TW: Sexism . 👁Ghoorti Nazar👁 14/14 . Last year I was invited by the Indian based @kadakcollective to participate in the Bystander Anthology. A first of its kind anthology bringing together writers, illustrators, artists and activists from South Asia under the theme of bystander, a term that holds many layered meanings in our South Asian societies and culture. . Sabika Abbas aka @boltiaurat a vibrant and incredible Indian poet and activist approached me about collaborating for the Anthology. As soon as I saw a video of her reciting her powerful and haunting poem, ‘Meri Saree’ on a street in Mumbai I knew I had to create something with this beautiful soul. . As we both wondered about what being a bystander meant to us, we both came to the conclusion that we as women have almost always been bystanders in our own cities, Karachi and Delhi. I personally have spent most of my life in Karachi and yet I feel like an anomaly here, a bystander. I have a void of a relationship with my city. Most of us women living in Pakistan feel that way. I do not feel safe here, I have been harassed, robbed, threatened and stared at. And while I blame my city, who is the real threat and culprit? Not this piece of land and sea that surrounds me but the men that live on it. It’s these men who don’t let us go out and when we do, their eyes and hands burn our skin and flesh. . I started working on this piece last year and yet this year and today it feels more relevant. My heart and all the Pakistani women’s hearts are bleeding from all the recent and past tragedies. Now there’s just a seething anger left. How many more of us will be hurt, killed and raped? Till when will we be made to feel like bystanders on our own land? Our collaboration seeks to recognize this important experience and give each other courage to keep going out, keep riding that bike, keep taking that bus, wear what you want, dream what you like and go get it. The more of us that are out there, the more they will realize we are not bystanders, we are the women of our cities.
