Reposted from @darrenwalker A groundbreaking exhibition “Entangled Pasts”at @royalacademyarts. Featuring an arresting installation by @tavaresstrachan “The First Supper (Galaxy Black)” in the courtyard of Burlington House (listen to the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly in the background). Bravo @axelruger @arthistorianbyday @ablackhistoryofart Sarah Lea, Prof. Cora Gilroy-Ware, Dr. Esther Chadwick on an inspiring and intelligent show!
What a gorgeous day for taking a boat ride to the ICA Watershed. John Akomfrah’s immersive six-channel video installation was incredibly moving and made me shed tears. From birth to death, are we only observing the damages made on this beautiful earth? Are we now observing the end of life of our mother planet after poisoning her? Yes, we humans caused all these damages and we have not stopped or even slowed down. (We’re only accelerating the speed.) The footages he shot were stunningly beautiful. I especially loved the rainy and the snowy scenes. Water images flow throughout the film, as if to say that water is life. And we dance and we sing. We’re beautiful too. I watched it twice in a row (thanks to a comfortable bean bag bed!), and didn’t even realize that I was watching the video for two hours. People protect what they love. Don’t we love this beautiful planet? #johnakomfrah #icaboston #icawatershed #climatechange #water (at ICA Watershed) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1NWmH6l_7y/?igshid=2jdt5j5rc0b3
Lisbonne - Jour 4.
Press Invitation @viennasecession Swipe 👉 1,2 John Akomfrah A recurrent motif in his art that connects all three works on film is water, which acts as a reservoir of recollections; in the immensity of the ocean, it also marks the scene of the colonial conquests and the transatlantic slave trade as well as contemporary migrant flows. 3,4,5 Michael E. Smith He does not finalize his works until he installs them in the exhibition setting, and many take concrete form only during this phase or even owe their existence to a moment’s inspiration. The concentration on few objects in the room creates an impression of capaciousness and emptiness - a metaphor, perhaps, for the loneliness and precariousness of human existence at large - that enhances the significance of each work and becomes an integral part of the art. Artist Dread Scott Organizes Reenactment Of 1811 Louisiana Slave Revolt : NPR https://nolachic.blog/2019/11/10/artist-dread-scott-organizes-reenactment-of-1811-louisiana-slave-revolt-npr/ Armed with pitchforks, cane knives, machetes and muskets, about 300 people dressed in period costumes, some on horseback, marched toward New Orleans as part of the second day of artist Dread Scott’s elaborate re-enactment of the 1811 German Coast slave revolt. The rebellion, considered the largest slave revolt in the nation’s history, ended with a slave-owner’s militia executing about two-dozen rebels, and placing their heads on poles as a warning to others. On Saturday, Dread Scott’s re-enactment ended with a celebration in Congo Square alongside musicians, dancers, drummers, and healers. #nolalife #slaverebellion, #filmmaker #JohnAkomfrah, #NewOrleans #SlaveRebellionReenactment, #slaverevolt, #africanamerican, #GermanCoastUprising, #nola, #Slavery, #dreadscott, #culture, #history, #SlaveRebellionReenactment, #1811, #nolablogger #neworleans #frenchquarter #melanin #blackhistory #africanhistory #blackpeople #blackness #march #freedom #riot #event #blacklivesmatter #power #reclaim (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ryQMpl2Xl/?igshid=1qzp4pefxb4pb
Sat upright a women twirled her foot gazing at the three screens with the sound of the sea pulling the audiences attention. A woman brushed a strand of hair off her face allowing the hair to gently balance on her glasses, never letting her gaze be taken off the screen. A man sat rustling a paper between his fingers, whispering softly to his female companion, she nodded. A mother and child come in and swiftly left again. The room turned red.
A lonesome figure crouched down in the corner allowing his phone light to reflect off his face as his attention was disrupted from the film screening. A slight click was heard from the doorway, a man stood with two chairs clenched in his fists. The lonesome figure from the corner moved to a seat, swinging a rather large bottle of water. The room turned black.
A few leave. A torch from a phone lit up as more left. Another, and another. Light crept in from outside the room illuminating the shadows of the figures leaving. A young child questioned its mother ‘Is it funny?’. I look up to realise the credits had been rolling.
The film starts again. A sun rise fills the screen, a man holding a coat enters and looks around. The lonesome figure sat on the seat in front turns around and smiles spreading his fingers out and leaning back to get a more relaxed position. Juxtaposing to the man next to him, crunched over watching intently.
A figure stood at the door, a deep breath, crossing his arms as the words ‘Jew’ and ‘discrimination’ were heard from the speakers. There’s a slight shuffle as an elderly man walked in front, he smiled, apologising for blocking the screen and then turns to realise he would rather retreat to a different room, and swiftly left.
Two figures sat rather closely look as one. Their shadows merge. Sounds of the sea and wind fill the room. Engulfed in darkness I look around to see relaxed figures spread across the room. They don't look like people anymore but more like shapes emerged from the darkness of the room.
