Obesity-Cancer Link

A person carrying a mutation in either of the tumour suppressor proteins BRCA1 or BRCA2 is at increased risk of developing breast cancer. So too are people with obesity and diabetes. But whether obesity could exacerbate the risk in people with BRCA mutations was unknown. Recent research suggests that indeed metabolic and genetic risk can be cumulative. The image shows nuclei (blue) of milk duct cells from a person with a BRCA mutation with evidence of DNA damage shown in red. A study of such cells revealed the extent of DNA damage in BRCA mutation carriers positively correlated with body mass index. And blocking obesity related hormone signals in these cells could lessen such damage. The new findings suggest that while maintaining a low body weight is no guarantee of preventing breast cancer, addressing lifestyle, diet and metabolic health may be especially important for people already at increased genetic risk.

History: Born as a premature twin to Adam (a human) and Jolie (a mutant), the new parents joyous time was cut short when a few hours after their babies were born, a nurse came to tragically inform them that Gemma’s sibling had died. Confused, they asked how that could possibly happen, that they were fine earlier in the day. They explained to them that it looked as if their baby had been layered with crystal, the material unfortunately covering the nose and mouth and crushing several bones. It was then that Gemma’s parents realized that she had inherited the x-gene from her mother, something that prior to her, had been dormant for nearly 3 generations.

Since the incident, Gemma is given a shot everyday to suppress her powers until her parents deemed her old enough (10) to start learning how to properly maintain them.

In elementary school she meets Elijah ‘Eli’ Hardin, another mutant with the power of technopathy and who would end up becoming the best friend she always needed. They stuck by each other through thick and thin; Eli being her protector and hero and Gemma being his rock, keeping him grounded.

Throughout high school, Gemma would notice that Eli was starting to become distant with her, hanging around other mutants and beginning to spend less and less time with her. In junior year he disappears completely, causing Gemma to go to his house only to be met with his alcoholic foster parent. He tells her that he doesn’t know his whereabouts and after following a list of dead end clues, she concluded that he was gone.

Now alone once again, Gemma was desperate for a friend which unfortunately landed her in the middle of a prank orchestrated by a group of popular kids. Knowing that Eli wasn’t by her side anymore, they took full advantage of it, humiliating Gemma in front of a crowd as a petty revenge for the times Eli defended her. The prank backfired however, causing Gemma to panic and lose control of her powers. She accidentally set off an attack of crystal and sent them flying into the crowd, severely injuring those around her.

It’s later when Charles Xavier approached Gemma and her family, promising a safe haven for her and a way to properly get a hold of herself at the School For Gifted Youngsters and where she remains currently.

— She’s a vegetarian!

— She likes to practice her clown painting on Eli, along with other types of makeup and also paints his nails.

— While she’s grateful for being in Xavier’s school, she fears for the time she has to put her powers to use because she doesn’t like having the responsibility of other people’s lives in her hands.

— Her favorite painting is a watercolor by Winslow Homer, “Two Boys Watching Schooners” because it reminds her of her and Eli. Some other favorites include “Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda” (Winslow Homer), “Picking Wildflowers” (Rhonda Holmes Nicholls), and “Red Canna” (Georgia O’Keeffe).

The fact it’s like. Major celebrities can definitely make a difference by saying something. angelina jolie being open about her breast cancer risks and masectomy increased the rate of which women in the usa, uk, australia, canada, india, and parts of europe got tested for genetic risks and advocated for wider accessibility of gene testing.

They're all human I know but a lot of them may actually...qualify(?) for it now bc of their curse. One of them literally has a tail! Thermidora is actually a lobster lady, Saffron has a monster hand, Jolie has NO EYES, and Gwen and Nell have sharp teeth and odd natural skin/eyes.

Also I know I usually point out Gwen's monster like traits but what about her siblings? Has anyone ever been suspicious and skeptical of the other pastel children for their gifts?

Maybe a butler blames Maria for bewitching his lover away from him because of her siren voice. Maybe a maid spread a rumour that Lorena inherited her mother's monster genes for how else could a young girl dent a wall like that? And by accident??? Maybe the chefs are nervous about Jaime having the reverse powers of witch and is capable of controlling people after eating their food. Why else can he taste emotions!

Meanwhile Gwen simply looks scary and has a completely average-looking talent. Being crafty. Need a hand finding out what these cookies need? Gwen. Need help sewing something? Gwen.

I was thinking SGA/SG1, say Buck decided to not fight with a lawsuit. Instead he calls up an old military buddy who'd encouraged him to get a degree. Buck decides to go back again to get a degree in the archeology field. But he also becomes valuable to program due to the gene.

But then someone on Twitter mentioned Dr River Song. Maybe she takes more after her husband. She picks up Buck after Eddie announces he is leaving. She helps become an archaeologist also to annoy her husband.

Someone else on Twitter mentioned Indiana Jones...so maybe Great Uncle Jones? Buck visits him when he first moved to LA. He gets inspired to secretly get his phd, maybe he wasn't all hookups. Maybe he takes of leave of absence after his injury to go on one final adventure with Indy.

Several people said Lara Croft. I adore the Angelina Jolie version. Buck met her in Peru and became friends. Instead of becoming a firefighter he becomes her apprentice while finishing a degree. He still ends up in LA meeting the 118 during the Tsunami, he was visiting for a conference.

I don't know how to explain to people that chemistry between two actors is subjective.

Even when you and many people you know--including professional critics--feel that two particular actors have zero chemistry, the director, the casting director and the producer(s) might have felt otherwise.

Or maybe they did have chemistry--a relationship that you and critics would agree involves chemistry--during the script reading/screen testing phase, but then something went really wrong during filming (e.g., a fight between the actors), and they lost it.

Do sometimes directors see that person A and person B have no chemistry and hire/cast them anyway? Yes, because the two actors' names may be tied to the financing of the film/series. Big names bring more fans after all. Money makes the world go round.

But, my point is, that even with films that are documents of the two actors' real life courtship (e.g., Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck in Hitchcock's "Spellbound," Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in "To Have and Have Not," Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in "Woman of the Year," Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith") and thus ooze chemistry, there are still fans and critics that think otherwise.

Sometimes the studios and directors learn that two actors had chemistry--aka clicked well with the audience--after the release of a series/film. An example? Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in "Flying Down to Rio." The fans responded better to the two supporting actors (Astaire and Rogers) that had very little screen time together than to the actual stars of the film (Dolores del Rio and Gene Raymond). After that response, Hollywood studios proceeded to cast them together in nine more films. Fun fact: Astaire and Rogers briefly dated before their film careers, but it seems like their fans responded better to their chemistry than the actors themselves.

P.S. When I'm talking about chemistry here, I'm not only referring to erotic/sexual combustibility. Any duo or group of actors need to have chemistry in order to hold the audience's attention.

History

Niccolo Jeremiah Churchill was raised in Detroit. It was a broken city going bankrupt before the supernatural uprising. But, this only made the city that much more dangerous.  He was raised with two sisters in a single mother welfare family until he was twelve years old. He always thought she treated him a little different than his sisters. He was under the impression she liked them better. Nico tried to assume it was because he was a boy and she liked to play dress up and do girly things with his sisters he wasn’t into. He also tried to not take it personally. But, as time went on and he grew up it became more difficult to believe the more offish she became.

Come to find out his mother was no regular welfare case. She couldn’t seem to keep a job because she was too paranoid to leave them alone with caregivers. But, what tore his family apart in the end was the fully loaded armory she kept in the house full of children. There were weapons under the beds, in the walls, cabinets, everywhere. It was like she was preparing for a war. Child endangerment charges were the first round. The second round was his mother being found too unstable and unfit to care for them. She ended up in a state mental hospital and he and his sisters were split up in the foster system.

He was an older kid, beyond the cute years where people wanted to adopt, plus he was a troubled youth, hard to handle. He aged out and was left in a program that helped aged-out youth transition into society. But, it was a society he could never really be prepared for. His mother never told him the truth. She never told him that his father was Count Murmur, the great Duke of Hell.

He remembers her last words to him though. “If Hell comes back to burn you, burn them first.”  Nico thought about her desperate parting words often growing up. “Back” as if they’d been there to burn him before. She was a bit of a religious nut. He tried to pass it off as his lunatic mother just shouting in a crazy frenzy as she was being taken away and nothing more. That was until in his late teens his body started to change. He could hear whispers and voices others couldn’t seem to hear. He wouldn’t tell anyone afraid they would put him in an institution too, crazy like his mother. He was starting to develop gifts from his father’s genes. He still can’t control them well, nor understand them all. He’s still young and developing. He may be an adult in human years, but just a young pup for a demon and still growing.

It was these developments that lead him to investigating his mother’s history and following the trail of several demonic clues that lead him to finally believe he was a supernatural too. The voices and trumpets were one thing, but it was the day his vulture wings spread from his back he couldn’t deny it any longer. He wanted to though. He really wanted to pretend it wasn’t real. But, with all his mother’s teaching on how evil Hell was, and demons being bad, he’s got a constant struggle in himself to understand his own nature.

Personality:

Nico can be moody. Deep down he has a yearning to be useful and cares deeply about anything or anyone he becomes passionate about. He can be an overachiever and take on more than he can chew. He’s headstrong and can switch between an awkward and offish introvert, to the contrasting opposite if he’s triggered. He can be explosive with a mouth that degrades and curses like his only vocabulary comes from a four letter word dictionary and then flip around and seem quite gentlemanly. He’s highly philosophical by nature. His bad-boy exterior once had a reputation in the human school yard of Detroit, but now that he’s grown up and his demonic heritage is being discovered he seems to only have more questions than answers.  But worse, he’s struggling to keep safe, or pick sides. He avoids demons if possible scared that if discovered he’d be expected to damn humans. But, how can he? He’s human too. But, that curiosity of his missing link is getting more tempting and more tempting as time goes on. Nature versus nurture is kicking in. Nico’s moods might be hard to predict while he’s learning and changing. In general, he’s the tough guy who’s just plain scared, but tries really hard to just live a happy life.

Tries is the key word. The universe always seems against this plan.

Powers

These are verse depedent with how developed he is. He feels like he has more weakness than powers when his "Hell Radio" takes over. As a murmur he hears the frequencies of the supernatural and other realms like Hell. He can speak to ghosts, vultures and other scavenger birds. He has a way with crows.

His human side keeps him grounded. He can't teleport like most demons he knows, but he works on new ways to slip through time. He gets terrible headaches and can't always control the frequency, channel, or volume of the Hell Radio in his head. It can bring him to his knees. He does have the ability to create hallucinations. It's a typical demonic gene and one of his only favored ones. The rest seem to bring him pain, like his wings. They have a werewolf tendency to tear their way out.

There's nothing graceful about it. He also has a strong lean towards the dead and necromancy. This is all from his father's specific genes.

Count Murmur is a "Great Duke and Earl, and has thirty legions of Spirits under his command. He teaches Philosophy, and can oblige the souls of the deceased to appear before the conjurer to answer every desired question. Murmur is depicted as a soldier riding a vulture or a griffin, and wearing a ducal crown. Two of his ministers go before him making the sound of trumpets. "Murmur" in Latin means noise, whisper, murmur, and the sound of the trumpet."

This necromantic ability is an urge that always pulls at Nico. It's in him to be attracted to dead things when it's in his very nature to bring them back into this plain. Instruction is what he lacks, but he's getting there.

The push and pull of his parents' influences are two ever conflicting hubrises that never seem to settle.
