Warrior Nun AO3 Fic Stats

Last year for the WN fanzine, I put together some stats on AO3 fics, and I'm looking at doing a little refresh with S2 out.

I scraped data from AO3 using a script, so all the usual caveats apply (e.g. this is only AO3, doesn't represent the whole fandom, obviously centers around written fiction, my script is not logged in so it can't see locked fics, etc etc)

But here's a fun finding:

If it feels like there's been a fic explosion recently, it's because there has been. In May2021, there were just shy of 600 fics for Warrior Nun on AO3. As of this data extract (Dec5, 2022), there are now more than 1200 (so double) with the vast majority of those having been written post-s2 (Nov). Season 2 was released in Nov2022 and had 376 fics posted in that month, whereas season 1 was released Jul2020 and had 114 fics posted (with more days since it was Jul2 vs Nov10). And if you look at Dec we're on the same trend, with 68 fics posted as of Dec5, just near the beginning of the month. I'm not sure how the holiday period plays into AO3 posting stats in general, so Dec may not be that indicative, but it already far outstrips any previous month from the between seasons period.

Also want to call out that there are nearly ~9.7 MILLION WORDS of fic for WN posted as of yesterday. I don't have any other fandoms to compare to (not that fandom is a competition anyway), but that does sound like an awful lot of words to me (personal note, I've contributed about 40k of that). And I feel like we could hit 10M before the end of the year. I have seen authors that I recognize from other big fandoms joining in on the WN fun.

There has also been an increase in non-English fic being posted. Last time I checked it was only 7 non-English fics and I excluded them from my analysis. Now there are 36, with more languages being represented (Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Korean, and Chinese). This is still very small numbers, but proportionally is more than previous and might be a clue as to the international appeal of the show (at least for fic writers).

長年に渡って僕の身体のメンテナンスをしてくれ��いた吉本さんが事故で亡くなりました。肩が上がらなくなってしまったとき、原因不明の体調不良が続いたとき、働きすぎて筋という筋がバキバキになってしまったとき、声が出るのかどうかと不安な本番前、公演前夜、ゴッドハンドと呼ぶべき施術でいつも支えてくれました。

報道にあった「ホームに這い上がろうとしているところを」、この一文に崩れ落ちました。助けに行けるなら行きたい。今でもそう思います。

マネージャーやシモリョーとメールのやりとりをして、悲しいときには、同じ気持ちの人と話すだけで軽くなるのだと知りました。

ご家族のことを思うと言葉がありません。

最高の整体師であり、僕にとっては主治医でもあり、愉快な友人でした。

まったく整理がつきません。2020年はなんていう年なんだ。それでも振り絞って、彼の死後の幸福を祈ります。

Last summer, when summer was new...

Colorful doors, retro shop windows and pretty flowers in Whitstable, Kent. The little town is cute and very popular with tourists - we were overwhelmed by the crowds - don’t let these photos fool you, we go there early and later on the high street was quite packed. Understandable, as the place is 100% insta friendly, has a beach and is a hit with families. We didn’t eat there this time, but I’ve clocked many nice looking eateries too.
