Sketches from Xena: Princess Warrior
Ted Raimi did such a fantastic job playing Jace and Jett. It’s sad we didn’t get more development on them.
If you look closely, you can see Jett’s outfit is actually very elaborate. Look at the insane detail on that leather! I don’t think Ares even owned anything that hardcore.

Fanfiction_Xena: Warrior Princess
Fictober 2023_Prompt 11: “You lost it. Well, we lost it.”
.
.
.
The ringing in Joxer’s ears was almost as painful as the throbbing in his head. His eyes tried to focus on the world around him, but all he succeeded in doing was falling flat on his back, fighting waves of nausea.
“Be still,” a soft, slightly grating voice said. A cool cloth was gently placed on his forehead, while one of his hands was cupped protectively by two soft, feminine hands. No calluses, he thought. Not Gabrielle. No. Meg.
“Meg!” He gasped, trying to surge forward, but another set of hands pushed him back down.
“Easy there, tiger.” Male, sassy, rich, and deep. Autolycus.
Joxer groaned. It was slowly coming back to him now. A heist. A heist gone wrong. A heist with him, Meg, and Autolycus, and…
“What happened to it?” Joxer groaned, peering up at the two figures above him. It gave him no comfort both parties actually looked concerned. Autolycus normally treated him with disinterest or disdain with a heavy drip of sarcasm. Meg was much more attentive, but rarely soft. He saw a darkening shadow on her cheek, and a crust of dried blood over Autolycus’ left eyebrow. Something had gone very wrong. “What happened to it?” He repeated.
Autolycus exchanged a concerned look with Meg before sighing deeply, and saying, “You lost it. Well, we lost it.”
Joxer closed his eyes again, squeezing them tightly. He ground his teeth so hard his head started pounding anew. He wanted to cry, but he would not let them see – he was Joxer the Mighty, and he would not cry.
“It’s okay, Joxer,” Meg soothed, stroking his cheek carefully. She brushed away the tears leaking past his eyelids. “I promise it will be okay.”
“It will be okay.” A new voice. Richer, deeper, authoritative. He’d know that voice anywhere, follow it anywhere. Joxer opened his eyes and saw Xena leaning over him, smiling affectionately.
“Xena,” he wheezed, new tears spilling out.
“We’ll get the amulet, and more importantly, we’ll free your mother. I promise.” The dark-haired warrior squeezed his other hand.
Joxer nodded, working hard to compose himself. The knot in this throat was agony, but he forced it back, and whispered, “Thank you, Xena.”
She smiled back, patting his hand. “It’s what friends do.”

I have a few things I took note of watching Xena Warrior Princess and one of them is how they handled Meg's character. I personally loved her out of Xena's doppelgangers as she had more spunk and funny. It sucks how they paired her with Joxer who has some feelings towards her while he's in love with Gabrielle at the same time. Like Joxer knows that Gabrielle doesn't love him romantically, so it could've been an opportunity for him to slowly move on and they build their own relationship.
Tumblr media
Watching "The Furies" episode is actually dark and sad because the whole time Xena was losing her mind and just imagined Gabrielle by her side like it was a normal day. I believe she was slowly losing it but the furies just amplified her losing her insanity. It went as far as imagining what would Gabrielle do while dealing with the furies situation.
The fight between Najara and Xena was so good especially because they both are at a equal standpoint in combat and both have a common weakness -- > Gabrielle
Even when Xena was pregnant that was not stopping her from fighting.
I loved seeing the forgiveness between Gabrielle and Callisto as Xena gave up her passage to heaven so she can reunite with her family. It felt like a full circle when Callisto reincarnated to Eve because both her and Xena lost family in the past, but only to have a family in the end. Plus I did enjoy seeing Callisto be with her family again.
I kinda tuned out with the whole Christianity thing it followed but I did enjoy the "Fallen Angel" episode cause it was fun to see Callisto and Xena as demons.
I see why most people didn't like "Married with Fishsticks" episode.
Tumblr media
The ring trilogy was just pure perfection 🥰
Idk but for the Gods to be powerful, half of them got bodied by Xena. The whole prophecy with Eve was.....something. Like I understand that Eve was the reason why some people converted to believing in Eli rather than the Gods. They made it easy for Xena to kill these Gods as there was many opportunities where they could've got an upper hand but lost.
Eve's character should've been fleshed out more as I did appreciate the little moments with her and her moms or bond with Varia.
Imo Ares and Joxer were running each other's money on who can be the most annoying somewhat unbearable man to Xena and Gabrielle.
Autolycus was another character I wished had his final moments with Xena and Gabrielle before they end off his story.
Tumblr media
What if Xena had ended on "Many Happy Returns" as Xena and Gabrielle fly away into the sunset? I mean Xena gave a love poem to Gabrielle that was written by Sappho as a birthday gift.

Xena Coffee Shop A/U Idea
So Gabrielle works in coffee shop, maybe Starbucks, but more likely a smaller more niche store that is soft and quiet with big squishy couches where all the regulars know and love her. She’s exhausted from managing the place without being an official manager (or maybe she is idk) but she smiles often and the place remains busy despite a Starbucks having moved in just around the block because (although she would absolutely deny this) the patrons look forward to her positivity and advice. But people know not to mess with her or try to cause trouble for her or any of her fellow employees because although she is sweet she’ll kick you out if you even THINK about being rude to any of the employees.
Xena founded a karate/jujitsu/something hybrid gym SOMETHING where her primary focus is helping people (in particular, women or marginalized people who feel weak or unsafe or feel incapable of protecting themselves), but she doesn’t turn away people if they come to her for the right reasons. She hosts daily fighting lessons using different techniques (jujitsu, weapons, hand to hand, p much everything) and had reached an almost legendary status to those who have come to her in their time of need. It is well known in many circles that Xena used to the be the head of a....gang? Crime syndicate? Mob? I’m not sure, but something HUGE and something that made her a lot of money and a LOT of enemies before she left the life for good. I kind of like the idea of her being some kind of crime boss for some huge underground syndicate because that gives some room for some kidnappings and crazy stuff but also that’s hot as hell.
Joxer DEFINITELY becomes an employee by simple virtue of being in the store so much and bugging her so much that he may as well be being paid for it (but also he is...surprisingly good at creating new roasts and making cool new drinks so why not). He thinks he’s suave (like Ares) but deep down knows he’s not.
Ares is the obnoxious rude ass businessman who treads the line of being banned from the store but is accepted only because he buys ENORMOUS amounts of their coffee for his meetings or whatever. He’s buff as hell and has reflexes that put a cat to shame. I’m not sure if he’s officially into martial arts but he knows a lot of things from a lot of places. OH MAYBE HE IS LIKE BIG BOSS OF CRIME SYNDICATE THAT HAD BEEN PARTNERED WITH XENA’S IDK.
Ephiny is a student of Xena’s; she’s amazing but struggles with trusting partners after the loss of her husband (Phantes). Her son is just getting to the point of toddling and she already has him INVOLVED with Xena as much as is physically possible. She also works with Gabrielle in the coffee shop and is the eventual link that brings Gab and Xena together.
Callisto was Xena’s top student and top pain in the ass until the loss of her family. She now trains at a “rival” dojo. She’s constantly proclaiming herself better than Xena and trying to take Xena down a notch or two despite the fact that that’s not how any of this works. She lost her mom and sister in a fire and blames Xena (she was 8 or 9 and a student at Xena’s dojo; Xena took her home one evening with nobody came to pick her up after practice. she tried to run into the burning building but it was too far gone. she claims Xena kept her from saving her family but deep down thinks that if she hadn’t been at practice she might have been able to save them). She will probably have some kind of redemption arc because I feel bad for her even though she is irredeemable (from what I’ve seen so far in the show).
Perdicus worked at the coffee shop but left to figure out how he could win Gabby’s heart (they grew up together and he’s loved her since he knew what love was but she’s always been...unsure). He’s gonna be in the thing as like...some kind of friend at the very least because Callisto did him dirty in the show and I liked him.
Iolus and Hercules MAY run the “rival” gym. “Rival” continues to be in quotes because although everyone in the town sees them (Xena and Herc) as rivals, they have nothing but respect for one another. Herc is in love with Xena (she thought she loved him too..once.) and Iolus THINKS he’s in love with Xena and then thinks he loves Gabby but realizes he loves Hercules; this may be a uniting factor for Xena and Gabby as they work to try and help Iolus overcome his insecurities and confess his feelings to Hercules (who will be startled but is bi as hell and will be really excited because he thought Iolus was SUPER into Gabby/straight as could be).
Autolycus is an art thief a la Cary Grant in Psych. He has a lot of money but lives relatively modestly and donate a fair amount to charities and to Gabby’s coffee shop, all under a pseudonym of course because it could never get out that he secretly wants to be Robin Hood more than anything in the world. Perhaps at some point the coffee shop has gone broke (maybe Krykus runs the shop and he’s an asshole who doesn’t care and ends up stealing a ton of money and running off into the night?????) and Autolycus (and Xena) band together to purchase the shop and put it to Gabby’s name (which upsets Gabby at first until she realizes that they were helped by the ENTIRE STAFF and a lot of the loyal customers because they love her and they love the changes she’s made to the shop).
I’m thinking...maybe one night, late, after Gabby had to stay to do inventory and order stock, she’s mugged. They have a gun and although she’s willing to give them what’s in her wallet, she fights back when they threaten to physically assault her and she ends up punched a few times. Now, depending on how dark I want this to be...she’s either beat up BAD and ends up joining the gym after Ephiny finds her and takes her to the hospital and demands she take better care of herself....but more likely (because it’s HOTTER), Gabby is saved by Xena, who had also been at her gym late doing an inventory and stock of the small pre-packaged bars and shakes she sells or something, important because maybe Gabby will start providing some kind of healthy snack as a thank you to Xena??? Anyway, Xena busts in after Gabby’s beat up and saves the damn day. Now!!! Either Xena falls in love INSTANTLY but keeps it way down because that’s who she is, or she simply thinks Gabby is cute (’m not decided) and is delighted at first when she sees Gabby show up to her gym. Gabby is enraged and frustrated that she wasn’t able to protect herself and Xena shows her how to redirect and channel her anger away from doing harm and into protecting herself.
This will EVENTUALLY and ultimately be a Xena x Gabby fic but I think it’s gonna take a while for Gabby to get there. When she realizes she loves Xena it will hit her like a sack of bricks and she won’t be able to breathe for a few moments as she takes in the woman who has become her best friend in the entire world and realizes that she absolutely loves her.
And that’s more writing or thinking about writing than I’ve done in eons but I wanted to get it down somewhere.

I had always thought "just kiss the girl" referred back to the kiss in The Quest. X just solves G's confusions with one clear kiss. I hadn't thought about the wedding kiss at all! Separately, what do you think would have happened if Callisto didn't kill Perdicus? Realistically (not what we want), what do you think G would have done?
Ooooh I think you’re right if it’s meant to be a reference at all! Bc that’s really then and there what Xena does! Will I ever be over how romantic Xena stepping forward with the first expression of pure joy we’ve ever seen on her face in the whole course of the show to that point with that simple “You don’t have to say a word”????
Had Callisto not intervened for us (and Gabrielle), I unoriginally think that the marriage would have started to fall apart after a few months when the realized that they’re not who they thought they were - either each other or their own selves - and that they rushed into things way too fast and made A Mistake. Gabrielle sure wouldn’t have been happy in the long term, I think we can all agree. And nobody wants to be married to somebody who’s unhappy being married to them, so Perdicus wouldn’t have been happy either.
Realistically is such a fraught word bc there’s realistically for this world and realistically for the world of the show. Like in terms of real world consequences for unhappiness in this marriage - would there have been kids before Gabrielle figured it out? Bc I can’t see Gabrielle abandoning her kids. But realistically for the show’s world, I think there would have been a repeat of Gabrielle sneaking away in the dead of night in Sins of the Past with her waking up Perdicus instead of Lila and them having a chat about All The Things when he lets her go with his blessing.
In my headcanon for such a scenario, he’d be a recurring character who Xena warms up to fully once he and Gabrielle have gotten an Ancient Greek divorce, and participates in shenanigans with them in the way Joxer and Autolycus do. He becomes Gabrielle’s best friend outside of Xena, and also becomes someone Xena commiserates with over Gabrielle’s foibles/the agony and ecstacy of being in love with her. He also gets married again and has a million kids, all of whom X/G are Cool Queer Aunts to.

I didn't want to blaze through XWP too fast so I decided to go back and basically... binge it all over again lmao - but this time with added people’s commentary (here here and here)  and now I feel I have firmer grasp on the show and can share some of my impressions of it (up until about the first half of s2):
callisto: at first she felt kind of flat as a character to me ngl. i was all about her existing since the start cause Xena deserves a female villain like this, but on a “fav character” level she just wasn't doing it for me until second watch. basically bc she has a Whedon-esque flavor to her personality that makes her implausible and unrealistic- and physically too she really didn't look to me like someone who could take on Xena, much less be an equal to her on the battlefield --- that said by now I have grown used to the aesthetics of the character and *~ have come to appreciate her for who she is ~*, and tbf like all Whedon-esque characters she gets some p amazing lines lol (”I don't drink I like to experience life in all its agonizing glory.”)
gabrielle: huge contrast from above cause i loved her SO MUCH. since DAY ONE much like xena.  it's crazy honestly cause the show is called “xena” and pop culture only ever talks about xena, u never expected the “””side-kick””” character to be SFawesome or this important to the story. Top class Companion material The Doctor would approve.
she is SO like... god idk how to describe it. but renee o'connor plays gabrielle with this kind of, very laid-back, eager... clownish personality? she has the genuineness that stand-up comedians aspire to. she tries to be funny and is really funny. like honestly i feel you rarely see young women portrayed like this even tho this is...legit how they can be lmao.... but yeah. she is an hilarious everyman bb-bean ray-of-sunshine and she cracks me up every time. and then with time she also evolves to fulfill a classic coming-of-age arc that is v satisfying... in short, the unexpected fav.
 similarly:
xena: also a totally unexpected new love of my life.  I totally thought she would be more...idk, more of a trope-y character. yet another femme fatale ... and that idea is what put me off watching XWP initially. but like gabrielle, she was not what i expected at all! despite the goth aesthetics she is full on a very vulnerable and emotionally damaged person (the show never hides away from that and the episodes that focus on this tend to be the best always). Even so that doesn't stop her from being  so cool and stoic and hot and so very #goals. tldr she is the sapphic icon and pulp hero we deserve.
joxer:  I'm worried a bit that from what I've heard around that joxer becomes more of a spotlight-hogger later, but at least for now i like him a lot: specifically I like that he genuinely wants to be a good friend for xena and gabrielle (one top moment for example in “Warrior...Princess...Tramp” where he is hilariously led to believe he is the cause of a rift between xena and gabrielle and goes like “XENA!!! WE MUST BREAK UP IMMEDIATELY!!! I CANT WRECK ONE OF THE GREAT FRIENDSHIPS!!!“ i was like !!!! dfsdf yes!!! well done joxer. well done).
everyone else: i wasn't expecting to like the male supporting characters this much also but most are genuinely good tbh (or at least, all of them have been tolerable). ares appearances so far guarantee the episode will be a fav, autolycus and salmoneus are hilarious in different ways, marcus was the best of the “a man in every port” love interests, etc... and ngl i also love having those guys around for episodes bc xena and gabrielle come across as extra couple-y when there's a guy third wheeling around lol
this show is all about the amazing characters really i love them all sm already.
that said although the driving force for me was and will be xena x gabs, the show did won me over on its own merits later. it looks very campy from afar (and it.. is) but it can also be a very sophisticated show with some damn clever writing. really the abed nadir in me loves the “legacy of tv” meta aspects of it as much as the shipping aspects.
fav eps of s1: Athens city academy of performing bards (!!! speaking of!!! the most meta oh ym god. what a clip show), sins of the past, cradle of hope, the reckoning, the royal couple of thieves, callisto, greater good, is there a doctor in the house,
least fav eps of s1: the titans, beware greeks bearing gits, death mask. not really terrible, but they are my least fav bc either they were too much of a slog in the middle, or too hetero by the end.
overall, i really loved s1 ... and that might be an unpopular opinion? lol but imo i simply think it has a magic that all origin stories have and that cant be replicated later on a tv show... (see: s1 of supergirl, elementary, etc). hell i like s1 so much that im even a bit anxious about the incoming plots im vaguely aware of from unavoidable spoilers (all the magical daughter characters and the flashback arcs and darknessss) but w/e, BRING IT ON i love the warrior princess im here for it all!!!

Somewhere in the multiverse there is one where season 4 of Buffy actually was good and The Gentlemen were the primary antagonists, here’s my vision for that:
1) the whole thing moves out of Sunnydale and to an entirely different locale and culture. It made zero sense for Buffy to be quite so disoriented by college in literally the same town she had been going to high school and destroying demons and vampires in for the past 3 years, but uprooting her from that and sticking her somewhere in the middle of nowhere, preferably the midwest or northeast coast? Not only would she be in a new environment but try dealing with vampires AND a blizzard.
2) in the town she moved to, The Gentlemen come every 50 years to take x amount of people away with them, a process which takes much longer than the single episode we got, and while stealing voices is still a big part of their deal, rather than removing hearts being their primary goal, this is part of the process of transforming someone into one of Them. Also the entire process takes much longer because as creepy as stealing voices is, it’s WAY creepier to have it start with one person lost their voice, then another, and then another, all with no memory of what happened. The locals have just accepted this after fighting back proved completely ineffective in the past, but Riley Finn, born and raised in this creepy little town and on tales of the monsters that stole away his mother’s favorite aunt and his paternal grandfather, is determined to fight back and is ready as soon as he hears about people being unable to talk.
3) Buffy and co were brought to this place by the migration of the forces of darkness after the Hellmouth in Sunnydale was destroyed—meaning that all the college plotlines never happen. There is not a huge university somehow existing in a spooky little midwestern town; all of them agreed that higher education could wait while they check out why exactly every evil thing on earth is being drawn to one spot in the middle of nowhere.
4) The Initiative, rather than being the single worst government organization in the history of ever, is instead Riley and his buddies with rifles trying to fight against all the evil that has always been a part of life there, but that has now become even more of a threat. They have never heard of the Slayer because they’re figuring all this out as they go, and rather than being all upset about someone joining them who knows how to fight, they’re all thrilled.
5) Faith never betrayed anyone and is still part of the gang, with Giles as a father figure who is more than a little bemused that the tough girl from the streets of Boston who acted like she never needed anyone’s help has now started calling him at 1:00 am or thereabouts to ask him things, sometimes dealing with specific creatures she’s fought but not understood, sometimes just stuff like “So G does the owl ever actually HELP AT ALL or do I just have to listen to him whine the whole game?” (and Giles has to debate whether or not to tell her that in King’s Quest V, the most useful things Cedric the Owl does are get captured, get horribly maimed, and get killed.)
6) This season also features a major crossover with two (as of 1999-2000) still ongoing shows: The X-Files and Xena: Warrior Princess, in which we find out such stunning revelations as Dana Scully is Buffy’s cousin and literally denies that she saw a vampire disintegrate in front of her, Fox Mulder met Giles while studying in England and the pair still have a rather love-hate relationship due to Giles’ insistence that aliens do not exist, Xena was a slayer whose watcher never quite explained exactly what she was supposed to be doing so she fought all evil rather than focusing on the supernatural, Autolycus escaped to the modern world and the FBI have been pursuing him for quite some time with zero success (think Neal Caffrey), and Joxer falls for Scully because he’s the type to solely stumble from unrequited love to unrequited love. Also Aphrodite Is Alive And Well In Beverly Hills.
7) Eventually it’s impossible to escape the fact that no one can talk and the season finale goes much like the single Gentlemen episode we saw, except Buffy has to rescue Willow and Giles from being transformed into Gentlemen in addition to destroying them forever. And of course, though they may have been driven from this town for good by the end, things are left on an ambiguous note as an emaciated hand closes the music box that first signalled their arrival…..
