EAST HAVEN'S 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EVENT: THE WIND STORM

With the 1 year anniversary of East Haven's opening, we have decided to have an event that centers around a wind storm that is blowing it's way through town, inciting chaos where ever it goes. The event will start on January 5th at 12pm (noon) and end on January 15th at 12am (midnight). No new starters should be posted after January 10th.

You were placed into groups that are listed below. You will be expected to write with at least one character in that group that you normally do not write with. You are still free to do other threads with others in the group, but are required to at least one.

Participation for this event will be mandatory. Acceptances and checks will be held as usual. Reminder: Injuries need to be in by January 3rd*. You can find the form here. Details of this will be posted on the 5th.

Without the kids for the evening, Johnny found himself at a local bar in Fallbrook. It was karaoke night, but that didn’t mean the man was going to participate without a bit of liquid courage. He lingered at the bar, watching a group of women on the stage. It seemed that they were celebrating something with sashes across their clothes but Johnny couldn’t make out what they said from where he was standing. They weren’t that good, but Johnny didn’t judge them for that. He knew they had grand courage to even get up on the stage, even if it was the same courage he was hoping to have shortly. Johnny moved out of the way, bumping into someone as he shifted further down the bar. “Sorry, bit crowded in here tonight, huh?”

The original Pink Panther is better than I remembered!

It’s been years since I saw the original Pink Panther. I remember thinking it was alright at the time, but watching it on TCM tonight, I laughed a lot and noticed more of the craft.

A lot of modern comedy filmmakers could learn a thing or two-- nah, let’s face it, they could learn A LOT from studying what Edwards did back in the 1960s. The man had a sophisticated understanding of how to milk comedy from the visuals and camera placement as well as from the actors. A lot of newer comedies just feel cinematically unimaginative in comparison.

But I’m not here to complain about modern comedy-- I think the original PP, while considered favorably on the whole, isn’t as appreciated by most hardcore fans of the series as a whole. It has less slapstick and feels awfully close to a bedroom farce at times. 

Most significantly, Clouseau is not center-stage: the original movie is every bit an ensemble piece, deftly weaving all these characters together. Sellers definitely steals the show, but David Niven, Capucine, and Robert Wagner are no slouches either. As Johnny Depp did in the original Pirates of the Caribbean film in the 2000s, Sellers was so memorable in his supporting role that subsequent films in the series were his entirely.

However, this film has so much to offer on its own merits. The direction and casting are excellent, of course, but the script handles its several threads, subplots, and running gags with such sophistication that I have to marvel. This could have easily become convoluted but it never does.

One thing that struck me this time around was the amount of Buster Keaton influence in a few scenes. This film does a variation on the putting the bride to bed routine from Spite Marriage, as well as a few other small gags. It tickled my BK-loving heart to no end!

Anyway, this movie is wonderful. Even if there were no follow-up movies to it, I would still call it one of the best Hollywood comedies of its decade and it remains very funny to this day.

Stevie's birthday was a day that was important to Johnny. Hell, every day spent with Steive was an important day to the man. He'd still not get over the fact that they would be coming up on their official one year of marriage since his return into Kismet Harbor. So, the kids had been picked up by his father last night so that he could have some alone time with Stevie in the morning. The day would later end up with the entire family but at first - he wanted to make the morning as special as he could. Johnny had just finished up in the kitchen, the lingering smell of a variety of breakfast items made for his wife. He could never be too certain what she might want, especially with the pregnancy. Knowing both dogs would mind the food, he headed over to their bedroom, quietly walking into the room with a cup of decaf coffee, "Good morning, birthday girl."

"If it isn't my favorite sister," he grinned, knowing that the middle brother could hardly pick favorites between the two. He knew that the two sisters didn't get along well, but he had always done his best to try and keep the peace. "I'm going to miss our morning coffee together when classes start back up." They wouldn't be impossible, but the beginning of a new semester always took up more of his time as he got to know his new students. "Might have to move coffee to my office," he joked with his sister, flashing her a grin as he sat down across from her with both of their orders.

Knowing that the storm had to of rattled his friend and Stevie taking a nap while Naomi was in daycare and the twins back in school, he decided to stop by over his lunch break to give his long-time friend a visit. His knuckles rapped against the door, food from Heart and Seoul BBQ being held in a bag in his hand that wasn't being used to knock against the door, "Hey, Donny, it's Johnny," he called out, unsure if he'd open the door if he wasn't sure who it was.

"You want something to eat, drink?" Johnny kicked his boots against the step before walking into the house through the sliding door, Carter and Lola slipping by him as he stepped out of his boots. "We've arguably got too much food and drinks," he told the man, "feel good to be visiting home?"

"I'm glad no one got trapped out here," he couldn't imagine finding out that someone had been caught hiking during the wind storm. It had been difficult enough looking for his son in the hospital, let alone looking for someone in the woods of Vermont. "I've brought a handful of tools," he slung the bag over his shoulder as he shut the backseat door to his truck, "ready to get out there?" Both Lola and Carter were at his heels, happy to tag along for the adventure of cleaning up the trails.

The wait at the hospital was increasingly longer with the picking up winds, but Johnny did his best to continue to diffuse the situation between his daughter and his wife.
