thots on finishing my second full rewatch of crazy ex girlfriend
god if only my identity issues and lack of career goals could be miraculously resolved by just noticing an intense passion ive always had bubbling under the surface but that it just never occurred to me to pursue for some reason. sarah marshall voice MUST BE NICE.
this is an amazing and incredible show for a lot of reasons one of which is its very firm adherence to thesis but there are also times where it feels like the writing cant get out of its own way because of this. e.g. actively sabotaging nathaniel as a love interest in ways that dont totally make sense given his past characterization because its important for story reasons that he not outpace greg or josh in terms of personal growth or attachment/importance to rebecca. like as early as mid-season 3 hes clearly already undergoing a lot of the changes that would make him a more kindhearted and respectful person but then in season 4 he just kind of. forgets them temporarily so that rebecca will break up with him and make him learn a lesson that he appeared to have halfway already learned. idk it feels like a bit of a nitpicky problem because there really is no easy fix for this writing-wise but i did notice it
valencia being team greg does not make sense to me. it just does not. valencia and greg never really had a dynamic that differentiated itself from her dynamic with the rest of josh's friends, and she had no response to greg and rebecca being together when that happened because her character wasnt relevant to that plotline at the time so her rooting for them to get back together just seems to be based totally on secondhand knowledge of what their relationship was like that we don't even see her get. i understand that heather picked nathaniel because they had their little bonding moment in 4x06 and paula picked josh because she was og team josh and likewise because they also bonded a bit in the same episode but i personally feel valencia-josh heather-greg paula-nathaniel would have made more sense. valencia really cooled on josh after their breakup (to a degree i honestly found to be a bit much, she basically treats him like hector whom she actively disliked until 4x10 and its like. hello???) but she did sincerely love him at one point and tbh i think they should have had a little reconciliation arc and she should have been rooting for joshbecca, heather likewise dated greg and knows him really well and saw firsthand how much he loves rebecca, and paula is close to nathaniel because they work together and she saw his personal growth from collaborating with him on the pro bono cases. idk. i like 4x06 but i also feel like there wasnt really a need for heather to learn to like nathaniel because they werent clearly shown in the past to have a negative dynamic based on dislike or disrespect and likewise with paula and josh. it made sense kind of but it could have made more sense.
season 4 in general is a total mess and i think it just comes down to the season having way too many episodes and not enough to fill them. all the greg and rebecca stuff is good, the nathaniel dream sequence episode is great use of filler, i love the development of josh and rebecca becoming friends again and then catching feelings, and i love the denouement for paula in particular as well as heather and valencia although i think the latter two dont have as much substance and some of the conflict in them feels contrived. but in general everything is stretched out wayyyy too much, the songs feel sparser and weaker (theres like four or five that i would consider really great and would happily listen to on a regular basis but that's out of an entire season's worth of songs after three seasons of almost nonstop bangers) and multiple episodes that just feel like the show spinning its wheels. 4x09 in particular is a weak point and might actually be my least favorite episode, i cant believe they thought anyone was going to get excited about the prospect of rebecca fucking the random tinder dude from 1x04 plus the cats parody songs are such a slog. tbh most of the back half of my personal episode ranking is filled out by episodes from s4. there are some memorable high points here and there but it really takes some endurance to get through the rest of the season
skylar astin greg. what is there left to say about skylar astin greg. hes just a different guy. i already made a post about him so i wont repeat myself too much. idk. hes okay, he does produce a greg-like impression, he has good chemistry with rachel. hes like greg flavored la croix. i definitely dont hate him in the role and in a lot of ways i think he was a great choice for the show (to be honest i think santinos charisma is so intense that it would have just been a bit much to put his greg in a horse race with josh and nathaniel, plus his dynamic with rebecca would have felt completely different and would have lacked that sense of 'hello, nice to meet you' that i do think was necessary for them at that point) but ill always be wistfully wondering what could have been if santino had been able to come back to reprise the character
honestly despite all its flaws in a way almost any criticism of this show feels like nitpicking to me because it's just so fucking great

My Bets for Rebecca’s Final Dates
Next week, our girl Rebecca will be treated to dates with Greg, Josh, and Nathaniel. What will those dates be like?
Here’s my guesses:
Nathaniel - I think he’s going to go for something Harry Potter themed. Maybe he’ll take her to a Harry Potter show or make his apartment look like Hogwarts for a night of potions making. I think this makes sense as their first happy memory together and also because it’s a sign of Nathaniel’s growth -- something that he was once ashamed of admitting is now something he openly geeks out about. Additionally, I think the rest of Mountaintop (Ex. Maya, Daryll, Tim, Jim, George) will help out, showing how much nicer Nathaniel has become as well as how open he is to everyone about his interests. Also, maybe Jim will hit on Rebecca as a side joke, but it won’t be taken too seriously.
Greg - Greg and Rebecca bond over their chemistry as well as their similar approaches to making fun of things. For that reason, I think Greg will organize a West Covina Dog Show. It’s a fun callback to their post-Thanksgiving hangout session and can also show Greg’s growing appreciation for West Covina as a whole. Plus, playing with puppies is just cute as fuck and they’re probably stimulate some form of aphrodisiac.
Josh - I think Josh’s date will reflect the love of the inner child that Rebecca pointed out on Friday, and because of that, I believe Josh will take Rebecca to Raging Waters. He knows Rebeca’s wanted to go there forever, he knows she had a bad time when she went with Greg, and he has a similar love for it that Rebecca has so this time, it will be fun. He acknowledges that it’s a risk, but he wants to overwrite a bad memory with a good one. Additionally, it shows how he’s developed into someone more emotionally aware of the needs of others.
Bonus Prediction: I think Trent will show up before the finale. I don’t know how nor when nor why, but he’s appeared in every season and I just can’t see last season’s events being his last appearance on the show. I like this because Rebecca’s character arc will have fully completed and so she won’t let Trent ruin that. It’ll show a great contrast to the person Rebecca is now and the person who she could’ve been without the strength she had to seek help or her support system. Actually, as I was writing this, I now have a theory as to how this can happen. One of the ex-prisoners who Rebecca helped has a boyfriend in the men’s prison, the same men’s prison that hosts Trent, and maybe they’re even cellmates or friends. Anyway, our ex-prisoner tells her boyfriend about how this team of lawyers sprung her from jail and after Trent learns about this, he puts two and two together and figures out that it’s Rebecca. Suddenly, the team gets a request from the men’s prison for legal help and when they show up (Rebecca and Paula and maybe Nathaniel), they see Trent. Paula wants them to leave immediately and Rebecca wants the same, but Trent says something that keeps Rebecca around to talk to him and from there, the rest follows.

California Christmastime Analysis [Crazy Ex-Girlfriend]
Ya know what I want for Christmas? *takes shot of vodka* For someone to explain to me why I have two separate analyses of “I’ve Got my Head in the Clouds,” in my drafts and I’m writing up an analysis on “California Christmastime.” I mean really. This is just a funny number. The arbitrary Christmas song in the Christmas episode any tv show that will be running in December is expected to do. And yet that’s kinda the point. This number is literally set up for us to not think about it. It’s before Rebecca admits to imagining her life as a musical, and before Dr. Akopian points out her dissociative episodes, so we just move past this number. Even on rewatch we just fall back into the feel good Christmassiness of it and don’t think. But this is still another one of Rebecca’s dissociative episodes, and an episode that ends with Rebecca dancing on a currently unused stage, exposing her love for performing, and alone. But she doesn’t feel alone. Yes that closing moment is a tragic punchline, but the rest of the number shows us that she’s moving closer to happiness, because Rebecca is finding acceptance, even if it isn’t by the mother she told to “take [her] snow and shove it,” because she’s found a place and people that will accept her. People who are so accepting the made “I don’t believe in god,” raised Jewish Rebecca get into the Christmas spirit for this number (ya know that and the fact that cultural surroundings would affect the way she views the movie in her mind). In her mind she exaggerates the accepting nature of her new friends by presenting them with Chet, Carol, and Stuntman Santa; members of the societal outskirts she has always considered herself a part of. That she was made a part of in New York. But not here, where even people like these (like because these individuals are probably figments of Rebecca’s imagination) are accepted and walk amongst the rest of an unphased society. And that’s really great for her! I mean horrible Rebecca considers herself so lowly, of course, but the fact that she feels accepted here. Even if the people who accept her aren’t with her at the moment, and of course they’re not. Why is Paula hanging with Daryl at the mall, and what are Heather and Greg even doing back in West Covina so soon; dinner can’t be that short? Rebecca doesn’t even know they’re together, let alone the context they’re together in, at this moment, but this number isn’t about them being coupley (which they aren’t). California Christmastime is about the people that make Rebecca, or us feel accepted. These pairings just make sense for this type of number. Her and her love interest, the work associates, and new friends together. It’s fairly standard grouping that makes it a bit easier for us to relate. So what if she is alone on that stage, and all these people “have stuff to do,” because regardless of the distance she feels the compassion she’s received from them and it’s put has put her in the mood to sing and dance in public, not that anyone even notices, just walking past like it’s normal. Accepting her as part of their norm. And that’s the point. No matter how far the distance, you are never too far from people who accept you. It’s beautiful really, not just “the Christmas number.”
Happy Holidays. I’m sorry I couldn’t get this out in time for Hanukkah, like I planned….not that anyone cares about my blog. Or if you don’t celebrate anything (lucky you) congrats on making it this far in the year. Just a bit farther you’re almost there. So at this time of year that you may be struggling with let’s make it a California Christmastime for wherever you are. Know that so long as you read my blog I’ll accept you. Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring.

maybe it’s just me but both rethaniel and joshbecca seem like...and i don’t mean to offend anyone who ships either of them but...they seem like a joke alndskdkskdksk i just can’t take either of them seriously?? like greg was the only one who was aware of how stupid it all was and he was the only one who got that serious real talk moment about rebecca with whijo. nathaniel and josh asking each other and greg to stand down repeatedly was hilarious but also...they’re literally like the butt of a joke
