Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood – In Case The World Changes Its Mind (Full Album)
Medeski, Martin & Wood are among the busiest acts in the music biz. To celebrate their 20-year anniversary in 2011, the group has been releasing its latest album, 20, track by track. Also this year, following the grand Radiolarians series, they decided to issue its DVD portion, Fly in a Bottle, as a separate package; finally, there’s MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes Its Mind, an utterly kinetic recording from their 2006 tour with jazz guitar boss John Scofield. In 1997 the trio backed Sco on his stellar A Go Go album. He returned the favor in 2006 by playing on MMW’s Out Louder; this tour followed. The double disc collects performances from both recordings and a couple of others. Fans of MMW or Scofield know what to expect from this quartet on record, but heard in a live setting — and in particular this one — the music is actually tighter; it’s fiery, with ideas arising from collective energy and almost symbiotically folded into prearranged tunes. On disc one, check Scofield’s punky “Deadzy,” Chris Wood’s groove-laden “Cachaça,” or the title track, apparently composed on the spot for the Out Louder sessions and stretched to nearly 13 minutes here. As for disc two, things kick off with Scofield’s “Little Walter Rides Again.” There is deep interplay between Wood’s backbone-slipping bass and Sco’s angular stereo guitar. John Medeski’s fills and time-stretching solo are taut, but it’s the orgy of breaks from Billy Martin that makes it pop. The group also stretches into the abstract on “Hanuman,” where improvisation flows freely among the quartet members. The groove is much more subtle and spacy on Sco’s “Southern Pacific,” with its strolling country expressionism melded to jazz’s in-the-moment sense of spontaneity, but it’s there in spades. Things close with a virtually screaming “Hottentot,” where all the stops get pulled, sending this set off on the deep jazz-funk tip. David Kent’s recording is flawless, and Jamie Saft’s fine editing and mixing make these tunes — compiled from numerous dates — feel like a single show in flow and dynamic. MSMW Live: In Case the World Changes Its Mind isn’t merely a document of a historic tour; it’s a solid entry in the catalogs of both artists and a killer listen top to bottom (AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek).

The Spider By Lars Kepler

The Spider
By Lars Kepler
Translated by Alice Menzies
Zaffre Books
Publication Date: 25 May 2023
This is the ninth novel in The Killer Instinct Series co-written by Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril under the pseudonym Lars Kepler. Like the earlier books in the series, the story's primary focus is on the investigations of Detective Saga Bauer who has appeared in all their books and also his former colleague Saga Bauer, who, while a regular character, was absent from the previous novel, The Mirror Man. As a reader of some, but not all of the earlier books in the series, it is clear that while they follow the evolution of Linna's life, some are easier to read as standalone novels than others.
In the case of The Spider, there are references to earlier investigations in The Sandman and Lazarus which featured a psychopath called Jurek Walter. It is perhaps not too much of a spoiler to reveal that Linna and Bauer receive a warning which suggests that there is another killer on the loose who is inspired by Walter's previous atrocities with the ominous threat that there will be nine victims. When the first victim is discovered, the death is a particularly ritualistic killing which resembles the methods a spider would use to kill its victim. The story evolves into a race against time where Bauer and Linna must try to prevent the murderer from reaching its intended prey as the indications are that the final victim is to become Linna himself. The murders also allow Kepler to present some grisly endings to many of the peripheral members of the investigation team and other related characters that have appeared in earlier stories.
The novel works on a formula that previous readers of Lars Kepler will be familiar with, short punchy chapters where the narrative often switches between Linna and Bauer with occasional switches to other characters. This becomes a giveaway that the character is likely to find themself in immediate danger from a perpetrator with apparent almost superhuman strength and ability to interpret their possible moves. It makes for an exciting read where the reader is often compelled to continue reading in order to discover what happens next as soon as possible. The deaths are often graphic with the hunt and kill described in detailed descriptions. In terms of satisfying the expectations of existing readers of the series, The Spider can certainly be considered another notable success by Lars Kepler. For example, there are very few authors that could describe how a routine police visit to a rural yoga camp becomes such a significant incident as Kelper does!
For readers interested in picking up a Lars Kepler book for the first time, I would perhaps suggest The Mirror Man or one of the earlier novels from the series as I've mentioned, this book not only refers to two earlier stories but also reveals particular events from those novels. At times that can be a little perplexing as by contrast, The Mirror Man becomes linked to the first novel of the series The Hypnotist. For a devout reader of the series this means that there are surprises and welcome returns to incidents in earlier novels but it can become a complicated web for the unsuspecting occasional reader.
By contrast to some of the more traditional Nordic Noir authors, there is very little social consciousness in Kepler's novels, nor is there a deep examination of the motive of the serial killer. The novels also frequently require a slight suspension of reality in terms of the terrible acts that one person is physically, mentally and emotionally able to do. If you love the thrill and chase of a cat and mouse game between the authorities and a serial killer which involves a high and varied body count then The Spider will certainly be one of the standout reads of the year for you. If that's the case, it won't be your last read of Kepler's work, but for the reasons given, it perhaps also shouldn't be the first.
Many thanks to Tracy Fenton at Compulsive Readers for inclusion on the blog tour and to Zaffre Books for an advance copy of The Spider. Please look out for other reviews of The Spider on the blog tour as shown on the above image.

The Sandman by: Lars Kepler
4.5 stars out of 5

The #1 internationally best-selling thriller from the author of The Hypnotist tells the chilling story of a manipulative serial killer and the two brilliant police agents who must try to beat him at his own game. Late one night, outside Stockholm, Mikael Kohler-Frost is found wandering. Thirteen years earlier, he went missing along with his younger sister. They were long thought to have been victims of Sweden's most notorious serial killer, Jurek Walter, now serving a life sentence in a maximum security psychiatric hospital. Now Mikael tells the police that his sister is still alive and being held by someone he knows only as the Sandman. Years ago, Detective Inspector Joona Linna made an excruciating personal sacrifice to ensure Jurek's capture. He is keenly aware of what this killer is capable of, and now he is certain that Jurek has an accomplice. He knows that any chance of rescuing Mikael's sister depends on getting Jurek to talk, and that the only agent capable of this is Inspector Saga Bauer, a twenty-seven-year-old prodigy. She will have to go under deep cover in the psychiatric ward where Jurek is imprisoned, and she will have to find a way to get to the psychopath before it's too late--and before he gets inside her head.
“Jurek will do anything he can to escape,” Joona says in a somber voice. “You cannot let that happen. You’re like a sister to me, Saga, but it would be better if you died than if he got out.”
I usually cannot stand to read a book in the middle of a series without reading the prior novels first. However, I made an exception with The Sandman and I'm very happy with my choice. Although this is the fourth in Kepler's series, in the US it is being released first. I decided to go with it after reading reviews that said I'd have no problem. I am pleased to report they were right. The Sandman can be read as a standalone. Good luck, though. Because I now need to read all of Kepler's other novels. I'll be reading The Hypnotist in July.
This book was dark and twisted and quite possibly, dare I say it, fucked up! Damn, is it a great read! There are some scenes that get graphic and violent. I did find myself cringing at times, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me. The chapters are short and keep the plot moving rather quickly. Each chapter something happens to make it impossible not to read the next. Trust me when I say this is a very fast-paced book. There are multiple perspectives giving us extra insight to everything. I think I enjoyed Saga the most!
When Mikael Kohler-Frost is found wandering on a railroad bridge, Inspector Joona Linna is called in. The thing is..Mikael went missing thirteen years earlier with his sister. There were officially declared dead seven years ago. Where has Mikael been all this time?! And where is his sister?
The killer, Jurek Walter, has been locked up in a secure criminal psychology unit at a hospital. But Mikael says his sister is still alive and being held captive by "The Sandman." This was Joona Linna's case. And it's a personal one for him. No one scares him, or anyone, more than Jurek Walter. But they have to send someone in to get answers out of him if they want to find Mikael's sister. The plan is to send in Inspector Saga Bauer undercover as a psychiatric patient, but she'll have to work quickly.
I was glued to the pages. My only complaints involved the couple of loose ends that I'm sure are resolved in the sequel. Oh and at one point, one character was just plain stupid out of nowhere. It's surprising this has two authors with how it reads. I am very excited to read more from the husband/wife writing team known as Lars Kepler.

Lazarus is the 7th book in the Joona Linna series by Lars Kepler. “Someone is killing criminals in Europe - criminals with apparent ties to Joona. He thought he was rid of Jurek Walter - Sweden’s most notorious serial killer. But it looks like he might be back - even though evidence points to his death. Joona is convinced Jurek is back but no one believes him. So he must protect his daughter at all costs. And even that may mot be enough...” This was my first book from the Joona Linna series. And Jurek might be the scariest fictional killer I’ve seen 😱 Jurek is relentless and will kill whoever is in his way. This book is long, but fast-paced. You will find yourself yelling at some characters. Some shocking deaths will leave you stunned. And the ending will have you catching your breath 😮 Will he or won’t he? Fans of Nordic crime fiction will enjoy this one. Now excuse me while I go find the rest of Kepler’s books. Thanks to @netgalley and @mcclellandstewart for the ARC. ALLMUSIC STAFF PICK
Walter Egan Not Shy 1978 Contemporary Pop/Rock The second collaboration between this California rocker and producer Lindsey Buckingham -- with backing vocals by Stevie Nicks -- netted the smash "Magnet And Steel," a number eight hit universally considered one of the finest singles of 1978. It may have condemned the songwriter to one hit wonder status, but shouldn't have. It's a flawless collection of sunny, hooky rockers and glossy ballads about the good life in Southern California during one of its most celebrated -- and coked out -- eras.

Swedish serial killer thriller 🕵🏻♀️ + large latte ☕️ = lets do this, Halloween weekend 👊🏻 • This beauty has been sitting on top of my TBR for a couple weeks now, but I knew I wanted to save it for Halloween weekend 👻 and now it’s finally time!!! 😱 THE SANDMAN by Lars Kepler releases from Knopf in March 2018, and is the chilling story of a manipulative serial killer and the two police inspectors who must beat him at his own game 😳🙌🏻 SO. EXCITED. • Quick backstory: Lars Kepler is a HUGE name in Scandi crime. It’s actually the pen name of a husband and wife writing duo 👫 and they are HUGE around the world. I first tried a Lars Kepler book a number of years ago - before CBTB! - but I tried reading it while in college/super busy with class work, so I never finished it 😂🙈 so NOW I am trying again, and I am so excited!! 🎉 • THE SANDMAN begins with the discovery of a young man, Mikael, who is found emancipated and wandering late one night. 13 years earlier, Mikael and his sister went missing, assumed to be victims of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, Jurek Walter - who is now serving a life sentence in a maximum-security psychiatric hospital. But now Mikael is back, and he tells the police that his sister is still alive, and is being held by someone known as The Sandman. 😱 Detective Joona Linna was the one to put Jurek behind bars, and he always suspected Jurek had an accomplice... now he and his brilliant colleague Saga Bauer must find a way to get the truth from Jurek before it’s too late—and before Jurek can get inside their heads. 😳 • Okay, this sounds amazing right?! 😱 this is one heck of a long book (see my stories 😂) and I could NOT be more excited to dive in!! 🤓 (at South Slope, Brooklyn)
