Where We've Been

There was still snow on the ground for my last blog entry, so I guess it's time for some updates. Summer has arrived to the North Country, and this year, it doesn't want to leave. Along with warm temperatures, we've had more rain than I've ever experienced anywhere, I think. It rained so much, I didn't water my garden for most of July and August. The mosquitoes are absolutely thriving, which makes being outside almost intolerable—unless you're covered head to toe. Not ideal for hot and muggy days.

Back in May, the dog van's transmission started giving me trouble on a visit to New Jersey. I brought it to a local specialist (shout out to Robbin's Transmission) and while it took a few months, I have it back now and it's driving great. I didn't get to take as many trips down to New Jersey, like I had hoped, but I did manage to spend Labor Day weekend with friends and family there.

My garden was a big success this year. I somehow ended up with about a dozen squash and zucchini plants (I swear I planted cucumbers, too, but none materialized) which spawned my "free veggie cart" idea. Growing my own food and sharing it has brought me a sense of community that was sorely needed, especially in these "Trying Times". I'm still getting tomatoes, peppers, and kale almost every day, but the bulk of the garden has run its course.

Last Christmas, I received a better canning system from my sister and her fiance, along with a vacuum sealer and a food dehydrator from my parents. Even with giving away a bunch of vegetables, I still have a surplus, so preservation is in full swing. My freezer is stocked with vacuum sealed zucchini, squash, carrots, string beans, snap peas, and sweet corn. I've got canned beets, peppers, and pickles in the pantry. I've dehydrated some peppers and tomatoes with varying degrees of success.

I only got a handful of potatoes from my grow bag experiment; I think next year I'll try another method. I grew six lovely pumpkins and a bunch of bird house gourds. It always seems when I plant a variety pack, I ultimately end up with mostly one thing, but I did get a single speckled swan neck gourd and some other weird green thing. Next year, I need to stagger my planting so I have the pumpkins and gourds later. I'm hoping they'll last until October, though. The wild blackberries didn't do well this year, it seems they preferred last year's drought to this summer's monsoon weather. When my parents visited, we picked about a jar full that I'll use for pancakes and smoothies.

We lost the other ISA Brown chicken (Cheese, of the Macaroni and Cheese duo) this summer. I noticed she stopped laying and had a few symptoms of various possible issues. I attempted to treat her and she was still eating and evading me up until her last day. I suspect she may have had cancer, which is common in high egg producing breeds. Since her sister died of heart failure (best guess) before reaching maturity, I suspect that whole brood was genetically compromised.

Oh, that reminds me, I don't think I mentioned the two new chickens that joined the flock this spring. I picked up Bread and Butter, a pair of Easter Eggers, from a farm about an hour away. After losing Macaroni, I knew I wanted another big-sized egg layer to join the flock (PJ and Jean lay tiny eggs and not very often). It's recommended to introduce at least two birds, as a singleton may get harassed, so I got two cream colored ladies who lay beautiful green and blue eggs. They integrated with the flock without much fuss, and have been happy and healthy ever since. Morticia and Frosty have been reliable layers, PJ is as cute as ever, and Jean has been "broody"; she needs to be moved from the nesting boxes pretty regularly. Poor thing just wants to be a mom!

As for the dogs, it’s been a long off season. Atlas, fitting his namesake, has grown to be my biggest Siberian—and he’s only 9-months-old. So far he’s been a delightful pup, able to keep up with my more dominant dogs but doesn’t start trouble and knows when to surrender. He had his first few runs in harness last month, and as expected, he’s a total natural.

Willow has had an interesting summer. I noticed she was losing chunks of hair (more than the usual summer coat blow), mainly around her neck and shoulders. Upon further investigation, I found skin irritation right where I had applied Advantix a day prior. I took her to the vet, and the best we could figure was that she developed a new allergy to the topical preventative and from there, developed a little infection. I’m sure her thick fur and the humid weather made a perfect breeding ground for whatever was going on, though it never seemed to bother her.

I spent the next two weeks or so giving her topical and oral antibiotics, along with a few medicated baths which she tolerated but very much loathed. Her skin cleared up, but then a new weird thing started happening. She would have these little episodes, usually at bed time, where she’d pant heavily and wouldn’t settle. They freaked me out, which seemed to only make her worse. One night I almost brought her to the emergency vet all the way in Ithaca, I was so worried. Except the moment I got the leash out, she became her usual happy-go-lucky, perky self. After a midnight walk around our trail, she did finally relax.

My vet ran lots of tests on her, but everything came back perfectly healthy and normal. Diagnosis was another guess, but we think it was a combination of anxiety (she had these episodes when we went upstairs, where the bath is) along with some gastric distress. She’s a notoriously fussy eater, and while on the antibiotic, she was even less enthusiastic about meals. I now have her on one or two Famotidine (Pepcid) pills a day, which seems to be helping with her acid belly issues.

I’ve also dealt with a couple fights between the dogs this off season. Everyone is luckily OK, but I’ve learned that adding more dogs means scaling and changing our existing procedures (this is a very project manager-y way to explain it). For example, I won’t release all ten dogs into the large play yard anymore. There are too many personality dynamics and opportunities for problems to pop up. I’m also enforcing strict crate rules whenever there’s food around (human or dog), to avoid resource related aggression. The learning continues.

Looking forward, our 2021-2022 season is just now beginning, and there are still a lot of unknowns. We’re still in a pandemic, but with vaccines available, races and events are being scheduled. There are some other challenges we’ll be working around as well, but I’ll write more on that later.

Sassy is FIVE!

Welp, the girl child turned 5. It was almost a month ago but she is still, as of today, telling people several times a week that she had a birthday and is five now. So it’s still news around here.

Here was my FB post on her birthday:

Five. I told a friend today that five feels so much like "big kid" 😭 This is the year we send her off to kindergarten. I just can't. Not pictured...shopping as Elsa to pick out presents from Grandma and Papa ("I think everyone will think there is a REAL princess here"). She looked at EVERY ITEM on the shelves. (I HATE shopping, guys) A sprinkle doughnut, painting a little Elsa jewelry box with friends, park time, more friend time at home (she was stoked to have her friends with us all day!!), the library, a movie, pepperoni pizza and daddy found the moon in the telescope before she went to bed! And Corbin came down early this morning to make sure we had put balloons on her chair and to write her a note ("Happy birthday Savannah!!! I will do the silverware for you" 😍😍) He did her part of unloading the dishwasher for her. On this day 5 years ago one of my first questions after she FINALLY joined us in the delivery room was, "Definitely a girl??" Yup. Definitely. And definitely MY girl. Happy birthday my Savannah. We are all on our toes with you around and we wouldn't want it any other way.

Savannah’s personality is SO BIG. I often find myself telling people while we are out, “She’s a lot” with a sigh or an eye roll. Mostly because she is twirling and being loud or roaming around or just absolutely not listening to me. Corbin was so compliant. Don’t get me wrong, he can be very difficult, but when we are out he follows the rules, stays close to me and doesn’t cause a ruckus. Today in Kohl’s, Savannah lagged behind, sat on a giant sloth plush toy while I walked away, yelled, “NO!” at least twice, climbed up on the base of a mannequin while asking why "That lady doesn’t have a head?!” and continued reading a book across the checkout line while I called no few than 5 times for her to come back over to me. And that was AFTER the incident earlier in the day when we got home and she threw such a massive fit because I didn’t wait for her to check the mail (she came inside and took off her coat and shoes KNOWING we were about to walk to the mailbox) that she stomped outside to the edge of the street and SCREAMED, “I DON’T LIKE YOU!!!” for the whole neighborhood to hear. And then went in the bathroom and unrolled the rest of the toilet paper on to the ground “because she was mad”. (She spent QUITE a while learning how one cleans up TP that has been unrolled from the roll....) So yeah. She’s A LOT.

But. I’ve been reading a lot about how the words you use to describe your children has such a massive impact on them. I’ve always known that. In my brain. But my heart is taking notice. I don’t want her to think that she is too much for us to handle or is a nuisance. He massive personality is going to be one of her biggest strengths. It is our job to help her learn how to reign it in when necessary. But also to encourage her to be herself. Not mentioned above is how she delighted the couple ahead of us in line at Kohl’s by telling them, “I just had my birthday and I’m 5!” as they told me about their spunky kid who is now 25. Or how in Food Lion the other day she, unprompted, told an employee at the check out, “I love your skirt” She is unfiltered. Which means, at 5, we get the inappropriate right along with the sweet, beautiful and hilarious. Hopefully the filter will come. But I also have zero concerns that she will be bullied or taken advantage of. She won’t have any of that now and I’m certain she won’t have any of that ever. It took me about 27 years to find that voice. I hope she doesn’t lose that voice.

So. Moving on to more facts about Sassy (aka Van Van, aka Sassums, aka Van Van Q-zles”, she is in Ms. LaShauna’s 4 year old preschool class at APPLESeeds preschool. This is her last year there - kindergarten starts in July 2020! I can’t believe it. She does Kidokinetics this year again (this year it’s Mondays...she stays an extra 45 minutes after school ends and does a sports related activity with Coach John) A friend who observed her after school one day called her “The Mayor of preschool” .... it’s hilarious because it’s true. There are kids from 2-5 in this preschool and since she started at 2, kids of all ages have known her. I know that, at 2, that is likely because her name was ALWAYS being called for some reason 😂 And is probably still somewhat the case now. But she is also just very social and loves to talk to everyone in her presence. So on this particular day apparently several (a lot) of the kids and parents who walked by her that afternoon (she was staying for Kidokinetics so I wasn’t there) said goodbye to her by name. She has also developed a habit of calling someone in each of her circles “bestie” (there is one at gymnastics and at least one at preschool) .It’s so funny to hear things like that out of her mouth. She sounds like a teenager and it’s weird.

She just finished her 2nd season in soccer and is actually pretty good. She scored at least one goal in nearly every game. She shockingly also loved the social aspect of the whole experience. I take her to Sonshine Gymnastics Tuesday mornings for an hour of gymnastics. She wanted to go back after doing dance last year. She likes them both but has gotten really into gymnastics again. It will be interesting to figure out how we are going to do an activity for both kids once she is in school and her things also have to become after school activities. We’ll cross that bridge once we come to it.

Her favorite colors are pink and purple, she loves to watch Fancy Nancy, T.O.T.S., Puppy Dog Pals, Disney movies and recently, this slightly annoying show on Netflix called Masha and the Bear (which also has a few spin offs). There are worse things. She LOVES movies and we’ve see a ton considering her age. She can sit through a movie better than Corbin can at this point. Especially if she also has popcorn and M&Ms.

Favorite foods are pretty standard - mac and cheese, grilled cheese, fruit, But she is also a great eater when it comes to veggies - she loves avocado, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots and ranch and spinach. She does NOT love several of the meals I make right now - mostly to be difficult I think. She complains when I make chicken .. (have you met me...we only eat chicken and turkey around here) but loves mashed potatoes and generally loves the veggie. Except peas. She doesn’t like peas. Or beans for that matter. She can THROW DOWN on some sweets. Gets that honestly.

She gets motion sickness in the car if she reads/colors, gets super dizzy when she spins, isn’t afraid of heights or most anything dare-devil like, loves board games and card games, is super at playing pretend and loves to put on shows for us that involve singing and dancing routines.

For all my comments about how she is a lot (she IS a lot) I honestly don’t know what I’d do with a mild mannered girl. We are both passionate and we get each other. Even though sometimes (a lot of times) that involves screaming or being super frustrated). It’s always cliche’ but I genuinely can’t believe she is 5. We have 2 big kids. And in 8 months we’ll have 2 ELEMENTARY kids. Sometimes I feel like I’m counting the minutes until she is in school full time but I also recognize that we only have a little bit of full time left together. And the sadness about how big she is (how big both of them are) is very real. But, all part of life. Onward to the year of five!

Questionable Places I’ve Slept

Day 10

It’s that oh so lovely day of the week again - rest day. Rest day, I hate you. Essential but I’d rather be out running. It’s okay, my girlfriend and I have a substantial walk planned this afternoon and a bit of retail therapy to take my mind away from the lack of endorphin. Also, I’ve started recording a song that I plan on releasing for next week’s upload. Exciting times.

Last week I posted “My Greatest Story” and I thought that, seeing as on my rest day I get that little bit longer to write the post, I would delve into some of the other life stories that I think are worth telling.

Being in Ghouls has come with its rewards, despite it being the aim to take it as far as we can, it still feels surreal to think that playing music has taken us to the US twice (3 times if you include the tour in a couple of weeks), Europe countless times and more recently, Australia! That said, it hasn’t come without it’s hardships and through the years we have done some pretty hilarious D.I.Y tours. Despite the romanticism behind the idea of 'being on the road’, ‘living out the van’ and ‘sleeping on floors’ - it can get pretty grim. These days, I’m all about the Air B’n’B lifestyle. An athlete has to look after himself.

So, in no particular order, here are some of the more hilarious and questionable places we’ve had the pleasure of calling a ‘bed’ for the night:

1. Paris, France - July 2012. “A student hall’s fire escape”. This was the first time the band went abroad. We were young and nothing like the band we are now and even had a few different members. Young and ready for anything, we had a call from a friend in another band who said there was a last minute support slot open for a gig in Paris, that was the very next day! I don’t really know what we were thinking, being the naive youth we were, we booked the Megabus for the following morning headed direct for Paris.

We had no plan for accommodation other than “We’ll find somewhere”. The show was quiet but we were high on life. As if we were in Paris to play a show, with 24 hours notice. As the night came to a draw, we gathered on the banks of the river Seine with no idea as to where we were going to sleep. Our drummer of that time, suddenly appeared with two very nervous looking students who had agreed that we could stay in the fire escape of their halls building. Despite their suspicious glances to one another, our hosts were very kind to us and gave us an assortment of french snacks to go with our fire escape dwellings. It was literally a spiral staircase that ran the back side of a tall building in central Paris. Made to, quite literally, escape a fire - not ideal for the 7 of us that were there but I don’t recall it being a bad sleep.

2. Sheffield, UK - August 2013. “An old lady’s Marijuana horde”. In the summer of 2013, we all happened to have the whole month of August off. We were trying to raise funds to record our first album through a crowd funded campaign - seizing the opportunity of the time off, we booked ourselves a whole month’s tour, 30 days long, to help raise these funds. The tour was called the “Can We Crash At Yours Tour” and, we did just that. Played a show almost every night with nowhere booked to stay, hoping someone would be kind enough to let us “crash” at theirs. It actually went surprisingly well and plenty of lovely people gave up their sitting rooms and sofas for a bunch of over-excited musicians.

There were, however, a few nights on that tour in which the crowd at the shows weren’t, let say, the ideal band-friendly-stay-at-mine-and-we’ll-make-breakfast tomorrow dream that we’d had in our minds. There was one night in particular, about mid-way through the tour, in Sheffield. We’d played what I recall as being a sort of pub/venue, announcing on stage that we needed a place to crash. A slightly haggard old woman came forward and said we’d be more than welcome to sleep in her living room.

Upon arriving at the flat above a kebab shop in the Sheffield suburbs, we were greeted with the distinct smell of cannabis. It didn’t take long to see why, there were nuggets of weed everywhere! On the shelves, on top of the toilet, down the sides of the sofa, in jars in the kitchen, everywhere you can think of - weed nuggets. She immediately lit a joint as soon as we got there and started rambling about how she didn’t need ‘nout but a coffee and a spliff” to be happy.

I don’t smoke weed, nor do I have any interest in it - it’s not something I frown upon or judge people for, but that night I had to endure a good 6/7 hours of second hand stench - I definitely woke up questioning why some lamp shades are spherical.

3. Greensboro, NC, USA - October 2016. “Tap-out wherever, dude”.

I think this might be one of the worse nights sleep I’ve ever had, made worse because we were trapped in a foreign country with no alternative. When we’re in the UK, we know we’re never that far from somewhere we know - a friend or relatives house. Even in Europe now, we know enough people that I’d feel we could get ourselves out of a sticky situation. Plus, we’re all working adults now, so we usually book accommodation - #DIYbutwithhotels. However, this was our first time in the USA and touring somewhere unfamiliar on a budget for the first time always comes with a few hairy situations.

We played a show in Greensboro, North Carolina, mid-week in a pizza/dive bar style place. It was empty except for a couple of pizza bros who looked as though they’d have had a great time at the flat in Sheffield. Our host was a gentleman called Graham, who was playing in another band. Once the gig finished, which was a lot later than we’d expected due to Graham’s band not conforming to the conventional 3-minute song standard and instead opting for 12/15minute epics (which weren’t epic, to say the least). We headed to Graham’s place, detouring via a gas station due to Graham and his fellow band mates having the “munchies”.

We arrived at Grahams “pad”, which reminded me of the scene when Marty McFly goes back to the future, to his neighbourhood and Biff has taken over. Once inside the house, we were greeted by a room in which there was one sofa, a floor that had never seen a vacuum, and a man sat as close to a television as you can possibly get, playing Call of Duty. He was yelling his head off, down a head set at fellow online players in a thick southern American accent. Graham’s words were “just tap-out wherever guys”. We were about a week into what had already been a hectic tour, I was fresh off the back of my Brooklyn Half Marathon win, “tapping out” was never going to happen with our friend Cliff, the gentleman yelling at the screen, in that room. Also, where exactly were we supposed to ‘tap out’. Graham said we were welcome to the “sofa in the yard” - which was an old sofa in his garden. I decided to opt for sleeping in our rented Nissan Quest, which was full of gear.

I managed to clear a space just big enough for me, tucked into the fetal position and just preyed that the night pass by. Several hours later, we woke up, hurried our way out of there and sought refuge in a nearby iHop. Saved by pancakes.

I’ll leave it at that for now. There is more to tell but I have to go out and get some clothes. Day 10 of 30 on the daily blog. I am seriously considering to keep this going beyond 30 days and may even purchase a website domain as incentive. If anybody has any advice on web hosting for bloggers then please let me know.
