Unpopular Opinion:

I loved the Downton Abbey film, especially Thomas's story and I love Richard but I couldn't help but to prefer Chris Webster. I know a lot of people really love Richard and so do I, but I just loved the scenes with those two. The dance scene especially was my favourite.

Edge of Heaven

Pairing: Andy Barber x OC (Sienna)

Plot summary: When Andy is forced to get a divorce from Laurie, he is separated from Jacob. But when Sienna, a psychology professor comes to help Andy with the investigation, will he resist the temptation to sleep with her?

Author’s note: If you haven’t seen the first 3 episodes of D.J, then I must warn you that there will be spoilers in this series. The ending of who killed Ben, Jacob’s classmate is all made up, based upon my opinion. Also, Andy was never fired from the case cause I hate Neil with all my guts...

I recommend that you watch this. NOW!!! (unless you do not have Apple TV…)

Chapter One:

Andy was devastated about finding the divorce papers on his work desk. He couldn’t believe Laurie had wanted a divorce all this time and she was taking Jacob with her.

He loved Jacob with all his heart and he wanted to make the judge and the jury of Newton County Court see that his son was innocent.

And now he won’t be able to see him anymore. Only in the courtroom and that’s it.

It was 2 days after the divorce was finalised and he was looking through his phone at all the different pictures. Himself, Jacob and Laurie. All together. He started to sniffle at the amazing and emotional memories but he tried not to cry.

Just then, Lynn came in with a mysterious woman.

“Mr Barber, this is Professor Webster. She is a psychology expert at the University of Massachusetts. She will be working on the case with you. For help, advice and interrogating witnesses and suspects.”

He put away his phone and quickly wiped his tears off of his cheeks away before standing up, brushing himself down and retrieving the handshake given by Ms Webster.

Her name was Sienna. She looked Cuban or Brazilian, in terms of her skin colour (not being racist or anything), long hazelnut brown hair, that she tied up in a ponytail, bright green eyes with a hint of brown in the centre of them. She was wearing a typical beige jumpsuit and black high heels. The ones that made her taller than Andy. She also wore glasses, the pair that librarians would wear. Not elderly glasses. Thick, black glasses.

“Nice to meet you. You can call me Sienna.”

“Then you can call me Andy.”

Lynn smiled at them both. “I’ll leave so you can make yourself acquainted.” She left Andy’s office with a huge smile on her face.

“They’ll get along just fine.” She thought out loud once she shut the door.

Meanwhile, Sienna sat opposite Andy, who was sitting in his office chair behind the desk. She crossed her legs and put her hands in her lap as she waited for him to stop typing on his computer.

He did so and then looked at Sienna, hands interlocked and both elbows on the handmade glass desk. His stare was mesmerising to Sienna. Quite firm but inviting. She was going to say something until Andy spoke out.

“What kind of accent is that? Is that Spanish or..?” He asked, his blue eyes firmly interlocking with Sienna’s green ones.

“It is Spanish. I come from Argentina.”

“Do they speak Spanish there?”

Sienna nodded and noticed Andy’s behaviour towards her. He looked very sad.

“Can you tell me what has happened? You look very sad… Unless this is too early into our friendship and maybe talk to me about it… later on?”

Andy sighed and put his head in his hands. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to talk to her about it or not. He decided not to. It was too early in their friendship to talk about his family.

Sienna nodded. She knew about his son being trialed for murder in the first degree. As he was 15 years old but the case was a murder allegation, they had to treat it as an adult case. 

This was quite difficult for Andy as he will try his very best to make sure his son didn’t kill his classmate and someone framed him, despite the fingerprint found on the victim’s sweatshirt.

“Anyway…” Sienna sighed and got out her paperwork from her black leather briefcase. She placed it on the desk and then picked out a black pen and a notebook. “There is absolutely no way that just a fingerprint on the victim’s clothing can have sufficient evidence in court.”

“Wait… How do you know all this?” Andy asked, flabbergasted about how much Sienna knew about the law and the Justice System.

“I studied law as an A-Level. Along with psychology and history.”

“Where did you study?”

“University of Massachusetts. Where I work currently.”

“Seriously? I studied there.”

Sienna froze for a moment and then put down her briefcase slowly. She couldn’t believe that this handsome man was in the same university as her. Wait. Did she say handsome?

“I also studied law. Also history and music.”

“Wait. What year did you graduate?”

“In 1992.”

“Oh. 2004.”

“Oh.”

It was a shame to think that Andy wasn’t in the same class as her. That would have been a coincidence.

“Do you mind if I open a window?” She said, her Spanish accent coming through heavily.

“Go ahead. Be my guest.”

Sienna stood up and went over to the window, opening a little bit. She took her hair out of her ponytail and put her scrunchie on her wrist. She let her hair blow in the wind. She also took off her glasses, putting them in the curve of her blouse.

“Wow. It is hot in here.”

Andy was gobsmacked. He swore she was flirting with him. With the flick of her hair and the biting on the temple tips of her glasses.

“Fahk...” He said quietly to himself, in his native Boston accent.

“What did you say?” She asked him, sitting down again.

“Nothing! Just… looking at the situation with the court case at the moment.” Andy quickly looked at the files.

“Well, as I was saying… There is no way that there is enough evidence to go against Jacob. The odds are totally in your favour. But, word of advice?”

“What?”

“You might need some witnesses and/or more evidence to back your defence up.”

Andy nodded. 

After a while, the meeting was over...

She put her notes away in her briefcase and stood up, smoothing down her jumpsuit.

Anthony Valentine: Actor who made his name playing a hitman in Callan and a Luftwaffe officer in Colditz

Valentine exuded charm and sophistication but made his name in psychopathic and ruthless roles in the 1970s

Anthony Valentine exuded charm and sophistication but made his name on television as psychopathic Toby Meres in Callan and ruthless Nazi Major Mohn in Colditz. Both roles, which brought him fame in the 1970s, typecast him as a screen "nasty" for years. "There must be something in me that other people see," the former child star once told me. "They must have a sixth sense that says, 'He looks a bit dodgy,' or, 'I don't like him.' I find that strange because, inside, I feel just as warm and friendly as the next guy."

Alongside Edward Woodward's title character in Callan (1967-72), a brutal drama set in the world of intelligence and intended as an antidote to the James Bond films, Valentine chillingly portrayed fellow agent Meres as a cold-blooded licensed killer, an upper-class thug who enjoys his deadly work.

He brought the same sadistic qualities to menacing Luftwaffe security officer Horst Mohn in the final series of Colditz (1974), based on Major Pat Reid's memoirs of his time in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Valentine also proved adept at depicting another side of Mohn's personality with his pathetic attempts to get the PoWs to testify that he treated them well as the Third Reich's imminent defeat becomes clear.

He played a more debonair character, albeit on the wrong side of the law, as the gentleman jewel thief in Raffles (1975-77), adapted from EW Hornung's short stories. AJ (Arthur) Raffles was a cricketer and amateur cracksman and, unlike Valentine's previous notorious characters, disapproved of violence.

He was born Tony Valentine in Blackburn, Lancashire, where his parents, Mary (née Walsh) and William, worked in a cotton mill. When he was six, the family moved to south London and Valentine's mother, a fan of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly film musicals, enrolled him in dancing lessons.

At the age of nine he was spotted tap-dancing in a stage version of Robin Hood at Ealing Town Hall and chosen to act in the film thriller No Way Back (1949). Then, while training at the Valerie Glynne Stage School and attending Acton County Grammar School, he appeared in the film The Girl on the Pier (1953) and had various roles on television, including Trout in Emil and the Detectives (1952).

On leaving school, children's TV kept Valentine busy, casting him as Humphrey Beverley in The Children of the New Forest (1955), JO Stagg in Rex Milligan (1956) and Lord Mauleverer (1955), then Harry Wharton (1956-57), in Billy Bunter of Greyfriars School. He also sang in the children's magazine show Whirligig – accompanied by Steve Race on the piano – and for two seasons in operas at Sadler's Wells Theatre.

Making the successful transition to adult acting, Valentine performed in repertory theatres around the country. He also enjoyed invaluable experience at the Royal Court Theatre in 1958 with roles in John Osborne's Epitaph for George Dillon and Arnold Wesker's Chicken Soup with Barley. Back on television, he played Gerald Quincey in the Francis Durbridge serial The Scarf (1959) and, switching to the classics, took a dozen parts in An Age of Kings (1960), the BBC's Shakespeare anthology series.

Fame in Callan led Valentine to be cast in two other thriller series, playing Vickers in Scobie in September (1969) and Philip West in Codename (1970). He also acted barrister James Eliot (1974) in the final series of Justice, a popular legal drama starring Margaret Lockwood.

This celebrity made him a popular panellist in television game shows such as Call My Bluff (between 1974 and 1981), but he began to find good, strong starring roles hard. So he simply made guest appearances – as streetwise gambler Maurice Michaelson in Minder (three episodes, 1979-83), charming black marketeer Squadron-Leader Dickie Marlowe in Airline (1982) and evil sorcerer Baron Simon de Belleme in Robin of Sherwood (1984 and 1985).

He then bounced back with several leading roles. After acting sinister Tony Slater, one of the partners in crime, in The Fear (1988), he was cast in Body & Soul (1993) as Stan Beattie, the stubborn manager of an ailing north of England mill coming into conflict with the young nun (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) who takes charge of it after the death of her brother. Then came the part of smuggler George Webster (1994-96) in the Customs & Excise drama The Knock.

Guest roles continued, including a 36-episode run in Coronation Street as George Wilson (2009-10), the grandfather of Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) and father of Lucy Richards (Katy Carmichael), who had died after splitting up with her bigamist husband, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne). On discovering his newly found grandson, retired builder George spoiled him and offered to pay for a private education, to the annoyance of Simon's other grandfather, Ken Barlow (William Roache).

Valentine's occasional film appearances included Joey Maddocks, a bookmaker contending with James Fox's east London gangster, in Performance (1970), SS Major Volkmann, the sadistic town commandant, in Escape to Athena (1979) and the British ambassador in Jefferson in Paris (1995). On the West End stage, Valentine acted in The Shifting Heart (Duke of York's Theatre, 1959), Two Stars for Comfort (Garrick Theatre, 1962), Half a Sixpence (Cambridge Theatre, 1962), No Sex, Please – We're British (Strand Theatre, 1971-72), as the assistant bank manager, Peter Hunter, Sleuth (St Martin's Theatre, 1972) , Hans Andersen (London Palladium, 1977) and Art (Wyndham's Theatre, 1999-2000).

Valentine, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2012, was married to the actress Susan Skipper (née Cook), who met him when she guest-starred in Raffles. They also appeared on screen together in the 1979 television production of the Ivor Novello musical The Dancing Years.

All good things come to an end

My friends, it has been an honor sharing this journey with you all. I’ll go ahead and get into our last full week, but get ready for those sentimental words of wisdom at the end. 

I believe my last blog post left off with departure to Bloemfontein for the South Africa Institute of Physics (SAIP) conference. As advisor Mike described it, this is where everyone gives themselves a little pat on the back for their work and you hear lots of boring speeches, but it truly was more than that—Mike likes to exaggerate! The week was filled with good food, interesting talks, supporting our student resident friends on their presentations, a gala dinner with some fresh African tunes, and much more. Oh and watching the World Cup, of course.

Monday was mostly travel, so Tuesday is where I’ll start with the action: after some morning inspiration with Mike’s presentation, our crew readied ourselves for the annual poster review session. Not gonna lie, many of us secretly hoped our posters looked boring enough that no one would stop to ask us questions. But as the picture below suggests, I ended up enjoying myself:

I sort of got into a rhythm of explaining the poster background info and results as people approached, and then I was able to answer questions pertaining to my research quite well! Knowing that I can have a conversation with experts in the field (ionospheric science) and having them be impressed with the work and answers I gave was a great feeling. Never really been on that side of a poster session before, but it's super satisfying to explain what you've accomplished.

Wednesday was the long awaited physics bowl, and let’s just say that we are undergraduates in engineering, not masters/PhD students in the hard sciences like our competitors... HOWEVER, we rocked the best-dressed category, even though our attire was as far away from “Game of Thrones” as possible.

Thursday was a fun one as well. While Kit and Kyle taxi-ranked to the nearby country of Lesotho, I journeyed with Mike Kosch, Ed, and Lerato (a postdoc researcher) to the Big Hole in Kimberley, Northern Cape. What is the Big Hole, you may ask? One of the 2 largest hand-excavated holes in the world.

Diamond mining was a huge colonial activity in South Africa once they were discovered, exacerbated by Cecil Rhodes’ quest for money, land, and influence.

Over 5000 lbs of diamonds came out of this mine. Kimberlite (the igneous rock excavated diamond typically comes from) is named after this mining town. 

Very interesting history of the mine, paired with a replica of Kimberley’s historic mining town (some buildings authentic) and even an underground mining shaft exhibit.

We then stopped for one last local street-food health monstrosity of the trip: kota, an open-faced sandwich loaf filled with various meats and atchar (pickled mango & chili). 

I swear, I actually love vegetables.

Friday was the highly-anticipated Gala dinner. Got all snazzy one more time and set off for the event:

Food was nice, but the most memorable times of the night were seeing our South African student-res friends go bonkers for Soweto club music. Once again, I am ashamed of my dancing skills...

After the return from Bloemfontein, some of us managed to wake up for church on Sunday to join one of our mentors, Pierre (standing next to me on far right above). Him and I got to know each other pretty well at SAIP, and we even went out for a run with Zama one morning. Anyway, church! I helped make some BREWED coffee with Pierre and then we got to enjoy this lively, upbeat service with a good amount of live music.

Later that night, we were all invited to Pierre’s really nice, thatched roof home for a lovely soup supper. 

So precious.

Afterwards, we had a fun little board game session. Though about halfway through the night, we discovered something lurking in the bathroom...

Monday was my last day to wrap things up in the office and say goodbye to Zama before she left for the UK. The state of the project looks good, and I will continue to help her analyze data from European ionosondes for a future paper. Gives me something to do the rest of the summer—I’m looking forward to it!

That night we finally hosted our huge braai (South African barbecue) with all the other student residents, Mike, and Pierre. I had lots of fun tending the fire, prepping the meats, and just chatting with everyone. Oh and watching the World Cup, of course.

Tuesday was primarily stuffing clothes into my bag, and scrambling to figure out a shark diving alternative once our original session was “cancelled” due to weather. Though it all worked out, and Kyle, Ed, and I made the trek on our final morning: we weren’t disappointed.

In total, we saw 5 great white sharks (2 absolute monsters over 4 meters and super girthy). The best view of the sharks came from above, but dipping down in the cage was exhilarating. You can’t really see anything while down in the cage with your head above water. So when the operators start yelling “down” and you dunk yourself, it’s always a total surprise how big the shark is and how it’s approaching (charging straight towards the cage or just meandering across, showing off it’s beastly bod). Tribute to Kyle for embracing the sea-sickness too, what a stud.

Finally that night, we had to say goodbye to our South African colleagues before departure to the Cape Town airport:

At the airport, Kyle read us back a touching poem (he’s single, ladies) about our trip as well as some classic, no-context quotes from the trip. Finally, we had our hugs and split ways in Amsterdam.

Now folks, we’ve reached our closing messages of the blog. Friends, thank you very much for supporting me on this trip by reading my blog and wishing me travel safety—it came in handy a couple times! 

Thank you so much, Mark, CLaSP, and IPE, for providing this opportunity for me to explore the world and discover what research is all about. I really can’t express my gratitude enough for giving students this chance to test our boundaries, see another culture, and do good academic work along the way. Mark, it was a pleasure getting to know you on the Sutherland trip, and I’m in awe of how much you know about the world.

Zama and Mike, holy smokes you are fun people. Our group was so impressed with you guys going out of your way to give us cool experiences while in the country. Similar to Mark, I was blown away with how knowledgeable you were and I really enjoyed all our chats! Really looking forward to keeping in touch with both of you.

Probably starting to bore you all a bit, but Eva, Gabby, Abby, Kit, Ed, and Kyle, thanks for being such fun friends throughout the trip. We were a very adventurous group, and it was a blessing that we were able to do so much together. I apologize for pushing for certain activities fairly hard and being an ultra-organizer, but I’ve learned a lot about myself regarding just going-with-the-flow! Looking forward to continuing our relationships next year and keeping our GroupMe/Snapchats active this summer.

Knives Out

Among all the languages extant today, English enjoys that lofty status of being the lingua franca. Basically, “Since everyone’s speaking it, might as well then” stature and because of this, it has a certain flexibility in its lexicon. For example, it has acquired certain loan words from other languages. One such loan word is the French “ensemble”. Good ol’ Mr. Webster defines ensemble as “a group producing a single effect”. How appropriate for this wonderfully crafted movie! A group of remarkable actors coming together, as if falling into a movie singularity, but instead of collapsing under the mass of a forgettable script and a meager storyline not giving justice to the talent therein, it sucks you instead into a black hole of pure satisfaction knowing you just watched a thoroughly engaging film.     

Movie buffs will no doubt classify this kind of film as a whodunit. Yes, that is still American English so please forgive the colloquialism grammar gurus! These kinds of films are characterized by treating the audience with an intricate plot revolving around a murder mystery. The protagonist is usually a detective or genius sleuth figure who tries to solve the murder by figuring out who the killer is through brilliant deduction skills. For most of the movie, the audience goes along with the sleuth’s soliloquy and his thought process as he works his way through the gallery of “suspects” interviewing, considering and examining them to uncover who the culprit is. Hence, “Who done (did) it?”

The last notable example of a whodunit with an impressive ensemble of stars was Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 version of the classic “Murder on the Orient Express”. Also, growing up in the ’80s, I still have scant memories of when I managed to catch the great Peter Ustinov in the excellent “Death on the Nile” which Branagh is also apparently going to be helming next. Both films were adapted from the books by famed and prolific(!) English mystery writer Agatha Christie. 

For this film, a particular narrative style is cleverly used: this is when the movie actually begins in the middle of the story and flashbacks of past scenes are told from the point of view of each character. These recollections of past incidents, however, are often not so accurate, they’re distorted even! Mr. Detective then has to wade through such murky details to arrive at the truth of it all. The effect can be a bit comical at times! This narrative device is called the Rashomon Effect from the seminal 1950 movie of the same name (“Rashomon”) by the acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa from the Land of the Rising Sun. Kurosawa’s pioneering narrative concept has even become a framework for several fields in academia (but knowing that you didn’t come here for a Sociology homework, let’s move on to more exciting stuff, shall we?).            

We need to talk about the top tier cast! Some recognizable stalwarts include the esteemed Christopher Plummer as the celebrated writer cum moneyed patriarch and who you instinctively know is going to die for the wheels to turn. The dysfunctional and foible-filled clan is comprised of Jamie Lee Curtis as the eldest daughter with an executive, Type “A” personality and woefully married to Don Johnson’s unimpressive husband role. Chris Evans playing the ne'er-do-well son isn’t really noteworthy for me because he seems to be basically playing himself, or is he? The rest of the clan and their respective brood includes the ubiquitous Aussie Toni Collette who seems convincing as some sort of “celebrity influencer” and also trying to be a mother to a daughter with an SJW bent. 

At this point, I’m going to mention my standouts: Michael Shannon taking the role of second eldest with a fairly large chip on his shoulder and quirky son in the background. I am compelled to mention that he is a favorite actor of mine because if you’ve seen 2011’s “Take Shelter” and his role as General Zod in “Man of Steel”, you’ll know the raw talent this guy has. Unfortunately, he is somewhat under-utilized in this movie. This is not totally unexpected since he is part of an ensemble and it’s always going to be a challenge to give ample time for each character to flesh out their roles. A hallway scene somewhere there will provide enough atmosphere to make his presence somewhat felt.   

Next is Mr. “007” himself, Daniel Craig comes half-convincingly equipped with a gentlemanly Southern drawl (Yes, I’m not kidding!). Maybe it’s still that British secret agent aura around him that prevents me from embracing his decent portrayal of a private investigator working on the high-profile case. There are times when he operates on quiet intensity, then sometimes with a cheeky grin which looks like he’s trying to suppress.  

Last but certainly not least is the Spanish succulence named Ana de Armas. She’s been working steadily in Hollywood for some time and her full thespic talents are revealed in spite of her “body” of work (that was indeed a double entendre, as 2015’s “Knock Knock” and 2017’s “Bladerunner 2049” gloriously reveals). As the caregiver to the recently deceased patriarch, she balances the vulnerable-yet-firm, sensitive-but-gutsy character very well! I’m sure with more fine projects like this, her star will continue to rise in filmdom and I look forward to it. 

I must admit I don’t know much about director Rian Johnson except for 2012’s “Looper” which I honestly found nothing special. Apparently, he also directed an umpteenth “Star Wars” product which I also did NOT regret watching. This project though is something noteworthy and the ability to thoughtfully meld a fantastic script with a talented “A list” ensemble in a non-linear narrative is commendable. The pacing of the story arc was just right too.     

So the ensemble is more than just the sum of its parts. So much more. This movie works well and does not leave the audience lost and eliciting intense divisiveness with its finale. I’m glad too that these kinds of movies are still being made and are a welcome alternative to the countless remakes/reimaginings, franchises or uninspired efforts of Hollywood these days.
