Above & Beyond’s Jono Grant Challenges Obsession Over 138 In Trance

As much as 128 is connected to house, 140 is connected to dubstep, and 150 is connected to hardstyle, 138 has always been connected to trance. However, these numbers — beats per minute, or BPM — always started out as rules and evolved into something more like guidelines later on. Except, apparently, for trance.

138 has become such a focal number in the genre that Armin van Buuren, one of trance’s foremost legends, has a song actually titled, “Who’s Afraid of 138?!” Yesterday, Jono Grant of Above & Beyond addressed the fandom’s obsession with the number:

The obsession with a single BPM number (138) is just ridiculous and misses the point. The first records we made together ranged from around 134 to 140. Yes a lot were at 138, but so what? Getting hot and sweaty specifically about 138 is proper face-palm material.

It’s unclear exactly what prompted the need to make a statement about this, but it’s brought up some apparently much-needed conversation in the community.

I heard a (hopefully non-clueless) talented DJ refer to 138 as a genre today….!

Indeed. The point is tracks from the perceived “golden era” as some would have it are at a range of tempos, and not just 138. It’s like someone decided that this was the number and it’s stuck…. but it simply never was. There was always range!

Of course BPM matters – will change what you do. But obsessing about a specific number isn’t particularly useful most of the time.

Wow!!!! After 2 days of decompressing in Seattle with some amazing beautiful #AnjunaFamily souls. It's still very hard to put into words what I experienced this past weekend at #ABGT250 at The Gorge, but now that I'm home I'm going to try. Starting my weekend Thursday at Red Rocks then ending it with the Anjuna Kitchen Sunday night was by far the most epic, magical, spiritual, and soul awakening experience of my life! I want to give a huge shout out and personal thank from the bottom of my heart ❤️ to @tonymcguinness , Paavo, @jonogrant, and everyone at @anjunabeats & @anjunadeep for a job well done!!!! 🙏🏻 After being at #ABGT150 2 years ago in Sydney for my first #GroupTherapy milestone show I never thought I could possibly have a better weekend in my life. Boy was I wrong!!!! From experiencing my first ever Red Rocks show with my brother and my AnjunaFamily! Witnessing a song being named Red Rocks by my favorite group @aboveandbeyond at Red Rocks, meeting @sevenlionsmusic who was on my flight from Denver to Seattle, driving to the Gorge and having @spencerbrownofficial @adrianalexandermusic throw down the most epic set at our campsite Friday night, to ABGT250 Saturday night and witnessing the most magical journey of Anjuna music EVER with family in a concert setting that is out of a dream world 😴 including the most epic A&B set ever put together with the perfect blend of new/old tracks plus dropping their new track called Red Rocks, to a yoga set Sunday morning that after practicing #yoga for almost 5 years now unlocked doors I never thought possible, to a Deep Party Sunday that touched my soul in a way that I can't describe with words, then ending it all with seeing such AnjunaFamily love in the Anjuna Kitchen Road Tour Surprise Set!😭💖 Life Changing! Here are a few pics that only begin to tell a story of magical explorations with people I hold dear to my 💜 I think it is so fitting that A&B's new album is called #CommonGround. This is the movement the world needs right now! We don't always have to agree on everything, but we must empower each other, we must find the common ground, we must build bridges across our differences to pursue the common good! 😊🙌🏻 (at Gorge Amphitheater)
