What tag should I use?

Ah, seems this has escaped containment then. You can find them HERE!

Will you be doing anything on Twitter/other social media?

We considered it! However, as other social media sites have proven unreliable (especially lately), we'll be hosting the event only on Tumblr. However, you're welcome to post your work wherever you like! Just understand that without a Tumblr post we can't exactly RB your entry.

Can I do _ for the event?

Yes. Yep. That too. Seriously, so long as it focuses on Perc'ahlia (and is appropriately tagged to avoid spoiling people), you can do it. Cosplay, inspired recipes, beadwork, podfic, go wild! Well, with the caveat that no hateful content will be permitted - don't use a joyous event to rain on someone else's parade or promote hatespeech, alright?

Is NSFW content allowed?

Given the ship in question and just how canonically horny they are for eachother - yes! However, we request that you tag this content as #nsfw and use the appropriate content filter on it. If posting in the Discord server, keep it to the 18+ chat. Be mindful of potential minors in fandom space + people browsing content in public.

I want to participate but haven't watched Campaign 1!

We welcome fans of The Legend of Vox Machina with open arms. As a result, it's requested that campaign fans do their best to avoid spoiling show fans for anything beyond what Season 2 has shown (Umbrasyl's defeat). That means late Campaign 1, the oneshots and any mention of them in other campaigns should be tagged as #cr1 spoilers (using just this tag for simplicity). Show fans, if you want to remain unspoiled, I recommend you block this on Tumblr and mute spoilery channels in the server.

Wait - what might get spoiled for me here?

The #cr1 spoilers tag should broadly cover anything TLOVM hasn't yet, but do note that Percival and Vex'ahlia pop up in Campaign 3 and so some fics might contain mild spoilers for the events of that campaign and the decades between their epilogue and now.

Is there an AO3 collection for the fanfics?

Yes! HERE it is, ready and waiting for your fics! If interested in last year's fics (which definitely deserve some love), you can find them over HERE!

Does my submission have to fit one of the prompts?

That would be ideal, yes! Anything freeform should be posted on Day 5 for Free/Random prompts. But fitting the prompt can be very loose - maybe you just use the word as a motif, or you take it in an entirely unexpected direction. We want to encourage creativity and fun more than anything else.

I don't know what to do for the Free/Random day!

How did you choose the prompts?

Prompts were selected by a combination of admin discussion and voting in our Discord server to try and ensure a good mix of evocative prompts (we see y'all voting disproportionately for the Scars prompt! We see it!).

You can find the list and links to individual tags HERE. Given last year was our first year, we unfortunately didn't think to tag Day 1 until after the fact (we'll need to go and clean that up).

Why late September?

On September 29th, 2016, the Critical Role episode 'Passed Through Fire' aired, which features an iconic Perc'ahlia moment (no spoilers for show fans!). Following Burr's poll last year on which scene is most iconic for the pairing, we decided to have the week celebrate the anniversary of that episode. And, with TLOVM S3 airing the next week, who knows - we might get the animated version to go with it soon! ;3

Is it okay if I only do one prompt?

This event is intended to be relaxed and fun - one entry, or seven, or fourteen, however many you want! We've tried to announce the event earlier this year, to allow for more time for everyone to work on their entries, so please don't feel pressured to do them all the week of. And if you can't finish on time, there's no pressure: late submissions will still be RB'd and added to the AO3 collection. Mind you, after a month or two we might stop checking the blog and tag regularly, so your best bet is to @ us or post in the Discord server!

experience in RP — I've been RPing a little over 6 months, mostly as Law and in the OP community.

best experiences — Honestly, just finding the people that click with me and understand the particular quirks of mine I worry about (in terms of how my muse works/inconsistent reply speeds) or have the same takes on muses and canon events and whatnot - and just that overall feeling of... "omg, this is one of my people!" These are the people that GET when I decide "LUFFY ENERGY: I've decided you're now my best friend" and they just go with it.

pet peeves / dealbreakers — I don't think I have many! Probably just the standard "bad etiquette" stuff - godmodding, rb karma, etc.

muse preference ( fluff, angst, smut ) — I love all 3 of those things (although smut depends on us having an active ship or having at least discussed interest in exploring one). Given Law's backstory and tendency to have a lot of thoughts, angst is just a given, and I love leaning into that and introspection.

plot or memes — I'm open to both but I generally prefer a bit of plotting. I guess it's because I'm still newer to RP and haven't learned to fully tap into my creativity yet, but if things are too open (or too 'literally anything could happen') sometimes it makes my brain shut down like "oh man which of the many options do I go with." So I do like to have basic ideas for interactions or an outline for heavier verse stuff - or at least a relationship with the mun where I can be like "Okay, so I've got a couple of things I'm considering for this meme you sent - do you have a preference?"

long or short replies — Long! Again - Law, angst, introspection. Many thoughts. Lots of words.

best time to write — Early morning for me. I'm usually up at around 5 or 6am my time and enjoy the quiet hours before the rest of the world gets moving to work on replies!

are you like your muse — In some ways! Law is a lot smarter than me, but we're both introverted, awkward, probably come across as rude even when it's not the intention, easily exasperated...

the community feature which i talked about before feels like its gonna be one of the site’s main selling points in the future. its basically a forum feature to use on the site

you can make discussions and as long as you’re a part of the community, you can reblog to it as well! i can’t figure out how to do that. when i click the join button nothing happens except the button goes dark like it’s being highlighted over and clicking anywhere else makes it look the way it was before, whereas i get a screen for the Flag button. i’m... kind of hoping i didn’t try to join femslash and fallout’s communities 50 times oops.

but because i made a ZLS group (”Adabana Necromancy: A Zombieland Saga Community”) i can reblog stuff to there. ideally members should only RB whats relevant but... you can see the problem, right?

Communities have their own admins. right now all groups are public, but in the future we’ll have the ability to make Communities to be private as well, or have them public for anyone to join but you need an admin to approve it. so to an extent? part of the success of Communities is gonna be a mixture of competent mods and also pillowfort’s staff. obviously if one person is being a shitlord then its up to the Community admins to kick them. but if a bunch of trolls join just to try to spam it, in addition to Admins dealing with it its only fair to the userbase that the admins intervene as well.

if nothing else, if you do RPing, the forums seem like the best bet. i wasn’t, you know, able to actually look at how forum threads go... but I imagine its just one person replying after the other and you can use your RP icons and the like? that’s the one thing i’d have to say to anyone concerned about RPing as a hobby on pillowfort

so yeah. once they work on it more its absolutely gonna be a thing that kind of defines pillowfort from its competition like tumblr and twitter. i think... by the final version though, privacy settings should be a thing for it. i don’t think its gonna work out well if by the time of the big grand public opening and anyone can join and people can just... kind of raid Communities then that’s bad

This is based off of a twitter thread (and ofc the idea from the movie with the original title) found by a fellow EngUp admin on another platform and it’ll take aspects of each video and incorporate it into one big fanfic. This fanfic will chronicle the high school life of you, the reader, and the 12 most life changing crushes. There will be three boys per each year and each member posted will follow the other in terms of time. I’ve posted the masterlist, which can be found linked above and the updates of these parts will be noted in my monthly updates schedule! I really hope you all enjoy it, I’ve spent quite some time figuring out the logistics behind the whole story and fitting it all together and I’m really proud of where it’s going so! ok well to those who dont know- i used to be an operator on a realm- which is like- 2nd place to an admin- and was- the equivalent to a god in the peoples eyes

now- being an operator comes with- HUGE perks- like uh- I doubt any of you know what this is- or if it even exists here- but creative mode- s'like- optional immortality plus acess to- infinte of anything at all times- but ANYWAYS

operator gives you acess to commands- which are- the things you put in the command block- im gonna be honest- i dont know too much about how command blocks work- hoops used 'em most of the time- and i only used em once or twice before we found out how o use commands withou the block-

from what litte i remember- they were these big block that were a tan pinkish orange kinda colour- and thay were- kinda rocky- and actually i can just draw it i'll rb this with the drawing later

it's hard to explai how to use it- im not sure if its different for other people or not but - i just kinda-touch the par with the blinky bitc and uh- imput the command- i dont know how to explain it other than that

my best guess on how ir works is thats its kinda like a uh- a conductor type thing for the commands?- if thats the right word- so you put in the command and then it does the command for you- and there's differnt kinds of command blocks too but i only even used the tan one-

but i've seen people set command block to have acertain command and then attack a lever to it and anyone- operator or not- pulls the lever it does the set command- but only operators and admins can actually imput the command i think

once we found out how to do commands without the block though we'd just type the comand in out euivilent of a comm and it did- alotta shit- i have- all the commands written down in my notebok since that was easier than just memorizing them all- if any of you want the llist i'll give it t'you there's nothing you can do with'em anyways

As I sit in my beautiful city apartment, sitting 48 floors (well, really 38 floors) above ground level looking over the vast and sprawling western Sydney suburbs, it is crazy to be writing another blog post summarising the year that has been, especially after reading last year’s 2019 post.

2020 was a wild ride, and it’ll be fascinating to see how 2020 is remembered globally as a year, and how much of the world wide chaos will continue into next year, given that after all, 2021 is just another collection of days strung after these has passed.

We rung in 2020 in a beautiful big house in the blue mountains with 14 amazing people, crawling down the hallway as slugs, drinking, doing too many drugs, and purely in love with life and each other.

We kicked off the year as we spent 2019, with lots of gigs, big plans of travel, and lots of social outings.

We went to unify in January with Ritchie, Brad, Maddie, Blake, and Elliot. it was the worst weather we have ever encountered there, and that’s a huge call for unify. The new venue was awesome but the 50km+ winds and torrential rain meant lots of time under the gazebo holding it together and listening to enter shikari on the speaker. There was glimpses of festival vibes, seeing Kubla Kahn, Knocked Loose, The Ghost Inside, and Columbus, but also lots of missing shows and general carnage. Also out tent leaked damaging all of our things but still, I wouldn’t have missed unify for the world. There was an amazing crew, with Steph and DJ, fruit and nut, and many other amazing people - what more can you ask for?

We were lucky enough to go to see Dealer, Tiny Moving Parts, Hellions, Crystal Lake, Northlane, and Trophy Eyes, and The Brave,

I started baking a lot more this year. Celia bought me the beautiful Christmas gift to do a baking stall in Glebe markets, which I fortunately managed to do in Feb. It was so fun and we sold so much and it just invigorated my love of making tasty things for people I love.

Keira and I also went to a yoga retreat earlier in the year which was awesome, it was great to spend time with her, even finding out she was pregnant! This year in October the family was changed forever in the most beautiful way with the birth of little Baby Ellie. My parent’s also sold their family home to move down to Canberra which was a big adjustment for me and us but they’re all so happy down there together and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to work from Canberra quite a bit to spend time with the family.

So now we get to the COVID summary I guess, it’s 2020 after all. In Feb we were kind of joking about this whole COVID thing, not understanding the scale of what was about to change in the world. I started working from home on the 14th of March 2020 and have only been back to the office for one day in between waves of outbreaks. It was a huge and at times very lonely and sad year having to cope with the few month lockdown, closures of gyms, and not being able to see friends. While in lockdown, I started to learn to make peace with being alone and being still. I started making bath bombs, cross stitching, playing lots more fish game, and finding crafts to make me happy. It has given me a huge appreciation of how hard the introvert’s life must be living in an extrovert world, being being forced into a introvert life for months was draining and exhausting. I spent a lot of time at F45 bootcamps and walking around the harbour looking at fish, listening to Enter Shikari and Bright Eyes.

The year made a lot of people weird in ways I’ve never seen before. Something like the Black Lives Matter protest is a good example. It was a fantastic thing that people were out screaming on the streets about inequality for racial groups and for indigenous rights, but somehow this became a polarising issue. People started denying COVID, becoming anti vaxers, Blake just didn’t reply to be for 6 months, and I feel like the left and right are so extreme and seperate now with the crazy media and information spreading, it’s interesting to watch. I feel like in the past I wouldn’t have even known my friend’s clear political stances, but this year, it’s top of mind for everyone and discussed frequently and fuck me it’s hard to be friends with literally anyone who sympathises with the right. I guess locking people up in their homes for a year does crazy things to them. But at least Trump got voted out, there’s always good things to focus on I guess.

Between waves Sydney opened up again to seeing friends. We forged a new little group of Jake and Jami, Matt and Jordan, and extra people at different times, but it’s sweet as it’s the first time that Ritchie and I have really made friends together and it’s so lovely having a new home with these left wing inner west emos that I didn’t know I’ve always needed. Celia and Tash have been beautiful constant support this year again and I’m so grateful for such amazing humans to share my highs and lows with.

I started seeing Chrissy in June this year, once gyms opened again and I wanted to start building some muscle and curves and because I realised I liked lifting heavy stuff more than cardio. It genuinely changed my life. I’m eating more than ever and feeling great in my body, and it’s amazing being focused on performance goals rather than aesthetic for the first time in 10 years. I competed in my first power lifting comp, where I squatted 64kgs, benched 39kgs and deadlifted 100kgs. I know these aren’t huge numbers but I was so proud of my little body for being able to do that (with body weight of 58kgs), and given that I’ve never thought of myself as a strong person. I haven’t missed a workout (except when I got my wisdom teeth out) since I started with her and I am proud of how I’m transforming my body and mindset.

We spent a weekend in May in Jervis Bay with my family for our birthdays which was amazing and the start of what I think will be a new family tradition. I really love my family so much and feel so damn lucky that I enjoy spending time with them so much.

We moved homes in June too, upgrading to a 2 bedroom and multiple balcony amazing apartment in the city, just up the road from our old place. Moving was so much damn work but this place is incredible and so much more amazing than I ever thought I’d live in. I’ll always look back at the Waldorf affectionately, as a beautiful place that we created a home in for the first time and shared with so many amazing friends. But damn this place is gorgeous.

Work was pretty crazy but also not at all. I’ve been at RB again all year this year, that makes almost 2 and a half years which is pretty big for me! I started the year by winning the extra miler award, and being generally very well celebrated as CSM, before being moved to being a NAM. Working under Dani was awful, and the job was literally the worst thing I could ever imagine someone having to do. The bullshit and admin and hours and pressure are something I would never wish on anyone, and after having frequent panic attacks and throwing up out of stress at Hyde park, I realised that life is too short do a job that makes you miserable. While it’s unfortunate that this took me 27 years to work out, I think it’s great that I got there and learned a very valuable lesson in work life balance and happiness. I had to resign from RB at that point, but conveniently, Amna resigned on the same day, making an empty role as CSM for Coles. I pushed for a senior title and now have an awesome job. While working under Chris isn't ideal in some ways, I have a boss that cares about me and a colleague (Ellie) who is smart and awesome. I’m happy working in an interesting and great job that makes me excited do go to work. And even though it won't be my forever job, it’s a great ‘for now’ job that I enjoy, getting great experience on the resume, and that will hopefully take me overseas some day.

I ended every other blog with hopes and dreams for the next year, and it’s a little sad that I’m so reluctant to do that this time, because I have literally no idea what’s to come next year. I really hope we will be able to travel and see gigs again, it’s hard having the 2 best things in the world ripped away from me. However, honestly, as long as I am surrounded by as much love as I was this year, I know that things will be okay and I’ll be happy.

Debugging Postgresql on Your Local Machine

Let’s look at some of the ways that we can interact with Postgresql and figure out how to make it work with our Rails app locally.

First off, for ease of working, you can open up an additional tab on your shell while the shell simultaneously keeps hosting the RoR environment. Once you open up a new tab and navigate to the program directory so you can work, remember the best practice of shortening your bash shell path, the same way that we did in the previous post:

$ export PS1='\W$ '

Once you have that going, let’s see if we can connect to the postgres server:

confrnz_app$ psql

As a result we get:

psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

So in this situation, evidently we can’t connect to postgres. Something we forgot to do in the last post was to ensure that all of our gemfiles were updated. Typically before you host a rails app, you want to do the following:

$ bundle install

What that does is makes sure all dependencies in your Gemfile are available to your application. This is something called bundler. So going back to ensure that bundler is installed, you will want to run:

$ gem install bundler

Once you have done this, you can run “rails s” once again, but you will still come out with the same error.

Let’s update postgres with:

$ brew install postgres

After installation, we see:

postgresql 10.5 is already installed and up-to-date To reinstall 10.5, run `brew reinstall postgresql`

So now that we are running an updated version of postgres. To make sure we have all of our, “foundations” correct and software installed correctly, let’s go back and make sure everything is installed and up-to date on our local machine. This is a manual process, but is a good way to make sure all of the foundations of the, “versions” of various programs are working how we would expect them to do so. In the future, we can avoid much of this manual work by setting up something called, “docker” which is essentially a program which runs on local machines that allows an “image” to be run that mimics the runtime environment identical to what you would have in production. For example, we can load the Heroku-16 stack right into docker, install all of the programs that we would like to have ready to go (such as postgres) and test the, “production environment,” right on our local computers (in theory). That’s a lot of work and for now we’re just trying to get things up and running, so let’s keep going through the manual process for now.

Let’s make sure rails is installed.

$ gem install rails

Let’s install the postgres gem.

$ gem install pg

We may go back and choose to re-install other gems along the way if we see specific gems being called out within errors to ensure that we are completely up-to-date, but let’s leave this aside for now.

Rake in Ruby on Rails

What does it mean in Ruby to, “rake” something?

In Rails, Rake is used for common administration tasks, especially sophisticated ones that build off of each other. It’s basically your admin/devops utility kit for Ruby on Rails.

There are a variety of tools you can use within rake, that are linked to here. Something important to keep in mind is that since this is an “in-app” tool, we have to feed all of our environmental variables that is being required on the front-end if we haven’t hard-coded it into the RoR app, so in our case we have to add, SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 (assuming that the errors ask for it - in the future we may add this into the development environment to create more convenience).

So for example we can run:

$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rake about

To get information about the app itself. Go ahead, try it and see what comes up!

There are additional rake top line commands which can be used, summarized below:

rake db

The most common tasks of the db: Rake namespace are migrate and create, and it will pay off to try out all of the migration rake tasks (up, down, redo, reset). rake db:version is useful when troubleshooting, telling you the current version of the database.

rake doc

can be used to generated documentation within the doc/app file, as well as on guidelines, APIs and plugins rake notes will search through your code for comments beginning with FIXME, OPTIMIZE or TODO. The search is done in files with extension .builder, .rb, .erb, .haml and .slim for both default and custom annotations.

rake routes

will list all of your defined routes, which is useful for tracking down routing problems in your app, or giving you a good overview of the URLs in an app you’re trying to get familiar with.

rake test

A good description of unit testing in Rails is given in A Guide to Testing Rails Applications

rake tmp

The Rails.root/tmp directory is, like the *nix /tmp directory, the holding place for temporary files like sessions (if you’re using a file store for files), process id files, and cached actions.

rake stats

is great for looking at statistics on your code, displaying things like KLOCs (thousands of lines of code) and your code to test ratio.

rake secret

will give you a pseudo-random key to use for your session secret.

rake time:zones:all

lists all the timezones Rails knows about.

So how do we use the rake db: database tool?

More information about “rake db” commands can be found in the database migrations guide.

db:migrate

runs (single) migrations that have not run yet.

db:create

creates the database

db:drop

deletes the database

db:schema:load

creates tables and columns within the existing database

db:setup

runs db:create, db:schema:load, db:seed

So at this point, let’s start out and assume we don’t have a database running, or that we should take a database and kill it, and restart it to see if that works. We can do this with the following:

$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rake db:drop

$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rake db:create

We see that no matter what we do, whether we reset the database, drop and create it, we keep getting the same original error:

PG::ConnectionBad: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

How about we go and check whether postgres is even running in the first place?

$ ps auxwww | grep postgres

Basically what this is doing is on MacOS, “ps aux” shows all of the processes running on your machine, with the command “ps” being modified by “aux” to show which types of processes. The | (pipe) command means send information from one program to another for processing, so basically send from “ps” to “grep” and “grep” means “search for a string of characters,” so it is essentially a filter for, in this case, “postgres” The “wwww” at the end of aux controls the sizing as displayed within the terminal.

From this, we get a bunch of information about different postgres processes running. We don’t know which one is which at this point.

Side Note - Difference Between psql and postgres

Side note, taking a minute to understand the difference between “postgres” and “psql” commands within the context of the terminal.

postgres is the server itself, and runs separately from all of the client connections. It is almost never run by hand. Even if you want to start and stop it, this is normally done through pg_ctl or an init script if you installed a postgres package from your distribution.

psql is the command-line client, that connects to the server and allows you to execute individual queries by hand.

If we run the same command above and look at psql, which is our command-line client that connects us to the server, we see a different output:

So at this point, we should check whether we can even use the command-line client, “psql” to log into the server. This would be a good test - if we can’t log in, then probably RoR can’t log in with its gem either.

$ psql

We see that using this command, we get the same error. So there appears to be some kind of problem with whether the server is listening at all.

By default, postgres listens on port 5432. We can filter for all connections lisetning on this port by using the following command:

netstat -an | grep 5432

netstat -an ("network statistics") is a command-line tool that displays network connections (both incoming and outgoing), routing tables, and a number of network interface (network interface controller or software-defined network interface) and network protocol statistics. The -an just shows everything on the computer in question, and grep 5432 filters out for that port.

If that command produces no output, then postgres is not listening on the normal port, or is not listening on any port.

Is The Server Running?

The following command will output directly whether the server is running or not.

$ pg_ctl -D /usr/local/var/postgres status

Starting The Server

$ postgres -D /usr/local/var/postgres

Other Notes

WARNING ABOUT postmaster.pid File

PostgreSQL puts a file named postmaster.pid in the data directory to store the process id of the PostgreSQL server process. If PostgreSQL crashes, this file can contain an old pid that confuses PostgreSQL.

The Postgres help file states:

If you delete the postmaster.pid file while PostgreSQL is running, bad things will happen.

If you’re having problems, check there is no postmaster.pid in your postgres directory, probably /usr/local/var/postgres/

Postgres App

The postgres app itself can be found here. You have to physically run postgres in order to be able to have a port to listen to. Postgres has to be running and “open” order for the app to function in the first place.

Postgres.app includes psql, a versatile command line client for PostgreSQL. But it’s not the only option; there are plenty of great graphical clients available for PostgreSQL. Two popular tools are Postico and PGAdmin4.

Once you download the PostgreSQL app, it should look like the following upon initialization (prior to this, you have to hit “start” in order to get the program running):

Now that we are running postgres, we should be able to connect to it via various programs. Within shell, we now do the command:

$ psql

And for output we get:

psql (10.5)

Now we’re getting somewhere. If we use the database management tool, “Postico” we see the following upon connecting to “localhost”

Now that we are fairly confident that postgres is actually running, let’s go back and see if we can create a database using the RoR rake tool.

$ confrnz_app$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rake db:create Created database 'project_development' Created database 'project_test'

OK, that sounds good. Now we seem to have a ‘project_development’ database. What happens if we attempt to serve the site?

ActiveRecord::PendingMigrationError - Migrations are pending. To resolve this issue, run:

bin/rails db:migrate RAILS_ENV=development

Ah yes, that’s right - we need to migrate the database after creating it. What does it mean to migrate a database? Basically it just means to create the table within the structure that we are looking to create.

$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rake db:migrate

After this command is run, you will see a bunch of commands on the terminal being run in which the tables are being created. After this, run:

$ SPARKPOST_API_KEY=123 rails s

Success! Let’s review. After we have ensured that the following is complete, everything works.

1. Database is running by downloading, installing and running Postgres.

2. We re-installed things as needed to prevent versioning errors for all of the programs we have installed on our machine.

3. We created a data base, then migrated it.

4. We served the program in development mode, injecting environmental variables to make sure that it runs.
