What I Watched This Week – 11/13-11/19
Blue Seed - By all rights, I should have turned this off in the middle of the first episode when the plant vine tentacle monster ripped off the sixteen-year-old main character's skirt and had her spend the rest of the episode in her underwear. For whatever reason, however, I kept watching, perhaps to see how they would contrive to show the viewer her underwear in every single episode. There was a whole story about trying to save Japan, and by extension the entire world, from getting dominated by space plant yokai that was interesting enough, but I have to say that my biggest takeaway was that Japanese media is bizarrely comfortable with nonconsensual, humiliating fanservice while shying away from even the mildest displays of normal, healthy affection between romantically involved characters. 6/10
Fastest Finger First - After watching the above exercise in 90s anime nonsense, I wanted something of a palate cleanser, and this single-cour sports anime about high school trivia teams seemed about right. Whether or not someone would enjoy this show would depend upon their tolerance level for characters saying face-meltingly nerdy things with all the aggressive enthusiasm of a Haikyuu character yelling about volleyball. I generally eat that sort of thing up, I own Kabukibu on Blu-ray after all, but at times it tested even my limits. The animation is extremely bare bones and the writing was a little clunky with more info dumping than it should have had, but it was a pleasant enough way to spend an evening. 6/10
Gintama Ep.26-50 - I don't know who I was lying to last week when I said I wasn't going to marathon this week after week because it was so juvenile, because I am someone who tore through 90% of Fairy Tail in a single month to kick off my current anime monomania. I don't have standards, I'm just here for the vibes. All of this is to say, I like this show despite the occasional dips into mean-spirited humor, and I'm probably going to watch too much of it too fast. So far, Sougo is my favorite character. His deadpan sadist shenanigans crack me up.

finished uchi no shishou wa shippo ga nai and it was solidly okay (cute! fun!)
Tumblr media
i always suspected i wouldn’t be able to give this series a fair shake, because it’s a cute little rakugo anime where the main character is a tanuki... so for me it’s going up against descending stories, which is of course the rakugo anime, and uchouten kazoku
descending stories and uchouten kazoku are two of my all-time favorites, so i never expected uchi no shishou to surpass them (and to its credit, it’s not trying to! it’s a very different show in genre and tone)
uchi ga shishou certainly didn’t get anywhere close to the level of those two series, but it was still cute and enjoyable!
bunko is very cool and mameda is adorable, i’m a total sucker for a dynamic like theirs, but at the same time i also didn’t get super attached to any of the main cast... bunchou and utaroku lore got me making the eyes emoji tho
predictably i picked this up mostly for the cast, because not only is it a rakugo anime it’s a rakugo anime with ishida akira performing rakugo which i will eat up literally any day (his performance as bon in descending stories is one of my favorites of his, of all time, which is saying a lot because he’s fucking kaworu)
Tumblr media
i got chills when he started to perform, but his character doesn’t actually feature that heavily in this series and it just made me miss bon so so so much
in short, i’d say uchi no shishou is to rakugo what kabukibu! is to kabuki
it’s cute and it’s a serviceable enough introduction to the art of rakugo, but it’s a little bit all over the place and doesn’t make me lie in a puddle of my own tears for three months like a certain other rakugo show

Mini-Review: Kabukibu!
Kurogo Kurusu is a high school student with an almost annoying love of kabuki, the traditional Japanese dance-drama. The only problem for him is that his school doesn’t have a club for it. He decides to take matters into his own hands and create a kabuki club.
The title is fun to say. Try it. “KABUKIBU.” It means “kabuki club,” but it sounds to my ears like it’s meant to continue going. Kabukibukibukibuki
Tumblr media
The premise is basic: excitable 10th grader loves kabuki, sets out to create a club with his more stoic-seeming but loyal best friend. They meet and convince a number of students to join, including ones with backstories like “classically-trained in Japanese dancing,” and proceed to put on some small performances.
Tumblr media
It’s 12 episodes, and there’s really not a ton of drama. The stakes here are pretty low: teen wants a club, needs people, gets people. People who mostly don’t know much about kabuki.
Tumblr media
Incidentally, I didn’t know much about kabuki, either. The show does a pretty good job explaining it. There’s no English-language equivalent I can think of, but imagine kinda Shakespeare in the original, most hard-to-understand language, spoken by people with adolescent voice cracking, with costumes inspired by mimes. (This is not a criticism, it’s just very different than anything I’ve ever seen.)
Tumblr media
The story is driven by small things: will they find enough members? Will they have enough time to learn their parts before their first performance? Will that one classmate stop being such an elitist asshole long enough for something nice to happen?
Tumblr media
And because the scope is kept small, it works well. No worries about going to a large competition, this is just a really enthusiastic teenager who wants to have a school-sanctioned reason to learn about and perform kabuki with other people for the next 3 years. That’s it.
Tumblr media
It was just plain enjoyable.

Verdict
English dub? No
Visuals: Nice, often bright. Character designs are distinct, and the highlights are always when they’re in costume. Japanese writing in the background is subtitled extremely well imho, as seen in one of the screencaps above, making it easy for me to read. It’s more realistic, though, so no designs are super memorable (despite designs being famously done by CLAMP).
Worth watching? Yes! It’s a great, low-stakes show that explains things pretty well. No stress, not weird stuff going on to cause plotholes.
Where to watch (USA, as of March 2020): Amazon Prime, HIDIVE, Blu-Ray from Sentai Filmworks
Still screencaps came from Lost in Anime, which has excellent reviews

The Josei’s Top 10 Anime of 2017: Part 1 (Honorable Mentions & #6-10)
Tumblr media
Time to write some love letters to the shiny gems sitting atop this garbage year! Given that 2017 lasted about thirty normal years (I’m pretty sure I’m eligible for senior citizen discounts now), perhaps it’s no wonder that we were able to cram so many great anime into it. As with 2016, I’ve decided to throw even the veneer of objectivity out the window and just talk to you about some shows I…
