textures and surprising combinations of flavours. Every wine was perfectly matched with the food, and even uncle Greg, who was more of a beer lover, admitted that it was quite good, which earned him an exasperated sigh from his husband.
“How’s the job search going?” Dad asked after the third course was devoured.
“I’m expecting a few answers over the next weeks. Hopefully, something turns up,” I said.
I actually had high hopes, having already been summoned to an interview when I was returning to London the following week. Papa gave me a thoughtful look and shifted his gaze towards his brother who lifted an eyebrow just the tiniest bit, which made me sigh and swallow my remark with some excellent chardonnay.
***
To Marie’s delight, we were meeting at Versailles the next day. Neither of us wanted to take the guided tour but preferred to walk in the gigantic garden.
“Much easier to escape if the conversation gets tedious,” Papa teased.
“Brother mine,” uncle Myc warned, more out of habit than an actual rebuke.
We had agreed to meet on the balustrade where it would be easier to spot each other. I could see that Marie was fidgety and excited, while Daniel seemed quite composed.
“Better at hiding it,” Dad remarked, which earned him an incredulous look from me and a fond chuckle from Papa.
“Is this mind reading business contagious?” I sighed and walked towards Timothy and his parents.
***
“The Fab Four are behaving,” Timothy stated. “A bit disappointing really.”
“Try refreshing,” I retorted dryly.
“Do you think Sherlock would mind if I asked him to deduce some of the people here?” Marie asked in a hushed voice, which Papa had no problem hearing.
“I don’t mind at all, Marie,” Papa interrupted with a bow. “Anyone in particular?”
And with that, Marie and Papa stuck their heads together to conspire. Daniel and Timothy looked amused, while the rest of us rolled our eyes, though I must admit it was the perfect ice breaker, and I was relieved that my intuition about Papa’s behaviour had been wrong.

May Prompts (12)
Day 11 here. Day 13 here.
Family
It’s funny the degree to which having a real family shifted his priorities.
Maybe not funny, but surprising. At least to him.
His entire life, family had felt like an obligation more than anything else. His mother meant well, but she didn’t really know how to parent. His dad was a drunk arsehole. And the least said about Harry the better.
No wonder he’d ended up fighting in a war across the world.
Obligation was exactly how Mary had felt at the end. But despite his spiral after her death (and the resulting piss poor parenting that took all the worst elements from his own parents style), his love for Rosie had been fierce and unwavering. She hadn’t been an obligation, but a gift he didn’t deserve. She got him through.
Well, her and Sherlock. Once John finally let himself acknowledge that Sherlock had become like family himself, things slowly got easier. John was happier. Suddenly, family was love.
But, that can complicate things at times. Balancing the wants and needs of the two members of his family against each other and his own.
Sherlock has been here with him at the hospital all day. After Sherlock first arrived this morning, they spent about a half hour talking about what happened. The thief, the chase, John’s fall. Not surprising, really, given their choice of profession. Although perhaps a bit of a wake up call. John isn’t as young as he used to be, and now he has a child to consider.
John had also hoped to talk about the intruder and see if Sherlock had any theories. He promptly fell asleep instead. And slept for over six hours. Understandable maybe, but embarrassing all the same.
Sherlock was still there when he woke up. John is fairly certain the man never left his bedside. And for twenty minutes, they have been discussing the intruder—the evidence gathered so far (limited, much to Sherlock’s hilarious annoyance) and theories on motives. It’s wonderful and John hates to cut it short, but he knows he must.
Molly would likely agree to pick up Rosie from nursery. Mrs. Hudson too. But they’ve never done it before and, under the circumstances, that will scare Rosie. Right now her comfort takes precedence over John’s and Sherlock’s wants and needs.
Sherlock is currently ranting about security measures in the hospital. To be honest, John stopped paying attention to the details a couple minutes ago. He opens his mouth to interrupt, but is beaten to the punch when Sherlock stops abruptly and stands up.
“Sorry, John. I need to head to the nursery now. If I pick up Rosie a bit early, there will be time for a short visit here for. The timing will be perfect for her tea.” He puts on his coat. “The cafeteria has cut fruit, goldfish, yogurt, and some rather boring pasta dishes that she’ll probably like. It should be sufficient.”
John finds himself smiling broadly. “You are going to get Rosie.”
Sherlock rolls his eyes and the sight warms John’s insides. “Of course, I am getting Rosie. This will be a very stressful time for little Watson. After our visit here, I will take her home and put her to bed. Molly has agreed to spend the night at your house again so I can leave.”
“Oh yes, of course,” John says. “You’ll be wanting to get back to Baker street.”
Sherlock looks at John like he’s the biggest idiot in the world. It’s ridiculous how much John loves that look. “I’m coming back here, John. Why would I go to Baker Street?” He shakes his head and makes his way to the door. “Do sleep now, so we can continue working tonight. Gerald has managed to finagle his way on to the case, so the Yard may actually prove helpful. He will be coming by at 9 to go over what little evidence they have.” He pauses. “Don’t tell Gerald I said he might be useful.”
John chuckles. “I believe visiting hours end at 8.”
“That doesn’t apply to you,” Sherlock says with a dismissive wave. John doesn’t doubt it.
And with that, Sherlock is gone. But, soon to return with Rosie in tow. John smiles to himself. This family thing is pretty great. He doesn’t deserve her. Doesn’t deserve them.
Despite his injuries, he’s one lucky bastard.

mayprompts2024, #23 and 24 apology and imperfect
Tumblr media
Two prompts today because I could not write anything yesterday.
White Pony Tattoo - Part Four (apology and imperfect)
One and a half day later, John once again found himself in front of White Pony Tattoo. He was brimmig with anticipation.
John had been able to swap today’s shift at the clinic to follow Sherlock’s order to be here at 2 PM sharp. John had been extra careful to arrive in time, taking an early bus and then loitering the spare seventeen minutes in the vicinity, looking at shop windows that did not really interest him.
Somehow, John did not want to come across as eager as he actually was to attend his appointment with Sherlock and would not like to be seen oscillating on the pavement before the front door. Although - thinking about this - it would likely be futile anyway trying to hide something from Sherlock’s uncanny habit of x-raying people with his colour changing eyes, of seeing right into John’s brain.
John had been wondering how Sherlock had known (deduced as the mesmerizing tattooist had called it) about the cover-up he had been about to request. John also was still a bit annoyed about Sherlock calling the desired design of an army soldier in full combat gear boring. When John had served in the army, nothing had been boring and he fondly remembered his time in the RAMC whenever he looked at photographs taken at this time.
++++
“I knew you’d come back.” Sherlock stood behind the counter, waiting in a relaxed posture.
Sherlock said it in a cool voice, matter-of-factly, not in a know-it-all or haughty diction. Yet, it rankled John. Feeling transparent.
“I actually think you owe me an apology.” John blurted.
“Do you now. Interesting. What for?” Sherlock stepped around the counter.
“An army soldier in combat is not boring.” There, I’ve said it, John thought. It felt good.
Sherlock raised a quizzical eye brow that reminded John of a parent chiding their child for uttering an unreasonable wish and it irked him even more.
“I don’t deal in apologies, John. Even if there had been something I should have apologized for, I wouldn’t.”
“I don’t like unapologetic people.” Mary was anapologetic, too.
Sherlock shrugged, totally uncaring about John’s confrontational stance. “Well, it was you who returned here, apparently about to accept my offer of tattooing a rising phoenix on your arm.” Sherlock pointed his index finger at the shop’s sign where the demands no arguing and no boring designs had been written.
“You have to accept the whole package which includes me, obviously. If you can’t deal with it, you may leave any time. It’s your decision.”
Sherlock leant his back casually against the counter, crossing his arms in front of his chest which showed off today’s bespoke dress shirt he wore. Its classy dove grey colour made Sherlock’s eyes gleam like multifaceted gemstones.
Of course, John did not want to leave which Sherlock must already know and since there was no other way, John swallowed the wave of recalcitrant pride that washed over him.
“Yes, okay, I accept.” John couldn’t avoid a tiny bit of teeth-gnashing, havinf to give in like this. Fuck you he mouthed under his breath.
“No, maybe later.” Sherlock deadpanned.
John’s face turned beet-red. As so often when felt cornered and embarrassed about something avoidable he had done, John attacked.
“I didn’t say that out loud now, did I?” But I feel tempted right now, dammit, John thought, hoping that his face would not give this away, as well. If it did, Sherlock mercifully did not mention it.
“No,” Sherlock said instead, chuckling, “but I can lip-read fuck you easily enough.”
Oh great, mind-reader and lip-reader. “Is there nothing I can hide from you?”
“Little. But don’t mind, practically everybody can’t.”
“That’s not a solace at all.”
“Come on, take a seat,” Sherlock motioned to a small coffee table with two armchairs, “let’s talk about your tattoo. Can I offer you some tea?”
Sitting down with a huff, John nodded. “With pleasure.”
Sherlock vanished behind the purple curtain and returned with a tea tray, laden with an expensive-looking porcelain tea set and a small plate with fresh scones. John’s mood immediately brightened upon the delicacies.
“Oh, this looks delicious. Thank you.” John took one scone.
“You have to thank Mrs Hudson, the landlady. She prepared all of this.”
Sherlock started to pour the tea and John was struck by the realization that Sherlock had to be of upper-class origin given the way he dressed, spoke and handled the tea. Transfixed, John watched Sherlock’s hands moving, like performing a dance of their own. There was a silver ring on every finger of Sherlock’s right hand. John identified a tattoo gun, a violin and one ring was made of tiny human skulls, like beads on a string.
Odd, how such a posh boy became a tattoo artist. Even a very famous one.
Taking a bite, John stated. “You’re doing great as an artist. I saw some of your works on the internet, lots of famous people that you have inked.”
“Yes, well, I don’t care about their fame. I’m interested in creating the perfect tattoo for my clients, ones that express what they feel or care about. Who they are. An image of their inner self, captured in ink on their outer skin, forever.”
John hummed. “This is very poetic!”
“Yes, yes! Excatly, John!” Sherlock jumped up and paced the room, gesticulating wildly.
“This is what I do! My ink is art, the poetry of lines, the flowing rhymes of colour, a whole story in shades of black. Everybody who is half-way talented can learn the perfect tattooing technique. But without the right design, without the firm connection to my client’s history and personality, or if you believe in the concept of a soul, then any tattoo will always be imperfect. Do you understand?”
“Yes, indeed, I do!” John exclaimed excitedly. “When I was performing surgery, of course, it was about saving lives and limbs.  But I always strived for more. I wanted them to heal perfectly. Like you said, everyone can learn to do sutures that hold the skin together. But sutures that don’t leave scars are very difficult. The desire to achieve perfection is not alien to me.”
Sherlock had calmed down enough to sit down.
“And this is why I rejected the soldier design your wanted. I never said that a soldier in army gear is boring per se, but it would be boring on your skin because you are so much more than this. You’ve fought in the army, saved lives, you’ve survived being shot and nearly dying from the infection. Therefore, the perfect design for you is the phoenix rising from the flames. You have been reborn in the blazing heat of Ahghanistan. Or was it Iraq?”
The sudden question startled John. “Aghanistan.” He answered automatically. “But please, Sherlock, allow me one thing, one question.”
“Which is?”
“How the everlasting fuck have you know, erm, deduced all of this about me?”
Sherlock laughed, full of delight.

Let Me Have This
1554 words / Prompt: Do-Over
She’s determined to take it all away from him. Every damn thing. All the little things.
He wonders why he didn’t notice it happening. The little smirks when she reads his blog. The comments when he mentions Sherlock, insignificant but biting. It’s been systematic, and he’s let it happen.
None of it seemed worth arguing about. When he met her, he’d already mourned and tried so many times to put it away, to think of it as something that he would endure. Something terrible, but that’s how life is, the good and the bad, and you still have to go on living. He survived.
So he hadnt argued; that would have taken too much energy, and he never had enough of that in those days.
She’d been wonderful, really, at the beginning. She’d gone to the grave with him, stood by him, let him mourn. She’d been patient, lovingly patient, urging him back into life.
“Are you never going to eat Thai food again?” she would ask.
Or: “Why do you keep this old jumper with the burn holes? It’s unwearable.”
Or: “We don’t need to take the newspaper. You can read it online.”
And gradually, she had replaced every damn thing with a new thing. New jumpers, Korean food. A different brand of tea. Romantic films. Different news programs.
Even his old, stained mug. “It was chipped,” she said.
None of it was unreasonable, taken as individual actions. But all together it made his old life seem flawed, as if he hadn’t done anything right until he met her.
He did notice. But he’d thought she was something good in his life, a new beginning, a person who knew what she wanted. It was flattering to be pursued.
Every relationship requires a partner who gives in, who is the more reasonable one, the one who lets things go. He saw that in his parents, his mother headstrong and insistent, his father calm and accepting. Yes, dear.
That was how they were, before. Sherlock led, John followed. Sherlock had strops and broke crockery and said awful things sometimes, and John smoothed it all over. Or when he finally couldn’t, he would have his own strop, tell Sherlock to stop—
You machine.
He hadn’t seen that coming, either. His role was reining Sherlock in, pulling him back from the edge. That’s what he’d thought was happening. As it turns out, he was wrong.
Maybe that’s why he can’t be the one to say, Stop it. Let me have this.
He doesn’t deserve a life now because he didn’t protect Sherlock when it really mattered. He let him go over the edge, fall—
Mary is a do-over. He was punishing himself, and she appeared, offering him a chance at something better. Letting himself be loved, cared for. She’s competent, not nostalgic.
It’s an insidious trap, a carefully laid one. Where she could have let him mourn, let him remember who he was when he loved Sherlock— she has tried to reshape all his memories. Sherlock was a child, she seems to say; you were a fool to make yourself responsible for him. He had you under his thumb because he really was a sociopath. He didn’t care about you. He didn’t love you. I’m the best thing that could have happened to you.
And now, she’s taken the last thing.
I like him. She said that in the cab, coming home. Home, to the flat she picked out and decorated, where there isn’t even one tiny piece of John Watson.
She’d seen his anger, his grief. She’d been outraged, on his behalf. Do you have any idea what you’ve done to him? His anger was right. She’d affirmed it.
But afterwards she smiled like the cat who got the cream. As if it had all gone according to plan. She likes Sherlock. She’s going to talk him around. And once again, John will be the unreasonable one.
And he sees how it will go. She’ll take credit for bringing them back together. It will be the three of them now. And of the two of them, Sherlock will find Mary the more interesting one, the one who really gets him. They will bond, and John will be the one they joke about. The third wheel. Poor John. He can see her tagging along on cases, texting Sherlock, giggling with him about private jokes.
She’ll let him have Sherlock, as long as it’s clear that she owns John now.
Let me have this.
If he wants it, he’s going to have to take it back. He’s going to have to say no to Mary, if he wants Sherlock back. He’s still angry, but now that he sees what’s happening, he can’t unsee it. He’ll never be happy in the life she’s prepared for him, free from all the clutter and disarray of life with Sherlock. She’ll keep him in their tidy flat and let him out to go play with Sherlock. And if he ever starts to crave that life again, she’ll find a way to separate him from it.
It’s after midnight and he’s standing outside of 221B. He’s already mentally rehearsed several versions of an apology when his phone buzzes.
Are you coming up? SH
He smiles.
Oscillation on the pavement. An affaire de coeur? SH
Sherlock still signs his texts, and this is oddly comforting. At least something hasn’t changed.
Climbing the stairs, he thinks about the last time he went out and closed the door behind him, never to return. He’s been back once to see Mrs Hudson, but never up these stairs.
The door is open, and he stands on the threshold, taking in everything that two years haven’t changed. The flat looks just as it did on the last day he stood here. It’s like time travel.
But he’s still Future John, the one who grieved, who hit his best friend when he returned as John had begged him to do. The one with regrets.
And Sherlock is different too. He stands at the window, looking down at the street as if he’s expecting someone. His posture is taut, careful.
“I hope… I’m not intruding.”
Sherlock turns and faces him. The split lip has healed, but there is caution in those grey eyes. John never wants to see that look again, not directed at him.
“Come in, John.”
He does, glancing at his old chair, then staring at his own feet, words having deserted him. Sherlock gestures for him to sit, but he feels like a guest in what used to be his home, and it’s painful. He remains standing.
“Something is wrong,” Sherlock says. “You’ve quarrelled with Mary.”
“No.” He closes his eyes. “She’s fine. It’s me. I’ve made a mistake.”
Sherlock steps closer, cocking his head and silently deducing him. “A mistake?”
I’ve proposed to a woman I don’t know because I couldn’t go on without you. I hit my best friend because I couldn’t bear…
He looks up at Sherlock, tears filling his eyes. “Can you forgive me?”
The look on Sherlock’s face is surprise. “John, you need not apologise. If there is to be an apology, it should come from me. I should not have approached you as I did.”
“Can we… just…” He sniffs. “Could we pretend that the last few days haven’t happened yet? You’re back, and I’m—”
“You’re asking for… I believe it’s called a do over?”
He laughs through his tears. “Yes, that’s what I want.”
Sherlock smiles. “Where do we begin?”
“Let’s say I’m not at dinner, not proposing to Mary. You’re not wearing a silly fake moustache—”
“You’ve shaved yours off.”
“Yeah, you were right. So. I don’t have a moustache, and I’ve come over to have a look up here, because… I’m about to take a step that feels irrevocable, one I wouldn’t be taking if you were alive.”
Now Sherlock looks puzzled, but he doesn’t speak.
“My therapist has been bugging me to say something… to you. Something I wished I’d said… before. And I couldn’t say after. But I need to say now.”
Lips parted, Sherlock is frowning. “Say… what?”
He closes his eyes. “You were the best. The best person I’ve known. The best friend. You saved my life, gave meaning to what was left of it. And I… I love you. I don’t care that you were married to your work, or that you despise sentiment. I love you, and I wish I’d said it before.”
Laying a hand on Sherlock’s heart, he feels it beating, alive. “I want to come back. Come home. Live with you.”
“But… Mary?”
“A mistake. And you’ve just given me the impossible. The thing I asked for. Please, will you forgive me?”
Sherlock is silent. He stares over John’s shoulder, blinking as if that genius brain has gone offline.
“Sherlock?”
The pale eyes focus on him. “You want to come home? Here? You love me?”
“Yes. I know you don’t—”
“Just to be clear, when you say love —”
John puts his arms around him. “This.”
As he looks up, expecting to see Sherlock frowning, the most extraordinary thing happens.
There are tears in Sherlock’s eyes, and he’s about to—
When the kiss ends, Sherlock holds him pressed against his chest. “Just to be clear,” he says. “I love you too.”

Rosie (and some parentlock) angst pt.2!!
Though I think its slightly less angsty than the first part
- As a teenager, shes a menace. When she got to the s3/4 part of Johns blog, she started writing little "did you miss me?" on walls or sticky notes in diffrent parts of the house. Both John and Sherlock were finding them for over a month every day.
- Shes quiet. Whatever she is doing, she knows how to do it as silently as possible. It's useful when one of your parents needs just a small hint to know exactly what you're doing.
- She has trouble with defining relationships. I think we all know why.
- Imagine little Rosie having family tree assignment at school. At first it was all fun, drawing the tree, herself, John and... Mary? But she never even got the chance to meet her. She was nothing more than the person who gave birth to her. Even dad didn't seem to miss her that much over time...
- ... So she drew dad and Sherlock. She actually never met any of her grandparents, so she just drew mrs. Hudson above them. Then she drew aunt Molly and uncle Lestrade and uncle Mycroft, connected to Sherlock. Done :)
- People had a lot of questions about the family tree. Teachers tried to be nice to her, but they didn't seem to understand. Rosie herself didn't get it. People have mommies and daddies, some have two daddies, others have only one mommy, but why does she have a daddy and Sherlock?
- Kids weren't as nice tho. They asked too many questions and little Rosamund had no answers. Dad didn't tell her much. He tried at first, but gave up quickly. With time Rosie realized it might be just as difficult for him to describe their family as it is for her.
- After some time she learned the word "gay" and that dad definitely wasn't that word. Why is he so mad about that?
- Sherlock never realized that kids don't take being called an idiot after every inconvenience as well as the adults.
- When Rosie's hurt, John overreacts and Sherlock brushes it off. She doesn't expect much, but it feels like John only cares when there's a chance he'll lose her and Sherlock just never does.
- Female rage is when Rosie discovers who and how treated was Eurus.
- Sherlock visits his sister a lot after s4. Rosie feels a little less hatred for him when he offers to start bringing her along.
- Everyone in this household has trust issues.
- Everyone in this household also has an unhealthy relationship with eating, sleep, themself, diffrent substances and people around them.
Would anyone be interested in teenage Rosie fanfics? I'm so obssesed with this angsty kid that I might actually write something
