Reaching for Stardust - Part XVIII
Tumblr media
Read Looking for Space here / Playlists / Read RFS on wattpad or read previous parts here
Word Count: ~2700
Warnings: none:)
Omg...can you believe we've reaching the wedding chapters? Hope you enjoy...
---
I counted down every minute of every hour of the last 24 hours before we headed up to the lodge, tingling with an abundance of nervousness and fear I’d never felt before–thinking about the wedding before, planning it, getting anxious just sitting in front of my laptop or grocery shopping or whatever, didn’t compare to the final hours before it was happening. It wasn’t like I was being marched to the electric chair. No, my mind and my heart knew this was all excitement and excitement often felt a lot–or sometimes exactly–like fear.
“Why do I feel like this?” I asked Kirsti while she drove us north along the highway. Josh and Jake were in the Jeep; Danny was driving himself and Sam up together. Bev and Jane were paired off, trailing not far behind my sister and I last I’d checked. Josh’s parents were headed up too, as were my own; everyone else would be showing up later, when things actually began, and just the thought of all the guests rolling in for this big day escalated my unease.
“Because it’s a lot,” my sister replied, her words simple but so spot on that I felt a slight lifting of my anxiety, though not enough to keep me from squirming and fiddling in my seat. “Because it’s scary,” she added, sparing me a reassuring glance. “There’s a lot of pressure. It’s gonna be fun though, right?”
“Oh yeah,” I quickly agreed, tapping one foot against the car mat below. “It’ll be so much fun. I think I’m just really anxious to get to the fun parts–like, I don’t wanna rush through the vows and the whole ceremony but that is all the scary stuff.” There’d been no formal rehearsal dinner–yeah, we all got together for dinner and drinks and fun, but the “rehearsal” part had been lost on all of us. Perhaps that was contributing to my anxieties. Still, I was glad for it. Who needed more stuffiness?
“Every girl I know who’s gotten married says it all flies by,” Kirsti told me, lifting one hand from the wheel to imitate an explosion next to her head. “Blink of an eye, boom–it’s all over. So, yeah, try to enjoy it.”
I sighed, drumming my fingers against my knee. “Yeah. Yeah, I will.”
“This might not be the only ‘best day of your life,’ but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’ll be one of the very best anyway. You know?”
Nodding, I gazed out the window. “For sure.” Settling back in the seat, I said what I’d been thinking just a few moments ago: “Josh told me the other day–reminded me, really–that fear feels a lot like excitement. So our minds get it mixed up sometimes. I am excited. I really, really am.”
“Good!” Kirsti chirped, laughing a little. “That’s the right attitude.”
I watched the roadside pass by for a few seconds before I asked, “Is it really bad luck if Josh and I see each other beforehand?”
“Well, that’s the tradition. Or, it’s one tradition.” Another glance at me and Kirsti added, “But if you guys want to, don’t worry about that. We make our own luck.”
-
The lodge was as beautiful in person as it was in the pictures, perhaps even more so because of the true winter atmosphere we’d been graced with for the wedding day. The sun was hidden beneath an opaque layer of cool gray and below, mid-morning mist webbed itself across the ground and through the trees, the pines and firs and beech hazy behind it, all the branches covered in a light layer of pristine white snow. It all was such a beautiful, calm natural backdrop to the impressive lodge–even bigger than I expected, it towered on top of the small mountain we’d circled around to reach it, with sharp peaks jutting into the air and huge windows reflecting the sky.
My heart skipped a beat as I stepped out of the car, my boots sinking ever so slightly into damp earth and wet snow, and my breath plumed in front of my face as I tried to take in the gravity of what was happening.
“It’s a good thing we got here first,” Kirsti said once she was out in the cold air and by my side. “If you want to follow tradition.”
Inside, the lodge was so big that I felt like our wedding party and guests might be swallowed whole by it, myself included. But it was warm and inviting with its soft lighting and cozy, wooden interior. The staff at the front desk were just the same, their smiles seemingly genuine and their excitement, even if it did come from their paycheck, gave me more peace of mind. I had so much help throughout this whole thing–Josh, Kirsti, my parents, Josh’s parents, the boys, the girls, and now a whole team of professionals who could do things I couldn’t.
Beginning with hair and makeup, since Josh and I had agreed that he would do the walk-through to approve ambiance and decor and save me from fretting about it. I’d been inclined to do the beauty part of it myself and leave the girls to their own, but my mom had insisted that a professional makeup artist would make sure things looked right in pictures and my sister reminded me that I was just not that good at doing hair.
Fair, I thought while I was fussed over in the mirror of an oversized wooden vanity, glancing over to my right at Kirsti.
“Good?” she asked, catching my eye right before Bev came up behind us.
“She’s working fast,” Bev remarked, gesturing at the hairdresser who was finishing up Jane. “We might have some solid time to blow before the ceremony starts. Did anyone bring weed?”
“Bev!” my sister scolded while I stifled a laugh as the makeup artist brushed my eyebrows into place. “She can’t get high at her wedding.”
“Not before it starts, anyway,” I said, and the makeup artist smirked in front of me.
“You think Josh isn’t?” Bev asked, leaning against the back of Kirsti’s chair.
“No. He’s taking this seriously,” Kirsti answered for me, which was true. But I imagined he and the boys might have been having a similar conversation all the same.
“Sam and Danny might,” Bev went on, reading my mind, tapping her chin with one finger. “Maybe I should go find them.”
“No–I need you here,” I told her, which was also true. I reached one hand out to my side to grab her and it was only half a second before her hand found mine. “We’re gonna party so hard after, right? No one’s allowed to get high or drunk until Josh and I are.”
“Okay, okay,” Bev said, chuckling. “I’m sort of kidding. I’m nervous too. Just saying.”
“Tell me about it,” Kirsti said, her own hands trying to “fix” her perfectly constructed loose waves that fell over her shoulders. “I have to give a speech.”
“You’ll be great,” I assured her, reaching for her hand next after Bev freed mine. “You and Jake–our spokespeople. I’m just happy you wanted to.”
“Of course I want to. You’re my sister.” Kirsti sniffed lightly and turned away. “Okay, I need to stop before I start. I’m just–”
“Oh, babe,” Bev cooed, wrapping her arms around my sister’s shoulders.
“Oh no,” Jane said, stepping up from behind, staying beside both of them while the makeup artist drew light lines with pencil through my eyebrows and I was forced to sit still and struggle to watch the emotions unravel.
My stomach churned at the thought of my sister being upset again, how it was me and not her, how she felt behind in life, but then she laughed softly and said, “It’s just a lot, you know? I’m so happy for you.” She reached for my hand again, squeezing. “I always cry at weddings.”
“It’s too early for that,” Bev said in a soft voice, rubbing Kirsti’s shoulders. “Save the tears for later. There’ll be plenty.”
“Seriously. I’m gonna be sobbing after all this,” I told the girls. “Happy tears, yes, but there will be lots of them.”
“Please save them,” Jane begged. “If someone starts crying, I’ll start crying and my makeup is too perfect to ruin.”
The makeup artist looked up at her and smiled. “Thanks.”
“You’re great, yeah,” I told the artist when I had a better moment to breathe, while she was turned away to find the perfect eye shadow. “Everyone looks amazing. I guess Mom was right to make sure I didn’t do this myself.”
“Lucky for the guys that they don’t have to do this,” Bev commented, inspecting herself in the mirror while she remained standing behind my sister.
“I wouldn’t be so sure,” I replied, closing my eyes as the makeup artist resumed her work, painting my lids with color. “Josh might throw some glitter on or something. Jake might have packed eyeliner for all I know.”
“You think?” Jane asked, and I was able to open my eyes just long enough to see her inching closer to me.
“That’d be hot,” Bev added, undoubtedly reading Jane’s mind from the mostly-hidden smirk on Jane’s face in the mirror.
Once all was said and done, I took a breath while looking down at my terrycloth robe covered thighs before looking up in the mirror at the final result. I was worried I wouldn’t look like me, there’d be too much, even though the girls all looked great. Elevated but not foreign, soft and pretty–when I did look in the mirror at my reflection, that’s what I saw back. Subtle shadow on my eyes, slightly stronger brows juxtaposed with sweetly flushed cheeks and delicate rosy lips. There was just one thing, because I had a real hunch about Josh, that I asked to add.
“Oh, so you’re really going to do glitter?” Bev asked, beating the other girls to the punch.
“I have some,” the makeup artist confirmed, holding up small containers of white and pale blue and silver. “We could do a little on the inner corner of the eye. Your cheekbones, maybe?”
“Whatever you think would look good,” I told her, watching the glitter shine as the containers moved in her hands. “Without going overboard I guess.”
“It fits the theme,” Kirsti said, resting her hand on my knee for a moment. “Go all out if you want.”
I smiled. “Just a bit. Just enough to feel like a star.”
-
My boots crunched over snow and slipped a bit through patches of mud as I made my way back around the lodge, back to the tree line and then even further. Like a movie, I thought, I was going to tuck myself into the dim, lush winter forest and wait for my one true love.
A gust of frigid air made my eyes water for a second. I’d been smart enough to pack tissues–I grabbed one from my coat pocket and dabbed at my eyes, trying not to ruin the makeup or ruin any glitter in the process. When the wind stopped and my eyes dried, I put the tissue back in my pocket and leaned back against a birch tree; I sighed heavily, looking up through the mostly bare branches of the birch and then at the snow-covered branches of the coniferous trees around me. My heart beat fast and hard, jumping up into my throat, my nerves bountiful as if I were doing something scandalous or meeting someone I wasn’t supposed to. I guess the former was sort of true–we were going against tradition by seeing each other in our wedding garb beforehand. But I didn’t care. I needed to see Josh before anyone else. I wanted him to be the one who saw me first, not a whole room full of people.
“Hello, sweetheart,” were the gentle words from behind me that made my heart do a flip and then slow into a comforting lull deep inside me. I turned around, hiding what I could of my body behind the tree, hands braced against the bark.
“Hi, baby,” I said back to Josh, who was also in a coat, his wedding suit still a secret apart from the bottom half of his pants. I shivered and reached a hand out, beckoning him toward me; he stepped closer and closer, extending his arm, then our fingers touched and he tugged me forward and away from my hiding spot.
“My goodness,” he said softly, freeing my hand to take my face in both of his, his fingers carefully caressing my jaw and my temples. Looking into his eyes, I saw a faint reflection of the forest around us in his pupils, then the twinkle of unyielding, rapturous joy in his irises. Josh sighed, then kissed the tip of my nose. “You are so fucking beautiful.”
“So are you. My gorgeous boy,” I said, my vision drifting from his eyes to the tiny jewels around them–one shiny, round rhinestone in each inner corner and one on each outer corner. Just enough to draw interest and add some shine; not too much to distract. I put my hands on his shoulders and smiled, looking down at his lips. “Thanks for coming out. I feel so–I don’t know, so conspicuous and scandalous. Is anyone looking for us?”
Josh giggled. “Probably. I only alerted Jake to my temporary leave. What about you?”
“The girls know. They approve.”
“That’s good. No one’s worried about the whole ‘bad luck to see the bride’ thing?”
“Maybe my mother,” I said, chuckling and holding Josh close with my hands moving down to his back. “If she knew.”
Josh’s eyes flicked down to my chest. “So can I see?”
The fear of contracting bad luck had, in fact, been relinquished, but standing there before Josh, secretly meeting in the woods before our ceremony, I felt like it might be good to maintain some surprise.
“I had planned on it,” I told him, bringing my hands to his front, my fingers fussing with the collar of his coat. “But now I think I wanna save our big reveals for when we’re inside. I just really needed to see you.”
“And here I am,” Josh said, smiling wide and tilting his head, leaning in for a kiss. I reciprocated, our lips pressing softly together while another gust of icy wind whirled around and against us. It ruffled Josh’s curls and my neatly constructed waves when we parted, and he smiled again and pulled me into a tight hug, resting his face on my shoulder. “Despite what you may think, I was always confident we’d reach this day. Now that we’re living it though, it feels somewhat surreal. Maybe this place being so magical is adding to that feeling.”
“It really is magical,” I agreed. It didn’t feel like just a place where people got married–I didn’t even have the conscious sense that other people had gotten married there before me, though I obviously knew that was the case. But the woodsy, fairytale-like charm of the massive lodge and the deep, dark, wintry woods really did make it feel like we were in some lovely storybook, some fantasy that was only real in the pages it was written on.
“How are you feeling?” Josh asked as he stepped back, giving space between us, and running his hands down my arms to grab ahold of my own. “Nerves not getting the better of you still?”
“I feel less nervous now that I’ve seen you,” I said, glancing down at his bare left hand where his wedding band would soon gleam from. “Maybe it’ll be less terrifying than I think it will. I just have to focus on only you.” I let go of his right hand to reach up and caress his face. “Thankfully, that’s a very easy thing to do.”
“You’re enchanting,” Josh said, the rhinestones around his eyes catching the light as the clouds parted above and a faint wash of sunlight shone through the trees. I laughed and cupped his cheeks, pulling him back in for another kiss, and another whip of wind sent snow down from the branches to dance around us and touch our heated faces.
