Design by @deoron The Aluminium Gradient chair is like high res furniture. It elaborates on the use of Aluminium in furniture design in our digital age. It was designed for, and directly laser sintered in Aluminium. Using generative design tools and new material research we basically created a lightweight aluminum foam-like structure that is engineered on a cellular level to address specific functional needs for different areas in the object. The solid cells in the design create structural strength and rigidity while the more open cells create material reduction and lightness. All within one single printing technique, creating an intricate sort of 3D transparency. - Designed by @jorislaarman - Discover more at www.pallaorodesign.com https://www.instagram.com/p/CeqhiEkrrpN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

From @1843mag: In marrying the complexities of technology and the simplicity of nature, the Bone Chair is a design of the times. Joris Laarman, a Dutch designer, began working on it after seeing a documentary featuring Claus Mattheck, a German expert on biomechanics. Mattheck had researched the efficiency with which natural objects like bones grow and created an algorithm that Laarman then applied to furniture design. “If Mother Nature wanted to create a chair,” Laarman said, “it would be something like the Bone Chair.” To hear more about the design of the Bone Chair, click on 1843’s handle and follow the link in their bio. #bonechair #jorislaarman #reedkrakoff #iwishiddonethat https://ift.tt/2NfpwD5

#GishPicks: we are enjoying the maker and digital chairs...and much more!...at the @mfahouston “Joris Laarman Lab: Design in the Digital Age” show of creations by @jorislaarman + others. It’s a fascinating look at traditional and futurist design and is on view through September 16. <exhibition website> www.mfah.org/exhibitions/joris-laarman-lab-design-digital-age (at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)

Microstructures Adaptation Chair (Long Cell) of @jorislaarman is on view at @mamcsaintetienne. Curated by Marie-Ange Brayer and Martine Dancer-Moures, “Design et Marveilleux” investigates the ways in which design evolves and is inspired by patterns and decoration found in nature. Bone Chaise Longue - Joris Laarman
"Trees have the ability to add material where strength it is needed, and bones have the ability to take away material where it is not needed. "
"...functionalists are also sinners of styling, and that soberness is not always more functional than highly decorative form." -Joris Laarman

The table currently lives in the permanent collection at the @ngvmelbourne 🌟 Photograph by Joshua McHugh for @archdigest video snippet of table being made. 🎨👌Fascinates me. "Bridge Table The Bridge Table is one of the engineering highlights of the lab, but also had the toughest hurdles to overcome. After the design for a large sculptural aluminum table was done, I became fascinated by a technique called High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) spray coating. Using this technology we could apply ultra-tough coatings of materials like tungsten carbide to softer lightweight structural materials like aluminum. A polished aluminum surface would have been ruined the first time it was used, but this coating would last forever. The only problem was: nobody had ever done a large mirror-polished flat surface before, especially not in the dimensions of our table. So we had to figure out how to do it ourselves. After days and nights of painstakingly trying to grind the tungsten down to a level where it could be polished, I remember well the point in time where only a week before our deadline it just didn’t change. Frantically, we tried everything we could think of and miraculously that eventually resulted in a strategy that worked – literally the night before it had to be shipped. The result was a dark polished curved surface that almost made the large surface disappear. The Bridge table is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia."
