John Shelby x Reader

A/N: I was supposed to finally finish chapter 5 of New Endings (I promise it’s almost there) but it didn’t really work out the way I wanted and I'm stuck on such a little part so instead I wrote this. Don’t expect too much because it’s just something I suddenly came up with and idk what it is. I missed writing and making moodboards so much so I really wanted to make and (FINALLY) post something again!

Warnings: none (bad plot maybe)

Word count: 1454

A crowd had filled the room, people were happily chatting away or creating new connections with many of the important figures that were invited.

She had lost John to one of those conversations and even though she felt sorry for him, she finally got the chance to get herself a new drink. Both of them dreaded the event that Tommy had organized but how much they wanted to decline the invitation, they couldn’t. Or well, weren’t allowed to. He was John’s brother after all and according to Tommy it would be good for business.

The location was fancy and only the best of the best was good enough. It showed how much had changed in these years, climbing the ladder of social positions and rising above anyone whoever doubted them.

She liked the new kind of freedom she and John had gained but if it was for them there was no need for all the extravaganza and forced gatherings, something his older brother thought different of.

While she sipped on her newly gotten glass of champagne, she let her eyes scan over the crowd. The expensive dresses and tailor made suits were everywhere and she had to remind herself that, even though it almost made her laugh, she and John belonged there too now. She was wearing a beautiful sparkly dress that might’ve been a bit too overpriced and John’s suit was far from being cheap as well. This is our life now, five words that left his mouth so easily that he had to rethink them once he heard them himself.

“Are you enjoying yourself?” Ada joined her, her gloved hand holding a glass of champagne. “I guess.” She looked at the woman next to her. “You guess?” A small smirk appeared on her lips, knowing the actual answer already. “I don’t.” She confessed as she chuckled softly. “I can tell.” Ada chuckled as she pointed out the obvious and sipped on her drink.

“Everyone is just forcing themselves to be nice it seems.” She looked at the crowd again, hoping to find a sign of John. “John was nice enough to let you get out of it.” Her sister in law noticed. “Or I might’ve just seen a chance to get out it and took it.” She giggled, while she was not being able to find her husband.

Ada shook her head, chuckling. “Knowing him, he won’t appreciate it.” (Y/N) looked at her, shrugging. “And knowing him, you know very well that he’d do the same to me.”

“He definitely would.” Ada admitted as they both chuckled. “Speaking of the devil.” She nodded her head towards John, who was coming their way. “Where did you go?” He wondered as he joined both women, gently resting his hand on (Y/N)'s back. “Seemed you had a very interesting conversation so I decided to occupy myself with something else.”

“Occupy yourself with getting drunk, perhaps?” He looked at her, a grin tugging on his lips. “I’m not drunk but I do wish I was.” She sighed jokingly. “Me too.” He confessed while he got a stern look from Ada. “Oh c’mon Ada, you can’t tell me you enjoy this, do you?”

“You know how important this is f-“ She was interrupted by a sigh, a low gravely voice followed after. “Ada, Tommy wants you to meet someone.” Arthur announced. “Behave, please.” She warned John before making her way to Tommy, Arthur following her.

“I’ve been behaving myself whole fuckin’ night. I’m not some fuckin’ menace now, am I?” He muttered as he finished his drink. “Well…” (Y/N) started as he looked at her. “Oh shut up.” He smirked, squeezing her waist before kissing her cheek. “Maybe we should wander around a bit, hm? Discover this overly fancy place. It’s big enough to find some privacy.”

She looked up at him, smiling. “I’d love to but I think we can’t sneak away so easily.” He raised his eyebrows at her words. “And why do you think that?” His hand cupped her cheek. “Your brother likes to keep control at all times and it seems like he really wants you here.” She explained, knowing how strict he could be. John shook his head. “Just play along, darling.” His thumb stroked her cheek before he put his hand on her forehead.

“What are you doing?” Her eyes scanned his face, confused by what he was doing. “Seems like you’re pretty warm, aren’t you?” A small smile tugged on her lips, understanding where this was going. “I’m not feeling that well, no.”

“I think it’s better if you get some fresh air.” He took her champagne, put his fingers in the glass and splattered the liquid on her face. “John!” She gasped in shock. “I mean you’re sweating. Must be a fever.” He smirked as he put both of their glasses away and took her hand. “Come on.”

She followed him as he made his way to his brothers and sister, the feeling of excitement creeping up on her. “Uhm... Tom, sorry for interrupting but we’re leaving." While Tommy paused his conversation, Ada turned and gave both of them an annoyed look." "And why's that?" The older brother wondered. "(Y/N) is not feeling well.” (Y/N) nodded as she looked at him. “Yes, I’m so sorry. I really need some rest.” She held onto John’s arm while he gently stroked her hand.

Tommy nodded slowly as he looked at her before turning his attention to John. “Will you come back?” He asked John. “I don’t know. Depends on how she’s feeling. I can’t just leave her alone.” He squeezed her hand, which made her try out her best fake cough. “Of course you can’t.” Ada answered sarcastically. “Well, take care (Y/N) and come back whenever you can.” Tommy answered shortly before turning back to his conversation.

John’s arm wrapped around her waist as he escorted her out of the room. “Well aren’t you an amazing actress? I mean the fake cough and everything.” He whispered in her ear as he closed the heavy door behind them with a big grin on his face. “You aren’t too bad yourself.” She chuckled while he dabbed her face dry with his sleeve. “I was very believable, hm?” He smirked. “Very.” She agreed as she grinned at him. He took her hand and he led her up the big stairs. “Where are we going?” She wondered curiously. “I don’t know yet.”

While they wandered trough the halls, John tried to open various doors until he found one that was unlocked. He ushered her inside and closed it behind her. She walked up to the big window that had a view over the gardens, they were gently touched by the moonlight. “Look at this.” She breathed out as she looked at the perfectly designed gardens with hundreds of beautiful flowers. John walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “It’s very pretty.” Her hands rested on his arms as silence fell over them, enjoying the fact they were finally alone.

“Can you promise me something?” She spoke up after she let many thoughts run trough her mind. “Of course, love.” He said as he waited for her to continue. “Never change.” Her fingertips ran over his arm. “I wouldn’t dare.” He smiled while he kissed the side of her head. “I understand that this is our life now but I just hope it won’t affect us in a negative way.” She confessed, unsure about the new situations they found theirselves in time after time.

“It hasn’t so far, has it? Or do you mean with a negative way that we don’t own a house like this just yet?” He joked, earning a chuckle from her. “I still prefer our house over places like this.” She told him as she thought about their house on the countryside. “Me too.” John admitted. “But, I have to admit that seeing you wearing dresses like this is something I can get used to.” He smirked as he pressed a kiss in her neck. “Then I must admit that this suit is doing something to me as well.” She giggled as she felt his lips in her neck again.

“Hm…” He let go of her and turned her around so she was facing him. He gently put his hand on her forehead. “I think I found the cause of your temperature rising.” He smirked. “It’s me.”

She laughed. “Of course it’s you. You always have that effect on me.” She grinned while she felt his arms around her body. Hers found their way around his neck with ease. “Maybe I can cure your fever.” He smirked as he leaned in and gently pressed his lips against hers.

What do you say to a little boy who asks if he's going to see his mother (a woman he can't remember) again?

One of Finn's schoolmates lost his grandpa and the boy was telling the rest about Heaven and how one day he was going to see the old man again.

But Finn isn't so sure. Heaven is for good people and he knows the Shelbys are not.

Polly looks at him and smiles.

"If you continue being a good kid, Finn, then you're going to see her if that's what you want."

"You think I'm going to be in Heaven? Like Mr. Henderson?"

"All Shelbys go to Heaven, Finn. We're special. If we want to go to a place, people open the fucking door for us. Including God."

The kid smiles and hugs his aunt before leaving the room. Polly lits a cigarette and pours herself a glass of whiskey. He's still too young.

Shelbys aren't welcome in Heaven. God is more powerful than Thomas and Polly together. The matriarch smiles thinking about it. She can't say it to a 10 years old boy, but there's only one truth about her and her family:

All Shelbys go to Hell.

All of them. Even Finn. It's the curse of the surname.

HIM AND I

Taking a drag from his cigar, John intently stared at his girlfriend from afar. She was standing by the bar, carelessly swirling the wine in her glass as she tolerated a man’s poor attempt at flirting. She seemed bored, and a little bit annoyed, but at some point she turned towards the man, a fake smile plastered on her face.

He couldn’t deny that the mere thought of another man getting close to her was enough to make his blood boil, but he knew better than to cause a scene. She could handle herself, she had proved it on many occasions, and he wouldn’t intervene unless it was necessary.

And he trusted her. It was him and her, after all. It had always been him and her, ever since they were kids, running barefoot around Small Heath with cap-guns in their pockets. She was there with him when he had no money and no place in the world, and she had stayed while he was making a name for himself. Now he had made it, and he knew that it wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been there by his side.

They had that crazy kind of love, the one that makes people go to any extent in order to shield the one that they love. They would kill for one another, without a second thought.

They were each other’s ride or die, they would always be. She would always be there to get him out of trouble - or to get in trouble with him - and to patch him up when he got into a fight. She would always be there to talk some sense into him when he lost control, and to have his back. She would ride with him until the very end.

He was going to marry that woman. He was going to put a ring on her finger, so that everyone would know that she was his, and he was hers. He was going to love her and protect her to the end of his days.

Even if it meant to beat up some persistent guy, from time to time. She’d be angry, at first, but he knew it wouldn’t take long for her to forgive him. But just as John was about to approach them, he caught a glimpse of mischief in (Y/n)’s eyes. She walked up to him, and before he could say anything, she took his face in her hands and places her lips on his. Despite the initial surprise, he promptly wrapped an arm around her waist, his hand resting on her lower back as he deepened the kiss. The taste of red wine on her tongue, along with the scent of her perfume, was dizzying, and he could already savour the moment when he would’ve taken her home.

John moved away to glance at the man at the bar, who was now uncomfortably sipping his glass of whiskey, looking anywhere but in their direction.

She was his, and he was hers.

A/N: Heaven Shelby is an OC belonging to @call-sign-shark and is Arthur Shelby's wife.

John always felt a deep connection to his brother’s wife, Heaven. When the enemy attacked him on his doorstep Christmas morning 1925, he swore he saw a blinding light around her small frame as she used all her healing powers to pry him from the cold embrace of death. Now he felt bound to protect the woman he thought of as his guardian angel. It was a vow he upheld when Arthur stole himself away from the Changrettas and everyone he cared about.

John was merely a brother doing his duty to family. However, the tenuous thread between friendship and something more suddenly snapped when Heaven confided she wished to stay longer. She needed time to herself after Arthur’s deceit which had been too much for their short marriage to bear. When Heaven realized they were crossing a line she warned, "This isn't right," and John had to agree.

Arthur was his flesh and blood after all, but he couldn't help the overwhelming feeling that his loyalties were shifting despite himself. Every moment spent in Heaven's intoxicating company convinced him they were meant for one another. Each morning with the children a glimpse of what their life together could be. When Arthur returned one day high on snow, angry and violent, it was all John needed to act swiftly and mercilessly.

He tortured himself with the memory of his fateful decision every day for years to come as he sat rotting in his prison cell without so much as a letter from the woman he was so enchanted with long ago. He was only certain of one thing when he thought of atonement for Arthur’s murder. He had attempted to bend the will of the heavens and fallen into the depths of hell in the process. He would spend the rest of his life praying to be forgiven for stealing God's most cherished creature from his own kin.

Summary: (Y/N) gets a rather pleasant surprise on the morning of her birthday, one that she can’t quite say she’s surprised by…or maybe she is.

A knocking on the door of her home roused (Y/N) from the comfortable position she was sitting in on the couch. It was still rather early; too early for anyone to come knocking. Unless…

“Happy birthday, love.”

“John Shelby, what’s happened to you? You’re bleeding,” she disregarded her boyfriend’s festive greeting, her eyes on his nose, which was bleeding and already bruised.

“Well I was on my way here to come and see you, but then…”

“You know what…I don’t even want to know what happened,” she cut him off before he could explain his injuries further, “just come inside.”

She stepped aside as she finished speaking, allowing him to walk inside. We waited for her as she shut the door behind them, standing in the middle of her entryway like he had not a clue of what to do next.

“You really don’t want to hear what happened? I promise it’s nothing too bad,” he tried again to get her to listen to the story behind his injuries.

“No, John, I feel like I’ve heard them all at this point,” she waved him off again, “besides, your too bad and my too bad are two different too bads,” she added, spinning around to face him after she locked the door.

“But it’s actually nothing bad this time,” he persisted.

(Y/N) found it quite odd that he really wanted to tell her the story, but she just couldn’t budge from her stance. Like she’d said, she’d heard, and been through, one too many at this point, and honestly felt like she could go into the hospital and work as a nurse from all of the bandaging up she’d done in the three years that she’s known John and the Shelby brothers.

“Maybe some other time,” she decided to slightly concede, hoping that it’ll get him past his desire for story time. “Right now I need to get you bandaged up,” she then said, giving him a once over only to find that his hands were scraped up and bleeding as well.

“But I promise it’ll have you laughing,” he wasn’t giving it up so easily.

“You’re bleeding on my carpet, John,” she insisted, a bit more strictness seeping into her tone as she noticed the splotches of blood that were now covering her ornate, green carpet…one that she loved dearly.

“Shit…sorry, love,” he apologized sheepishly, finally dropping the persistence he previously held so that he could follow her into the kitchen area. He sat down on one of the dining chairs and waited for her to grab everything she needed to clean up his wounds.

(Y/N) got right to work with cleaning up his nose and making sure that the scrapes on it were only superficial. The same could be said about those on his hands, but she bandaged them just to make sure. “That should do it,” she announced, setting the remainder of the gause down on the table before she looked up at him. She had to bite her bottom lip to stop from smiling as she saw the soft grin that was present on his face.

“Always takin’ care of me, darlin’,” he mumbled, his eyes feeling heavy as he looked at her with adoration. It was still early in the morning after all, and he was about ready to go back to sleep.

“Who else would if not me?” she jokingly questioned then, allowing the smile to break onto her face as she heard him laugh.

“Was I the first person to tell you happy birthday?” he asked her after a few moments passed, his eyebrows raising in intrigue.

“You were,” she answered with a nod of her head, “I don’t think anyone else was itching to come wish me a happy birthday at…” she pause, checking the clock on the far wall, “six in the morning.”

“I was itchin’ to from the moment I woke up,” John told her, glancing down at his bandaged up hands then. “I even fell on the pavement while walkin’ over…nothin’ could’ve stopped me,” he worked in the story of how he got his injuries.

“You fell?” (Y/N) gasped, her eyes widening at his admission.

“Yeah,” he let out a breath of a chuckle, “right onto the bloody curb…got me pretty fuckin’ good if you ask me,” he added, shaking his head as heat creeped up his neck. He couldn’t help but feel slightly embarrassed as he told her the truth behind the brusies.

“Well if you ask me…I still think you look pretty handsome,” she told him, a smile full on her face.

“Pretty handsome?” he questioned her word choice in an incredulous manner, his ego now brusied along with his body.

“You know what I mean, John,” she rolled her eyes, laughing at his exaggerated expression. “You know…you’ve been here for a while now and you’ve yet to give me a birthday kiss,” she switched topics then, her eyebrows raising slightly as she hoped he caught onto what she was saying.

“I was slightly preoccupied before, dear,” he pointed out, chuckling at her suggestion.

“Well you’re not preoccupied now…” she trailed off, watching him intently.

“C’mere then,” he grinned at her, his words making her lean in closer to him. Her quickness made him grin as he happily closed the rest of the distance to match his lips to hers. A sweet kiss was shared before he pulled away just enough to whisper: “happy birthday, love.”

“Thank you, John,” she mumbled back, leaning in for another kiss before pulling away completely. They were both grinning like fools as they sat properly in their chairs once more. (Y/N) took that time to give him a once over. She couldn’t help but laugh as a thought came to mind.

“What?” John asked, wanting to know the reason behind it.

“I said that I’ve heard it all before when it came to your injury stories…now I’ve really heard it all,” she told him, making him roll his eyes this time before laughter left both of their lips.

What a memorable way to start off a birthday.

“Fuck!” John shouted a bit too loud. Frustration evident on his face.

“What’s wrong?” Y/N asks him as he stops the car on the side of the road.

“I don’t know. The car lost it’s power.” John gets out to open the hood, smoke coming off as he opens it. Waving his hands to get rid of the smoke. “I’m afraid this is gonna take a while.” He sighs while checking the engine.

Y/N gets out of the car as well. “Maybe somebody can help us out?” John looks at her. “We’re in the middle of nowhere, love.”

“I know John but I could at least try to find someone while you work on the car.” She smiles at him. He looks down at the engine and back to her. “Alright, fine.”

It’s starting to get dark when Y/N returns. John is leaning against the car, smoking a cigarette, when he sees her coming over. “I was getting worried.” He says while getting up. “Did you find someone?” He asks her.

She sighs softly. “No. Did you have any luck with the car?” John shakes his head. “No, nothing yet.”

She takes his hands in hers. “I did find something else.” He frowns “What do you mean?” “There’s this abandoned house nearby. I thought since it’s getting dar-“

John quickly cuts her off. “No Y/N, I rather walk home.” “But John, please? It’s such a lovely house! And you know it would take us hours to walk home” “No.” He says.

She places her hands on his cheeks. “Please John? Do it for me?” She kisses his lips softly. John sighs loudly. He can’t help but smile while he kisses her back. “Fine.”

(First I just wanted to post the moodboard. Then this was supposed to be just 3/4 lines because I thought it would be cute to add a little bit of a story but in the end I got carried away 🙈 )

You knew John since you were teens. But only the last year you started to live together mostly because sharing a place was cheaper. Both of you worked and you were studying as well, so splitting the expenses, really helped. But despite living under the same roof, you thought you were just friends.

But gradually that started to change. John started to prepare the breakfast for you every morning, even if he didn't understand at all what you were studying, he used to ask if you needed help. Not to mention the day he found that puppy in the streets and gave it to you, exactly on your birthday.

It was a rainy sunday that found both of you together again. Netflix, the sofa, the puppy and you two sounded good. But later you noticed that he wasn't watching the movie. His fingers were brushing your arm and you could feel his blue eyes on you. And, when you turned your head you found him staring at you. You looked at himas well. When John leaned over you, you close your eyes and when you feel his lips over yours you couldn't help but smile. Maybe that sunday afternoon, you found other way to spend your time.
