This might be kinda niche but does anyone remember how Kaiba was straight up being blamed for what happened to Gozoboro??? Like he literally had someone run up to him and start yelling saying he, a child, killed Gozoboro… like that’s so insane to me

sorry for having Siegfried Thoughts™ again but i can't help but wonder what the timeline of his plan was for something this huge and insane! how long had it been since Siegfried discovered Leon's a duelist? was he workshopping an early version of his plan while hatewatching Battle City? and how long did the hacking of KaibaCorp's security systems actually take? we see Siegfried's infiltration of KaibaCorp as effortless: the man's just finished bathing when he starts the process! but i think this was all pre-planned - we see by the end of the tournament that Siegfried is exactly as obsessed with Seto as his father was with Gozaburo. there was no way Siegfried left anything to chance, and he was not as cool as he came off. i'm quietly amused by the idea of the extremely high-strung Siegfried planning an afternoon of luxury and relaxation just as he begins to fuck with the Kaibaland security systems, all in an effort to stop himself from going to pieces with the nerves 😭💔
this seems much more in-line with the Siegfried which slowly gets revealed as the arc goes on...the one who smashes the photoframe of him and Seto when they were younger out of sheer frustration; the one who has several maniacal laughing fits when he's defeated by Seto in a duel; the one who had to capitalise on his little brother's dueling prowess because he didn't think he could do it alone. to me, Siegfried isn't the cool, collected customer that Kaiba is, and that destroys him. everything about Siegfried screams insecurity, from the designer clothes to the one-hit-kill deck strategy. Siegfried wants to be Kaiba, and the way he reacts to any form of stress (except for Yami and Yuugi), so bad 🙈 perhaps this isn't everyone's view of Siegfried, but my headcanon is absolutely this brilliant, hypervigilant, hair-has-turned-lighter-from-the-stress man who has spent his entire life trying to be better than a guy he simply cannot surpass...because Kaiba doesn't feel the same way. i think of Siegfried going through years of stress prior to the tournament, with those cavernous castle rooms covered in scraps of paper and laptops running countless programs, all while he's nearly tearing his hair out trying to plan for every. single. eventuality 💔

…Can you imagine what that drama would've looked like if Noah survived? I mean, sure, chances are Gozaburo woulda never bothered starting over if Noah made it, but you know, maybe there was still a while that they weren't sure he would, so Gozaburo lowkey panicked and adopted some spare heirs just in case. And they all knew for that long that they were being pitted against each other as competitors.
Like, imagine if Gozaburo still died and Noah still blamed Seto cuz Noah was supposed to be the favorite. When they were all using stocks to play family business chess with each other, as minors are definitely legally allowed to do (which, mother of pearl, I can't even begin to think about what politics or social media in Domino City musta looked like), Noah woulda definitely sided with Gozaburo from the start, so he woulda also taken it personally when Mokuba betrayed Noah too by handing his shares to Seto, even though Noah himself was absolutely trying to use Mokuba to Get That 51% whereas Seto was risking his relationship with Mokuba to secretly assure that he wouldn't become collateral if Seto failed.
Good god, Noah really woulda been season zero Seto, including toward Mokuba. Bad. Awful. Cursed.
But then also, I'm not about to forget what the Kaibro dynamic looked like back in the Toei days, but imagine next when Noah's betrayed not just by his adoptive baby brother but also by his father shortly thereafter when Noah's no longer of use to Gozaburo.
The Kaibros already got their daddy issues, sure, but that family drama would've been lethally radioactive if Noah were alive for all of it.

Kaiba turning a military jet into a dragon airplane IS on one level a repudiation of kaibacorp's military history - turning a weapon of mass death and destruction into a fantasy dragon for children, simply because he can and he likes it - but the fact that it's a fighter jet is STILL, on another level, an embrace of power, of might, of the ability to destroy and dominate. is it a rebuke of the military industrial complex via children's toy OR is it the further fetishization of power and domination? what is it kaiba?? is kaibacorp's raging success and unfathomable corporate power a victory of a child's dreams over violence or are you everything gozaburo ever dreamed of???

I was thinking

Maybe the reason why Seto is so opposed to the idea of destiny and fate is because he is terrified of anyone and anything infringing upon the autonomy he worked so hard to create for himself
Tumblr media
Because of Gozaburo’s abuse he saw the darker sides of paternalism, so the idea of an all powerful force like destiny and fate deciding his path for him “for his own good” reminds him too much of that powerlessness.

CW CHILD ABUSE and overall kind of a heavy drawing

Leaving the duelists kingdom. I can't imagine how painful it was for Kaiba bros to be manipulated and abused by a powerful man all over again. DK is a goofy arc but the trauma is real.

I'll forever be fascinated with the idea of what Seto would have become if he'd never gotten control of KaibaCorp. What Gozaburo would have turned him into. How much worse he would have gotten without an outlet for the pent up everything negative in his heart.
What Mokuba would have become, once Gozaburo decided to take an interest in his education. How the brothers' relationship might never recover because Mokuba blames his brother for all of this.
What paramilitary training they might have eventually gotten. What crimes Kaiba would probably go on to commit.
How Seto probably would have snapped one day and finally murdered his stepfather to take control.

Gozaburo: “I’m benevolent to you. You won’t feel pain or sorrow in this world.”
*Seto and Noa blatantly in pain and/or sorrow in this world*
