Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, they heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. 4.15 Reflection

Today is Jackie Robinson Day.

We celebrate the day that Jackie first took the field as a fully-integrated teammate of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Twenty-six thousand-plus soaked in the historical moment at Ebbets Field as Jackie played first base and scored his first run. Beyond Jackie’s on-field achievements (Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, World Series Champion), he was a dedicated family man, honorable serviceman, astute businessman, and advocate for civil rights. 

The legacy of Jackie Robinson has truly shrouded me throughout my entire life. The Dodgers’ Ebbets Field reincarnated as Ebbets Field Apartments in 1962, and there my family soon took root. Jackie Robinson Playground, directly adjacent to the seven-building complex, functions as a home-away for thousands of community residents. Jackie’s name and portrait adorn the local primary school. In sum: he is here. 

Jackie’s pioneering stance against racism in baseball is the touchpoint on today, but I am even moreso reminded of Jackie's all-sport prowess -- he is still the only only UCLA student-athlete to letter in four different sports (baseball, football, track, and basketball). I am reminded of his bold refusal to submit to racism while a member of the US Army. Reminded of his superhuman strength to endure the intense, daily vitriol spewed at him as he sought to play baseball games and build a life. I am reminded of the Robinson family, who sacrificed comforts in order to make history and progress. 

In Jackie Robinson, we find a hero to lean on. Through the Jackie Robinson Foundation, we find dreams fulfilled, as thousands of students have benefited from the Foundation's mentorship and scholarship programs over the last five decades. At the close of this Centennial celebration, the long-needed Jackie Robinson Museum will open its doors to educate and empower new generations the world over.

Asteroid news: Three big asteroids will pass by earth this week ☄️🌎 One of them is as big as the Washington Monument. Let's find out what to expect.⠀ ⠀ As per the data compiled by NASA, the first one among them is the 361-feet asteroid '2016 PD1', which is going to fly around 2.7 million miles from Earth at a speed of 13,100 miles per hour. Classified as an Amor asteroid, 2016 PD1 does not intersect the Earth’s path. So, it cannot be considered as a potentially hazardous asteroid.⠀ ⠀ The next one, a flying rock, also known as 2002 JR100, is expected to approach Earth, on August 27. Travelling at a speed of almost 18,800 miles per hour, this asteroid is significantly faster and slightly smaller than 2016 PD1. This 269-feet long asteroid belongs to the group of Aten asteroids. Many of them are classified as potentially hazardous asteroids because, by definition, Atens are Earth-crossing asteroids. During the approach, 2002 JR100 will be approximately 4.6 million miles from the Earth’s center. That’s why this asteroid also cannot be identified as a dangerous one.⠀ ⠀ The last of this trio of asteroids that will fly closest to Earth also have the biggest diameter of around 525 feet. 2019 OU1 is racing through space at a velocity of 29,000 miles per hour and will approach Earth on August 28 at 6:36 am EDT. According to CNEOS, at the time of approach, this huge space rock will only be about 640,000 miles from our planet’s center.
