🌾 What's something an OC needs to learn?

Sheryl needs to learn how to open up to and trust people. After the loss of her parents and a parent figure (because apparently I can't let her have anything), she developed the conviction that keeping everyone at a distance is the way to not get hurt again. The only bond she has besides Cisco is Colette, and even then, Sheryl rejected it at first.

Spending time with Moren in such a vulnerable position forces her to trust someone and, eventually, makes her realize she can't just decide not to care.

Sheryl canonically goes along with three people, so... yeah, she would butt heads with everyone. Although, I feel like Lily, Nathan and Josephine especially wouldn't like her--Lily because they are too similar, Nathan because he's too nice, Josephine because she'd find her extremely rude.

���️ Which OC have you had the longest, what inspired them?

Evelyn wins. Both her name and her looks (skin, hair and eye colour) were inspired by the protagonist of an Italian series called Evelyn Starr. The series never got a conclusion and the second book has an open finale, which is probably the biggest bookish tragedy of my life. I loved it so much I created Evelyn to pay it a tribute, though she has nothing else in common with that character.

Oh man I can't choose just one so — Babette, Josie, and Henrietta for fathers/father figures?

Okay, okay. I’m very excited to talk about Babette and Henrietta’s fathers. Mostly because I feel like I focus too much on their mum’s side of the family. Anyway.

Babette and Hernietta have two dads. Their bio-dad and their step-dad. Their mum and their bio-dad amicably divorced a few years after Henrietta was born, and their mum remarried a decade later.

Aharon Abrams

Aharon is Babette and Henrietta’s bio-dad. A cultural Jew, raised religiously yet moved away from that post-High School. A generally carefree dude who is the one to blame for his kids’ interest in computers, science, and—in particular—video games. He also let his kids watch age-inappropriate films and shows, but they only have fond memories of that, and it was an important aspect of their development. In fact, it was this chilled approach to raising his kids that resulted in his kids feeling comfortable enough to come out to him and his side of the family first.

One important aspect of Aharon and his relationship with his children is his Jewishness. As I said, he is a cultural Jew. He attended festivals and participated in holidays but was a rare sight at shul outside of Yahrzeits and the odd pop-up oneg. Then he had kids: Benjamin, Babette, and Henrietta. It didn’t exactly change his stance on things, but he realized that he needed to make a choice about how he was going to raise his kids and how it would affect them.

Long story short, and it was an incredibly long story, he eventually decided that he wanted to raise his kids as he was raised. They would go to shul, attend cheder, learn about their heritage, immerse themselves in Judaism. He would host Seders, teach them about their culture and history, show them the music he listened to when he was young, show them the films he watched. His parents helped with that, when they moved to Adelaide, his grandmother, too. But he wanted to give them the opportunity to make a choice, and he couldn’t exactly do that if he didn’t raise them Jewishly.

Ultimately, without that, Babette and Henrietta wouldn’t be who they were and they are immensely grateful that he gave them this opportunity. Judaism means a lot to them, for Babette especially it kept her sane when she was all alone in a galaxy far, far away.

He’s a good bloke.

Fredrick “Fred” Harris-Caynham

Then there’s their step-father, Fred. They have a good relationship with him. It was iffy at first, not sure how to interact with this strange man suddenly in their lives, but he understood what they were going though and was patient.

He’s a good man. A bit stern, but he obviously loves his children, including his step-children, very much. He’s the one who comforts Babette when she has a minor breakdown after realizing she had a mental bock stopping her from being intimate with Josephine. He’s the one who teaches her (and Henrietta) how to drive. He learned how to make latkes for Chanukkah, and baked cheesecake with them for the Shavuot. I have a lot of emotions about this character, but yeah—he’s a good bloke.

As mentioned above, Babette felt more comfortable coming out about her bisexuality to her bio-dad, and in that comes in one of the criticism.

He loves his family, he just doesn’t “understand” bisexuality and the wider queer identities. And that reflects in his actions and words, and he’s made some uncomfortable jokes and comments. But, after Babette came out, he reeled back—made a conscious effort to stop making those jokes and comments—even if he wasn’t sure how to express this to Babette. But he did improve, and it was such an improvement that Henrietta felt a lot more comfortable when she came out.

Harrison Williams

Finally, Harrison. I’ve spoken about him before. He’s Josephine’s father, a paramedic who tries his best to make time for his family despite his unruly working hours. I had a slight idea that he could’ve been the paramedic who got Babette to the hospital when she returned to Earth, but I’m not sure I’ll got that far.

He’s a good man. All of the dads are. He helped build the relationship that left Josephine comfortable coming out to them when she was 14. He cultivated her interest in sports, her interest in the outdoors. He cultivated her connection to her Aboriginal heritage. He was a shoulder to cry on when she found out she had been cheated on. He’s a bit out of it, I’ll admit—he wasn’t sure how to help Josephine figure out what she wanted to do post-High School, wasn’t sure how to help her with her relationship with Babette—but he tries his best.
