Shiki and Joshua having a psychological tug-of-war over Neku. Shiki taught him to practice compassion but Joshua understands his impulse to turn away. It's all different ways of protecting yourself. The two of them are masks and mirrors, liars wearing their faces. Neku embodies the traits they both resent in themselves and need to fix and punish in him. The vulnerable wallflower, unfashionable stagnancy. If they can mold and manipulate and mend him, maybe they can solve themselves.

Shiki changed him first, but it's Joshua he cries for. A scar is a scar is a scar, permanent marks on this prop they call Neku. Without Shiki's insights Neku would never have tried to understand Joshua. Without Joshua's game, Shiki would never have stopped trying to be Eri.

“But apparently, some might be?” Joshua fiddles with his hair again. “We don’t actually do that, you know. It’d be a waste of a perfectly good soul.” Like Shiki cares? But Joshua just laughs and continues. “I admit, you have me curious. What kind of deal would you sell your soul for?”

She should tell him to knock it off. She should run. She should forget this whole stupid plan and tell Rhyme she was dumb for even considering it. (But Yamasaki’s Partner thought he should put the jacket back on. But even if it was cheating, it might be worth it, for Neku. But a favor for the evil plan just doesn’t feel right, after this many months.)

i can't see joshua as anything other than gay so their relationship is strictly platonic for me and as such i would hesitate to classify myself as a joshiki shipper. that said:

I FUCKING LOVE THEM. v-polyam joshneshiki is my FAVORITE twewy ship and joshua and shiki's relationship is a really important part of that! they never interacted in canon so it's free real estate and hnnnnn there's a LOT of real estate to build on! they have so many of their worst traits in common (that's why inherent eroticism of attempted murder is on here; it's not literal, but that's the Vibe), the fakeness and the lying and the selfishness, the desire for something else, this weird self-esteem where they hate themselves but still value themselves so highly, forming this sort of feedback loop. IT'S SO INTERESTING. i haven't put them in a situation alone together without neku but i should I SHOULD i want to see what they'll do i want to study them.

There's like, two people who do know you and who give you an affective nickname which is a shortened version of the name you chose. One of them is your parenting figure and the second is probably the closest you could get from a best friend, if only you hadn't done unforgivable things to him. Yet he still calls you that way, truly in a affective manner.

Now if someone else starts giving you the same nickname, then people can only assume that you connected with them in some way.
